"Hey," he manages. "What are you two doing?"
John considers the thing in front of him like he's seeing it for the first time. "Uh. . ."
"It's a Halloween tree," Sherlock says.
///
Trees are traditional for holidays like this, aren't they? Christmas makes a big deal of it, certainly. But how do you make a tree. . . spooky?

"Coo-ee, boys!" She pokes her head into 221B, cradling her passenger safely in her hands. "I found this little one scratching at my door -"
"They're getting out!" John yelps as about half of the cats in the room surge towards new opportunities, and suddenly Sherlock is diving towards her.
"Mrs Hudson, is the door closed downstairs?"

Summary
He ends up by some sort of control room. He knocks out the lookouts posted to the doorway and pokes his head around the corner.
A small bank of monitors, a switchboard covered in little flashing lights and big red buttons, several henchmen scattered about the room doing various things. There's a fairly innocuous-looking door with a circular window in it on the opposite wall, the wood faded enough that it nearly blends into the wall itself.
John's heart leaps into his throat. There.

Sherlock is watching him. "I still don't quite believe you convinced me to do this," he admits, amused.
"You'll do anything for disguises practice," John agrees. He's surprised as well, but he just smooths down his waistcoat and checks the ruffling on his sleeves.
"You look fine."
The doorbell rings downstairs.

"Sherlock," Mycroft says grandly. He nods at John magnanimously. "Doctor Watson."
"John," John corrects, just to be a little shit.
Sherlock's lips twitch. John remembers belatedly that he enjoys it far too much when John decides to worm his way deliberately under Mycroft's skin.
///
It's the aftermath of a case, they're sitting in a café somewhere drinking very good tea, and then Mycroft shows up.

"Did you even pass your test?"
John yanks at the steering wheel and shifts into third gear. The alleyway is a little too narrow, but there aren't any bins in it and he doesn't use wing mirrors much anyway.
"Flying colours," he says.
"I find that hard to believe," Sherlock manages as they shudder down some steps.
///
Some corrupt rozzers have it in for Lestrade. Sherlock and John intervene, but it ends up coming down to a heated car chase through the backstreets of London. The question is not can John stay ahead of the coppers, but can the coppers keep up with John?
(Despite his jumpers and pleasant demeanour and doctor's licence, John really is a lot more badass than expected.)

"- John is simply having an extraordinarily bad day."
Lestrade frowns a little. "What happened?"
"What hasn't happened?" John groans.
"Uh," Lestrade wracks his brains. "Sherlock blew the kitchen up?"
"Only a few appliances," John says. "The most severe casualty being the kettle."
Sherlock starts to protest. "There wasn't supposed to be that much potassium -"

Summary
Rain in the desert is breathtaking, completely alien after a lifetime of British downpours.
John remembers vividly the distinct crackle and rumble of the heavens before they open, before the Afghan sands are drenched in water untinged by the smog of a busy city. He remembers the way everything stops, the way every living thing from the tiniest, hardiest plants to the bloodthirstiest Taliban pause for the duration of the rainstorm to simply sit back and watch the miracle of nature. John remembers even the rushed, everlasting thrum of his field hospital slowing at the rarity.
The photo is decent - John, sat in front of a field hospital window, gazing out at the torrential rain with a faintly wistful smile on his face.
The video is different.
You can hear it.
///
John has a tin of memory sticks, all full of videos and photos and memoirs of his time in the army. The Fusiliers (and others) put it all together and gave it to him just before he was shipped out. It lives in his wardrobe now, to keep away from a prying Sherlock, but the hinges remain well-used, and the videos are watched often.

Summary
Lestrade sums the gist of it up in his head on the very first night of their first case together, as he watches them walk off and giggle and confront Mycroft Holmes and his poncy umbrella. His mind recalls vaguely how Sherlock had said Doctor Watson will be taking the bedroom upstairs just before he walked into a drugs bust and the way John had slipped out of the door of 221B and said nary a word to the police as he ran off to save a man he barely knew.
Fuck, is the closest way he can put words to the general feeling of that night. They're going to raise hell together.
It turns out to be fairly accurate.

Earsplittingly loud music, he amends almost immediately, glaring blearily at his door as the sound leaks incessantly beneath it. John Watson is a horrible man.
