Chapter Text
-6 months later-
Sylvie scrambled from under the covers, leaving the warmth of the bed.
“Matt! Wake up, we are supposed to be at the church in 20 minutes and you know how Chicago traffic is.” Matt, who had just woken up, rubbed his eyes cursing his best friend and his ability to party the night before. “They wouldn’t get married without their two best friends, would they? It’s always hard to tell with those two.”
Sylvie had reappeared from the bathroom dressed in clothes that were easy to take off so she could slip on her maroon bridesmaid dress. “Hey, are you texting Sev that we’ll be late?” She asked her boyfriend who was staring at his phone. “Yes, I did and also pulled up the directions to the church. Are you ready to go?”
Sylvie grabbed her duffel bag full of things Stella might need in case of an emergency which was now stuffed full because you can never be too careful and Sylvie thought of everything that could go wrong. Being late wasn’t one of them though. They shuffled out of the loft, locking the door behind them and heading to the elevator.
They did what everyone does and hit the button for the lobby and waited until the elevator car made it to its destination but instead of going down two floors and opening; it slowed to a stop.
“No this cannot be happening again. We have to get to the church and help set up and get ready-.” Sylvie was looking for a way out, but knowing from experience there wasn’t one; she didn’t hear Matt whisper her name. “-how is Stella going to get ready without me and-” she turned around to see Matt on one knee holding a velvet box and tears started to stream from her eyes.
“Sylvie Brett, I am so glad that we got stuck in this elevator almost a year ago because that day was the day I knew that I would wait an eternity for you. You’re my everything and I want to make sure you know that every day for the rest of your life, so Sylvie Brett will you marry me?”
“Yes, of course, I’ll marry you!” Sylvie wiped away the tears before Matt slipped the ring on her finger then crashed into a tight hug where Matt spun his new fiancee around. When they pulled apart from the kiss they felt a shake of the elevator car as it started moving again and when it opened Sylvie was surprised to see her entire firehouse family, including Stella and Severide, in the lobby of Matt’s apartment. Cruz walked towards them swinging what Sylvie assumed was the elevator key with a wide grin.
After a few minutes of congratulations from everyone, Sylvie spoke up. “Are you guys sure you’re okay with Matt and I sharing your big day with our engagement?”
“Sylvie, for the 100th time, we would love to share this day with our two favorite people and besides Casey already asked that question before he proposed,” Severide interjected.
Satisfied with the answer Sylvie got the attention of the group, “let’s go get Severide and Kidd married everyone!” Everyone filled out of the building into their cars but Matt and Sylvie stayed back for a second. “We’re gonna talk about you giving me a panic attack later but I don’t care because either I’m dreaming or Matt Casey proposed to me.” She stared down at the ring on her finger feeling something she has never felt with her previous engagements: the feeling that this one is forever.
“You're not dreaming because I did ask you to marry me and I can’t wait for your spreadsheet planning action.” He smiled as he bent down to kiss his fiancee and his forever. Sylvie broke away from the passionate kiss again laughing, “come on before we are actually late to our best friends’ wedding.” They pushed the glass door open, hand in hand, ready to take on life together.
