The thing is, Alex was one of those people before, finding any thread to pull at to justify his dislike because they were so unfathomably different it was the only thing that made sense.
He wants to kick himself for it now. Now that he knows what Henry’s laugh sounds like from thousands of miles away, the way his bedside lamp hollows out the contours of his face when they’re video chatting far past their collective bedtimes. Now that he can’t really picture his life without Henry in it in some capacity or another. Being trusted with this stuff feels important; makes him want to be worthy of knowing it at all.
“I miss you,” Alex says impulsively on their next phone call, sleep deprived and feeling too good to stop it.
There’s just enough silence for Alex to start to worry he’s fucked things up before Henry responds: “I miss you too.”
