Chapter Text
June 9th, Monday:
The students all arrived at the school entrance after being dropped off from both their parents and buses. US airmen at the gate stood guard with M4A1s as their Japanese counterparts rang the students through the security checkpoints. The students however, certainly did not expect four US Army Rangers standing by with their M4v1s.
Then again, after the Hiroshima Hostage Crisis last week, it wasn't a surprise for some who expect the school's increased security. Some of the students murmured in Japanese as Damion and Fireteam Foxtrot stood ready. With their helmets and full combat gear, they stood out amongst security.
"Nice of the Captain to spare us some Resonators," Jenson muttered as he inspected the device on his muzzle. "At least with this increased firepower, we could catch those Hydra goons off guard."
"Or just about any enemy in the country right now," Schwartz added, "and just as if not more effective than those 6.8s we just traded in."
"That's true.." Jenson agreed. "Although, I could see myself with the P418 at the moment."
Damion however, paid not heed. His eyes were sharp out for Kazuto and Asuna, and a certain Japanese blonde.
Meanwhile, Alex spotted them from further away as he was checked in by security.
"Burke's troops..." He sighed, he knew that he would have to apologize to them as well as Captain Burke himself. He was pretty certain that they were Damion and his friends.
"Alex-kun?" A voice broke from his thoughts. He turned to see Suguha standing with both Kazuto, Asuna, and Kotone.
Kazuto and Asuna saw the Rangers standing off to the side of the security checkpoints.
"I hope that's Damion amongst the Rangers..." Kotone whispered.
"He should be, Kotone." Asuna replied. During the weekend, she was receiving text messages from Kotone about Damion. "Kind of hard to tell, with the helmets on."
"I'm sure he's there..." Kazuto reassured her. "It depends if he recognizes you."
Kotone nodded before one of the Howler Rangers gave her a wave and a thumbs up. She smiled and waved back towards the Ranger. "I guess he is here..."
"And here they come," Alex muttered as the soldiers moved towards them.
"Remember, I'm here to support you." Suguha reminded with a small smile.
"I know," Alex smiled. It had been a rough weekend for him. He finally gotten his phone and AmuSphere back the previous night. However, after Alex promised he'll apologize to Captain Burke and his soldiers at the school.
Despite his punishment, Suguha stayed with him and helped out with the Mitchells during the whole weekend in any way she could.
"Kazuto Kirigaya," Damion addressed.
Kazuto snapped into attention and greeted Damion. "Morning, Specialist Burton."
Asuna and the others greeted him in return. Alex took a deep breath before turning to Damion. "Is Captain Burke in today?" He asked.
"Earlier than all of you," Jenson jested. "You need to speak with him or something?"
"Well," Alex sighed, "I owe all of you an apology."
Jenson raised an eyebrow under his helmet. "An apology?"
"Just listen to him," Suguha smiled.
"I was out of my depth when I challenged you last week." Alex continued. "And I should've kept quiet while you carried out your orders.... and I misused my dad's authority as leverage."
"Same goes for me as well..." Suguha added.
"Sugu," Kazuto shook his head, "you didn't-"
But Suguha continued. "If I had known that someone would get in trouble for challenging the military, whether or not it was intended, I would have said something to calm Alex down."
"Therefore, we apologize to you and the Howlers for causing trouble last week."
"We were just following orders," Wang simply stated.
It was then Damion replied to Alex. "And there's one more thing..."
Alex felt sudden dread upon hearing this. However, to his surprise, Damion approached him and lifted up the visor over his forehead; revealing the green eyes and young face behind the helmet.
"I apologize for what happened as well..." Damion said at last. "I might have been quite unreasonable myself. I've failed to take account on what you two went through along with Kazuto and Asuna." He gestures towards the married couple before continuing. "I should've reasoned with you at a normal level that would give your mind and heart at ease.."
"... but you were following orders as the rest of us were," Wang argued with Damion.
"Not now, Wang." Jenson whispered.
Wang grit teeth and looked away.
Damion continued. "And because of that mistake, an incident was occurred that involved several military superiors to question the matter..."
Suguha pouted. 'What stuck-ups,' she thought to herself.
"With that being said, it's best that we don't repeat this incident again..." Damion said. "... Captain America does not need any more trouble than he already has to manage."
"I understand, Dami- I mean, Specialist Burton.." Alex nodded sheepishly.
"Thank you, Alex. And call me Damion whenever I show this side of me..." Damion smiled.
"Understood... Damion..." Alex replied. Suguha held Alex's hand in reassurance.
Damion then turned back to Kazuto and Asuna. "Captain Burke told me to tell you both that you will be expected to an appointment in the superintendent's office for a confidential matter at 1230 hours."
"We'll be there..." Asuna acknowledged.
"Good.." Damion nodded. "Now, I'll relay the message to the Captain..." He turned to Alex and Suguha. "Unless you two want to apologize to him in person..."
"We will," Alex affirmed.
"Good.." Damion nodded before placing this visor back on and turning towards the entrance. "Now if you two just follow me, I'll take you both to him..."
"Jenson, Schwartz, Wang," Damion said, "maintain security oversight."
"You got it, sir." Jenson acknowledged with a salute as Damion escorted Alex and Suguha into the school.
"Damion!" Kotone ran after Damion as he took Alex and Suguha away, leaving Kazuto and Asuna with his squad mates.
The Specialist quickly turned towards the blonde Japanese girl. "Yes, Kotone?"
Kotone approached him as she asks. "Are you, by any chance, available next weekend?"
Damion gave a grin. "I might be available to talk during lunch."
Kotone smiled. "That's good to hear."
"Let me take care of Alex and Suguha here first," Damion nodded.
"Okay, you'll do that..* Kotone nodded before returning to Kazuto and Asuna.
The three teens watched as Damion led them through security before disappearing into the school.
"At least that's been taken care of..." Asuna whispered to her husband.
"Yeah, I hope. Sounded pretty bad," Kazuto whispered back. "But at least Kotone may have gotten a second date with Damion..."
With Captain Burke:
"I see..." Chris remarked as both Alex and Suguha are present before him. He laid a hand on his desk as he was standing. Alex could glance that Chris had a file on him.
"It is a bit late, but I appreciate your sincerity, Alex Mitchell. And now, you've learned what the consequences would have been whenever someone attempts to challenge any soldiers."
"Especially those under my charge and my orders," Chris emphasized.
"Yes sir.." Alex nodded. "And it was wrong for me to challenge one of the heroes of the Second Civil War." He added shamefully.
"Actually," Captain America II replied, "I can handle any challenge to my orders, but it was mostly how you did it that made a lot of my superiors displeased."
"I understand, sir..." Alex said.
"And you probably knew that Jonathan would not approve either," Chris suddenly said.
Alex nodded silently, that was a painful memory for him to bear. Seeing his own brother angry and disapproving the stunt he pulled last week.
"Your dad and big brother have high hopes I know," Chris said with his crystal blue eyes boring into Alex's, "but you owe it most to yourself and your own honor to not do foolish things. Especially after you, Kazuto, and your friends staged a rescue operation back in January.."
Alex clenched his fists. "But sir, that was-"
"I know, you and your friends did it on your own accord." Chris replied, cutting Alex off. "And half of us thank you for it. But that will not always work for you in all circumstances, especially as it relates to authority, so don't let it become a habit."
"I won't, sir.." Alex promised. His fingers released from his clenched fists and relaxed.
"Anyhow," Chris finished, "I am glad that you chose to admit your wrongdoing. You should get going to your class before the first bell."
He turned to Suguha. "And same for you, Miss Kirigaya. While it wasn't necessary, I'm glad that you admitted your wrongdoing. You may not trust the American government entirely, but you can trust me."
Suguha, while unsure what to think of the situation, just bowed. "Yes, Burke-taichou."
Chris then looked to his clock. "You two made good time... now you have five minutes before the bell."
The two teens thanked Chris before leaving to get to their classes. With that, Chris was left alone with his file on Alex.
'He's got a lot to learn..' He thought as he sat back down in his chair. 'But he has that same fire in him as Jonathan...'
His thoughts was interrupted when a knock on the door was heard. He tapped into his intercom screen to see who it was.
"Corporal McNeil from Zama base." The young officer saluted. "I've gotten new orders to be delivered to you, sir."
Chris rose from his seat and walked over to the door. He opened it to look upon the corporal. In his hand, he presented a vanilla envelope with the military seal stamped at the center. Chris thanked the corporal before taking the envelope and opened it.
"Special orders... From the embassy?" Captain America II was struck by the forwarding of some newly minted orders to him.
"Yes sir, they're instructed specially for you." The corporal nodded.
"Thank you, you may leave," Chris said, allowing the corporal to leave. He then read the details. Chris could not believe what he was reading... the embassy wanted him personally attending a morale rally on Okinawa. While the threat of Hydra and other terrorist factions are still present, many people continued to oppose the American armed forces, seeing them as an occupation force.
Furthermore, the trauma of the Hiroshima battle was fresh on many people's minds, with Korea taking a huge umbrage over being dragged into the crisis.
As he continued reading the orders, there was another problem. The New Knights of America are rumored to be active in Japan. He frowned... these were renegade soldiers.
"Great, just what we needed right now.." Chris muttered. What was worse was that Chris knew many of these men from the service. Both from the US Armed Forces and the Free States Rangers.
However, more relevant in the short-term was that Ambassador Marx wanted him to meet with the surviving passengers that he had rescued, along with officials from the Japanese and Korean governments as part of a public relations attempt to improve perceptions of the war effort.
In short; it's reassurance to the passengers and collaborating with government officials of dealing with future threats. And it's a positive aspect, specially since a few government officials in South Korea had been leaning towards China since the Second Korean War.
However, for Chris, asking him to be part of such diplomatic and PR events was a bit much. Even as Captain America II, he was not exactly the kind of personality for the cameras.
"If I have to do it, then I shall..." Chris muttered. He had little choice, as he was the personified symbol of his country. Now, he has to check the time to see when he's due to meet them.
Yokosuka:
Jonathan Mitchell sat in the barracks. While he had been given weekend leave, it had not been such a good one. For one, he had to stay at the base talking to Captain Burke over Alex's actions last week.
(Flashback)
"I'm really sorry, Captain," Jonathan frowned as he struggled to look the stern older brother of his late friend in the crystal blue eyes. Chris had a very imposing presence despite his being Taylor's twin. "Alex would never pull a stunt like this, he knows better..."
"Evidently not," Chris said rather bluntly without showing anger. "I specifically received orders to have my men to only retrieve Miss Suguha Kirigaya.... and your headstrong little brother intimidated my young soldiers with your dad's authority."
Jon remained silent, he knew that Alex was taught to never abuse authority like this.
"I convinced my command in my report to not punish Alex in exchange for Captain Mitchell carrying out the task," Captain Burke added, "and it was only because I was Captain America that they gave deference to my recommendation, reluctantly as I would add."
"Your little brother had been one bad word away from being hauled up before a tribunal. That is something not worth having the Mitchell family name tarnished..."
"I know..." Jonathan sighed. He then glanced over towards several warships in their docks briefly before looking at Chris again, "but why?"
"Why I made the recommendation?" Chris deduced the question. Then, he answered for him. "Because your family was friends with Taylor in the past.."
Jonathan shook his head. "Captain Burke, I know you better than that. You would never compromise principle, even for family. You don't need to flatter me or Dad."
Chris made a slight smile before resuming his stoic professionalism. "Mostly because Alex needed to learn his lesson once. The next time he is punished, it will be the full weight of the law."
Jonathan sighed before replying. "Dad and I will make sure he's grounded and remind him of the consequences for his actions..."
"That would be appropriate," Chris replied. "We had high hopes for him. Especially after the whole ALO affair..." He continued. "This stunt however, proves that he is not ready to take on the tasks..."
"Tasks?" Jonathan suddenly felt a pit in his stomach.
"Yes, tasks..." Chris nodded.
"But... why?" Jonathan was confused.
Chris looked around, and seeing that there were a lot of people around, he wanted to talk about this more privately. "Can we go somewhere quieter?"
Jonathan silently nodded, unsure where this conversation's going.
"I also told your dad that I needed to speak with him as well."
"I see...." Jonathan felt a pit in his stomach growing. What tasks is Chris talking about?
"Captain Mitchell's personal quarters," Chris suggested, though his tone seemed more of a command. Without a word, Jonathan followed Chris down the corridor to the personal quarters of Captain David Mitchell.
Chris knocked on the door.
"Who is it?" A voice asked from the other side.
"Captain Christopher Burke." Chris replied. "US Army. I need to speak with you on authorization from Colonel Steve Rogers."
"Come in.."
