The mind link was something I kinda established back in the first story, as a way to keep Uma in the fray since she was back on the Isle of the Lost (the penal island that Beast and Belle set up during their twenty year reign as monarchs of Auradon before giving power to their sixteen year old son, all the villains/sidekicks were sent there). However Ben, Beast and Belle's son, decided a month before his coronation to invite four kids from the Isle to Auradon because he felt that they were getting left behind.
In the movie/books, they did this thing where they matched the first letter of the kid's name with the first letter of their parents (ie. Mal=Maleficent, Ben=Belle/Beast, Audrey=Aurora, Carlos=Cruella, Uma=Ursula, etc) but I'll be more than happy to add a note listing that. Especially since in my story, Mal's only connected to Maleficent biologically. Her true mother is Persephone even though Maleficent birthed her.
