No one was making it better for him either, he heard the snide comments made about him as he walked down the school hallways. Everyone always believed he was a queer, but his dad and football covered it up well. But now he has no dad and hand doesn’t play football anymore, he knows he will only let the team down and the fact that he lost weight didn’t help his case one bit. The worst part was, he wanted to lose that weight, and he still does. He wants it all to be gone till it just kills him off eventually. That’s why he refrained from taking his shirt off in front of Exer, because he know the questions would pour in like a flash flood.
For some reason, David didn’t understand why he felt like this, and why he isolated himself then felt abandoned by people after telling them to leave him alone. Like his poor sister, who just loved him too much, his mother who would kill for him, and Exer. The man he loved most.

So when the rustling got closer, and the twigs snapping started to get closer to the beach. He just froze up, his original plan of diving back into the water failed, betrayed by his flight, fright, or freeze response. His head turned towards the pinewoods just behind him, his eyes wide with fear, waiting for whoever was in that forest to emerge. Or maybe whatever was in that forest because what if it wasn’t even a human, what if it it was some strange creature, what if the ghost stories were true?! Okay, now he was properly over thinking it, it will just be a nosy pirate.
The figure finally emerged, yet again, ruining his train of thought.

I just stay silent, waiting for him to calm down. I wouldn't wish this kind of pain on anyone, not even my worst enemy. "Losing" a parent is horrible, but losing both of them must be heartbreaking.
And I don't think he has any brothers or sisters
He has his aunt, but it's not the same, definitely not the same. Or I don't know, I'm just thinking this from my poor knowledge and experience.

“Dad, what was that?” He blurted sharply.
His father’s hand twitched at his side and he peered over the table and toward the window facing the street. “I-I have no idea.”
Exer wordlessly let his gaze follow, his stomach already tightening itself into knots. There were more noises; the rumble of feet slapping against the ground, words of precaution being hurled between people and car doors slamming shut.
The curtains were drawn but they could just about make out vague movements. Silhouettes of what looked like a person moving very slowly, bent over at the waist and stiffly trudging forward.
They were grunting. Neck jolting as they eventually got closer to the side of the house and out of view from the window.
