Summary
As was usual for these types of things, the palace ballroom was filled to the brim with people wearing the yearly rent of a decent house around their necks and wrists.
It was a party. A get-together for Tal’dorei’s rich and elite in celebration of something Kima had already forgotten. There were so many of these events it was hard to keep them straight. It seemed Tal’dorei’s elites didn’t need much of a reason to throw elaborate celebrations like this. If it wasn’t a holiday, it was someone’s birthday or the visiting of foreign dignitaries, no matter their actual level of dignity or importance.
As a result, Kime felt like she was in this ballroom at least once every week, wearing a too-tight and scratchy doublet.

Kima had never been one for waking up gradually. For most of her life, it had either been abrupt panicked shouting in the middle of the night or early morning bugles that woke her up. No longer.
Nowadays, she could wake up two, three times each morning before she had to get up. Safely in Allura’s tower, in Allura’s bed, with Allura right next to her.
Today was no different. She stretched languidly, stabbing an arm out to her left.
“Goodmorning, love,” Allura said.
Kima sighed; of course, she was already awake.

Kima dashed down the street, avoiding the biggest puddles like it would make any difference. She’d exited the metro station five minutes ago but it already looked like she’d jumped in a pool. It was really pouring down.
Autumn in this city was a fucking nightmare.
Expecting them to be slippery, Kima walked up the stairs instead of running, which was probably why she didn’t trip and break every bone in her body when she spotted a face out of the corner of her eye.
“Fucking hell,” she cursed, gripping the banister tightly as she stared at the person standing in the corner of her front porch.
“I’m sorry,” the woman spoke. “I didn’t mean to startle you. I was just looking for a spot to wait out the rain."
