What happened to mommy?

Summary:

An alternative perspective in chapter 3 of "(do) I love you...?"

Work Text:

Broodling yawned as her eyes fluttered open, taking stock of her surroundings.

Her big brothers had names, but all they ever called her was Broodling. Mommy also only seemed to call her that, too, so Broodling didn't really care.
When she woke up, she usually waited for Mommy, who would help her out of bed and into her clothes before taking her to the dining room to eat.
But today, and a bunch of todays before that, Mommy stopped.
Broodling wasn't bothered by that either, because she still kept getting breakfast because her big brothers filled the void, and she would be taken to the dining room by a warden instead.
She didn't think about Mommy; she thinks about the things she can see, like Brothers, yummy food, cozy blankets, or eggies.

Always eggies.

Mommy laid so many eggies before she stopped being here. Broodling would always stare at the big, warm, wriggling eggies and begged her big brothers to have lots and lots of them too, but her brothers always just ruffled her messy little hair and said one day, she would have all the eggies she'd ever want.
She'll think about Mommy when she sees her again. For now, she has plenty of things to think about.

A strong Wardenfly named Alexei entered her room and helped her get dressed.
It just so happened that big brother was covered in red stuff from his work.
Broodling had to resist the urge to lick the red stuff off of him; it smelled so nice, but she was already going to have breakfast soon.

The breakfast was mean to her, it was tied down but managed to tear out of the ropes, screaming confusing stuff at her that scared her.
Big Brother, who was just about to leave the room, growled when he saw the resilient food and started punching it in the face until she heard a big crack and it stopped moving.
Breakfast tasted great, so great that she hissed for more, and big brother scrambled away to find some more.
And more came! A big, walking food entered the room and started making weird noises. Next to her was a sister??

It looked kinda like mommy, but Broodling had never seen a person like this before, with no wings and sharper fangs and brighter, pale skin.
Sister started asking some really weird questions that made Broodling think really hard, harder than she ever had. Why was she here? How did she get here? Was she happy?
Broodling just pouted and was ready to find an excuse to say no somehow; she couldn't take anymore of this thinking stuff, it was making her think about Mommy.
It had been the day after Mommy had stopped being here. On the day mommy stopped being here, her brothers kept her holed in her room for some time, one of them holding her to their strong chest and humming a song to her.

But Broodling was so confused about where Mommy had gone, she used her little body to sneak past them and into the room where all the eggies were kept.
Mommy was taking a nap on the floor, a wooden stake driven into her chest. Broodling giggled and jumped at Mommy. She must be very tired to take a nap like that!
But when she didn't really react, Broodlng shook her, but she still didn't say anything.

A guardfly took her by the hand and began pulling her away from her sleepy mommy, saying Broodling is supposed to be having a snack now, then going to bed. Broodling babbled in confusion, having not begun learning speech yet. She remained helplessly and entirely confused to this day.

Finally, the food got very close to Broodling's mouth, so she opened her maw and prepared to eat. When the food asked if she was happy, Broodling knew the answer! Of course she was! Food makes her happy!

The food and the sister both took off shortly after, and Broodling whimpered for losing the food, but Big Brother came in with more!

Broodling ate more and was left to play. After 5 hours of playtime, it was time for lunch, which went smoothly, then 3 hours of playtime, then bed.

One of her brothers escorted Broodling to her bed and tucked her in.

Broodling thought back to what the sister said, asking if she was really happy, and she definitely was, as long as she stayed away from all of those bad thoughts.
