After the incident with Hidoi, things went back to normal for Seikyo. He would attend classes and go back to his dorm. Everything stayed the same, except for one thing.
"Come on, Seikyo! Just one Cardfight!" Kaen whined. Ever since Seikyo saved Kaen, Kaen would hang around him all day, every day, just asking to Cardfight Seikyo, but Seikyo would always decline. Eventually, Seikyo began questioning whether Kaen actually wanted to Cardfight or it just an excuse to be around Seikyo.
"Don't you have studying to do, or like, other people to bother?" Kaen responded.
"I don't know, I just like you" Seikyo sighed in exhaustion, but he then came up with an idea.
"The end of the first-year study periods is coming up, isn't it?" Kaen was confused.
"Y-yeah, why?"
"If you can get a 100% on your assessments, then I will Cardfight you", Kaen lit up.
"You've got yourself a deal!"
"The kid's a dunce, he's very social, but it impacts his grades. I'm home free." Seikyo thought to himself. He was sure that Kaen would fail. Little did he know.
"Hey, Seikyo, Look!" Kaen showed off his assessments to Seikyo, 100% on all of them. Seikyo was dumbfounded.
"How!?" Seikyo had no idea what was happening. "Kaen's grades are horrendous, and now he's got perfect scores on his assessments? What the fuck?" He thought.
"You know what that means, Seikyo!" Kaen smiles widely. "You owe me a Cardfight!"
"What have I gotten myself into?" Seikyo thought to himself. Seikyo accepted his part of the deal. The next day, Kaen dragged him to a local card shop not far from Mizumi. The card shop was packed with teenagers and little kids; not many college students like him and Kaen.
"Uh. Kaen?"
"What's up?"
"Is this your regular shop?"
"Yeah, why?"
"Don't you play with anyone your age?"
"I do, but none of them go to card shops. I mostly play them at school". Seikyo sighed at Kaen.
"You're hopeless. Very well, let's get to it" Kaen led Seikyo to a Cardfighting table. Both set their shuffled decks down and drew five cards. Looking at the situation, Kaen couldn't help by smile in glee.
"Hehehehe..."
"What's so funny?"
"I'm just happy I'm able to cardfight you. That's all."
"This won't be happening again, so make the most of it, Kaen" Kaen slapped his cheeks and glared at Seikyo with determination.
"Right!" The young men grabbed their card each on their side of the table, readying themselves to flip the cards over.
"Stand up, Vanguard!" Kaen and Seikyo flipped their face-down cards over. In the green plains of Cray, the spirits of Kaen and Seikyo took shape. Kaen had transformed into a young boy in a glow of red, clad in golden armour, wielding a silver sabre. Opposite Kaen, Seikyo, glowing in a white light, turned into a small dragon with entirely black and white scales.
"Dragon Knight, Ranmaru!" (6000/1/10000)
"Impartial Dracokid." (6000/1/10000)
Other cardfighters heard the voice of the two boys and gathered over to watch. Some came over to watch Kaen, a regular at the shop, cardfight, while others heard the name of a card they didn't know. Murmurs were spreading about the unusual deck Seikyo possessed, from wondering about Seikyo's card to debating whether or not it was legitimate. Seikyo seemed uninterested to the audience.
"Let's get this over with."
"Well, if you don't mind, I'll take the first turn. Draw!" Kaen added a card from his deck to his hand. Skimming through his hand, Kaen pulled a card and placed it over his current Vanguard.
"I ride Dragon Knight, Mitsuhide!" (8000/1/10000) The young boy glowed in a red light and transformed. The new Vanguard was a young man in gold and red armour, with a samurai-style helmet.
"I end my turn there."
"Then, I'll take my turn. Draw. Riding Knight of Law, Errant" (8000/1/10000)
Impartial Dracokid roared and glowed white, a knight, clad in silver armour, his face covered by a helmet taking the small dragon's place.
"And I call Battle Maiden, Mihikarihime" (8000/1/10000)
Behind Errant, a girl in a red and white kimono with pink pigtails, wielding a machine gun, appeared on the battlefield.
