Summary
If he’s honest with himself, he gets a kick out of watching Athos lose his temper. With other people, obviously. And with toffs in particular.
“Now look here!” one of them, red-faced old sot that he is, blusters.
“Kill tallies,” says Athos, clipped and dark, finger pointing at a report. “Positions captured,” he points again. “Prisoners taken,” and again. “Mortality rates,” and his voice doesn’t even quiver. “The numbers speak for themselves. And you want to send them out like common cannon fodder,” he spits, elegant as a rapier, black-clad body half-turned as though they’re barely worth his attention.

Treville,
For the last time – no. Stop asking.
Louis
Treville takes a careful breath, a deliberate moistening of his lower lip, before looking up and asking the servant: “And where is the King currently?”
“Monsieur, he…” the man trails into silence.

Summary
He reads her letter to the weary tent, feels them ease into words of home, no matter the shape.
The first big wave of refugees also came last week. The rest of the city can no longer ignore the war… But the city is big enough, and the coffers deep enough – if the war will truly be over in the next six months, we can feed those extra mouths.
The men look at each other in silence.

Summary
“Right,” she says, briskly. “Take it off.”
“Er…!”
“The badge,” she says, slow and deliberate, nodding towards it for good measure.
“Oh. Right.”
The cadet scrabbles it off his arm as she stands, face impassive, hands on hips, eyebrows flicking every so often. She flashes, momentarily, to where she learned this stance, and frowns herself steady again. No need for that.
He holds it out to her.
“This may not seem important to you,” she says, “but this is more than just us being fussy about the uniform. You represent the Musketeers and all that that stands for. It’s more than just shooting or swordplay or guarding. It’s about a particular type of honour. You understand me?”
“Yes, Madame.”
“Right. And it’s more than that again,” she says, warming to her theme, reaching to take it off him. “It’s about the fundamentals of…” she shakes it at him “of materials.”
He frowns.

Dear Constance,
Please forgive me for not writing this letter sooner – everything became rather intense shortly after yours arrived. The cannonade kind of intense…
Both Athos and Porthos send their love, but they have written their own notes to you, so you can read for yourself. Porthos hurt his shoulder again throwing a Spanish soldier. He was rather grumpy about it for a while, but he’s recovered now…

You still take the Lord’s name in vain. Your body observes the offices, but your mind is still vainglorious, verging on the solipsistic, and your soul no closer to God.
In a lot of ways, he feels further.
It is Lent, for Heaven’s sake, he tells himself. Lent. Abstinence, discipline, contemplation of simplicity in life, encouraging the richness of your soul to flourish in cleared ground.

He feels a heavy boot in the middle of his back and, as he gets his hands under him, starts to push up, he feels a sword point in the back of his neck.
“You know,” says a conversational voice in slow, thickly accented French, “I’m in a terrible mood. It’s not made any better by not knowing how many of the rest of my brothers are left alive. How do you think I should serve you?”

Summary
Constance stands, hands on her hips. The rooms she’d struggled to lay claim to for all that first, lonely time now seem too large again, and echo uncomfortably. In truth, she’s not lived here for weeks, maybe months – they’ve merely been a place to hold changes of clothes and somewhere to sleep. The very quiet that had seemed balm and comfort now seems incomplete, constrained, an itch across her skin.
Still, these walls hold memories, the very furniture bearing the weight of secrets shared and love affirmed, sometimes in the strangest and most unexpected of ways.

Athos drops a letter into his lap and his heart bounds – it always does, always will, he thinks – at the sight of her hand.
He’s still trepidatious on opening it, though. His last to her…
13 April 1637
Dear d’Artagnan,
How are you? Well, it’s finally official – I’ve moved to the garrison now, and anything you want to send me needs to be addressed here. There is a lot to do. I’ve basically taken over the Captain’s office in order to have a proper desk for all the paperwork. I don’t know how Athos will feel about that. Hell, I don’t know how I feel about it, for the matter of that.

“How much further?”
“Not far.”
“Be more precise, please, Porthos.”
He grins over his shoulder at him, a wide beam though the edges are tired, he sees. “A mile, tops.”
Athos merely raises the middle of his brow high at this intelligence, makes a pointed heft of his burden.
Porthos, uncowed, merely says: “It’ll be worth it. Trust me.”
