This was a reoccurring fear; in part due to the copious amounts of times she'd been abandoned as a child, and in part because of how dangerous their lives were. At some point, it all became too much, and Annabeth couldn't take it anymore. Before Percy had a chance to leave her, Annabeth would do it herself. It's supposed to hurt less that way, right? Turns out, she'd been wrong; because nothing in the world had ever hurt her the way being in love with Percy Jackson had.