"With Mihikarihime's skill, I soul charge" (Soul: 3)
"Mihikarihime boosts, Errant attacks the vanguard." Mihikarhime fired bullets from her machine gun. As Mitsuhide was deflecting the rounds with his sword, Errant had caught the Dragon Knight off-guard and cut through him. Seikyo had revealed his deck's top card on the game board, an angel with messy, brown hair, and he wore a dark blue uniform.
"Angelic Wiseman, no trigger." Seikyo placed the revealed card into his hand. Kaen responded by showing his deck's top card, a man in crimson armour, wielding a lance and a shield.
"Dragon Knight, Iwamoto, no trigger either." In contrast to Seikyo, who put the card in his hand, Kaen put the card into his damage zone face-up.
"That's the end of my turn."

"And it's my turn once again, draw!"
"I ride Dragon Knight, Kagekatsu!" (10000/1/5000) In a shine of red light, Mitsuhide changed form. The new Vanguard was an adult male in red armour. He had brown hair tied into a ponytail, wielded a lance, and rode atop a dragon with deep red scales.
"I'll then activate Kagekatsu's ability!" Kaen flipped the card he recently placed in his damage zone face-down and moved a card from under Kagekatsu to the drop zone, finally pointing his index and middle finger at Mihikarihime.
"Mihikarihime retreats!" Kagekatsu's lance caught fire, and he threw it at the maiden like a javelin. The fiery spear pierced Mihikarihime, and in a white glow, had disappeared into specs of light. This play caught the attention of the audience, cheering Kaen on.
"I also call Dragon Knight, Nehalem" (10000/1/5000). To the right of Kagekatsu, another man in blue armour appeared. He wielded a long spear and a shield and rode atop a dragon with dark red scales and similar shaded plates of armour.
"And I activate Nehalem's ability!" (13000) Kaen moved another card from under Kagekatsu to the drop zone. In return, he drew a card from his deck.
"Since I have more rear-guards than you, I draw one card and add 3000 power to Nehalem!" (13000)
"Kagekatsu will attack the vanguard!" The dragon and the knight in scarlet armour charged forth at Errant. As the dragon sucked in air, getting ready to breathe flames, the knight jumped and prepared to plunge the lance into Errant.
"That's a no guard."
"And then I'll check the drive trigger!" (Dragon Dancer, Marcel - 8000/1/10000)
Kagekatsu's dragon spewed crimson flames from its maw. Errant only swiftly dodged the dragon's fire but was caught off guard by Kagekatsu's lance, cutting through the silver knight.
"Damage Check" (Goddess of Order, Themis - 10000/1/10000)
"Nehalem, will attack next!" The man in blue armour rode atop his dragon, striking Errant.
"Damage Check" (Witch of Cherries, Poppy - 5000/1/5000)
"A draw trigger, the power will go to Errant, and I draw one card." (8000 > 18000)
"That's the end of my turn". Kaen grinned at Seikyo. Whether he was confident in his abilities or just happy to be there, Seikyo was unsure.

"I ride Regulation Dragon" (10000/1/5000)
Errant glowed in a white light and transformed, becoming a golden dragon.
"I also call Goddess of Order, Themis and Errant" (10000/1/10000) (8000/1/10000)
A woman with long brown hair, wearing royal and ornate garb, appeared on Regulation Dragon's right, while Errant had appeared behind Regulation Dragon.
"With a boost from Errant, Regulation Dragon attacks the vanguard." (18000/1/5000) The knight in silver armour dashed forward towards Kagekatsu. As Kagekatsu was fending off Errant, Regulation Dragon flew above Kagekatsu.
"I don't guard!"
"Checking the drive trigger", Seikyo revealed his deck's top card, showing his strongest card, Karma Dragon. (Karma Dragon - 12000/1)
While Kagekatsu was distracted by Errant's attack, Regulation breathed a fireball from above, hitting Kagekatsu.
"Damage Check" (Dragon Knight, Jaral - 12000/1)
"Themis attacks Nehalem" (10000/1/10000)
Themis channelled a ball of light energy and fired it at Nehalem. However, a girl in traditional attire with white hair intercepted the attack, blocking it.
"I guard with Dragon Dancer, Marcel!" (20000)
"Then that's the end of my turn."

"Now it's my turn, stand and draw!" Kaen smiled at the card he drew. Seikyo finally decided to ask Kaen why he was so happy.
