What a delightful, and delightfully long, comment! Really helped improve my mood yesterday during a very long day of work lol.
-Aghh thank you!! I changed the sign haha. Fingers got ahead of my brain!
-Ahahahaha amazing, thank you. I'll never be able to watch the shirt-tuck the same way again.
-There's absolutely no way a Starfleet couple who's been married for three decades *hasn't* done it in the turbolift at least once, for the bragging rights if nothing else. Hell I bet it's on Enterprise Bingo: Married Edition card somewhere.
-Exactly! I'm so glad that came across; like years later of course Brad can't remember his own credentials, but the emergency code that's the same three numbers so you don't get atomized? Yup, that'll stick in the brain.
-That was EXACTLY the vibe I was going for with the floor (or technically the glass walkway they have over the grand canyon, but I digress).
-Indeed they are not lol.
-He's as spit-and-polish-shiny as his silver delta pin.
-She's totally fine! Doesn't need him at all!
-Yep. Noncoms still get the dangerous grunt work even in the twenty-fourth century, it seems...
-Thank you!! Part of the reason this story has taken so long to write is because I essentially had to write it backwards, specifically the heist bits to make sure all the little dominoes were set up correctly. I appreciate the recognition!
-Remember that thought. ;)
-With a little salt around the rim!
-Yeah. I was pretty proud of that paragraph, because I feel like it really gets to the heart of his character in the same way that we the audience realizing she's a war vet gets to the heart of Mariner's. Both of them have a very similar fatal flaw of pushing people away because they're afraid of getting abandoned or left behind. Boimler's greatest weakness is always, always his own insecurity and sense of unworthiness, and his maladaptive ways of trying to prove to himself that he's not. And William Boimler is kind of the final incarnation of that; without his friends to force him to grow, Boimler kind of remains stuck in a downward spiral of trying to prove to himself that he's worthy of self-love by doing the exact type of stuff that pushes other people away and makes it hard for them to have authentic and vulnerable relationships with him.
-Roll credits!
-Regarding songfics: no judgment here, I'm not usually a fan of them myself (with rare circumstances), because it's so often "character A sings to character B" which I...personally just hate? No offense to anyone who likes that, but it's not my thing. I think making the music diagetic in a setting where it actually makes sense to have someone singing *hopefully* undercut most readers' instinctive cringe, but we'll see. It's an experiment on my part for sure.
-Yeah, I went back and forth on that for a long time; I didn't really like that either, "cheat" is probably the right word for it, but I'd been debating it for so long that I hit the point of "fuck it, good enough is good enough." Definitely not my best artistic choice.
-And your comment got a big laugh out of me! You're right, they totally would go back for the shoe! It's gotta be worth something on the open market!
-Man I love dunking on Migleemo, he's so bad at his job lol. Though in the bird-man's (mild) defense, we see in TNG that even when a ship has a good counselor, these Starfleet types will 100% just ignore the therapist's good advice and wait until they're in serious shenanigans to have an epiphany anyway.
-Huh. I didn't actually look it up and I'm not 100% sure if it's something NASA trains in, but I assume it has to be? Like I've seen skydivers doing it and I'm sure they have to train to remember to do that mid-flight.
-Thanks. :) Sometimes an image just pops into your head and it has to be incarnated onto the page, and the falling scene was one of them.
Thank you again for your wonderful comment (and your kind but constructive criticism)! I live for long comments like these so this really made my day, especially on a long Monday. Hope you have a great rest of your week!!
