Chapter Text
To put it simply, Leo was bored.
Being assigned bed rest for an injured leg can do that to a turtle, and the fact that he was alone didn't make it any better.
With the med bay clock reading 6:16 AM, it was likely that his nocturnal brothers were already drifting off to sleep, with the resident insomniac being left out of the loop.
As a result, Leo began to push himself up with his forearms in search of something to do, as the alternative was to wallow in bed until his brothers woke up.
Cause, to put it dramatically, Leo was drowning in the crashing waves of utter restlessness. This spurred him to seek entertainment, specifically an interest that wouldn’t disturb his winding-down brothers.
Not being allowed off bed rest would usually hinder what someone is permitted to do, but if Leo is one thing, it’s stubborn, and he won’t let a little disapproval get in the way of curing his boredom.
With this in mind, Leo continues to struggle out of his medical cot with his injured leg, grabbing the crutches and leaning on the bedside table.
Looping out of the med bay as quietly as possible to not alert his brothers, Leo comes up with a remedy for his current mood.
While maybe unwise, Leo decides to go up to the surface to watch the sunrise as the timing is perfect. He thinks of it as the best way to entertain him for a little bit while hopefully also soothing him for his slumber.
His quest to watch the sunrise starts him off towards his room in search of his mystic swords. Having to walk with crutches slows him down quite a bit, yet he can find his twin odachi leaning on his bed frame as he plucks them up to quickly and quietly teleport himself.
Going through the portal, he finds himself on a rooftop just by the sewer grate leading to his family’s lair. He soon sits down on the roof’s edge while looking toward the nearly started sunrise. Having a few minutes before the event, Leo finds himself already zoning out.
It’s been a month since the brother thwarted the invasion of the Kraang, and yet only two weeks since Leo has woken up from a resulting coma. Thus not granting him a whole lot of time to truly process the traumatic events. From almost losing his older brother to getting trapped in the prison dimension with Kraang Prime, Leo believes he’s had enough stress for a lifetime and wishes for a vacation.
As the sun slowly creeps over the horizon, Leo gets more and more lost in thought.
Between the leadership change and time spent in recovery, he can’t think of a recent time when he was able to sit down with his brothers and just take a breather. Even before the events of the invasion, Leo can only remember the constant fights with Raph that eventually pushed both his twin and younger brother away and the guilt that resulted from those events.
A wall has formed between the Hamato brothers and has left Leo without the knowledge of how to fix it. With each brother going through their struggle, it seems the wall keeps getting higher and higher, keeping them from reaching out to each other.
With the sun now shining over the horizon, Leo finds himself coming back into focus with the noises of humans starting their day.
As quickly as he can, he teleports himself back into the lair without fully planning where he’ll land, as he ends up teleporting himself right into the sight of his biggest brother.
“Leo!?” Raph shouts in surprise, “Where have you been!?”
All three of Leo’s brothers were standing in the kitchen, each with a different look plastered on their face, perfectly painting the scene that Leo teleported in on. His youngest brother, Mikey, was likely trying to calm the panicking Raphael with his nervous smile. Leo’s twin, Donnie, did not look like he wanted to be here, with his wrinkled snout and drooping eye bags. Finally, the eldest, Raphael, definitely had been freaking out with his wide eyes and creased forehead.
After a moment of pause, from Leo absorbing the scene, he replies with a simple, “Just wanted to watch the sunrise hermano, nothing else to it.”
“For 2 hours!?”
In confusion, Leo looks at the nearby oven clock that reads a glaring 8:43 AM, proving his older brother right but causing him to miss Raph’s next words that seem to keep flowing.
I don't even know why we're arguing anymore, Leo catches himself thinking as his voice gets louder and louder to match Raph’s equally increasing voice.
Leo subconsciously notices Donnie leave the room, sighing with Mikey still trying to pacify the current situation.
“Look at that; you made Donnie leave!” Leo hears the eldest shout at him.
“Me?!” Leo screeches, “How is this my fault when you won't stop being a mother hen!”
“Well, someone has to protect you guys!”
Leo blinks away the rising tears as he begins to turn and leave the kitchen, “If this is another leadership argument, I'm leaving.”
Raph calls him to stay to apologize, but Leo's already out of the room before the words leave Raph’s mouth.
With the argument halted, Raph sits down in a chair by the kitchen table and sighs, resting his forehead in his hands.
Mikey then comes up beside him, putting a calming hand on his biggest brother’s shoulder. “Leo’s fine, Raph,” Mikey sighs, “and besides, Donnie’s tracker was right, all he did was hang out on a roof.”
“I know that Mikey, just…” Raph trails off, “he could've at least told one of us beforehand. Raph was just worried.”
“I know, Raph, I know.”
