Summary
The Cold Springs do sound nice, for once. But it doesn’t feel right, leaving his poor Lans to suffer at the hands of their own diligence like this. Even if he can’t sprout an extra arm to pat down all of their brows, there has to be something he can do.
He glances down to the platters he’s set out in front of him: the carefully-cut fruit on one end, the watermelon rinds preserved on the other. And then he remembers.

The bundle of mail from the Qinghe Nie Sect arrives in Cloud Recesses late one evening. All but one piece of the pile is a stack of invitations to this year’s Cultivation Conference, wrapped in light blue string. The last is a short, handwritten list wedged between two envelopes, unnoticeable until it flutters to the floor.

“Okay,” Jingyi says, as Sizhui puzzles this out aloud. “Okay! So the demon has been turning its victims into children.”
“I think so,” Sizhui says.
“To make them easier prey,” Jingyi says.
“Yes,” Sizhui says.
“So—” Jingyi’s voice cracks here, “this kid is Senior Wei.”
Wei Wuxian, still tangled in his own massive robes, blinks politely at them.