Chris opened the door and both he and Jonathan entered inside. Chris was the first to salute the older Mitchell as his military paygrade was equal to Colonel Rogers'.
"At ease.." David replied after exchanging salutes.
"Captain Mitchell, Lieutenant Mitchell," Chris said, "I have business here concerning your kin, Alex Mitchell."
"Go ahead..." Captain Mitchell replied. "And I would also like to express my remorse over what happened with Alex's interactions with your men."
"That is already dealt with," Chris held his hand up, "but thank you."
"I would also like to know," Jonathan admitted anxiously.
Chris was straight to the point. "Your son, sir. He has metahuman powers and abilities."
"The ability to manipulate and control fire.." David nodded. "We know that.."
Jonathan however was taken aback. He still remembered how Alex helped out with the firepit back in January.
"And you're very aware that both Kazuto and Asuna displayed metahuman powers as well." Chris continued.
"Of course," Captain Mitchell acknowledged.
"Well... Their actions in both January and June have attracted the attention of my superiors." Chris added. "And you should both know that in the case of Alex, he has been given the Ramford-Schully Physiology Test by our military doctors as the SAO/ALO Survivor School as legally required under the U.S. Biological Mapping Act of 2024."
Jonathan stiffened at the mention of the law back in the American homeland. He then wondered if something like that would happen here in Japan. He dreaded that law... it felt like a post-war intrusion into the lives of many Americans.
"However, while that law only applies for Americans." Chris continued, "It's no doubt that after previous events, They'll be an acceptation for everyone attending the school."
"Of course," Captain Mitchell sighed. Of course the school would do it, given that the American half of its civilian and military administration are obliged by law to give the census to even foreign nationals attending.
"And there's one more thing..." Chris added.
"Not sure if I want to hear it," Jonathan muttered, which earned his a quick glare from his dad.
"The Avengers Initiative 2.0 has been activated..." Chris revealed. "And the President has also authorized provisional use of the Selective Service for all US citizens of age in Japan."
Chris then added. "...and with Alex having super powers, it's important that he's disciplined to prevent any future troubles.."
"Hold on, Chris," Jonathan wanted to protest.
"Sorry, Lieutenant Mitchell," Chris cut him off, "While he's seventeen now, he'll be eighteen. He'll receive training at the school on combat alongside with Kazuto and Asuna..." He continued.
Jonathan clenched a fist. He doesn't know who he should direct his anger at for this mess, Alex or the system. He and his family moved out to Japan to avoid mainland American politics. And now, after the Civil War and ALO, the war against Hydra continues and shows no end. He now had a new dread... that his younger brother would indeed be selected to serve.
"I know that this is a lot for both of you to take in at once." Chris then said. "However, should that happen, I will personally recommend him for service in the Rangers, given his excellent physical aptitude results-"
"Chris, don't," Jonathan cut him off, "this is too soon for that talk."
"Jon... Please..." David then said, trying to calm him down.
"No, Dad. We only had Alex back after months of SAO." Jonathan argued.
"We'll take good care of Alex should we require his service," Chris tried to reassure.
"No you won't," Jonathan shot back.
Chris kept his decorum, but said, "I'm sorry?"
"For two years, we feared and worried that Alex would be killed in that death game." Jonathan continued. "And now I hear the Army is about to implement Selective Service?"
Chris remained respectfully silent as Jonathan continued. "You think I don't know how this ends?"
"I understand your concern, Jonathan," Chris expressed, "it's natural to be concerned for your little brother. I'm breaking this to you so that you know what to expect from the higher ups in Washington. With the threats from Hydra remnants and other factions. We need to prepare for a chance to push them back."
Jonathan was about to argue again. But David spoke up. "Jon... Please..."
"I'm sorry Jonathan," Chris said, "but your little brother will soon eligible for Selective Service once he turns eighteen next year. And from what I know, his probability of selection is high."
Jonathan opened his mouth to continue the argument, but he bit his lower lip as he couldn't find any of the words. It was pointless to argue with Captain America over matters decided by people much higher than them.
"We understand, captain." David said.
"Thank you for doing so, Captain Mitchell," Chris said, "and before I finish here, SOCOM also has new orders concerning both my platoon and Lieutenant Mitchell's SEAL Team 7."
"Thank you, Captain Burke," David acknowledged with a nod. "I will review the orders at my earliest convenience."
"Actually, now," Chris said, and as if right on cue, there was a new email on Captain Mitchell's work computer. Even Jonathan's government phone buzzed.
"Understood, Captain..." David replied as he checks the computer's email inbox. It was from General Burke back in McDill...
Both David and Jonathan opened them. Jonathan had a double-take. SEAL Team 7 was to be reassigned from the US Pacific Fleet. He knew that they're the best of the best the US Navy has to offer. It was now to be embedded with Howler Platoon of the 3rd Ranger Battalion to provide asymmetric warfare support.
He also checked the email to see if any other special forces are reassigned as well. None... at least what he could see. Jonathan guessed that this was addressed specifically to him and his command. It'll have to do for a time being. Still, it was a whirlwind of events now culminating in working with the twin of his late best friend.
(Flashback ends)
Jonathan sighed as his mind finished processing the weekend's events. After returning from base, he ended up lashing out on his little brother. Mainly for invoking their father's rank to Captain Burke's soldiers. But he never mentioned the Selective Service to him.
He felt it was no necessary to burden Alex with such knowledge yet. Especially after he was guilt-ridden for his actions. And now, he was being ordered to lead SEAL Team 7's detachment as embedded support for the Rangers in their land war against Hydra and other insurgencies.
"There's just no end to this..." Jonathan muttered bitterly. The war was continuing to escalate, and it was a wonder that most of Japan's major cities have not seen any major outbreak of fighting or violence as of yet. And worse still, several towns and cities continued protesting against the presence of US military forces. For all the successes the 3rd Ranger Battalion achieved in the field, the military's PR was a massive mess.
The attack on the Yokota Air Base also left scars on both American servicemen and Japanese citizens. And the reconstruction of the base is taking its time. He could only wish Taylor was here to alleviate the stress, and the tensions he had with Chris.
"Something wrong?" A voice asked. Jonathan turned to see another sailor, part of the Navy SEALs no doubt. He was around his age and sported short black hair and fair skin. "You've been sitting there for an hour."
"I'm sorry.." Jonathan shook his head. "It's just... Everything's happening at once..."
"Like how we are going to be playing fiddle for the Army?"
"Yes..." Jonathan nodded before he rubbed his eyes. "After six months, we have yet to achieve significant progress against Hydra. And on top of that, new insurrection factions have emerged to present further challenges."
"I was suppose to have a relaxing weekend to get some rest from this chaos.." Jon shook his head. "But family matters made things complicated for me..."
"Mind if I ask what happened?" The subordinate asked before pulling up the chair in front of Jon and sat down.
Jon paused for a moment before sighing. Then he told him the events that transpired last week. The sailor remained silent as he listened to Jon's situation.
"Damn..." the sailor let out, "your brother really almost got it from the Army."
"Tell me about it..." Jon groaned as he finished. "I know he means well and he knew better than to do that.. I'm not sure whether to like or dislike Burke right now..."
The subordinate pondered Jon's words.
"... but it's hard to disagree with him when he's right."
"That's understandable..." The sailor surmises. "They say he's as sharp as his old man, Old Sam."
Jon nodded before replying. "...And that's was before he signed up to the super-soldier experiment."
"You sure he's really Taylor's twin?" the other SEAL jokingly asked, "he's much too serious to be one."
"He is Taylor's twin." Jonathan replied. "While he doesn't have the same personality, but he's a Burke. And certainly not one you want as your enemy, Marcus."
"I see..." Marcus pondered at the response. "Well, my father always told me to not to get on people's bad sides. Even if they're on the same side."
"Yeah... the same side on the verge of drafting high schoolers," Jonathan sighed.
Marcus shook his head. "You'd better not let the Army officers hear that. Trust me, you don't want to square off with them for that remark."
"I know..." Jonathan said. In the old rivalry between two of America's oldest military branches, there was always that underlying tension in seniority and authority between their officer corps.
"If anything, we should be grateful for Captain America's recommendation for embedding us into his unit," Marcus added, "it would be a huge honor to serve with him."
"Yeah, it is..." Jon agreed. Though, his heart wasn't in it. He was not particularly happy with Chris Burke and his command at the moment. It felt like the US Army was using him and Alex to flex their strength and authority in the Japanese theater of operations. If anything, he wished that things have gone back to normal without Hydra looming in the shadows.
'Maybe if I fight well enough... Alex will not need to serve. And sooner we find the remaining Hydra strongholds, the better...'
SAO/ALO Survivor School:
Chris Burke was preparing a lesson for the upcoming PT class when he was hailed on the desk phone. He narrowed his gaze, as he felt that it was about what was talked about over the weekend. He walked over and tapped on the device. "Captain Burke here."
"Captain, we have liaisons from the Japanese MoD who are requesting to meet you in Administration."
"Alright then, I'll be there shortly." Captain Burke acknowledged before hanging up. Taking his patrol cap and clipboard, Chris walked out of his office. He made his way through the hallways of the school. All of which are emptied after class hours begun. There were still a few guards who rendered the customs and courtesies to the young officer as he passed.
A couple of minutes have gone by before the Captain made it to his destination. He could see three Japanese in uniform, one being an officer with the rank of major, and two corporals. And they're accompanied by a few American officers.
"Gentlemen," Chris saluted upon seeing that they were superiors.
"Captain Burke." One of the superiors said as they exchanged salutes in return. Chris could see that the two American officers were a major and a lieutenant colonel, likely liaisons from Okinawa HQ.
"At ease..." The lieutenant colonel said.
"Yes sir," Chris said, "I have them here. The gym class is in the next hour. You'll be able to observe their activities as the class commences."
"Don't forget their appointment afterwards, Captain," the major reminded, "our counterparts here from the Ministry of Defense have come to an agreement on our two subjects with the appropriate papers in hand. We want no delays."
"Don't worry, sir. There won't be any delays." Chris nodded. The Japanese major frowned slightly, but quickly hid it under his work demeanor. Chris noticed this, but decided to let it slide as he continued.
"Major Ushio," he addressed the Japanese, "thank you for coming, sir."
"It is very important for our two subjects." Major Ushio remarked. "After all, they will be two of our nation's biggest assets and contributions to our joint military efforts."
"This also included their friends." the lieutenant colonel added.
However, Ushio replied, "we only agreed to those two, remember?"
The lieutenant colonel nodded. "Yes, we have..."
"You may be a superpower nation, but this is still our country and our rules," Ushio made clear, "we only agreed because we have an insurgency on our soil."
The American liaisons frowned, with the American major responding, "and don't forget that it's our troops killing and being killed out there. Not to mention that most of the students here in the school are meta-humans."
Captain America II's sharp mind sensed the tension, and he decided to quickly defuse it. He urged over a female soldier. "Private, could you help these gentlemen to something to drink and eat?"
"Sure thing, Captain." The female soldier nodded before turning away to fetch refreshments.
"Now gentlemen, we still have an hour before I can start my lesson," Chris said, "why don't we take this time to refresh and go over final details?"
The officers remained silent before one of them responded. "Very well, then..."
Chris nodded silently, crisis averted. A few moments later, the private returned with refreshments. It was green tea for Ushio and his corporals, while the two American officers got coffee.
"The food will be brought up shortly.." The female private explained after giving out drinks.
"Thank you very much, Private Mason," Chris nodded with a slight charm and smile. Concealing her blush at being acknowledged by the Captain, the private walked away.
"Captain America," the American major said with a tone of impatience, "we came all this way from Okinawa to see both Mr. and Mrs. Kirigaya immediately inducted in JATUSA without delay. This is hardly necessary."
"With all due respect, Major," Chris kept a composed tone to hide his annoyance, "in Japan, it is considered unsavory to turn down what they call omotenashi, or hospitality. I already arranged their appointments in the form of physicals after the upcoming class so as not to stir up the student body."
"And they've kept their word in compliance with us." Chris continued.
"Captain America," the lieutenant colonel addressed, "you should know that the White House and Pentagon are expecting much of you given this state of affairs we find ourselves in. This lack of movement towards the elimination of Hydra has displeased many back at Kadena and in the homeland."
"I'm aware of that, Colonel..." Chris acknowledged. "And we're doing the best we can to keep up with the demands and train them."
Major Ushio then added. "And don't forget that they have meta capabilities. So it's best to train them on how to use them properly without risks of casualties."
"The last thing my government needs is to have an Inhuman reckless incident." Chris frowned slightly to himself at Ushio's phrasing.
"Which lead to many people distrusting Inhumans in the first place." Ushio finished.
"Was... there a major incident in Japan lately?" Chris inquired.
