“Sorry, Dew,” Aether chuckles apologetically, hands immediately finding their way to Dew’s hips and squeezing just a little too tight. Dew can feel the sharp point of his claws just barely poking their way through the tight fabric of his uniform pants.
“It’s just that you look…,” he trails off, “Wow.” He reaches up, smooths out the kink in the suspenders that Dew had been wrestling with. “I like these a lot.”
“So cute…” Aether’s thought trails off again.

Aether notices it right away. The way Dew seems to be favoring one arm. The way he furrows his brow and rolls his shoulder seemingly every five minutes. How he makes soft little grunts and sighs of discontent at night when he’s trying to settle into his bunk above Aether’s on the bus.
When he broaches the subject, Dew denies anything is wrong. His shoulder is just a little sore is all. Maybe he slept funny, he says, brushing off Aether’s concerns.But Aether knows the truth.

Aether is wrapping up his shift in the infirmary when he gets the text, mood lifting the moment he sees Dew’s name pop up in the notification. It had only been a few days since the band went back out on tour, and Aether was already missing his little fire ghoul something fierce.
When he opens the message, he’s greeted with a photo of Dew dressed in full costume, holding up a tiny orange kitten in his hands. Dew has sent a handful of other photos, all of the same kitten. Eating treats out of his hand, playing with a little catnip mouse, curled up and asleep in his lap. In the background he can see the rest of the pack sprawled out on the carpet of the green room with a tiny army of kittens and puppies.

“I just wanted to hear your voice, Aeth,” he admits softly. “Lonely out here without you.” Dew lets out a sad little sigh.
The sincerity in Dew’s voice breaks Aether’s heart. He knows that if he were out there with them, he and Dew would probably be curled up together between scratchy hotel sheets, making the most of their night off with lazy kisses and wandering hands. He wishes he could reach through the phone and pull the little ghoul into his warm nest back home, to wrap his arms around him and remind him how loved he is.
"I want to try something," Aether says after a few moments of silence.

Summary
The first thing Dew does is drop to his knees between Aether’s splayed thighs and look up at him through long, blonde lashes. The way the veil frames his face is perfect, the dark fabric contrasting beautifully against the pale skin of Dew’s cheeks, framing those high cheekbones and sharp jawline.
