“Faith,” Angel says. She turns to look at him -- his throat is working. He rubs one hand over his face. “Faith-- Buffy was killed on a routine patrol.”
Faith can’t help but visualize her lying on the ground, being fed on. Someone’s teeth at her neck. Struggling and struggling until her body finally stops fighting. She says, “Oh.”
Giles is dead. Willow’s in danger. The kid -- the little sister, supposedly -- under Angel’s protection and far away from the action. Red eyes, clenched fists. 'We lost her' and not 'she’s dead'.

Summary
“It’s not fair,” Buffy says quietly, like she’s reading her mind. Faith turns but Buffy’s staring resolutely ahead, eyes tracking a lone set of headlights winding through the country lanes.
“No. It’s not.” There’s nothing else she can say. No soft words or platitudes, no deflecting quips or angry shouts will change anything. They both know what needs to be done, and they’ve both been around long enough to know how useless fighting it would be.

“It’s the best way to bring her back,” Willow had said. Pleaded really. “We can’t leave her in a hell dimension, Faith!”
“But how do you know that’s where she is?” Faith had asked.
“I just do,” Willow said, and she had asked her to think about it, begged her really, told her she wouldn’t ever have asked if it weren’t important. And Faith believed that Willow was telling her the truth, because Willow still hated her. Hell, Buffy probably still hated her. Which was the biggest sticking point of all. Not that she would essentially be marrying a dead person, which was far from legal or ethical or moral or any of that kind of stuff. But she would be marrying someone who most likely would have chosen to never see her again. And that was worse.
“No,” she’d said again. “I can’t.”
