Loving Through Gills

Summary:

Kirishima never grew up with much, but, one day, he decided to dye his hair red and leave town to pursue better opportunities... ones that he never found until he got a job at Plus Ultra Bar. The job itself wasn't much, just slinging around could smelling drinks at metal and rock junkies, listening to the live music the locals brought in, and doing his best to stop fights from happening.
It was barely enough to keep paying rent for his shitty apartment, but it was the start he was looking for.
Eventually, it even turned into home, with regulars who knew his name and a few people who didn't quite belong stumbling in.
Then, somehow, Kirishima went from being a poor bartender to having some of the richest friends he knew and even owning one of the world's most expensive pets. However with the hole in his already soft heart, can he keep from falling in love with this fish boy?

Notes:

The answer is obviously no.
Kiri is definitely gonna fall and fall hard ugh
Sorry for this, but KiriDeku needs so much more love, oop. Instead of working on literally any of the open fics I have, I started another! Yay!
* leans to the crowd *
[crickets chirp]
Yeah, that was about what I was expecting lol...
Anyway, I love this ship with all my heart and am going to try not to make this any angstier than possible.

Chapter 1: How It All Started (the teaser)

Chapter Text

"Hey, Momo, honey," the girl purred into the phone, crossing her fingers and hoping the phone call went as planned, "Remember how happy you were after setting Kyouka up with her whole band shindig?"

Yaoyorozu Momo was a pretty little rich girl and heir to the multi-million dollar company Creati Industries. Through mutual connections, she came across Ashido Mina who took her to all of the gay clubs and half beat bars her spoiled self had never been allowed to even look at.

One day while on a walk down memory lane at Plus Ultra bar, Ashido was showing the innocent rich girl where she had started in the rock scene with the alias Alien Queen. Of course, that didn't last long after the industry picked her up and changed her image to rockin' girl and pop icon Pinky, but it did give her connections to set her friend up with who would soon be her Sugar Baby, and girlfriend, Kyouka Jirou.

"Well of course I do! Honestly, I wasn't too sure about taking in a 'Sugar Baby' as you had so eloquently put it; however, that day made me joyous that I gave your proposition a second chance!" Yaoyorozu wasn't new to the idea of paying for a person's company, but she had never imagined it working in a relationship-sense as well. Of course, the innocent young woman was worried about several things when it came to the idea, but she was easily swayed when Ashido leaned in, looked at the stage, and said, “My friend up there wants a girlfriend, but she says she doesn’t have enough time to date with trying to get the band up and on their feet.”

The moment Jirou stepped on stage, with her makeshift band “Earphone Jack,” Yaoyorozu was completely blown away. She was so used to classical music played on thousand dollar instruments that this bottom-feeder punk rock blew her away completely. Their instruments were worn from years of use, and it was amazing that they were even able to play half as well as they did.

Jirou, being the hopeless band lesbian she was, couldn’t deny an offer for a drop dead gorgeous girlfriend who even offered to help her out with the band. Of course, the small town punk girl wasn’t expecting a completely new set of instruments- or to learn that she had been courted by the only daughter of the biggest industry in Japan.

Regardless of how atypical their relationship was, they loved each other dearly.

“Why?” the dainty woman spoke to her girlfriend more than Ashido did, so there wasn’t anything she could have needed in the short time they had gone without speaking- certainly nothing that Jirou would have gone to Ashido for. The pink haired pop girl was proud to support herself and her own interests, so it couldn’t be something for her. “Is something up?” she prodded.

“Well Kiri has been down lately, and I just wanted to get him something exotic to cheer him up. I can cover the costs of the gift, but I’m going to need a little help with remodeling,” Ashido spoke as sweetly as possible, knowing that the rich girl had a soft spot for spoiling cute girls. Naturally, she was ready to defend her stance, seeing as the initial deal easily came off as shady. However, Ashido wasn’t going to state out loud that she wanted to get Kirishima an exotic pet that had been threatening the borders of animal and human laws- a merman.

“I was offered a deal by the old folks that sold me my island beach house. In order to keep hunters away from their beach, they caught something and have offered me a deal as long as I take it to the mainland… I’m sending you the info now,”

[‘Midoriya’ type mer-person (possible hybrid). Human sex equivalent: male. Shifting abilities: unknown. Other abilities: unknown.]
The “Midoriya-type” mer-person was a subspecies of mer that were known for their iridescent greens and their association with good luck. This specific Midoriya had a head full of seaweed colored hair with the most beautiful emerald eyes. His tail and scales were where the hybrid-theory came into play. His tail alternated colors. The majority of it was shifting hues of green, from forest to turquoise- which was natural for Midoriya type mers, but there were occasional patches where the color shifted to almost a sapphire.

“You are aware that he could be an Ao mix, right?” Yaoyorozu warned, fearing that this deal was too good to be true. Where Midoriya type mers were known to be friendly and sociable (within their packs, specifically, but they had been known to attach to humans as well), Ao types were vicious predators and, in the human world, typically kept in mer-fight rinks.

“Yes, but do you see the deal I’m getting? Plus I know Kiri will be nice to him! Who knows what could happen if someone else snatches him up? It’s obvious that, if he is a half-breed, he’s mostly Midoriya, so there’s a chance that he has little to no Ao tendencies,” the usually happy girl pleaded, “I met him in person once… The mer, he seems to react to the name ‘Izuku’... He just looked so broken sitting there in that small tank, and you know how Kiri has been since his last boyfriend…”

Kirishima Eijirou wasn’t anything special; he was just an energetic bartender at Plus Ultra Bar. From there, he was pulled into the gang just like Jirou had been. He had faced quite a few self esteem issues because of his “lower” status, and, when his boyfriend of two years, Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu, broke it off with him, that spiralled their usually happy friend into an ugly greyish slump. It turned out his lover had been two-timing him for the past year of their relationship, and Kirishima couldn’t hold it against him- which was a big part of the problem. They were so similar dating wasn’t the route that they should have taken.

Kirishima was the one who insisted that they could make it work out, and Tetsutetsu agreed… until apparently he didn’t…

“I am aware of how disheartened he was after that breakup. Cheating is absolutely despicable!” Yaoyorozu agreed, but she knew that she couldn’t just give up that easily, “But what if this mer does have Ao tendencies? What if this makes him worse?” Both girls were worried about their friend. He let his black roots grow out a full inch, and, while that didn’t sound “too bad,” that was after five years of meticulous red hair dye. He had the entire bar- other than the hiring staff that had seen his ID stating that his natural hair color was black- convinced that he was born with bright red as his natural hair color.

“Then at least he’ll know we care! Besides! Kiri couldn’t hurt a fly!” Ashido was prepared to beg.

Letting out a sigh, Yaoyorozu couldn’t contain the excitement that she had bubbling up within her about the idea of giving Kirishima his own mer, “I will bring the construction crews to the beach house in two days. You are going to have to keep him away from his house for at least a week after that. Just do not breathe a word of this to him… and I want his reaction on camera,” she negotiated easily, just as Ashido knew she would.

“Of course, sweetheart! I’ll tell Blasty to keep them out a bit longer,” she giggled into the phone, saying her happy goodbyes before hanging up and dialling a second number, “Hi, yes this is Ashido Mina. I am interested in the deal you’ve offered me. I can fly out there tomorrow if you wish to meet in person.”

Life felt good when all of her plans fell into place.
