Summary
“Relax, man. Like this.”
Will hands him the ball and Lucas dribbles it slowly. He exaggerates so Will can get a good visual, each of his movements fluid and practiced. Will feels his face heat up when Lucas turns around to look at him.
“You think you got it?”
Will stammers a bit. “I guess I could try again.”

“Come on, Will,” Lucas says encouragingly. “Let’s see what you got.”
Will freezes in place. His muscles feel locked as he looks down, slowly, brows knitting together at the foreign item in his hands.
“Uh,” he mutters to himself. “I… I don’t…”
To his great relief, Lucas jogs over to him. Behind his dark eyes are patience and amusement. Happy things. Will feels some tension disappear knowing he’s not annoyed.“I could break the window.” Will points behind him.
“You’re not gonna break the window.”
They stare at each other. It’s a challenge that Will begrudgingly loses.
So, here he stands, readjusting his grip as he stares at the hoop.
“Uh, how do I,” he starts. “Am I holding it right? To shoot.”
“Oh, here.” Lucas walks over with a smile. He reaches over Will’s shoulders, chest pressed against Will’s back as he repositions him. Panic bells go off in Will’s mind, spreading a tingly kind of warmth across body as Lucas grabs his hands, shifting their place on the basketball. “Like that.”
Will swallows dryly. “Right.”
“Right.” Lucas lets go, taking a few steps back. “And now you just aim — “ He whistles, mimicking the motion of shooting the ball — “and let ‘er fly.”
“That’s it?”
Lucas nods nonchalantly. “Yeah. Not much to it, right?”
Will shrugs back, muttering, “Guess not.”“Touchdown?”
Lucas turns his head. His blank expression slowly morphs into a bright smile, and he runs over to clap Will on the back. “That’s what I’m talking about! How the hell did you do that?”
“I, well, I mean — I don’t know,” Will stammers.
Lucas is laughing. “I’m lucky you’re not on the team, man,” he says, “If Coach saw what I just did, I’d be a bench-warmer all semester.”
Will pushes him away before his blush becomes too noticeable. “Bull. You’re way better at this than I am.”
“But how could I ever compare to such raw, untapped talent?” Lucas’ voice drags with a bit of playful sarcasm, and Will rolls his eyes, holding in a laugh.
“All right, all right. Cut it out.” He takes a step back. “Now let's get out of here before we get caught.”
So they do. But Will would be lying if he said he didn’t feel his heart skip a couple of beats at the thought of them being on the same team. -
