Vanity burns: she takes sulphur match to love and ignites it before your eyes. There were far too many things I desired; I thirsted for much beyond my paltry grasp, and while it is true that I had taken him between my fingers and exposed all vulnerability under the warm august sun: that sun soon caused sparks to kindle and crack, and he melted to shadow while my fingers broke under the pressure of holding on. The arrow of Eros missed; or perhaps it was never fired at all: but something was certainly off about the way it struck me. All I remember was that, one day, his words no longer reached me, and I felt sharp sting in my heart and a sinking feeling that something had changed.

A little while ago in my English Literature class, we were given the task to write a piece of creative fiction inspired by Jane Eyre and Charlotte Brontë's writing style, so I decided to write a this piece; the story of the folklore love triangle written in the style of Jane Eyre. I hope you enjoy!!

Dorothea knows why the warm, happy look that August gives her makes her heart speed up—she’s known it for a while and kept it neatly tucked inside her where nobody has to deal with it—but that doesn’t make it any less distracting.
“Do you wanna get out of here?” August asks, getting to her feet and offering her a hand.
