The ocean is a big place. So big that it terrifies people. So big, in fact, that scientists play a bit of sleight-of-hand, directing our attention up, at the stars, anywhere else, at an even bigger place, but one so much imaginably farther away and empty-feeling that it was undeniably the safer option. So much easier to face than pressurized darkness, than a new suffocating atmosphere below our feet, a million times better than an unknown teeming with mysterious life.
So theoretically, unless you were a blue whale, there was always a bigger fish, and blue whales weren’t even fish.