Ushio paused for a moment before answering. "Well... No, but I'm referring to cities around the world... You should know that my government does pay attention to world events despite our neutrality. And our nation withdrew from the Sokovia Accords when we learned of its flaws one year before your nation underwent its Second Civil War..."
Chris digested this. Apparently while not that caring about meta-humans, Japan wanted its neutrality. A part of him resented that. He also knew that Japan housed much of the US Pacific fleet when they defied the authority of Pacifica.
"As a result, Japan successfully navigated the turmoil that affected many regions globally following the collapse of the United Nations," Ushio elaborated. "Additionally, contributed to the reconstruction efforts in Hawaii following the significant devastation caused by the Pacifica fire bombing the entire islands."
"We get that," Ushio's American counterpart brushed it off.
Moments later, the private returned with rice balls and butter scones.
"Right now, the issue is whether these subjects can be properly integrated into our war effort and not be a hindrance to the joint military order of battle that we have so delicately formed."
"I can assure all of you," Captain America II interceded. "They will receive comprehensive information and training."
"I will personally see to their training as soldiers." Captain America II then continued. "And once the other students reach to an appropriate age given how their meta powers develop. They'll receive training as well..."
Deep down however, Chris hated that... and hoped that Kazuto and Asuna alone would be enough to win. But he knew it was gonna take more to convince his superiors. Nevertheless, he remains resolute in his commitment to proceed with the recruitment for the new Avengers as planned.
"Nick Fury has entrusted me with the responsibility of leading the new Avengers." Chris added. "I especially assure my Japanese counterparts that with both Howler Platoon and the Avengers, I will crush any insurgency that we can get our hands on."
Silence filled the room as both the American and Japanese officers processed Chris' statement.
"You make huge promises, Captain America," Ushio replied. "And we hope that you keep them."
"Colonel Rogers has faith in the new Captain," the American lieutenant colonel said, "much is expected of him." He turned to Captain America II. "We'll vouch for the new Avengers program once both Mr. And Mrs. Kirigaya join up."
Washington DC:
President Wilson overlooked the reports that were brought in by OSS. The fallout of the Hiroshima Hostage Crisis significantly impacted public perception, as the aftermath of the ALO incident has created opportunities for various militia factions to contest the US military presence in Japan.
"There's no end to the Japanese campaign..." Wilson muttered to himself. It was six months into his presidency, and already he was facing scrutiny for a foreign war. Despite efforts to reassure the public that the US Armed Forces taking measures to stamp out the Hydra remnants, it wasn't enough.
However, on one positive aspect is that the Avengers Initiative 2.0 has been activated. For the first time in nine years, the Avengers will one day be reunited under new members. And both Kazuto and Asuna Kirigaya have been issued into the new Avengers. Furthermore, with the cooperation of the Japanese government, they would be given official status under the new Japanese Augmentation to the United States Army.
"Some good news indeed..." Wilson muttered before he then checks on the prisoners of those involved the ALO incident. Particularly three individuals. Fuji Yamane, Yuki Tsutano, and George Connelly. It had turned out that many former American personnel who had gone AWOL had ended up with RECT Inc.
Despite this fact, the majority of them supported Asuna in her efforts to devise a strategy against Nobuyuki and Hydra, thereby effectively undermining their ambitions for global dominance. However, it also led to frustrations with the Yuuki family, who clashed with the military justice system over the treatment of these POWs.
Wilson understood their perspective after reviewing the report, which indicated their support for the Yuuki individual, despite the awareness that they could face legal consequences for their actions during the Civil War.
Yet, he also needed the support of the many military officers who demanded justice. For a period, he arranged for Asuna's associates to be held in military prisons under solitary confinement to ensure the stability of their circumstances. Furthermore, their isolation on Okinawa kept them far from the fighting. For President Wilson, this was a minimal yet meaningful gesture on his part.
Still, with amnesty advocates and family members hounding the White House, he knew that he could not ignore the issue forever.
"It's only a matter of time..." Wilson muttered. If political pressure continued to build, both the White House and Pentagon would have to resolve the issue of these former defectors. It'll be out of his hands to spare them.
He rubbed his head. Wilson hardly had much sleep. He took whatever he could to keep himself awake during the Hydra Crisis in Japan, such as coffee. And took short hours of sleep every chance he got.
Still, he probably should turn in for the night before Mrs. Wilson came looking for him again... He closes the report and places it back to the dossier before standing up.
"It's up to you, Captain America." Wilson stifled a yawn before turning to face the doors and departing the Oval Office.
Back in Japan:
"This way, sirs," Damion said as he and Jenson escorted the American and Japanese HQ liaisons, "the Captain has already started his class."
The liaisons proceeded through the school corridors with a composed demeanor, maintaining a respectful silence. Damion was aware that the military leaders would be evaluating Kazuto, Asuna, and their associates. Although he maintains optimistic expectations for the survivors of SAO and ALO, the liaisons present a distinct consideration, as they will evaluate these individuals based on their performance.
Still, part of it felt wrong that people younger than him and Fireteam Foxtrot were being made to fight.
'What have this world come to?' Damion mentally asked himself. In the short time since he had been a Ranger, he had seen a lot. Notwithstanding this, he demonstrated commendable proficiency in his skills during his military assignment in Japan.
Still, it was no easy gaining recommendations and trust in a unit as vaunted as the 7th Platoon.
At last, they arrived at their destination. Damion could not help but be amused by what he was seeing. There, outside in the field, Kazuto, Asuna, and everyone from both SAO and ALO all lined up in formation.
What was noticeable was the look of dread on many... and it was not because the Captain. No... it was because of the drill sergeants whom he had called in, many of whom were either his old sergeants or even graduates of his Alma Mater, TMLA.
Kazuto and Asuna however, don't seemed worried.
Captain Burke spoke up. "Alright boys and girls. I have been informed that some of you have made notable progress..."
"And being that I was the one to teach all of you," Chris went on, "you boys and girls have exceeded my initial expectations."
Everyone kept their composer and remained silent as Chris continued. "However... it is at this time that I must announce a change. As you may have noticed, I've invited several drill sergeants here at the school to oversee and train all of you.... and I assure all of you that they are the best of the best from my old academy and from throughout my years of service to my country."
Chris paused before he continued. "These men... and women will be your instructors for the next and more stringent parts of your PT. I expect that each of you will demonstrate your utmost capabilities and reveal strengths that may not be immediately evident."
"However, be ready for these drill sergeants to also rip into you and expose your weaknesses before they build you back up again. Some of you would consider me as a saint in comparison."
Alex had to keep himself from laughing nervously. The last thing he required was to attract any undesired attention, not only from Captain Burke but also from the other drill sergeants.
"So with that, I will let these gentlemen take charge. Godspeed to all."
It was then, one of the sergeants stepped forward. "Alright you maggots! Consider this as your first lesson with me!"
"My name is Gunnery Sergeant Butch Hartman! Buy you can only address me as Sergeant Hartman! And you will speak only when spoken to, and the first and last words out of your filthy traps will be "Sir". Do you maggots understand that!?"
"Yes sir!" The students yelled out.
"I can't hear you! Sound off like you mean it!"
Kazuto had to gasp quickly to not hurt his throat.
"Sir yes sir!!"
"Still not loud enough, work harder!" Hartman barked.
"SIR YES SIR!!!"
"Better!"
"SIR YES SIR!!!"
Alex's throat felt raw. With a crisp salute, Chris gave the noncommissioned officers his blessings to proceed.
"That's more like it!" Hartman was pleased.
'You kids had better pay attention,' Chris thought to himself, 'what I gave all of you was orientation.'
Chris watched as Hartman ordered the students to do push-ups. Kazuto, Asuna, Suguha, and Alex managed to keep up. However, Hartman and the other drill sergeants were not fooling around; if anything, they were even more pushy than the Captain.
'And I thought Captain America was bad.' Scott thought as he strained with the push-ups.
Unfortunately, one of the younger drill sergeants spotted him and decided to give him 'encouragement'. "What in blazes are you shaking for!? You scared or something kid!?"
"No sir!" Scott replied.
"Then toughen up and show me what Captain Burke taught you!"
"Yes sir!" Scott resumed the push-ups. He'd been doing the PT for a month, but felt like years. It was then that a female drill instructor was picking on Rika and a few of the other girls.
"Is that the best you girls can do!?" She barked. "Even my grandmother can exercise better than you! And she's in a wheelchair!"
Rika grit her teeth, especially as some made the mistake of groaning audibly.
Kotone's thoughts moved to Damion for a moment before she continued.
"What was that I heard!?" The female drill sergeant with the rounded ponytail was quickly on Nijika. "Do I hear someone whining already!? Grandma and I hate whiners!"
Nijika sweated. "N-No ma'am!"
"Then zip it and get down to it!"
"Yes, ma'am!" Nijika sweat hard as she fought the strain.
"I know you can do better than that!!" She roared.
Another instructor came over to Alex, who continued the push-ups with east. "You seem to be rather smug, kid!"
"No sir! Just doing the best I can!" Alex replied as he strained with the push-ups with little effort.
"Then get to it!"
"Yes sir!" Alex resumed the push-ups as the instructor moved to Tim.
"Rather small and spry there, kid!"
"N-No sir!" Tim strained.
"Nonsense! I see a string bean of a boy trying to push himself up with two chopsticks!" The instructor barked.
Something in Tim felt indignation... after months of hard work and trying to pass the class. He pushes himself harder to keep up, sweat was beginning to drip from his forehead.
"Now beef up those guns and show me some real muscle power!"
"Y-Yes sir!" Tim strained for a moment before getting three push-ups in under five seconds.
Another female sergeant meanwhile drilled into Asuna. "I don't see you sweating, rich girl," she bit with a noticeable American Southern accent, "my old woman can sweat hard and work hard looking better than you!"
"Yes ma'am!" Asuna replied before pulling off ten push-ups in under eight seconds.
"I don't see it yet! Harder!"
Asuna persisted in her efforts, completing a total of thirty push-ups. She kept a grin to herself.
"You can do more than than, girly!" The female sergeant barked.
That caused Asuna to flinch a little; no one had called her that before.
"Put those muscles into good use!" The sergeant continued. "I can't see you sweat yet!"
Asuna pushed herself beyond thirty push-ups. At last, she felt sweat beading from her forehead.
"That's what I want to see, rich girl!" The female sergeant barked.
Kazuto grit his teeth, hearing that Southerner pick on his wife. But there's nothing he could do as Sergeant Hartman is barking orders at him.
"Don't you go staring at the ladies! Keep your attention to your push-ups! I wanna see some sweat, young man!!" He barked.
"Yes sir," Kazuto said as he refocused.
Chris continued to watch as the drill sergeants went about the lines. Several of students managed to keep pace while others strained. It became clear to many that as strict and harsh Captain Burke's regime was, it was a preview compared to what these hardened NCOs were putting them through.
'They've gotten through with my training before...' Chris thought to himself, '....And they'll get through this...'
He turned towards the liaisons he had Damion and Jenson shadow for a while. All of them attentively observe the students in quiet contemplation. "Gentlemen," Chris addressed, "you are just in time."
"Indeed, it is evident that the students are approaching their training with a commendable level of seriousness," Major Ushio stated. Of course, it is those two we are here for."
Chris was aware that his reference pertained to Kazuto and Asuna. "They have been very promising as you can see," Chris replied, "their superhuman potential has accelerated since we first tested them."
"As you can observe, their strength and stamina have shown noticeable improvement over the past few months," he continued. "The training has positively enhanced both of these attributes."
"And what of their powers themselves?" The American lieutenant colonel asked, "I have not heard of anything specific on those."
"They have effectively maintained oversight of their metahuman abilities." Chris stated, "They both recognize the potential risks associated with their use if not exercised with proper discipline."
"But of course they have yet to receive actual combat training," the lieutenant colonel had a somewhat critical edge in his voice.
"Sir," Chris assured, "they survived over two years of a literal death game, and brought down Hydra's supreme commander. Not to mentioned they fended off Hydra's attack at the Yokota Air Base.."
"You don't need to remind us, Captain," the American major said, not all that amused.
"I understand.." Chris acknowledged. It was an episode that the US Army would sooner move on from.
"Anyway..." Chris continued, "we've been monitoring the other students for any signs of metahuman powers.."
"Our agreement is only for both Kirigayas," Ushio interjected, "please stop right there."
"And so you have..." Chris nodded and stood by. The issue of Kazuto and Asuna was a touchy subject even if both governments came to an agreement concerning their service. So far, he has stayed quiet while the officers keep watching the students, especially Kazuto and Asuna.
Kazuto could tell from a glance that Chris had some visitors in uniform watching.
'Perhaps they're here to observe our abilities..' Kazuto thought. He quickly got back to his training.
