“Wait until Wednesday morning, Nance,” Ace says, reading her thoughts as usual. “I can tell you need a couple nights’ sleep.”
She grumbles. “Fine, but just remember that you’re the one opting to put off sex a whole other day.”
Ace’s answering chuckle sends warm shivers through her body. “I am more than happy to make up for that extra day apart, don’t you worry.”
“I love you so much,” Nancy says, whispering it into the phone like a prayer.
“I love you, too. Now tell me all about this latest curse-breaking bad-assery and spare no detail.”
Nancy knows he’s only trying to distract her and pull her focus off the impending breakdown, but she gives into it because he’s Ace and she’ll always give in to whatever he asks of her. They talk until her voice is hoarse and she can no longer ignore the scent of ash clinging to her skin.

He had only ever been Ponytail Guy, in and out in a flash, usually Tuesdays and Thursdays, which Nancy took to mean that he had an early class on campus. The first time he actually sat down to drink his coffee, she could no longer call him Ponytail Guy—firstly because he’d trimmed his hair to the point where it was still shaggy and beautifully shiny, but not ponytail length. Secondly, he came late enough that there was a small crowd and Nancy finally had the excuse to ask for a name for his order.
“Ace,” he’d said with a lopsided grin, as if he could Nancy asked purely for herself and not for the other barista calling out drinks as they finished.

Jughead rounds the corner of the building cautiously, unsure what the muffled scrabbling noise is or what he’s about to walk into. He needn’t have worried because the sight that greets him is more amusing than worrisome; a pair of very toned legs clad in black leggings are flailing spectacularly to wedge through the open window that their owner’s torso has already cleared. They’re sporting a pair of familiar spotless pink shoes that Jughead knows from lit class.
He clears his throat. “Uh, Betty? You okay over there?”