"You've been so giddy this entire cardfight; why?"
"I mean, I'm just happy to cardfight you. Anything to show you how fun Vanguard is."
"But also, I get excited whenever I'm about to ride my avatar." Seikyo was confused at the term.
"Avatar?"
"Your Avatar is the card you're closest to, the strongest bond out of any other card."
"When you play your avatar in Vanguard, you and your avatar become one." Seikyo snickered at Kaen's explanation.
"What bullshit."
"Huh?"
"These are just playing cards, nothing more, nothing less. To form a bond with a piece of paper is honestly depressing."
"But Seikyo-"
"Vanguard is nothing but a distraction. Putting your energy into imagining the personality of artwork is a waste of time." All Kaen could do was sigh at Seikyo.
"If that's how you feel..."
"Then, I have a lot of work to do!" Rather than feel defeated at Seikyo's words, Kaen was even more determined to show him how fun Vanguard was.
"You sure are stubborn."
"But that's what makes this fun." Kaen pulled a card from his hand and raised it in the air.
"Clad in crimson, the dominator of dragons flies into battle! I ride!" Kaen slammed the card onto his Vanguard circle. On the battlefield, flames engulfed Kagekatsu. From the searing flames, a crimson serpentine dragon emerged, towering over Regulation Dragon. Atop the giant dragon was a man with brown hair in a traditional Japanese knot, donning crimson armour, wielding a large spear.
"Dragon Emperor, Nobunaga!" (12000/1) Even though Seikyo just dismissed Kaen's talk of avatars as nonsense, he could genuinely see Nobunaga and Kaen as one being. The sight terrified him.
"What am I seeing?" Seikyo thought to himself.
"Activating Nobunaga's skill!" Kaen flipped the face-up card in his damage zone face-down.
"Themis will retreat!" At Kaen's command, Themis caught fire, incinerating into white sparkles.
"I then add 10000 power to Nobunaga!" (22000)
"I'll also call Dragon Dancer, Marcel and Dragon Knight, Mitsuhide!" (8000/1/10000) Behind Nobunaga and Nehalem, two humans appeared. One was a girl with white hair in traditional robes, and the other, a young man in red and gold samurai-style armour.
"With a boost from Marcel, Nobunaga will attack the vanguard!" (30000/1) Nobunaga hurled his spear towards Regulation Dragon, whereas Marcel began praying, enchanting the spear as it began glowing red.
"I don't guard."
"Twin Drive Check" Kaen flipped his deck's top card, revealing Dragon Monk, Nagakura. (7000/1/0)
"No Trigger" Kaen continued to flip over the next card, this one revealing itself as Dragon Knight, Hijikata. (5000/1/15000)
"Critical Trigger! Power to Nehalem, and the critical will go to Nobunaga!" (20000) The diving spear strengthened the closer to the ground it got. As the spear pierced Regulation Dragon, Nobunaga's dragon continued the assault and burned Regulation Dragon with its flames.
"Damage Check" (Witch of Cats, Cumin - 8000/1/10000)

"A Draw Trigger. I'll give the power to Regulation Dragon, and I draw one card." (20000)
"With a boost from Mitsuhide, Nehalem will attack Regulation Dragon!" (28000/1/5000)
Nehalem flew upwards on his dragon as Mitsuhide dashed forward to distract Regulation Dragon. As Mitsuhide and Regulation were clashing, Nehalem and his dragon dived down, targetting Regulation Dragon. However, a young girl in clothing resembling a shrine maiden intercepted the attack.
"I guard with Battle Maiden, Kukurihime." (35000) Kaen laughed at the battle that just occurred.
"Hehehe, I'll end my turn there."

"Stand and draw." The kids watching the fight were commenting on the state of the match.
"Kaen's opponent has four damage while he only has two."
"Yeah, Kaen's got this!"
Seikyo drew his card from the top of his deck. Like his fight with Hidoi, the air around Seikyo shifted as he reached grade 3.
"The verdict has been decided. Now, accept judgment!" Seikyo rode his grade 3 over Regulation Dragon. A pillar of light fired down from the sky over Regulation Dragon. As the light subsided, Karma Dragon emerged. With a bellowing roar, Seikyo's spirit flew into Karma Dragon, completing the ride.
