In college, sometimes Jack got picked on. It happened, but he wasn't worried, he'd laugh it off. It used to happen all the time back home too. But when Vlad sees these things happen, he WILL NOT stand for it. No one picks on Vladimir Alexandrovich Masters' best friend and gets away with it. No one.
(Except maybe someday, when best friends become estranged, and boiling hatred burns bright on one side, leaving the other to hope that it's only the glow of an old friendship. Then and only then will Vlad stop and let his friend feel the pain once more. And he may even twist that knife.)
