Marlene: First was this goofy guy named Jake -- he always made me laugh.
Jake (thinking): Couldn't ever tip the dame off about all the other things I wanted to make with her . . .See, she already had a fellow -- and he wasn't me.
Marlene: There was Marc, the darker, no-nonsense type of lover . . .
Marc (thinking): She wouldn't really say nice things about me. she must be thinking of Steven. Steven's the man who can make her happy.
Marlene: My favorite was Steven. He's dreamy.
Steven (thinking): No, Marc, these are the nice things she says about me.
Marlene: And the fourth one . . . he was almost like a silver ghost.
Narration boxes: The fourth one isn't used to having feelings. But this feels . . . nice?
