    Six years after Ellie leaves the farm, she lives as a nomad around Jackson. She checks in occasionally, but can never bring herself to stick around for long. She is haunted by flashbacks and nightmares that only seem to worsen the longer she's alone. Sullen, angry, and scared, Ellie can't bring herself to return to Jackson or to leave Jackson - or Dina and JJ - behind. She takes bigger and bigger risks - she knows, a part of her hopes, that her luck will someday run out.
    Despite their strained, but generally friendly, relationship, Dina and Ellie have to work together after JJ is taken by a religious cult that worships the Cordyceps virus. They're forced to chase the cult across the states. Faith, hope, luck, and love all play a very big role in Ellie's last chance to redeem herself in her own eyes.