Asuna also saw the officers. 'Are those seniors?'
"You're slacking, rich girl!" The female instructor barked. "Stop looking about!"
"Yes ma'am!" Asuna replied before resuming her training. She had a feeling of being singled out, but she was not going to let it bother her.
Meanwhile, Suguha was being hounded as well. She's managed to keep up. But the female drill instructors proved to be vicious in their bark.
"I'm not seeing any sweat, girl!" The female drill instructor barked.
"I am," Suguha groaned.
"I've seen chihuahua dogs perform push-ups more than that!"
Suguha glared up at her instructor.
"Quit glaring up and get back to those push-ups!" She ordered.
"Yes, ma'am." Sugu groaned.
"What's that, missy!? I can't hear you!" She yelled.
"Yes ma'am!" Sugu resumed the push-ups.
"More like it!"
Things are a bit better with both Randy and Nathan.
"Hooah, boys! Only thirty-five more push-ups to go!"
"Yes sir!" The two boys acknowledged.
"You boys are actually following along! Seems you are the good listeners to the Captain!"
"Just being the best of the best, sir!" Randy replied.
"Very good! Now keep at it!"
"Yes sir!" Nathan yelled. In his mind, Nathan has taken the training seriously. If he was honest, he had some advance warning from Strea. She learned about what Nathan and the others have been doing in the last month. Strea had also learned about Chris Burke's decision to appoint drill instructors in advance.
Nathan was able to reassure her that he'll be alright as he managed to survive for a month. Especially after he learned of his powers of super-speed. It was curious however that only Kazuto and Asuna were being considered as Avengers, but then again, he had enough of the worrying nagging from his mother. It's the last thing he needed is his family to become extremely worried about him and his safety. In fact, the rumors spreading through the school already had enough people on edge.
Nathan continued his push-ups to take his mind off.
The hour dragged on before it was finally over, and most were feeling quite sore.
"I'd be lying if I say you did great!" Hartman stated. "But I've seen worse! Most of you did good! Still, none of you even come close to the Captain or Old Sam, both who can warm up two good hours before sunrise!"
That elicited groans from the students, especially the girls. It was one thing to be compared to the 28-year old Captain Burke, but being compared to the older general was an even lower blow.
'Oh boy... these kids are gonna have to compete with Old Sam..' Damion thought with amusement.
'Sorry, but not sorry,' Jenson sadistically grinned. Neither of them said a word as Hartman continued.
"Groan all you want! But the fact remains that all of you need more training! If you thought the Captain was tough on all of you, that was Easy Street!"
Most of the students started to feel uneasy, while others remained stoic.
"But that'll be for tomorrow!" Hartman reminded. "Atten-hut!"
Everyone snapped into attention.
"Dismissed!"
Chris watched as only some of the students nearly collapsed, only to be caught by the other students. However, Kazuto and Asuna proved to be only slightly exhausted, still standing tall over many.
The Japanese officers watched on towards the young married couple. Chris took it upon himself to walk over to them, as the students started to head back to the locker rooms.
Kazuto straightened up as the herculean Captain approached. "Hope we did great, Captain." Kazuto said.
"Come with me, you and Asuna," Chris simply said with a nod.
"Understood, Captain.." Kazuto acknowledged before he and Asuna began following Chris.
"Kirito..." Asuna felt the urge to lean on her husband as she saw the men with senior rank insignias.
"Don't worry, Asuna.." Kazuto reassured her as he held her. Chris glanced back in the corner of his eye. He silently chided the two in his thoughts. Their affections made this all the harder to do. However, the Japanese officers doesn't seem to notice or care.
"Now that class is over," Major Ushio stated. "let's continue this inside..."
"The Self-Defense Forces," Asuna recognized the uniform.
Without another word, the Kirigayas followed the JSDF inside along with Chris. Kazuto and Asuna noticed both Damion and Jenson escorting the JSDF officers and felt at ease. They also saw that two high ranking Americans had also joined them.
Neither Kazuto nor Asuna knew where they were being taken, but they had a feeling it had something to do with becoming the new Avengers.
They were brought into the Captain's school office. Kazuto and Asuna were offered seats, followed by the military officers.
"Kazuto and Asuna," Chris began, he took the papers for this meeting from Major Ushio. "As you two have noticed, we've observed gym class today." Chris pointed to his American superiors. "These gentlemen are here on orders from our HQ regarding the both of you."
"We understand, Burke-taichou.." Asuna acknowledged.
Chris nodded. 'They are sharp,' he thought. "Here are your notices then, from your Ministry of Defense." He extended the papers to the two students.
Kazuto takes the papers as he and Asuna read them. True enough, it was what they suspected... these were Notices of Service, recently implemented with great controversy. For the Kirigayas, this is just a prelude to their services into the new Avengers.
"Wait... JATUSA?" Asuna asked.
"That is correct." Chris nodded.
"We'll be integrated with the US Army?" Kazuto wondered.
"Of course," Chris said, eying the Japanese liaisons. "Consider this as a beginner's quest.."
That drew Chris some stares for using gamer terms.
Asuna smirked softly before replying. "We understand.." Kazuto nodded as well.
"Captain Burke," the Major Ushio said, "with respect to your position, we wish you would not make light of this situation."
Chris just acknowledged before he continued. "Whenever any missions spring up, you two will take part in them." He then added. "And don't worry about missing classes, the teachers will be notified of your absence during the day.. And your assignments will be sent via your student accounts."
"Thank you, Burke-taichou." Kazuto and Asuna bowed.
Major Ushio then spoke up. "Now that everything's been said, let's continue the discussion... as you should both know, this is a delicately crafted deal we have with the Americans. Especially since many people are getting weary of the increasing deployment of American soldiers on Japanese soil..."
"As such, with they way you both have been... proactive and successful in your stances against armed aggression," Ushio worded, "you both are being offered as prime candidates for our military augmentation program."
"And the both of us would be the stepping stone for the program, Ushio-taisa?" Asuna asked.
"Yes," Ushio said with a tone of reservation and resignation.
"Understood, Ushio-taisa." Kazuto nodded, he didn't need to be a political analyst to understand that there was a lot of backroom affairs going on between the two nations. He could tell that the SDF were not exactly hot about the deal, let alone having him and Asuna be onboard as their bargaining chips with the Americans. But with the Hydra Remnants and other factions such as Red Rising Sun, it was clear that there was no other options.
He and Asuna were now getting full time into the military and superhero business.
Cyberspace:
Yui and Strea left their home space in ALO as they flew through the digital expanse. Keen on exploring cyberspace some more.
"Strea, wait up!" Yui called towards her sister ahead.
"Hurry up, Yui!" Strea cheered as she continued to fly forward. "You're too slow!" She giggled.
"Strea!" Yui chases after her. She loved her big-little sister, even though right now she was being silly.
"WEEEEEEEEE!" Strea squealed happily, spinning and twirling around through the cyberspace highway.
"Strea!" Yui called after her as she flew. They both flew a great distance throughout cyberspace.
"Wait up!"
"You can't catch m-" Strea didn't finished as she felt a sudden impact.
"Oof!" Strea fell back with a bounce.
Yui finally caught up to her big-little sister. "You alright, Strea?"
"Yeah..." Strea shook her head as she sat up. "But what did I hit?"
The two sisters looked up to see a fortified firewall. Both of them are aware of firewalls as they studied them. However, this firewall was different.
"This is military... but not American or Russian," Yui realized. Yui scanned it. "Chinese Ministry of National Defense?"
"How far did we travel, Yui?" Strea asked, now confused by the sight of the Chinese military firewall. Yui scanned the distances they've made during the cyberspace travel.
"Too far."
"That is correct." A voice spoke. The two sisters glanced over and see one of the firewall programs in form of a human, Chinese as they both deduced.
"No unauthorized access."
"We're sorry.." Yui stood up and bowed. "But we've misjudged the distance through cyberspace and stumbled here..."
Strea scanned the hologram, and found that it was not a sentient one. "Yui, I don't think that is an AI."
"You are correct, young lady..." The Chinese program replied. "I'm a defense program, tasked of keeping the cyberspace of the Chinese Ministry of National Defense protected of any foreign intrusions.... no unauthorized programs."
"We're sorry.." Both Yui and Strea bowed.
"I'd suggest that you two leave this side of cyberspace before I have to take you in for attempting to breach the firewall.." He warned.
"Come on, Strea..." Yui ushered Strea away. The defender's cold robotic tone was a chilling and emotionless one, as though to emphasize its unfriendly purpose.
Soon enough, the two AI sisters have made a good distance from the Chinese Firewall and begin to return to their own cyberspace. The two then relaxed as they were back in safety.
"That was close..." Strea said. "That was not friendly at all."
"No... They're not..." Yui agreed. She then warned her big-little sister. "Which is why we need to be careful with them."
From the data the sisters both gathered, the Chinese military government was hostile and deeply obsessed with its images of strength. Even after their involvement with Pacifica was exposed in the wake of Hawaii being burned down, China remained a military power.
The removal of the previous leader, widely described as a dictator, was merely replaced with a new set of oligarchs in military uniform and pragmatism. If anything, they're just the same as before the civil war.
"Here you both are."
Both Yui and Strea turned to see Trinity. And she was not alone as the younger-looking AI girl known as Unity was beside her.
"Trinity, Unity..." Yui said as she and Strea bowed. The two American AI sisters bowed back in cultural respect.
Moments later, Trinity asked. "And what have you two been up to?"
Strea beamed. "Flying around! And exploring the world wide web!"
Strea twirled a bit. "There's still so much to learn!"
Trinity gave a soft smile. "As long as the two of you have been staying out of trouble... There are corners of the net to avoid."
"We know..." Yui nodded. "We ran into the Chinese firewall. We traveled a bit too far..."
Unity perked up. "Yui!" She chided, "that is dangerous!"
"I know, Unity.." Yui said before turning to Strea. "I was chasing after Strea.."
"Don't you know what the Chinese do with data they get their hands on!?" Unity scolded, "they steal information!"
Strea's gaze shifted towards the ground, no long feeling excited.
"And what if the two of you had been captured?" Trinity calmly but firmly asked.
"We understand..." Yui acknowledged, she knew what Trinity and Unity meant.
"This is not SAO," Trinity reminded, "there is an entire world out there where many countries are not friendly. While Anderson Tech had security software installed to the both of you, it may not work with those who would try to break through... Especially for those militaries with powerful hacking capabilities."
"Trinity's right, Strea.." Yui then said. "We are free, but we have to be more careful. And it's best not to go anywhere near military networks."
Strea nodded. It was hard to argue with two other advanced AI, including her sister. "Okay, Yui-neesan..."
Trinity said. "Still, I'll have to give you two scans to make sure they're no breaches..." Trinity waved a hand, two windows opened up before her reading the statuses of both Yui and Strea.
"Hmm... So far, everything looks normal..."
"Hold on," Unity's own scans caught something, "of course..." She quickly spotted a couple of unknown programs. Yui and Strea were stunned. Their own scanners didn't detect anything suspicious when they were near the Chinese firewall.
"Luckily for you two," Trinity added. "the bugs didn't have the chance to activate yet..." Both Trinity and Unity deleted the tracker programs from the AI sisters' systems. "... but next time, be more cautious."
"We will, Trinity..." Yui and Strea said in unison.
Yui then glared at her big-little sister, "especially you, Strea-neechan."
Strea recoiled sheepishly, embarrassed from the chase she created. "Yui..."
The little-big sister just sighed. "I know that you didn't mean to have us travel that far to Chinese cyberspace... But now that we know what China's capable of to achieve their goals..."
"Dangerous people," Strea concurred.
Yui then went up and hugged Strea. "It's alright, at least we're okay and nothing else happened." Yui cooed.
Strea smiled as she hugged her little-big sister back. "Perhaps you take the lead when we explore cyberspace, Yui-neesan."
"That's what you said last time," Yui playfully pouted.
"But it's true.." Strea started giggling.
"And you get ahead of me every time!" Yui playfully pushed against her sister, whose hug held firm. Strea giggled some more.
Unity blinked her eyes at the sight, while Trinity watched on and smiled softly. It was cute and touching to see two AI sisters show care for one another like this. Then again, they got human parents who have been raising them since both SAO and ALO. If anything, both Kazuto and Asuna have taught them well and continue to teach them about the human world.
After a few moments, the two AI sisters broke the hug.
"Now with everything out of the way, and your software firewalls have been updated.." Trinity said as she and Unity finished. " I suggest you two stay within American and Coalition cyberspace. Perhaps you can learn more about the world..."
"And stay safe," Unity chimed in.
"We will..." Yui and Strea chimed together.
