"You were careless in that fight,” Lucanis says. He frowns at her, watching her wipe blood from her face. He doesn’t mean to be harsh, but he spent most of the battle trying to pull Illario’s attention away from her - and she hadn’t helped much, if at all.
Rook is offended. He can see this immediately. “I was not,” she protests. She drops her hands and frowns at him.

A lazy smile curls across Lucanis’ features. “Again, querida?”
“Please, First Talon.” She giggles when he scrunches his nose at that. He jostles her with a shift of his hips where she’s seated against him, and the soft chuckle he makes when her laugh becomes a squeal of joy nearly melts her heart all over again. It’s refreshing, this lack of pretense, that leaves Rook feeling like all of the patience and pining has been deeply worthwhile.

Illario looks up to see his unexpected visitor. He smiles. “Did you come back for more, cousin? Or were you hoping that everything I said earlier was just for that silly little scribe’s benefit?”
Lucanis stands against the wall, silent.
“Oh, Lucanis,” Illario sighs. “I promise you, everything I’m saying now? Complete truth.” His smile widens. “How long before they turn on you, cousin? How long before they can’t overlook what you really are?”
To Illario’s surprise, Lucanis smiles. “You’re alone,” he says quietly. “How long before the only conversations you have are with the birds in the aviary? How long before you are on your knees in front of me, begging for the silence to stop?”Series
