Summary
Through the eye-rolling, groaning, thrashing throes of sweaty delirium, the only thing Tommy registers is that he cannot escape the heat.
The fire leaps for him and he screams-
“Shh, shh, it’s okay, I promise-”
A pair of cold hands cups his face while something cool and wet draws itself across his forehead, and Tommy sobs in relief, keeping his eyes closed while the fire burns outside him.
“-m’dyin’-”
“Shh, She will not come for you,” the voice reassures as a cup tips into his mouth. He takes a gulp of whatever fizzy bitter liquid is inside before it’s taken away, and he whines because it was cold.
He has enough barely-there sense to make a questioning noise before the cold hands leave his cheeks and the lady’s voice begins to whisper, the sound begins to echo; his army training kicks in for a millisecond that this is magic, it is evil, but then the fire starts to sizzle because snow is falling on him and his eyes roll back in his head with relief as the cloth scrubs his whole face.
Consciousness is too much work, as is lucidity.