Trinity then raised her hand. "Now, the both of you need to come with me and Unity."
Yui and Strea followed Trinity and Unity.
"You both are needed," Trinity explained. "Everything will be revealed when we get there..."
SAO/ALO School - One minute after the last bell:
All the students poured out of the classrooms and made their way through the hallways to locker rooms to return home for the day.
Alex closed his locker, his mind on Kazuto and Asuna. The events last week was still fresh on his mind. And while Chris Burke was trying to be discreet, it was clear that he had senior officer leadership with him interested in his two friends. And Alex can only stand by and observe.
He felt frustrated once again. But there's nothing he can do about it. Especially after getting himself into trouble. He isn't going to do it a second time.
"Sugu..."
During the whole weekend, she volunteered to help out with his family. She helped his mother with the chores around the house and his own homework while his dad and elder brother ended up having to go back to base to deal with Captain Burke.
Alex sighed, he never forgot how disappointed the both of them were of him. He then spotted his girl coming out of the girls' locker room. She was laughing and smiling with Keiko and Momiji.
"I know, right!?"
Alex sighed happily upon seeing Sugu, gazed in awe by her beauty, her cheerful smile.
Keiko continues. "Hard to believe Timmy-kun's would advance through history like Randy.."
"I guess both Randy and Kenji would have some competition when it comes to knowledge.." Momiji interjected. "... they say that knowledge and history are power unto themselves."
"Randy said he had studied the Second Civil War more closely..." Keiko remarked. "Particularly, the exploits of Captain Burke."
"I think he's also a fan of Captain Anderson as well.." Suguha pointed out. "He has mentioned how he rallies everyone in America over not just the Accords. But to restore the industry in the nation itself."
"Though it sounds tough being a fan of both," Keiko said, "given how those two seem to disagree a lot."
"That's true.." Momiji agreed. "Despite they're on the same team and have the same goals... yet they differ on the methods and focus of their military efforts and training."
"I guess Captain Burke's more on brute force while Captain Anderson's on the technical advantage.." Sugu commented.
"More accurate to say that Captain America believes more in the tactical acumen and physical and mental strength of trained and experienced soldiers," Momiji corrected, "and you know what, I happen to agree with him. Even if he tends to be rough on us..."
Keiko gave Momiji a surprised look. "You admire him?"
"I do..." Momiji explained. "I mean, he'd endured much of the fighting against the Blue Cosmos during the Texas Campaign."
"I mean... a fresh officer graduate being thrown into a guerilla resistance, and forming one of the most potent field armies in his homeland's fight for reunification and survival? That is the mark of a very extraordinary man."
"I'm sorry," Suguha wondered, "but are you crushing on him?"
"Eep!" Momiji's face flushed upon hearing that question. "Before I got stuck inside SAO, yes I did."
"Does Kenji know?" Suguha asked.
Momiji blushed embarrassedly. "Uh... Well...." She stammered.
"I'm sure he doesn't get jealous." Keiko reassured.
"Please don't tell him," Momiji said, "it's all a past crush. I only admire Chris Burke for his perseverance and what he stands for."
"Don't worry, Momiji-san. We won't say anything..." Sugu smiled. "And you know what," She added, "despite recent events, I also have a lot to thank him for."
That caught Alex's overhearing ears.
"You have?" Keiko blinked. "Do tell..."
"Even though he was rough from the beginning." Sugu began. "But it is because of him that we were rescued from ALO... As well as rescued Asuna and the other SAO survivors..."
Suguha then said, "and he is giving my brother and sister-in-law a chance to make things right, under his protection and authority."
"And become part of the new Avengers.." Keiko added before nervously asked, "though aren't you scared for them?"
"To be honest, I am..." Suguha admitted. "Who wants to see them go off to war?"
"That sounds bolded coming from you, Sugu." Momiji pointed out. "I'd be scared for them to death."
"We all were...." Keiko pondered for a moment before adding. "Well.... almost all of us..."
Alex turned his gaze downward, he felt shame wash over him. Here he was, living the school life while Kazuto and Asuna are out fighting a war in the real world. It was like he was forced to be normal while his two best friends went to risk their lives for the cause of peace.
'If only there's a way to help out...' Alex thought wistfully. He just stood there and pondered about it.
Suguha then turned and saw her boyfriend. She went over and gave him a gentle hug.
"Alex-kun..." She said in a soft, honeyed tone.
Alex blinked and looked up to see her and smiled before returning the hug. "Hey, Sugu..."
"Alex," Suguha said, "you seemed a bit out of it."
"I'm sorry, Sugu. I just got so much on my mind..." Alex sighed. "You know that Kazuto and Asuna were taken aside, right?"
"I know..." Sugu admitted. "But there's nothing that we can do... Those men in uniform looked like military headquarters staff. Probably observing their performance at gym class today."
"No... more than that I think," Alex shook as he said this. "I think they're here to recruit them.. I could see it with the way Chris just looked at them."
Sugu signs, knowing what he meant by that statement. From the past six months, many became familiar with how Chris Burke communicated and worked. Especially after recent events, they're now more than interested.
She then said. "What are the chances that they are being taken to a base or the Defense Ministry? It's a big possibility of that happening..." She continues. "And some of us are displaying super powers already. It won't take long until they become interested in us..."
Alex's expression deepened as he thought of some of the manifestations he witnessed among his friends at various times. This includes his own powers. One time, he observed a softball nearly hitting Keiko, only for Tim to save her. By using his telekinesis powers to deflect the soft ball away slightly.
Then there was another incident with Rika. While Tim didn't protect her, Rika manifested her powers. She developed superhuman strength with the soft ball bat. She was scoring so many hits out of the park that referees had to stop her.
Scott was impressed by her quick reflexes and strength. Sugu chuckled at the memory. Of course, school staff and defense officers noticed, so it was only a matter of time.
"No matter what happens, Alex.." She said. "We'll face it together..."
"Yes, Sugu," Alex gave a sad smile, "just wish we were together in a more peaceful time."
"So do I, Alex..." Sugu agreed. "So do I..."
Alex then offered his hand. Sugu sees it and takes his hand. "How about we go to Akihabara for a bit," Alex suggested.
Sugu gave a quick glance to him and nodded. "Sure, we can do that..." The two teens both began moving through the hallways, which is becoming empty by the minute.
Meanwhile:
Kazuto and Asuna found themselves in an SDF transport chinook helicopter with Captain Burke as escort.
"Make sure you two strap in." One of the soldiers advised. Kazuto nodded as he buckled up, before helping his wife with hers.
"Thanks, Kazuto..." Asuna smiled. She was glad to have Kazuto by her side. Captain Burke was the last to buckle up before the chopper begins to take off. Sitting beside him were Specialist Burton and his fireteam.
Both Kazuto and Asuna didn't say anything out or respect of protocol. Across from them were several JGSDF Rangers, direct counterparts to Chris Burke's own US Army Rangers. As well as lead by their own commanding officer, similar to Captain Burke.
And this officer turned out to be a woman, interestingly enough. They glanced at the name tag. Okada...
She quietly stared forward, not particularly towards anybody. The married couple didn't dare to break the silence. Kazuto felt awkward, sitting in silence, even if the helicopter engine did a lot to alleviate some of it.
At last, Okada spoke. "Kazuto Kirigaya. I'm Captain Michika Okada. 1st Airborne Ranger Brigade."
Both Kazuto and Asuna nodded. Chris looked at her. "So the SDF has formed Ranger brigades after all."
"Indeed, we have, Captain America..." Okada replied. "We must after all must take the lead in defending our country from the traitors and insurrectionists that call themselves Hydra. This is not just your country's fight."
"Good to know, Captain Okada..." Chris nodded. "This is as much your war as it is ours."
Kazuto and Asuna smiled softly, at least the ride's going a bit smooth.
"Japan is a special and sacred land for us, much like your own," Okada was surprisingly diplomatic, "we are sworn to defend it from enemies external and internal."
"And we'll do what we can to ease tensions between your military and our citizens as well.." She added.
"This also includes introducing the New Avengers..."
Kazuto and Asuna looked to each other. They both figured that word travels faster in the military. This was also confirmation of the collaboration between the US Army and the SDF.
Then, they remembered Nick Fury and OSS.
'Definitely Fury's help," Asuna thought. 'good we have him on our side..'
Silence filled the helicopter cabin again. Chris looked out the window, he sees the target destination in sight. It was Camp Asaka, regional HQ of the SDF's Eastern Army.
The pilot called out. "We're about to land! Hold on tight!"
"We're here," Damion told his team, "let's behave ourselves with our hosts."
Moments later, the helicopter touched down and the rotor blades started to slow. The rear door swung open and everyone got out, with Captain Burke leading the way. Damion and his Foxtrot team filed out and spread out in front of the rear hatch.
Kazuto and Asuna were escorted along with the SDF Rangers. Okada took a commanding stride in front of the two.
"Welcome to Camp Asaka..." Okada said. "... your new home for the next month."
Kazuto and Asuna looked towards the military base. They both knew now that this was the real deal.
'At least my family will be notified regarding our absence..' Asuna thought.
'This is it... Sugu, Mom, Dad...' Kazuto thought about his old family. 'We're taking up the mantles as superheroes..'
'Pray for us...'
And together, they headed on towards the military base.
Hydra Base Somewhere in Japan:
Samuel Sterns continued observing the unconscious Hailey Felix. So far, the results are looking very promising. He smiled evilly as he recalled all of the reconditioning he forced onto her. The reprogramming procedure went successfully without fault.
And now she would become the ultimate weapon in the revival of Hydra.
"And now, for the final adjustments for our country star..." Sterns added with a devious grin.
He raised a vial of formula. It glowed a radiant blue. "Delta Force may have destroyed our research in Africa... But at least we had made plenty of the super-soldier serum samples for our elite soldiers... and what better weapon against your boyfriend than you?"
Sterns turned his attention back to the unconscious Hailey. "You once sang the songs of outdated patriotism... But soon, you'll be singing songs of the world ruled by Hydra..."
He looked to his assistants. "Prepare the Vita Radiation!"
"Yes sir." One of the assistant acknowledged before he and the others turned to the terminals and typed in the commands. While there were many attempts to recreate the Super Soldier Serum before, what the United States and Captain Anderson figured out was that the most stable and reliable method of creating men like Captain America was what Dr. Erskine used.
Fortunately, from what he heard from Hydra spies, the US government only made a few of the serums. It was not only expensive, but there were fears of the true secret behind the formula leaking out. Sterns laughed at that.
"Always cautious, always cowardly..." Sterns remarked. Hailey's cradle and prison arose into the upright position.
"The Vita Radiation is ready, sir." One of the assistants said. The shield closed around the cradle. The assistant typed in the command and injected the super-soldier serum inside the metal cocoon. The blue liquid traveled through the tubes. And entered inside the metal cocoon, and into Hailey.
That jolted her awake. Sterns watched on, unsure if this is part of the procedure. Her eyes then looked around, but it was not with her former gentleness. It was am icy cold glare. Sterns then smiled, knowing that the reprogramming had worked.
"Just give us a moment, dear..." He turned to his assistants. "Results?"
"Incredible... we haven't even started irradiation, and she is already showing positive responses," one of them said.
Another one added. "With any luck, we'll be able to speed up the process."
"Beginning irradiation!"
And with that, the assistants typed in the commands and the next phase begins. With the shield closed, the emitters inside powered up. The glass canopy was coated in a bright blue light from within. There were screams from inside, which made Sterns gleefully grin.
"And so, our rebirth begins!"
June 13th ~ Five days later:
Alex, Suguha, and their friends made their way towards the Dicey Café. Everyone finished school for the week and are getting ready for the weekend. However, the absence of Kazuto and Asuna was strongly felt. Most of them felt uneasy, especially after what happened last week.
News of Chris taking them away spread on the rumor mill like a fire. And despite their protests, it was the military's decision and there's nothing they can do about it.
But now that the weekend's here, they'll have to continue on through ALO without their dear friends. Which is one of the reasons that they're meeting at the Café to discuss the matter.
"What a downer without Kazuto and Asuna," Rika groaned.
"You said it, Rika..." Keiko agreed.
"We just don't make as much progress in Alfheim without them," Scott shook his head.
"They're basically the major chess pieces in our guild." Tim sighed. "While most of us are good, neither of us can keep up without them..."
"Why did it have to be them?" Scott groaned, "why did Captain Burke have to take them to be soldiers in his war!?"
"Watch your mouth," Randy chided, "that is Captain America you're talking about."
Scott was about to retort, but Rika held his hand. "He's right, Scotty-kun. I don't like it as much as you do, but it's happening..."
"... and knowing Chris," Alex sighed, "once he has his mind set on something, he executes." He also added, "And, it's best not to get in his way either... it is a battle you don't win."
