Weddings are overrated

Summary:

Harvey has been living in Pelican town for a few years now, barely struggling to keep his Clinic running while having a... non-existent love life. When a new farmer moves into town he thinks he might've found the one but here he is, at her wedding, as alone as before.

It turns out that he isn't the only one alone that night and, in a strange turn of events, ends up befriending Shane of all people. Maybe what he was looking for was right in front of his nose.

Chapter Text

Harvey was beginning to think that Yorba had cursed him. Normally he wasn't so superstitious but as he stood there with a glass of wine in one hand looking out over the wedding party of Jillian and Penny, he wasn't about to rule it out. The whole town square was decorated with string lights and makeshift tables covered in white table cloths dotted the area outside the "dance floor," Gus even set up a temporary bar for the occasion, which Pam had already found.

He sighed and sipped his drink. Jill was still standing by the alter with Penny, talking and laughing with Sam. She would smile and flip her dark green hair over her shoulder and he'd be forced to look away. Before she moved into town he had had a somewhat persistent crush on Maru but he knew that was never going anywhere. She didn't like him like that.

Besides, once Jill moved into town all of his thoughts of Maru were abandoned. Jill was pretty, she was funny, she worked hard and she stood up for what she believed in. He had fallen for her, hard, and for awhile it seemed like the feeling may be mutual. She brought him coffee nearly every day and had seemed greatly amused, rather then disgusted, when she saw him working out with the other ladies in town at Pierre's.

Then one day it all stopped and he never knew what he did wrong. Was he too awkward? Should he have been more assertive and asked her out earlier? Would she have said yes? These were questions he'd never get the answer to. Harvey let out a heavy sigh and peeled his gaze away from the happy couple to focus on something else. Anything else.

His eyes landed on Sebastian and Pierre's daughter out on the dance floor, he was wearing his Flower festival suit and she was wearing a knee length purple dress with a blue jacket. She leaned in closer and kissed his cheek, he blushed, and Harvey looked away again. This time he settled on a cluster of tables more towards the back where a strange blue man stood with another man he had never seen before. The blue man was dressed in a hat and sunglasses, his glittering coat making him look like a disco ball.

The man next to him was more normal looking, with mussed brown hair and a tuxedo shirt. He whispered something to his companion? Friend? And he smirked. They leaned in closer together and he decided to look away one more time, only to see Lewis and Marnie sneaking off together hand in hand. She had flowers braided into her hair and was grinning wildly. He stared down at his wine. It seemed love truly was in the air tonight.

He took a big gulp, almost choking, and suddenly he wasn't alone. "You knocked that back faster then I can... never would've pegged you as the type doc."

It was Shane. He looked a little nicer tonight then he usually did, he had shaved and changed out of his Joja uniform to slacks and a button up. He was also carrying a wine glass but his was already empty.

"I'm not normally like this." He said, swirling the contents of his glass.

"I noticed."

An awkward silence fell over them as Harvey stared at his drink and Shane tried to think of what to say next. They didn't usually talk to each other so trying to find a topic to settle on was difficult.

"So." Shane attempted, knowing he'd already dug this hole, "What's wrong?"

Harvey blinked "I well." He gestured vaguely at the newly weds.

It took the other man a few minutes to realize what he meant and when the realization did hit he let out a low whistle. "The farmer, huh?"

Anger bubbled inside him. The farmer had a name! He almost snapped, but quickly caught himself. It wasn't his job to defend her. When he did respond all he said was "Yes."

"Makes sense." He shrugged and let out a quiet burp "She's a good person."

"Yeah..." Harvey spared her one more wistful glance "She is."

Another pause. This was like trying to talk to a wall. He should've stayed at the clinic. "Did you want something Shane?"

"Actually yeah.." He looked embarrassed. This was going to be a medical question wasn't it?

"Could I schedule an appointment? I think I might have hurt my wrist."

Harvey took a better look at his hands, which were resting on the table, and noticed that his left wrist seemed to be puffier then the other. Without thinking, he reached over so he could take a better look.

"Hey! What are you doing?" Shane suddenly snapped, pulling away with a visible wince of pain and putting his hands at his sides.

"It's clearly sprained. If you let me look at it now then I won't have to see it tomorrow."

Shane looked suspicious but held out his left hand anyway. He was incredibly careful as turned his hand over. It looked uncomfortable, and painful. There was also a sizeable bruise. He sighed and let it go. "Tonight when you get home put some ice on it. Drop by the clinic tomorrow and I can give you more information."

He was so busy with Shane that he didn't notice all of the women in Pelican town gathering to catch the bouquet, until it hit him right in the face and landed on the table in front of him. His glasses had fallen down with it and when he put them back on he immeadiately blushed and picked it up. "I guess I caught it...?" He announced meekly.

It was silent for 5 terrible seconds before everyone began to laugh and cheer. Some of the women in town were a little annoyed that they hadn't caught the bouquet, especially Hayley, but most seemed to think that it was the funniest thing they'd ever seen. He still had the colorful bouquet when he got home, tossing it on the table next to the instructions for his newest model airplane. He had lost track of Shane after the flowers hit him. He hoped he'd come in tomorrow, that wrist needed attention.
