Chapter Text

Wanda knocked on Natasha’s front door. She hadn’t seen her girlfriend all day and she missed her. She had felt more and more that Natasha was pulling away from her. She didn’t know what to do. Or if she was just imagining things. Natasha was after all about to move away and was probably preoccupied with getting ready for college. She could just be getting in her own head.

Natasha was in her room stand in front of her mirror. She looked like she was trying to psyche herself up for something. Wanda wondered for what. Then Natasha started to talk to herself. At first Wanda didn’t seem to understand the meaning of the words and when she finally did, she felt like she couldn’t breathe.

“Hey Wanda, I love you and that’s why we need to break up,” said Natasha to the mirror. Wanda felt as if she was going to vomit. It was clear that Natasha hadn’t been planning to say it like that but the fact that she had to practice a breakup at all hurt. It hurt bad. Wanda didn’t want to hear anything else. She couldn’t be here in this place a second longer. Wanda practically ran from the scene.

She knew that Natasha was in hot pursuit of her, but she didn’t stop. Being in this house was unbearable. Being near Natasha was the single most painful experience of Wanda’s life. She had to get out. She just had too. Maybe this was a bad dream, and she would wake up and find Natasha right next to her ready and willing to soothe her back to sleep. To tell her that she would never even think about breaking up with her.

At the door Natasha caught up with her.

“Wanda, look at me please,” begged Natasha. Wand turned around to face her. She was crying. Wanda didn’t care. Or she tried not to care but did anyway. Wanda could feel her tears coming and there was nothing she could do to stop them.

“What more is there to say?” asked Wanda. her voice came out sounding harsher than she meant it to. It didn’t help that her voice was thick from the sob that she was holding back.

“Wanda I…” started Natasha

“I can’t be here right now,” said Wanda. She turned around and slammed the front door in Natasha’s face. She didn’t let herself let go until she got to her room. Once in bed she opened the flood gate and sobbed until she could cry no longer. By the time her mother came into her room she was all out of tears, something that Wanda never thought was possible, and she was glaring at her celling.

“Wanda, do you want something to eat?” asked Magda. Wanda said nothing but she shook her head no. Magda seeing her daughter in so much pain sat down on her bed. She leaned over to kiss her daughter on the forehead.

“We’ll save you some food for when you get hungry,” said Magda. She moved to get off the bed but was stopped by Wanda’s voice.

“I’m never gonna be hungry again,” sobbed Wanda.

“Oh honey, what happened?” asked Magda.

“Natasha,” said Wanda before breaking out into fresh tears.

“Did Natasha breakup with you?” asked Magda. She had a tone of voice that was meant to be soothing but made Wanda mad.

“YES! She broke up with me,” yelled Wanda. She could feel her magic trying to get out. She was losing control of it and things could get dangerous for both herself and her mother, but Wanda didn’t care. She wanted to destroy the world. She wanted to tear it all down to the ground. Red tendrils came out of her fingers.

The stuff in her room started to move. Magda sighed and left the room quietly leaving her daughter alone. Wanda was clearly not ready to be soothed. With someone like Wanda it was better to let her destroy and rebuild and let out all of her emotions out before trying to talk to her. Magda figured that anger was better than uncontrollable sobbing.

Once Wanda was alone in her room she let go of her reign over her magic. Books flew off their shelves, the lights flickered. Wanda picked up a vase on her desk and smashed it against the wall. The papers on her desk went flying after Wanda throw them off the desk. But they didn’t hit the ground, instead they joined the growing tornado of stuff tearing up the room. Wanda picked up a ruler and started to smash anything that would break, the broken things joined the storm of stuff. Then she started to punch her wall until her knuckles started to bleed. When she was done with that, she slid down the wall and pulled her knees to her chest. She left a smear of blood on the wall.

All of her anger left her as suddenly as it came, and all she was left with was emptiness. She felt numb. But more than anything she felt hungry. Leaving the ruin of her room she went in search of food. Her mother, father, and brother were all waiting for her at the dining room table. She took a big breath and sat down next to Pietro who passed her a plate of food. Wanda took a big bite.

After dinner Marcus took Wanda into the bathroom to clean up her wounded her hands.

“Wanda, I wished you’ve took more care in your anger,” said Marcus taking Wanda’s hand in his own. He gently started to clean her wounds. Wanda winced a little. But she could feel her father’s love in the gentle way he tended to her hands.

“I’m fine dad,” said Wanda. She removed her hand from her dad’s hands. She thought about her hand healing and her magic moved around her hand healing it. Her dad gazed down at her hand. He shook his head in disbelief.

“I don’t think you are,” said Marcus.

“Look good as new,” said Wanda holding up her hand.

“I wasn’t talking about your hand, Wanda,” said Marcus. Wanda collapsed into her father’s strong arms. She started to cry again. Marcus didn’t say much more but being in his arms made her feel better than she had all day.

“I love her,” said Wanda.

“I know honey,” said Marcus.