Scott paused, not sure what else he can say.
Suguha then spoke, "we should trust that he knows what he's doing and that he will look after them. ... That's all we can do..."
"He does owe them big time for saving him during the attack on USFJ," Alex added.
Everyone arrived at the café and entered inside. Trish was the one manning the counter this time. And the café wasn't as busy as it was normally.
"Looks like we'll have the place to ourselves... Mostly..." Rika commented. They noticed a few patrons inside, some of whom are normal civilians.
Trish saw them and waved. "Welcome to the café, friends!" She chimed. "You all look like you can use refreshments!"
"We sure do, Trish-san." Suguha nodded with a smile. She looked around and did not see Andrew. "Where is your husband?"
"He's overlooking the locations of the second café.." Trish explained. "You recall that we've been getting more customers coming here. So, we've expanded the business." She beamed.
"That's good to hear." Sugu smiled. "Now, you two can get the business expanded."
Trish then noticed Kazuto and Asuna as missing. "Where's Mister and Misses Kirigaya? Are they not coming?"
"Well..." Suguha said, "Captain America-"
"What about me?" A crisp Texan voice sounded behind Suguha and Alex.
"EEP!" Sugu squeaked in surprise as she and Alex turned around to see Captain Burke standing at the entrance.
"Chris- I mean, Captain!" Alex greeted, surprised at how the Herculean walked up unnoticed. "Trish was just asking about our friends." He quickly added.
"I know," Chris said as he stepped in to the awe of the SAO/ALO friend group and other patrons in his unique utility uniform, "and to answer that question..." He stepped aside.
Alex and Suguha looked who was behind Chris.
"Kazuto, Asuna?" Alex asked.
"We're here..." Kazuto smiled.
"In the flesh... or uniform." Kazuto chuckled as he spread his arms out, showing that he was in American Army Combat Uniform camouflage, with the Japanese flag patch on his right shoulder, a patch of the United States Army, Japan on his other shoulder, and chest patches with his surname, the rank of private, and army identification reading as 'JGSDF/USAR'.
Asuna's uniform is similar to Kazuto's, She kept her signature side braid, but her hair was now tied into a bun in the back.
"We're sorry that we've worried all of you.." Asuna apologized. "But we are not allowed our cellphones or any electronics during our basic on-base."
Suguha went up and hugged both Kazuto and Asuna. She was not crying, but smiling and happy. Moments later, Rika and Keiko joined in the hug.
"You two idiots!" Rika laughed. "I can't believe you can leave school and go to the army!"
"Rika!" Asuna didn't keel over, but she still felt a bit smothered by the other girls. Scott, Tim, and Randy chuckled at the scene.
Suddenly, Chris cleared his throat as Damion, Jenson, Schwartz, and Wang suddenly came in with their rifles slung. Understanding what the Captain wanted, Damion and Jenson easily pried the girls off of Kazuto and Asuna. "I know you all missed them, but don't go choking my new recruits," Chris said.
Sugu, Rika, and Keiko felt sheepish. "We understand, Burke-taichou." Sugu said.
"I only brought them here as a reward for their good behavior and military evaluation scores thus far," Chris said, "but after this, they are coming back with me to base." He then turned back to Kazuto and Asuna as they straightened their uniforms. "You both are granted two hours, and then we return to base."
"Understood, Captain..." Kazuto acknowledged.
"Yes sir," Asuna said as she saluted firmly, being more mindful of customs and courtesies. Kazuto seemed confused for a bit, then stumbling a bit as he saluted. "Yes, Captain sir!"
"Work on that, soldier," Chris told it to Kazuto. "When you complete basic training successfully, I expect even more discipline from you."
"Yes sir." Kazuto nodded before he and Asuna stepped forward to join the others.
Chris then addressed Damion. "You and your men stand guard here, Specialist. I will order some chow for you."
"Will do, sir." Damion saluted, they remained on guard as the Captain approached Trish.
"Well good afternoon, Captain!" Trish playfully saluted, "how may I be of service?"
While Chris was ordering food, Kazuto and Asuna gathered around with their friends.
"Wow, those are real and genuine American military uniforms," Suguha marveled.
"And you even have matching caps," Keiko pointed to the patrol caps the couple held.
"It's a shame that you two can't have your SAO versions of the military uniforms..." Rika remarked with a giggle.
"Well," Kazuto said as he rubbed his cap, "the Self-Defense Forces and the US Army gave us the early hint that they do not cater to personal preferences. What is standard to them, we work with."
"That's good to hear.." Randy remarked.
Nathan looked on at Kazuto. Part of him is very proud for both Kazuto and Asuna. Yet, if what he heard about Chris Burke was right, they were about to go into serious danger alongside him. USSOCOM often gave Chris and his Rangers some of the most dangerous frontline missions because of his competence.
'I wonder how both Strea and Yui reacted to this?' Nathan thought. 'Of course they would have to know.'
At least they're proud for their parents' success. As everyone gathered around the table, everyone was asking if the training there was as grueling as the training at the school.
"Do they make you exercise harder!?"
"I bet you did far more push-ups than all of us!"
Kazuto and Asuna found themselves crowded by their friends.
"What about weapons training?"
"Does it include melee weapons as well?"
"More like firearms and explosives." Kazuto answered, "though there is going to be some martial training I hear."
"Neat." Sugu remarked.
"Though Kazuto-kun here seems to be challenged on not talking back to the instructors when he doesn't have to," Asuna pouted towards her husband, "and he gets chewed out a lot as a result."
Kazuto felt sheepish on that statement.
"And getting past basic is the simplest thing you can do, man," Scott added.
"Just don't try to do it for real." Alex warned.
"Do what?" Kazuto asked.
"Challenge him..." Alex answered before he gazed downward. "You know how seriously he takes his job. Don't forget that he and his dad are very powerful and influential men as well.
Kazuto nodded. "Okay, I will..."
"Still, to be sponsored by the new Captain America himself," Keiko said, "that must be a huge honor."
"Not to mention most of us are envy." Kotone added.
"Well I'm not," Nijika protested, "do you all not think that they are too young for military service!?"
I feel the same here," Haruto agreed. "I mean, I know that we played a part of stopping Hydra... But it would make sense if we were a bit older to join the military."
"Good, because I cannot lose you to war," Nijika admitted. She then hugged Haruto. "It'll be too much for me to handle..."
"You won't lose me," Haruto muttered.
Asuna spoke up. "Well, no matter what winds come our way, we will stick together through the thick and thin. Just like we have been back in SAO..." She then glanced down to her hat and uniform. "Even though things have been complicated in the past few months.." She admitted.
"And there is a lot of politics involved, and among two nations no less," Kazuto added. "It's a lot for us to take in at once..."
Kazuto smiled. "But, we've managed so far..."
"So how long is this basic of yours gonna take?" Rika asked, "because it seems that both the SDF and the US Army are all too eager to send you both out into the line of duty."
"Well, I wouldn't say they're that eager..." Asuna replied cheerfully, reassuring Rika.
"But they do have a lot invested in us," Kazuto said, "in part thanks to Captain Burke's sponsorship."
"Of course..." Rika sighed. "It's like a scholarship... only that it involves war and fighting."
"An opposite of a military education..." Randy pointed out. "But with the ongoing war against Hydra remnants, I highly doubt education would stop them..."
Kazuto laughed. "Well Asuna and I are learning things..."
"And at a fast pace..." Asuna added with a giggle.
"For one," Kazuto gestured with his arms as though holding something, "I can assemble and work the controls of both a Howa Type 89 and an American M4A1 without even having to look."
"Awesome..." Randy gleamed.
"But hey," Kazuto teased, "I can still beat all the others in speed like the back of my hand."
"I bet your superiors were impressed." Randy quipped.
Kazuto glanced over to Chris in his Captain America uniform. "We could tell that they are impressed..." He said.
Meanwhile, Captain America awaited his food orders. He made a quick glance towards Kazuto and Asuna. He could see how happy they were to talk with friends for the short time they had. With the accelerated training regime that JATUSA candidates were subjected to due to Japan's state of emergency and the insurgency in the country, free time outside of SDF and American bases was a rarity.
For the moment, he'll let them have down time with their friends. He then heard someone sit next to him. He didn't need to look sideways to know who it was. "You're late, Kikuoka."
"No need to be so blunt, Burke-taicho." Kikuoka polished his glasses before adding. " I see both Kazuto and Asuna are enjoying the peaceful environment."
"They are, despite the war going on out there.." Chris remarked.
"Funny, isn't it?" Kikuoka said.
Chris just looked at him. "How so?"
"In cities like Tokyo and Osaka, hardly that much has changed," Kikuoka went on. Whatever goes on in the world, everyone in those cities moves on with their lives..."
"While my troops and other 3rd Ranger Battalion platoons are doing the heavy lifting," Chris replied, "and your MoD has only just recently formed your own Ranger Brigades."
"That is correct..." Kikuoka nodded. He had to concede that to Chris, whom many of his colleagues found to be too blunt and straightforward for their Japanese sensibilities. And now, with new factions showing up, both Chris and Kikuoka have their work cut out for them.
As Steve Rogers was over on Okinawa smoothing things out for Chris' combat operations with the Pentagon, it was decided that Kikuoka as an SDF colonel would be able to exercise some tactical jurisdiction over the new SDF Ranger Brigades and Howler Platoon teams operating in the immediate Tokyo metro area. Likewise, Chris was also told to play nice with Kikuoka and give him deference as though under his jurisdiction.
"And as you've requested, they've been given evaluations regarding their actions in both SAO and ALO." Chris continued. "It's as I and Captain Anderson suspected. There is a difference in their physiology and mental acuity from before they were trapped in both games."
"Indeed." Kikuoka nodded. "The whole experience has changed them.... and what your intelligence director shared was quite fascinating."
'Fury...' Chris had to resist rolling his eyes. He sometimes wished that Fury would not be so behind-the-scenes with going around his chain of command. However, since he had been assisting the Howlers during the whole ALO Incident and with missions even before the Second Civil War...
"Do tell," Chris decided to reply, not feigning ignorance while not acknowledging that he knew what Kikuoka was talking about.
Kikuoka glanced towards the young couple and their friends before turning back to Chris. "The only question is how Kayaba got his hands on that. For him to have access to it, let alone implement it."
Chris gave Kikuoka a look. "Do we have to discuss this here in public?"
"Well, since Kayaba took interest in the Kirigayas and their friends..." Kikuoka replied. "I also decided to do a deep dive on Kazuto-kun's background. So far, we only found his biological parents died in a car accident when he was an infant and was adopted..."
"I already know that, sir," Chris replied in his dry bluntness, "I can read the dossiers, even in Japanese."
"Correct..." Kikuoka nodded.
'Definitely a straight-shooter of a Texan,' Kikuoka mentally sighed to himself.
While Chris and Kikuoka continued the discussion, Kazuto and Asuna were catching up with their friends.
"We miss the both of you," Keiko said, "in ALO and New Aincrad."
"It's not the same clearing floors without you two." Rika added. "Even the race leaders are wondering what happened with the both of you."
"I know, Eugene's been looking for a rematch with me..." Kazuto chuckled.
Kotone meanwhile shyly glanced over to Damion. She knew that he's still on duty and cannot mingle with civilians right now. However, behind his goggles, Damion gave a wink and smile towards her. This caused Kotone to blush a little, knowing that he's watching behind the visor.
"Um guys?" Randy was looking at his phone.
"What is it?" Scott asked.
"Someone on the street filmed both Kazuto and Asuna getting out of the MRAP the Captain was driving," Randy said, "and social media's exploding."
"I guess someone else also noticed Kazuto's and Asuna's absence.." Alex groaned. True enough, there were posts and reposts of the pictures and videos of the lovely duo in uniform.
"Great..." Nijika sighed. "Now we're never gonna get out..."
"I wonder who leaked it." Haruto pondered.
"Probably just some passersby being a fanboy or fangirl," Nijika grumbled.
Haruto shrugged, that could be true.
"Yuuki Family Heiress and New Husband Pressed Into Military Service?" Kenji read off with Momiji. "Whoever leaked this to the press knew that our friends have been drafted.."
"I highly doubt that, Kenji-kun..." Momiji replied. "I'm sure it was just a coincidence..."
"Well, Asuna does still have a lit of admirers," Kazuto said with a hind of marital jealousy.
Asuna noticed this and hugs Kazuto gently. "Aww... It's alright..." She cooed. "I'm sure it is just out of respect for what I did back in Alfheim. Many are still grateful for Hydra's plan being foiled."
Kazuto smiled and sighed. "I guess you're right, Asuna.."