"Deity of Law! I ride Karma Dragon!" (12000/1) As Seikyo rode Karma Dragon, the kids were in awe over Seikyo's card. A supposed myth in Vanguard, revealed to be true.
"With the skill of Impartial Dracokid, 5000 power is added to Karma Dragon during my turn." (17000/1)
"I call Regulation Dragon, (10000/1/5000) and Battle Maiden, Mihikarihime" (8000/1/10000)
"With the skill of Mihikarihime, I Soul Charge." (Soul: 7)
"And add 2000 power to Regulation Dragon with its skill." (12000/1/5000)
"Finally, I'll activate the skill of Karma Dragon." (Soul: 4)
"By Soul Blasting three cards, I can draw one card, and I'll give 5000 power to Regulation Dragon." (17000/1/5000)
"And with Errant's skill, if I've soul blasted this turn, he gets 4000 power." (12000/1/10000)
Kaen noticed how Seikyo was playing. "Rather than give the power to Karma Dragon like in his fight with Hidoi, he opted to choose Regulation Dragon to get it." Kaen thought to himself. "He's got two big attacks coming."
"With a boost from Errant, Karma Dragon will attack the Vanguard!" (29000/1) Karma Dragon ascended upwards, preparing a ball of violet energy in its maw.
"I'll play a no guard!"
"Twin Drive Check" He flipped the first card, revealing another copy of Karma Dragon. (12000/1)
"And the second check." The second card flipped was a young girl wearing a magical robe but had an apron covering it. (Witch of Big Pots, Laurier - 5000/1/20000)
"Heal Trigger. I'll give the power to Regulation Dragon, and I'll heal one damage." (22000/1/5000)
Karma Dragon blasted the beam, and it engulfed Nobunaga. As the smoke cleared, Nobunaga and his dragon were still standing, as were his rear-guards.
"And my damage check." The card Kaen revealed was a young man with shaggy blue hair in red armour. (Dragon Knight, Burj - 8000/1/10000)
"No trigger."
"With a boost from Mihikarihime, Regulation Dragon will attack Nobunaga." (30000/1/5000)
Mihikarihime fired bullets from her machine gun as Regulation jetted forward with its claws but was intercepted by a woman in tribal attire, fending off the attack with fans made of dragon scales.
"Guard with Dragon Dancer, Barbara!" (32000)
"Then that's my turn."

"Now, I stand and draw." Kaen drew a card from his deck and picked two cards from his hand, calling them to his open rear-guard circles.
"I call Dragon Knight, Jaral (12000/1) and Dragon Knight, Burj!" (8000/1/10000)
On Nobunaga's left, a man in red and white armour, riding a crimson wyvern, appeared with a young man with bulky red armour had appeared behind Jaral.
"If I have more rear-guards than my opponent, Jaral gets 5000 power during my turn." (17000/1)
"And Burj gets 1000 power for each of my opponent's open rear-guard circles." (10000/1/10000) Seikyo viewed Kaen's board, trying to anticipate his next move.
"He's got a full board, and with Burj's skill, Kaen's probably gonna go after my rear-guard to gain more power", Seikyo thought to himself.
"Unite! Dragon riders in the clashing flames! Transcension!"
"Huh? Transcension!?" In Seikyo's shock, Kaen pointed to a single card that sat above his damage zone, face-down.
"Transcension. A special skill every fighter can use once in a cardfight." Kaen then pointed to another card as well, this one lying above Seikyo's damage zone.
"You have a Transcension card yourself. I assumed you'd know what it was." Seikyo gazed down at his face-down Transcension card.
"I vaguely remember, now that you mention it."
"Now, let me show you my Transcension! Crimson Formation!" The kids watching the fight cheered as Kaen announced his move.
"Yeah, that guy's as good as finished!"
"Kaen can't lose!"
"I counterblast and soul blast! And I'll force three of my opponent's rear-guards to retreat!" Seikyo looked at his field, eyeing the three rear-guards he had.
"And with one move, Kaen was able to eliminate my entire formation." Seikyo thought. He continued to move his rear-guards to the drop zone.
"Then, I add 5000 power to all of my rear-guards!" Once Crimson Formation's effect had resolved, Kaen flipped the card face-up.