Pietro was waiting for her in her destroyed bedroom. He was looking around at her handy work. He looked impressed and a little scared.

“Remind me never to make you mad,” said Pietro.

“I wasn’t mad. Not really,” said Wanda.

“Remind me never to break your heart,” corrected Pietro. Wanda started to put her room back together. Broken pieces fixed themselves. The bed made itself. Pietro took a seat on the newly made bed. Wanda sat down next to him.

“So, she broke your heart too, huh?” said Pietro.

“More like shattered it,” said Wanda.

“Look I know that our situation isn’t the same but I’m here for you,” said Pietro.

“You’re a good brother Pi,” said Wanda. She leaned her head on his shoulder.

“Should we do a movie marathon?” asked Pietro.

“A Disney Princess marathon?” teased Wanda. She was only being half serious she knew that Pietro would do anything she wanted right now. But Disney was a stretch for him. He spent a sad amount of his brain power pretending he didn’t like Disney movies.

“If you want,” said Pietro.

“I do want,” said Wanda. Pietro sighed but lead the way to the living room. They had an old VHS player in there. They had grown up watching all of the princess movies as little kids, so they already had all of the movies.

“What order should we watch them in?” asked Pietro.

“From the beginning of course,” said Wanda. She pulled out ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ from a shelf. Pietro cracked his knuckles and then he rolled his neck.

“Okay, but if we’re doing this, we have to do this. We need snacks,” said Pietro.

“Yes! Snacks!” said Wanda.

The next few days passed in a blur of tears. But each day she got out of bed and went through the motions of living her life. It was the hardest thing to keep going and yet she did. Each day it was hard to just pull herself out of bed and it didn’t seem to be getting any easier, but she hung on to hope that one day it would.

Wanda was wide awake, and it was two in the morning. A plan was starting to from in her head. If she closed, her eyes and focus all of her energy on Natasha she could feel what she felt. It was almost like there was a golden string connecting their hearts together. If she could feel Natasha, then she could probably find her as well. She could catch a bus to Seattle. She had to go to Seattle and find Natasha. She felt in her heart that it was the right thing to do. She just had to wait a few hours so she could buy a bus ticket.

Wanda left early in the morning before anyone in the house was awake. She left a note that was vague but had just enough information to keep her family from worrying too much. She knew that it was a Thursday and that she had school, but this seemed more important. Finding Natasha seemed like the most important thing in the world. She didn’t even think about calling Natasha though that would probably be easier. She didn’t want to give Natasha the chance to reject her.

The Greyhound station was quite when Wanda got there, but there was a very grumpy looking woman at the ticket booth. Wanda walked up to her. She looked up from the romance novel that she was reading.

“If you want to take the train this is the wrong ticket booth,” said the women.

“I umm want a bus ticket to Seattle,” said Wanda. Her voice sounded high pitched and uncertain even to her ears.

“You got a way to pay for that?” asked the woman. Wanda pulled out a roll of cash.

“There is a bus that leaves in thirty minutes,” said the woman. Wanda handed the woman money and went to sit down on a bench to wait for the bus. Thirty minutes was cutting it close. Soon her family would be awake, and they would most certainly come after her.

Wanda got onto the bus and tried to find a seat that didn’t have anybody anywhere near it. She really wanted to be alone at the moment. There was a voicemail on her phone that had been burning a hole in her jean’s pocket since yesterday afternoon. She hadn’t had the courage to listen to it yet but now seemed to be the moment. Wanda took out her phone and stared at the screen. There was one unopened voicemail on it. She took a big breath before pushing play.

“Wanda, I love you. Before I say anything else I need you to know that. My love for you has been the best part of me for so long that I don’t know how to live without it. I made a mistake. I was afraid. I should have just talked to you. I know I don’t deserve a second chance Wanda. I don’t know how I am going to live without you, but I know that I cannot live with myself if I don’t at least try to make amends. I’m sorry Wanda. It’s unfair of me to ask for you back after I tore us asunder, but I am asking. I’m asking because I could forgive you if you didn’t say yes but I couldn’t forgive myself if I didn’t try. This is me trying. Please come back Wanda, I love you.”

It was everything she wanted to hear. It was everything that she needed to hear. It should have made her happy but instead it made her heart ache. But she didn’t call Natasha back even though she wanted to. She’d be with her in person soon. Everything would be okay once they were back together. Wanda’s heart raced. She closed her agist the hope that was forming in her chest. She couldn’t start dreaming about being with Natasha.

The bus seemed to take forever to get to Seattle. Each nowhere town had a bus stop. As the bus meandered its way down I5 Wanda’s mind spiraled through all of the worst-case scenarios. She’d get there and Natasha would laugh in her face, she would change her mind. Wanda focused on Natasha and their connection and tried to quite her mind. She tried to reel black her brain to rationality, with minimum effect.