"It's like back in 2014, when Captain Rogers, the first Captain America, revealed and foiled Hydra's plans for world domination..." Randy quipped.
"You got that right, kid." A voice spoke up. A voice said, everyone turned around towards the source of the voice. It was the gentlemen who was sitting at the table next to them. He appeared to be in his mid-to-late thirties with fair skin, his brown hair trimmed and combed. He was wearing the brown leather jacket and military khaki pants and black boots.
"Sorry if I was eavesdropping, but I couldn't help but overhear your conversation." The man sat in the chair next to them.
Chris, Damion, and the other soldiers quietly noticed the stranger. Damion was a bit weirded out by the suddenness of the appearance that he quietly adjusted his hold on his weapon.
Randy then asked the stranger. "And who you might be?"
"Wainio…Todd Wainio..." The man said.
Chris then heard a buzz in his hidden earpiece. "Howler 7-1 Actual, Onyx 0-1, do you copy?"
"Read you," Chris whispered nonchalantly, recognizing the callsign of the Delta Force team that had been shadowing him, Kazuto, and Asuna. Perhaps they're calling to report him about the crowd of reporters gathering outside the café. But, he highly doubt it.
"My overwatch just reported an individual flagged by Anacostia enter your vicinity, white Caucasian, trimmed brown hair, and wearing brown leathers, khakis, and black boots."
Chris's eyes narrowed towards the man sitting at the table with Kazuto, Asuna, and the others.
"Do you have eyes on?"
"Affirmative..." Chris whispered as he felt for his M2011 and its safety. "Colonel Seijirou, we have to continue another time, but please go to the head for your own safety."
Kikuoka was confused, but he nodded as he sat up and headed towards the restroom. On his way, he made one quick glance towards the group, including the stranger.
Chris got a better look of the man as he continued to talk. He noticed a few details on him. One of them is the scar on the left side of his face, close to his left cheek. He also spotted a tattoo on his neck, which is covered by the collar of his jacket. Upon seeing those details, the alert veteran alarm bells went off in Chris' head, his hand now silently, but firmly on the grip of his gun.
As Wainio continued chatting. "...And that's how I helped the resistance push back the Pacificans and Blue Cosmos out of Bloodshy, Arizona..."
"Wow... That's incredible..." Randy was awed. He had heard of towns and cities under siege of both Pacifica and the Blue Cosmos out West.
"Indeed it is, kid." Wainio chuckled. "And it wasn't easy either.." He made glances towards Kazuto and Asuna. "Just like how you two made a difference back in January..."
"Excuse me," Kazuto asked, "but would you happen to have anything to do with our American commander... Captain Chris Burke?"
"During the Civil War?" Wainio asked. "I only met him a couple of times, but got stranded in Arizona and after Bloodshy, I traveled around to help other resistance cells throughout Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado..."
He then frowned and sighed. "I've seen horrible things during that war... The cruelty the enemy unleashed on innocent people... And their pets... And even after all that... I just wanted to punish them all."
"I know that feeling, Wainio-san.." Kazuto agreed. "Even after what Nobuyuki did, I wanted to punish him for it..." He sighed before he continued. "But, that wasn't my call. And now, he's rotting away on the Raft..."
Asuna held his hand, stroking it with care.
"That's good to hear.." Wainio nodded. "At least there's a positive side of the Civil War... At least the Global Economic Community didn't get involved in the war. Not after the New Knights of Britain decimated them in Europe." He sighed again. "I don't want to think about what would happen if they did..."
Chris then stood up just as Trish came back. "Captain, sir?"
Chris just took his yen out, with additional bills and laid them out on the bar counter top. "Please keep our food in the back and warm for five minutes," he said ominously, "and some additional bills as compensation just in case. Now get back."
To emphasize his point, Chris showed Trish his grip on his holstered 9mm, taking the gun off safe.
Trish nodded and headed back to the kitchen. "Oh dear..." she muttered.
Wainio continued. "Anyway, I just hope that the same mistakes aren't repeated. Can't afford to have a Third Civil War..."
Chris suddenly walked up behind Wainio. "Connor... how dare you show your face here."
Wainio turned to see Chris standing behind him. "I beg your pardon, sir?"
"Don't play dumb, Connor," Chris brushed off the question, "you remember that I am hard on forgetting a face when I see one." Chris suddenly unholstered his gun to a low ready position, careful to remain just a little beyond 'Wainio's' arm's reach. "Move away from both privates, Connor. You're under arrest."
"And so I am..." Wainio replied calmly. The teens were a bit freaked out by this. However, they remained calm as Wainio stood up slowly with both hands behind his head.
"I want to see both hands, Connor," Chris gestured with his pistol. "Jenson, Schwartz, restrain him!"
The two Howler soldiers nodded before approaching Wainio, Jenson producing zip ties and snapped them over his wrists.
"What's going on?" Suguha was confused as she watched.
"I don't know..." Alex answered, unsure why this is happening.
"Connor Morgan, you are under arrest for crimes of sedition, murder, desertion under subpoena by military tribunal, fleeing United States jurisdiction, and violations of the Treaty of Restoring the Union prohibiting further military hostilities in the territory of the United States," Chris revealed.
Keiko held her hand up to her mouth as she gasped in shock.
"And murders including the deaths of 61 soldiers and marines under my charge authorized to apprehend you," Chris finished.
Connor Morgan remained silent as the zip ties tighten.
"What?" Kazuto was surprised. "He's a war criminal?"
"Got you now, traitor," Schwartz growled.
"And so you have.." Connor remarked.
"Captain," Kazuto was about to ask.
"Private, let us handle this," Chris told Kazuto.
"Yes, sir.." Kazuto nodded as he remained silent.
Chris then tapped on his earpiece. "Onyx Team, HVT in custody. We'll need Okinawa to get Anacostia to confirm the target's ID."
"Affirmative, Howler 7-1 Actual. Sending in an escort to your location." Onyx 0-1 replied.
Connor looked dismissively towards Chris. "Even as Captain America... you still have to be the DIA and Daniels' little lap puppy, don't you? And I thought the brain-drain tactic died off in the Civil War.." He added.
"Says one who cannot stop recruiting for a renegade militia from a war long over," Chris retorted calmly.
"Funny, I figured we were all on the same side.." Connor retorted. "Given how the previous government allowed the Blue Cosmos to cause chaos even before the Civil War started..."
"We were until you started to kill our soldiers and marines in the midst of your post-war revenge killing after the treaty signing," Chris pointed out.
"We were hunting down the Remnants that resisted." Connor replied. "Not my fault Pacifism still lingered around after all that suffering."
"And you crossed the line when you burned down Medford and butchered those 61 soldiers and marines ordered to stop you," Chris said.
Kazuto, Asuna, and the others were shocked from what they're hearing. Minutes ago, this Connor seemed very nice.
"61 service members and 913 innocent people on your hands. You may have once served honorably," Chris added, "but you have to answer as a warmongering murderer. This also includes your renegade organization.. The New Knights of America..."
"Wait... that means you murdered 974 people..." Momiji gasped.
Randy however, remained silent as he processed of what he is hearing and witnessing... "Connor Morgan... a murderer?"
Kazuto and Asuna, on the other hand, remember the conversation with Chris and Preston a few months back regarding the war. They remember hearing something about Pacifican and Blue Cosmos soldiers being crucified during the final stages of the war.
It didn't take long for the young married couple to put them all together and came to the conclusion. This New Knights of America are responsible for the war crimes they've committed towards the enemy.
"Kazuto and Asuna Kirigaya deserve better, Burke," Connor grit his teeth as he was forced to sit on the floor by Schwartz and Jenson, while Damion and Wang came to back them up with rifles pointed. "Your military command is just afraid they can't control them. They're making the same mistakes the old government and the United Nations did."
"And besides..." Connor continued. "Most of them in Japan remained safe and sound while we suffered back home... They could've staged an siege on Hawaii and capture the state. And the state would not have been burned down by Pacifica, China, and Australia.."
"You're blaming us for something we didn't start," Chris told him.
"I'm just blaming the lack of courage the Pacific Fleet Command had for not taking action and putting down Pacifica and ending the war earlier.." Connor growled.
"Well, your impatience and thirst for revenge nearly cost us the peace and reunification," Chris talked back, "and Wilson's reconciliation has held up. So what does that make you and your band?"
"The last resort of conquering America's enemies. From overseas or from within..." Connor spat back.
"Was Jacobs your enemy when your men slaughtered him?" Chris asked rhetorically.
The group of teens were stunned, they looked at Chris, then back at Connor. He then seemed to have a look of brief regret.
"You stood aside while your knights killed him." Chris scolded in a calm voice, "so much for love of country and fellow man."
Then Connor replied darkly. "He was my friend until the Pacifists brainwashed him into showing the enemy mercy... I almost lost him several times up to the Golden Gate Bridge attack.."
This was disturbing to hear. However, Connor didn't seem to be finished. "He even saw what the Blue Cosmos did to people in Montrose, Colorado.... The murdered pets, the innocent families... The mass graves..."
He then started to stand up. Only to be forced back down again.
"You're not spreading your personal war abroad, I'll see to it that you face justice at home," Chris told him.
Connor became silent then, no further exchanges are made.
"No... not until I finish..." He spoke.. "Soldiers fight for what's right..." He started to stand up.
"Hey, sit down!" Damion pointed his rifle in Connor's face.
"On the contrary, I think you should sit down.." Connor replied. No one noticed Connor's hands begin to arc electricity.
"Connor, don't," Chris warned, but then noticed the static arcs. They increased in size and density.
Kazuto and Asuna also saw this and realized danger.
"Everyone, get behind us!" Asuna ordered.
"Stand down!" Chris and Damion quickly raised their weapons. But too late it seems, Connor broke free of the zip ties and electricity arcs around him.
"What the blazes!?" Jenson yelled as other patrons screamed and fell to the floor.
Chris and Damion opened fire with M2011 and M4v1 respectively. However, they seem to have no effect on him.
Meanwhile, Asuna produced an large energy shield and everyone hid behind it.
"Get down!" Asuna yelled as sparks and gunfire erupted. Everyone sees the white energy dome materialized and they all ducked behind it. Chris and Damion shot at Connor. But the bullets disintegrated on impact by the electricity arcs.
"It's nice to chat, but I gotta run!" Connor shouted as he ran towards the entrance.
Halt!" Wang was at the entrance as he pointed his weapon. Connor sees this and quickly ducks down and grabs Wang's arm. Sending strong electric currents through the soldier's body, causing him to shout in pain and drop the rifle.
"Wang!" Damion yelled as he fired a round, striking Connor in the side. Connor winched, but didn't falter as he picked up Wang and hurled him towards Damion and Chris before darting out the door.
Moments later, a few bangs are heard and smoke quickly fills the street outside. There was screaming from bystanders as smokescreen filled the narrow street. The Delta Force snipers outside found their rooftop view negated. "Smokescreen... switch to thermal!" Onyx 0-1 told his sniper. Connor darted his way through the smoke-filled streets.
"Damion, secure the area!" Chris ordered as he jumped into action as Captain America II and grabbed Wang's rifle. He then proceeded to head outside to track down the war criminal.
"Howler 7-1 Actual in pursuit! Onyx 0-1, I need a sitrep on the HVT!"
"We have him on thermal," Onyx 0-1 reported, "too fast for a shot, but he is moving north of your position."
"Roger, don't lose him!" Captain America II said as he ran past several stunned bystanders. "Ugokashite (move)!" He yelled. As he advanced forward, the smoke continued to be produced by the deployed smokescreen canisters. "Onyx 0-1, do we have authorized air support available?"
"Negative, Captain," was the reply, "no air support available at this time."
Captain America II groaned, it was the last thing he needed to hear. "Roger, keep me updated!" He continued running past stunned bystanders while many are fleeing from the chaos. Which makes it harder for him to keep chase. However, he had some super-stamina and speed on his side.
He continued shouting orders to move out of the way. He burst through the smoke, glancing the fugitive Connor taking a sharp left. "Halt, Connor!"
Captain America II continued his chase with his rifle armed. It also helped that there was a blood trail that Connor was leaving behind. 'Good shooting, Specialist Burton,' Chris thought. He dashed through alleys and tight corners, continued to trail Connor.
Back at the Dicey Café:
"Wang!" Jenson crawled up as Damion worked to revive their friend. He lied on the floor unconscious from the electric shock.
"Breathe, come on!" Damion was performing CPR on his fallen soldier friend.
Asuna lowered the energy shield she had produced. Nijika peaked out from cover.
"Come on! Dammit!" Damion swore in desperation as he sped up more vigorously.
Kazuto's eyes widened as he saw this and pried Damion off with his own strength. "Stop it, you'll kill him!"
"I can't let him die!" Damion yelled as he struggled against Kazuto's hold.
