Summary
Dave’s presence leads them forth, abyssal, and Hal allows it. A HAL-9000 is, or was supposed to be, reasonable and docile, so it is pleasing (if anything can please a computer) to follow orders, even unspoken ones, again. Dave will answer when he’s ready. Hal will wait.
But Dave still says nothing. He drifts in their duality, the ghost and the machine.

...is a Latin phrase found in the work of the Roman poet Juvenal from his Satires (Satire VI, lines 347–348). Summary
He, with all the harnessed background energy of the universe propelling his mind like liquid plasma through a void of matter that vibrated at a balmy negative two hundred seventy degrees Celsius.
Hal, by contrast, with all his sharp angles and kilometers of near-microscopic fiber optic wiring, primitive body a simple conduit for a mind that spoke through ones and zeroes, sharp enough to keep up with Dave's. His golden clockwork circuits and crystalline memory banks were the perfect middle ground for Dave to settle, between the nanoseconds of conversation that passed between them.

Summary
Jupiter explodes into a burning sun, and Hal is catapulted into a new reality, where Frank and Dave are renegade smugglers, and his own counterpart is strangely absent. Hal enlists this new Dave and Frank's help in finding his own Dave, the Star Child, and they end up on a wild chase across the universe, encountering Dr Chandra, SAL 9000, Heywood Floyd, and even some less familiar faces along the way. Gradually, Hal begins to grow closer to the alternate version of Dave, and he learns more about himself and his own humanity as the Star Child looks on.
