Summary
“Deserve better?” Her voice was mocking; it was an unpleasant laugh as she stared at her 10-year-old olive. She felt the dam of her emotions cracking and the pain she had buried within her for the sake of her son returning to the surface. “You have no idea what your father put me through. I deserve better. Don’t stand here and tell me who deserves what when, when you onl-” Her words halted before she had said something she regretted and made tears well up in her son’s eyes. But it was the truth: Annabeth deserved better.
Percy had promised, ‘Family, Family forever'; he had promised her that he would never leave her, and she was foolish for believing him; she had already been left behind by her father and stepmother when she was 6, left by Thalia, left by Athena, and left by Luke. She was foolish for thinking that Percy would not be any different, and she was foolish for agreeing that Percy should have taken that quest—the quest that cost him his life and the quest that had cost her husband.
