Summary
The first time they hooked up, Rozanov had kissed him before Shane got on his knees. They kissed with Scott Hunter in the room next-door. And they kissed slowly and sweetly, on his apartment stairway, after Rozanov had taken his world apart and put him back together again. Hell, even in that bathroom, where he felt as if Rozanov was trampling on his bared soul, Rozanov had kissed him. So why was it different this time? He must have done something wrong. He rakes his fingers through his hair, pulling hard at it.
Was he not good enough? What did he do wrong?
Shane aches with how much he wants—needs the other man. He clings to every single interaction, every touch, every word, every glance, everything Rozanov is willing to give him. He knows they cannot be anything, like Rozanov told him in Sochi. They cannot be anything other than this arrangement. Still, there is a hollow numbness in his chest everytime he thinks about those golden curls and ocean eyes, and it doesn't go away, doesn't subside unless he is with Rozanov, and he hates himself for wishing he could have more.

It had been a few years since he’d felt like this after fucking someone, but it wasn’t the first time. It was the first time he’d felt like this after fucking Hollander, though. At first, it was always like this – a feeling of disgust and humiliation curling inside of him when whoever he’d been with left the moment they were done. He was naive back then, dumbly wishing that he could hold his hookups afterwards for just a moment so he felt like he was more than just a body; Hollander had always seemed to cling to him, had always sought out Ilya’s touch like he needed it to breathe. This time, though, Hollander hadn’t reached out for him once, hadn’t brushed his hand across Ilya’s arm or pouted his way into a kiss. He hadn’t even wanted to show off at first, and the thought that he’d hurt Hollander was swirling in his gut and Ilya felt like he was going to puke.

It was so silly. Ilya knew that. It was so beyond silly. He just couldn’t shake the feeling of dread, the feeling of regret. He regretted not kissing him. He regrets letting his mind dictate his actions and deprive him from happiness.
“I should’ve kissed you, Hollander” Ilya muttered to himself, wiping the stray tears that fell from his eyes. Because now, he had to go back to Russia with the regret of not kissing him. God. He was so stupid.
His phone dinging and lighting up snapped him out of his trance, he figured it was one of his teammates. When he looked at his phone, a message from Jane popped up. He was surprised, almost speechless actually. It read “We didn’t even kiss,” it shocked Ilya the most. Was Shane feeling the same way? Did Shane have this burning hole that felt like he was being eaten alive too?

The words stare back at him. They fucking taunt him, the same way Ilya does with that wink of his, with his smirk and his deep voice.
Abruptly, Shane feels pissed off and a little like he’s grasping for something that’s slipping away. He feels the way he did in that bathroom, the first time he had Ilya’s attention for months and didn’t want to let Ilya escape without stealing more of it.
The elevator door opens. Shane does not get off.
Instead, he presses the button for Penthouse 1 and hits send on We didn’t even kiss.
He watches the floor numbers increase as the elevator carries him back to Ilya. Shane has no idea what he’s going to say to the asshole but he knows he has so many words that are about to burst out of his mouth.
Fuck you being the first two.

He doesn’t know what happened. How his thumb managed to slip and hit send. He was backspacing—he’s absolutely positive he was backpacking—because no way in hell would he have actually sent a message to Rozanov whining about the fact that they didn’t kiss. There’s no reality in which that makes sense and doesn’t make him look like an idiotic, obsessive, overly attached freak.