"With Burj's skill, he gets another 3000 power!" (18000/1/10000)
"And I also activate Nobunaga's Transcension Break!"
"Transcension Break?"
"Once Transcension has been used, the Transcension Break becomes active."
"Nobunaga's Transcension Break gives him 3000 power for each of my opponent's open rear-guard circles!"
"So that means-"
"Exactly! Plus 15000 power to Nobunaga!" (27000/1)
"By using one card, not only has Kaen wiped my field, but he's also strengthened his board." Seikyo thought to himself. "Transcension is a fearsome skill."
"Mitsuhide boosts Nehalem. Attacking the Vanguard!" (28000/1/5000)
The two knights charged forward but was blocked by a young girl dressed like a witch and wielding several pots.
"I guard with Laurier." (32000)
"Marcel boosts, Nobunaga attacks the vanguard!" (40000/1) Rather than launching his spear, Nobunaga dashed forward atop his dragon. However, the attack was blocked by a white-robed man, casting a magic circle to defend Karma Dragon.
"I guard with Law Oracle, Datin." (7000/1/0)
"By discarding one hand card, I nullify the attack."
"Well then, I'll check the Twin Drive!" Kaen revealed the top card of his deck, showing Dragon Dancer, Marcel. (8000/1/10000)
"Second check!" The second card he revealed was Embodiment of Spear, Tahr. (5000/1/15000)
"Critical Trigger! All effects will go to Jaral!" (27000/2)
"With a boost from Burj, Jaral attacks the vanguard!" (45000/2)
"No guard."
Jaral rode atop his dragon, cutting through Karma Dragon.
"Damage check." Seikyo flipped the top card of his deck, revealing Regulation Dragon. (10000/1/5000) The second card was Angelic Wiseman. (12000/1)
"And now my turn is over." Kaen smiled at the ensuing fight.
"You're pretty good to have survived a Transcension."
"Hmph."

"Alright then, stand and draw." Seikyo drew one card from his deck.
"I'll call Angelic Wiseman (12000/1) and Battle Maiden, Mihikarihime." (8000/1/10000) On Karma Dragon's left, an adult angel appeared with a girl in a red and white kimono with pink pigtails, wielding a machine gun appearing behind him.
"With the skill of Mihikarihime, I soul charge." (Soul: 6)
"Now Karma Dragon will attack the vanguard." (17000/1) Seikyo swiped Karma Dragon into the rest state but hesitated, looking at his Transcension card.
"It's time." Seikyo thought to himself and immediately reached for the card.
"Transcens-" As Seikyo's fingertips touched the card, he felt as if he had transported to a new place. He looked around to see a shrine, only slightly visible from flickering lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Looking around, he also noticed that the cardfighting table was still in front of him, his cards on the table, with his fingers grazing the Transcension card. As he finally took his surroundings in, Seikyo felt a heavy breeze. He could hear low grumblings and deep breaths. Turning his head slightly, Seikyo saw it; a dragon with black and white scales and glowing yellow eyes. He could see Karma Dragon, and it felt like the dragon was standing behind him, like Karma Dragon existed. Mustering through the fear, he could only spew a couple of words.
"I don't accept you." The dragon grumbled again, and Seikyo removed his hand from the card. As he retracted his hand, Seikyo could see he was back in the card shop, Kaen opposite to him with his cards on the table and the kids surrounding them, watching the fight.
"Seikyo, are you okay?" Seikyo looked at his right hand in a daze, frozen in place from the vision he just had. Hearing Kaen's question, Seikyo snapped back to reality.
"Y-yeah, I'm fine. Attacking your Vanguard with Karma Dragon." (17000/1)
"I won't guard." Seikyo flipped the top card of his deck for his Twin Drive. The first card depicted a young girl with pink hair in a paler pink robe. (Witch of Cherries, Poppy - 5000/1/5000)
"A Draw Trigger. I'll give the power to Angelic Wiseman, and I'll draw one card." (22000/1)
"Second Check." The second card had a blue spider, weaving with its silk threads. (Dream-waving Spider - 5000/1/15000)
"A Critical Trigger. Power will go to Angelic Wiseman, critical will go to my Vanguard." (32000/1) (17000/2). Karma Dragon lunged forward at Nobunaga, unleashing a brutal attack with its claws.
