Lucy Carlyle hates Anthony Lockwood.
People, at least the people Lucy tends to hang out with, generally take this at face value. After all, everyone at Fittes knows about the Heaton House Horror (and what a horror it had been), the Bonneville Factory Terror (she can’t even look at crème eggs anymore without gagging), and the score of other cases that Lockwood and his merry band of incompetents have screwed up for her and the rest of Kipps’s crew. Anyone would dislike Lockwood after all that.
So she has good reasons, is what she’s saying. And that helps her sleep at night.
Which she needs.
Because in her heart of hearts, Lucy knows that her hatred of Anthony J. (who the hell uses a middle initial these days?) Lockwood actually stems from the night he fucked her in a storage cupboard at the Fittes New Year’s Eve party and then never called.

When the receptionist at the hotel tells Lockwood and Lucy that there is only one room, that room only offers one bed, a little bit of Lockwood’s soul dies. He knows this is going to be awkward. It’s going to be beyond awkward. He is a 17-year-old boy who wakes up with morning wood every single fucking day of his life, and he doesn’t think that sleeping in a bed next to the girl he’s been dreaming about naked for months is going to change that.

But this was Lucy. And the circumstances certainly weren’t out of some wild, completely unexpected dream that he’d most certainly never experienced ever. Maybe once or twice. But he always felt terrible upon waking up, because he never meant to envision Lucy that way.
In any case, those dreams - those very vivid dreams that liked to plague him every few months - were all swooping back down upon him, making his head spin and his breathing hitch.
But no. No. He had to focus. This was Lucy, and she needed his help.
Or: Lockwood's denial game is strong, until it isn't. And all he can do is sit back and watch his friendship with Lucy evolve into something more.
