Comment on The Climb

  1. This is probably the most beautiful piece of fanfiction I have ever read. During the ending I actually started crying.

I never liked the character of Snape in the cannon books. Despite his motivations he was needlessly cruel, and downright abusive to his students. I never saw his love for Lily as justification for the way he treated those children, and I don't think it earned him redemption for the way he could never look past Harry's appearance and see him as his own person.

But the way you have woven the story here is masterful. I thought the presentation of Severus' character was incredible and entirely believable.

I was especially impressed with the choice to leave the timeline mainly cannon compliant, including the deaths, making the story not about how if Harry had been raised by Snape then everything would have turned out differently, but about how THEY were different.

    1. Yeah, exactly — things aren't different, but THEY'RE different, and it matters! It still matters.

Thank you very much. This is sort of the heart of what I wanted to do in the fic — I wanted to make him earn his redemption, and I think he could've been a great man if he'd only tried.