"Damage Check." Kaen flipped his card for his damage check. The first card showed an adult male in red armour. (Dragon Knight, Kagekatsu - 10000/1/5000). The second card revealed was also a man in red armour. This one, however, was a bit younger. (Dragon Knight, Hijikata - 5000/1/15000)
"I also got a Critical Trigger! All effects will go to Nobunaga!" (22000/2)
"Angelic Wiseman now attacks. With his skill, I soul blast and add 5000 power to Wiseman." (37000/1) Both the angel and the young girl supporting him fired bullets from the guns they wielded. The attacks, however, were blocked by a woman in traditional garb, using crimson flames to deflect the bullets.
"I guard with Dragon Monk, Nagakura!" (7000/1/0)
"Discarding one hand card to stop the attack from succeeding!"
Looking at the board, Seikyo knew there wasn't much he could do.
"Over to you."

"Alright, I stand and draw." Kaen drew his next card.
"Stand once more, lord of the flame dragons, I ride!" Kaen placed another card on the vanguard circle. In a blaze of crimson flames, Nobunaga stood once again, ready to battle.
"Dragon Emperor, Nobunaga!" (12000/1) Seikyo tried to analyse Kaen's upcoming move.
"Riding into another Nobunaga boosts his soul, but I don't see what else Kaen would gain from it." As Seikyo finished his train of thought, he realised what Nobunaga's skill does.
"Activating the skill of Nobunaga!" As Kaen declared his move, he flipped one of his damage cards face-down. "Angelic Wiseman is retired from the battlefield!" Nobunaga pointed his lance at the angel as he combusted into flames, leaving only white dust sparkling through the battlefield.
"With the skill of Dragon Dancer, Marcel, when an opponent's rear-guard is retired, I move her to the soul, and I draw one card!"
"And with Mitsuhide's skill, I soul blast and Counter Charge, as well I add 4000 power to Mitsuhide!" (12000/1/10000)
"And of course, Nobunaga's Transcension Break is still active. Adding 12000 power to Nobunaga!" (24000/1)
"Eliminating the opponent's forces and strengthening his own. That's how Kaen plays." Seikyo thought to himself.
"Mitsuhide boosts, Nehalem attacks Karma Dragon!" (22000/1/5000)
"I'll guard with Dream-waving Spider." (5000/1/15000)
"Next, Nobunaga will attack your vanguard!" (24000/1) Atop his dragon, Nobunaga pounced towards Karma Dragon. His spear dipped in flames. The attack, however, was blocked off by a witch in pink garb and a knight in silver armour. (Witch of Cherries, Poppy - 5000/1/5000) (Knight of Law, Errant 8000/1/10000)
"Is that all you're going to use? If I get one trigger, it's over for you."
"I know what I'm doing," Kaen smirked at Seikyo's declaration.
"Very well, checking the Twin Drive!" Kaen flipped the top card of his deck, revealing Dragon Knight, Iwamoto. (10000/1/10000)
"Second check!" Kaen once again flipped the top card of his deck, revealing a golden glow. (Dragon Knight, Hijikata - 5000/1/15000)
"A Critical Trigger! All effects to Nobunaga!" (34000/2) Nobunaga leapt off his dragon, dashing past the guardians, going straight for Karma Dragon.
"Show no mercy to those who underestimate the king of dragons! Blazing Flash Lance!" Nobunaga pierced Karma Dragon with his burning spear. The dragon slowly began to dissipate into white sparkles.
"Damage Check." Seikyo slowly revealed the top card of his deck, showing it to be Karma Dragon. Seikyo placed it in the damage zone.
"Well, I guess you beat me." The kids in the card shop cheered at Kaen's victory against Seikyo. Kaen was high fiving all of the children who had come up to congratulate him. Seikyo could only smile at what he saw.
"I guess I shouldn't have judged him. The kids here like him" With his business taken care of, Seikyo took his leave. In the middle of talking with the kids who watched the fight, Kaen noticed Seikyo leave. While he didn't say anything, all Kaen could think of is was Seikyo last turn in that fight.
"What happened, Seikyo?"