When at last the bus pulled into the station Wanda was a complete mess. She was a whole less sure that she should be doing this. She should have called first like a normal person. But she had come this far so she left the station. She was in the International District of Seattle, and it was nowhere near where Natasha was. She focused again on Natasha, now that she was closer to her, she found it even easier to follow the golden thread. She looked at a map before getting onto a bus.

Once she got onto campus it was like she could see traces of Natasha everywhere. It was almost like there was glowing footsteps leading the way she needed to go. She followed them to a dorm building. She could feel Natasha now without even trying. She was feeling miserable. Her heart was broken, Wanda could feel it like physical pain. But there was also a shard of hope, very small but definitely there. This was unquestionably where Natasha was.

She entered the building behind a group of first-year students. It was a little troubling how easy it was to get into the building, but Wanda didn’t have time to worry about that now. She could see the footprints even better now. She let them lead her to right outside room 212. The door had Natasha’s name on it. Wanda hesitated. She studied the door handle like she thought maybe it would burn her if she touched it. She took a deep breath before knocking on the door. It only took a moment for the door to be cracked open, but it felt like an eternity.

Wanda saw her hair before she saw the rest of her, and it was like her lungs stopped working. Her heart was working too well and the sound of it in her ears was distracting. The door swung open, and Wanda was all but pulled through the door.

“Wanda! what are you doing here?” asked Natasha. Wanda wanted to kiss her in that moment, but she held back. It was awkward not to great Natasha with a kiss. But she was unsure of herself again.

“I needed to see you, Tasha,” said Wanda.

“So, you… how did you even get here?” asked Natasha.

“I got on a bus. But then when I got to Seattle, I could feel you. I found that once on campus I could follow these… it’s hard to explain,” said Wanda.

“So, you used magic to find me?” asked Natasha.

“Yes,” said Wanda.

“You could’ve called,” said Natasha.

“I thought this way was better,” said Wanda. She moved into Natasha’s personal space. She wrapped her arms around her. Natasha was tense at first, but she melted into her arms. Wanda berried her face in Natasha’s neck. She took in a deep breath. She loved the way that Natasha smelled. She still smelled like lavender, sage, lemon peel, and the something that was just Natasha. Wanda leaned into to kiss her. The kiss was desperate and needy.

The kiss felt like coming home. She might have dwelled on how cheesy that thought was, but she was too busy melting. Natasha had taken over all of her senses. She had not realized how much her body had longed for this. She had spent all day every day since the breakup thinking about being back with Natasha and somehow her imagination had come short on how it would feel. Every fiber of her being had longed for Natasha and here she was, and she felt whole again.

Natasha pulled away first. Her green eyes were full of tears. Natasha moved to push a piece of hair out of Wanda’s face. Wanda laughed a little, but it was a watery laugh. Wanda was crying too.

“I can’t believe you’re here,” said Natasha.

“Neither can I to be honest,” said Wanda.

“Does this mean you forgive me?” asked Natasha.

“Oh, Natasha, I can’t forgive you, you didn’t do anything wrong. Not really. You said words, but we were both at fault,” said Wanda. Natasha pressed her lips to Wanda’s again. This time the kiss was slow and tender.

“I love you, Wanda Maximoff,” said Natasha.

“I love you too,” said Wanda.

Wanda was laying in bed with Natasha. They were both fully clothed and Wanda had a mouthful of popcorn. They had been talking for hours about everything they should have said before and about their last week without the other, now they were binge watching a show on Natasha’s laptop. It was a really stupid show about time traveling misfits, but it was brainless and fun after their emotionally charged conversation.

“You should probably call your parents,” said Natasha.

“Oh yeah…,” said Wanda.

“I mean I love Magda, but I’m a bit afraid of her,” said Natasha.

“Yeah?” asked Wanda. Natasha held up hand and made the hand sign for a little. Her nose wrinkled in the most adorable way.

“Just a little,” said Natasha. Wanda poked Natasha on the nose. She picked up her phone and dialed her mother.

“Wanda Maximoff you are in so much trouble right now,” scolded Magda. There was no real bite in her voice.

“I’m sorry mom,” said Wanda.

“But you had to do it. I know Wands. I just wish you’d, I don’t know, not just run off like that in the middle of the night,” said Magda her voice was laced with concern. Magda sighed. “Wanda please just tell me when you’re coming home.”

“Sunday,” said Wanda.

“This convocation isn’t over. We’ll talk when you get home,” said Magda.

“I can live with that. Love you mom,” said Wanda.

“Love you too Wanda,” said Magda. Then she hung up the phone. Wanda was a little taken aback. She did not think that her mother would be so chill about the whole run away to try to get her girl back. But she was not going to question it.

“Did I overhear correctly? Do I get you all the way until Sunday?” asked Natasha.

“You get me forever,” said Wanda.

“That is so cheesy babe,” said Natasha. Wanda chose to respond to the dig with a kiss.

“Yeah, but you love how cheesy I am,” said Wanda.

“I do,” said Natasha.

The end! yay you did it!
