Summary
When first meeting Haytham, Shay thought two things, ‘so, this is the Grandmaster of the Templar’ was the second, the first thought, however, was ‘it’s a shame he’s English, ‘cause I wouldn’t mind a go.’
Like any reasonable gentleman, Shay made sure his first thought was not the one that decided how he would interact with people, but sometimes the fates had their own way of deciding things.

Summary
Word of Shay’s arrival in New York had reached Haytham not even an hour before, and he had already found himself on horseback, riding to meet Shay as he left the Morrigan.
Haytham had attempted to convince himself that it was so he could receive an update on Captain Cormac’s hunt for the Assassins in person, but perhaps the more truthful version was more simple: Haytham had found himself becoming incredibly distracted by the not-so-whispered promise of next time from Shay’s breathless lips.

That’s how Shay found himself in the courtyard of Fort Arsenal, pacing as if it might displace some of that anxious energy. He wasn’t sure that it was really working, but it was at least quiet. Silent, actually, save for the sound of chirping birds and rustling trees. Far more peaceful than his mind.

Summary
When Haytham Kenway breathed his last, he didn't believe in ghosts. As it so happens, it's rather difficult to continue denying the existence of something when he has, entirely against his will, found himself as precisely that something.
Lingering on as a ghost, though, is anything but ideal. It's terribly boring to be confined to the bounds of the cemetery he was buried in, unable to be seen or heard by anyone who deigns to visit him in death.
And then someone arrives who can hear him. Someone who knew him rather well, as much as anyone truly did, in life. Shay Cormac is in significantly worse shape than he had been, when they spoke for the last time—and that's ignoring the fact that he isn't breathing, either.

But in this world and this life, he left when Shay asked him to. He kept in touch with Connor over the relatively safe distance of written correspondence.
