Someone said Mark’s name but he couldn’t figure out who it was at first - who was pulling at him. Pain seemed omnipresent but it drove over him in waves, at once there and gone again as Mark strained to pay attention. There were so many voices, so many people shouting - overwhelming Mark to the point of numbing horror, to shock that filtered through him like television snow. He buzzed with every sense and yet the world felt completely dull and colorless to him at the same time.
“P - P’Vee - ” He gasped, unsure if he were whispering or yelling, and felt an arm tighten around his midsection, hauling him upright as someone nearby argued that Mark shouldn’t be standing.

There was some noise in the background, what sounded like shuffling - heavy footsteps slapping on tiled flooring. Mark could also hear mechanical beeping - a baby crying. It sounded an awful lot like a hospital. He didn’t know what to make of it. Why would Yiwaa call him from the hospital, or call Mark at all?
Then Yiwaa spoke, her voice cracking on a warble Mark had never heard come from her before, and it felt like he was shattering all over again.
“Mark - Mark, Vee’s been in an accident.”