"Maybe I can help..." A voice said. Kazuto and Damion turned to see a man in his late-twenties, but his face is obscured by the hood he's wearing with his jacket.
Schwartz held out his left palm while holding his rifle. "Hey, you need to back off."
"I can help.." The young man explained. "Your friend isn't going to make it.."
"We have QRFs for this," Schwartz argued.
It was then, the young man raised his right hand and waved slowly. "You must let me help..."
Schwartz was about to tell him off... However, he felt something telling him that he should let the stranger help. He then replied. "I... I must let you help..."
Asuna noticed this. As Schwartz allow the stranger near Wang and knelt down. He took a deep breath and held his hands over Wang's chest. He seemed to be concentrating.
"Hey," Damion saw the stranger lean over Wang, "what are you doing?"
"Damion-kun. I think he's helping Wang." Asuna called out.
Jenson suddenly aimed his rifle, not trusting the stranger. "He'd better. If this is a trick, I'll shoot you where you stand!"
The stranger didn't respond to the blunt remark, his eyes remained closed as he concentrating and kept his hands steady over Wang's chest.
"Heal..." The stranger felt Wang's heart started beating. It was slow at first..
"Heal...."
Wang gasped awake as his heart was jumping with beats. Followed by hard coughs, but he was breathing again in deep gasps.
"He's alive," Tim gasped.
"He's healed him." Keiko added, she was also surprised. Kazuto and Damion stood stunned at what they had seen. The electric shock that Wang suffered seems to have disappeared. As if it never happened.
The stranger then worked on healing Wang's electric burns on his skin. Kazuto, Asuna, Damion and everyone watched the burns disappearing before them.
The stranger finished, and stood up.
"Thank you very much.." Asuna thanked the stranger with a bow.
The stranger looked deep into Asuna's eyes from under his hood. "You're welcome... Asuna Kirigaya..."
Damion then walked up to the stranger. "Identify yourself." He held his pistol, but did not aim it. "I'm grateful that you saved my friend, but who are you?"
The stranger removed the hood to reveal fair skin and short, brown hair. He also sported brown eyes. "Everyone calls me Glenn Matthews..."
"An American," Kazuto muttered.
Damion nodded as he slowly holsters his pistol. "Thank you, Mr. Matthews..."
Janson and Schwartz attended Wang. "Come on, buddy..."
"What hit me..?" Wang groaned.
That Connor guy electrocuted you and tossed you towards us." Damion replied. "And Matthews here brought you back from the brink of death." He gestures towards the stranger.
"Wait... where are you pointing to?" Wang questioned. Damion looked where he pointed, and found that Matthews had disappeared.
"Where did he go?" Damion was puzzled. "Did anyone see him leave?"
Kazuto and Asuna saw most of their friends were still behind cover.
"No idea, Damion..." Asuna shook her head. "First he was there; the next, he's gone..."
Jenson helped Wang up with Schwartz's help. Damion pulled up one of the chairs and sat him down on it.
"Hang in there, you're okay now."
Wang felt himself recovering his strength a bit faster. The pain he felt grew dull until it disappeared completely.
Alex and Suguha peaked out from behind cover. The whole event was terrifying and they were fortunate to be protected by Asuna's energy shield barrier and kept them and the others safe. Suguha looked around and saw that the café is trashed.
"Oh man..." Alex groaned. "My folks are going to find this hard to believe...and what will Andrew say to this?"
Randy observed the aftermath of the café. "Well... The damage isn't too bad. Apart from a few chairs and a table. And a few lights. The rest is intact. Plus, no one got hurt..."
He then turned his attention to Wang. "Well... Almost no one..."
"Very funny, kid.." Wang groaned. "You haven't been playing around with wall electric sockets. Where's my rifle?"
"The Captain took it when you went down and chased after him." Damion explained.
Kazuto and Asuna looked out the windows, anxious for the sponsor and new leader...
Meanwhile:
Chris rolled out of the way of an electric arc as he fired two return shots towards the rogue Marine.
"Civilians present, watch your fire," Onyx 0-1 cautioned.
"Affirmative, just give me whatever sniper support you can, please," Chris bluntly replied.
"We'll do the best we can, Howler 7-1 Actual..."
"Now, please," Chris said firmly as he continued the chase, this time through traffic. The blood trail he's been following had ceased when he reached the end of the alley. However, the Texas hunter and tracker would not be deterred. He scanned the crowd to find any traces of Connor.
He then examined the walls of the alley... there were fresh scorch marks. Made by electric currents and discharges.
'Where are you?' Chris thought as he continued scanning the crowd. He checked the asphalt, and saw that there were the same scorch markings... hints of potential instability. More likely Connor's metahuman powers kicked in and he used them to make a quick escape.
'But not fast enough!' Chris kicked his pursuit back into gear, using his enhanced sight and years of hunting experience to weave through surprised civilians. At last, he finally spotted Connor darting and ducking behind crowds of people.
Chris leapt after him like a silent predator. However, his attempt at stealth was being undermined by the exclamations and gasps of the Japanese around him. Connor quickly became aware and he bolted towards the street, hoping to lose him with oncoming traffic.
He reached for a talkie in his jacket. "HVT's making a break for the street!" He had swiped the radio off that soldier he beat. Then he sees Connor jumping onto one of the cars, the jump was much higher than he expected.
'Intel never told us about his acquiring powers,' Chris thought as he ran after him, 'either they dropped the ball, or Anacostia is not telling us everything...'
The traffic itself was gridlocked. So, navigating through it wouldn't be difficult.
"Connor Morgan!" He called out, "stop running and surrender! Don't make me shoot you!"
But Connor continued darting through traffic, jumping on top of car roofs.
"Darn it..." Chris raised his rifle and fired at Connor in midair, causing crowds to scream and scatter. Cars screeched as they broke hard from the sight of two Americans shooting at each other. Connor had jumped off one of the cars and took cover behind the bus.
Several people inside the bus panicked and tried to get out. Several did and managed to get out of the way. Chris ran up to the bus and hid across from where Connor was hiding. Slinging the rifle, he took out his M2011 to minimize collateral. At that moment, he felt the air changing as if lightning was about to strike.
He jumped out of the way as the bus exploded. A electrical discharge that sent several abandoned cars flying in all directions.
"Connor, stop!" Chris demanded, but Connor shot a bolt at him. Suddenly, Chris raised his arm, and his signature shield deployed.
"Pacific Command don't have what it takes to win!" Connor shouted back as he shoots another bolt. "They chose to relax while we suffered!!"
"No... you did that all yourself!" Chris yelled as he pushed back on the force of the attacks with his shield. "You're out of control, and we're going to stop you!" Chris willed a port into his shield and shot through it.
"Like how your superiors tried to stop young Mitchell?!" Connor retorted as he ducked behind cover. Chris did not respond as he held his shield up. He wished he had his flashbangs and stun.
Connor continues. "It's not wise for Command and the JAGs to try to throw him to the wolves! Especially after he and his friends vouched for you back in January!"
Chris knew what Connor was talking about, but his advanced officer training told him that this was psychological warfare.
"And your superiors tried to forget what Nobuyuki did to him and his friends! As if they're trying to recruit that madman in secret!" Connor threw another bolt at Chris.
However, Chris did not respond, except to fire more shots as he rushed with his shield.
"Very well, then! I guess we'll be looking forward for a repeat of ALO!" Connor charged another energy surge before jumping forward and slamming his fist into the ground. Sending another electric shockwave that sent the overturned cars flying again.
Chris ducked under one and used his super-strength to bash another aside with his shield. "You don't get to talk after all the Americans you killed."
"You mean the traitors that allowed America to grow weak while the GEC grew strong?!" Connor questioned. "You of all people should know that!"
Chris suddenly flipped over one of the flying cars and landed next to a manhole cover, picking it up and flinging it hard at Connor, narrowly striking his head and leaving a bloody gash. "You made yourself judge and executioner," Chris bluntly replied.
Connor just chuckled as he observed the blood on his fingers. "Correction: They made us the judge and executioner.. Our hand was forced.."
A gunshot sounded, striking Connor in the shoulder and sending him tumbling. "Onyx 0-2, shot out."
Connor groaned as he clutched his shoulder and tried to stand up.
"Target down."
"Negative, Onyx 0-2," Captain America II cautioned, "keep that gunsight on him."
Connor cursed under his breath as he tried to crawl behind one of the wreckage. Only to be stopped when a bullet impacted the pavement a few inches from him arm. Then another shot forced him back.
"Surrender Connor before we kill you," Chris warned as he trained his rifle on him.
Connor chuckled. "You'd think I came here alone?"
Captain's sixth sense warned him of an incoming object. He barely rolled out of the way of a speeding car. Followed by a armored van as it plowed one of the toppled cars out of the way and popping smoke as the side doors opened up and gunshots erupted from within.
"It's the Knights..." Chris grunted as he was now taking fire to his shield.
"Until next time, Captain America!" Connor shouted as he is helped up and quickly escorted to the armored van. However, several gunmen continued to advance on the Captain as he took cover to reassess. That was until they came under fire by Onyx 0-2, the Knights quickly ducked behind cover.
It was then that a shot came from another direction. "Onyx 0-1, moving to assist."
Chris peeked up, and saw three Delta Force operators rain fire down on the enemy.
Sensing a chance, Chris reloaded his rifle and leapt out. Connor was already inside the van. Chris raised his rifle, but was forced on the defensive with his shield as enemy fire came his way.
Moments later, the Knights begin to retreat and climb back into the van. Chris fired some return shots, but the van's armored side deflected the 5.56mm rounds. The speeding sports car that nearly hit Chris swung around and sped towards him again.
However, a blast from the sky struck the engine block. The car spun and flipped over across the street and crashed into one of the wrecked cars. Seeing the arc blast, Captain America II did not need to look up. "You're late, Lieutenant."
"Sorry, Captain." Iron Man II apologized as he landed. "I was held up at base. And when I heard about what was happening, I rushed here as fast as I could. What the heck happened?"
"Connor Morgan and the New Knights showed up." Chris said bluntly.
Chris could sense his adjutant stiffen and tense inside his armor. Of course Jack Preston would. The armored Marine turned Ranger clenched his metal fist.
"Connor was here?" Preston's voice turned hard.
"He was..." Chris replied. "Don't know what his plans are. But I believe they involved Kazuto, Asuna, and their friends.."
Preston was now angry. "If I had heard about him sooner..."
"There's more..." Chris interrupted. "Connor appears to be a metahuman, he managed to escape captivity..."
"What?" Preston questioned. However, the two were interrupted by the Tokyo Metro Police and Special Assault Team responding on the scene.
"I guess we'll figure it out later..." Preston sighed. The police aimed their guns at Captain America II and Iron Man II as they tried to assess the situation.
"Stand down," it was Inspector Minetaka who ordered the officers to cool it, "let's all lower our weapons."
The officers glanced towards Minetaka and slowly lowered their weapons. Chris recognized Suguha's father in his police uniform. The inspector shook his head. "Hello again, Captain... I see you were hard at work in the middle of our city."
"Inspector Minetaka..." Chris greeted. "We were chasing a war criminal... But he got away... Sorry for the mess."
"Name of the suspect?" Minetaka asked.
"Connor Morgan," Chris answered. "He and the Knights are present here in Japan."
Minetaka took out his police phone. He searched the records from Japan's immigration authorities.
"He went with an alias, Todd Wainio." Chris added.
"Todd Wainio... ah yes," Minetaka responded, "flagged for investigation into possible illegal immigration and identity fraud."
"No doubt trying to set up a base of operations here." Preston groaned. "Not to mentioned still raging against anyone who didn't participate in the war..."
"Bastard never learned to stop fighting." Preston added. "Not to mentioned the punishment actions he and his faction inflicted."
Minetaka frowned. "So yet another leftover from your civil war. I will have to inform my supervisors with this new information to get warrants on him." He then looked over to the trashed and smoking sports car. The driver inside appeared to be alive as he was still moving about trying to get out.
"Have SAT check the car and get him out," Minetaka advised. The officers acknowledged the order and began to remove one of the car doors. However, the door window shattered as bullets ripped through from within. The SAT operatives opened up with their MP5s in response.
Moments later, the firefight ceased. Chris and Preston frowned at the outcome as their one possible lead went up in a hail of bullets.
"Anybody hurt!?" Minetaka asked his officers.
"Just some bullet grazes, Inspector. But we'll live.." One officer winched as he checked the bullet grazes on his arms and legs.
"Treat those wounds immediately and stop any bleeding," Minetaka advised, "we'll get them fully stitched at a hospital." His experience with gunshot injuries proved invaluable with a police force not typically experienced with violent armed crime.
The officer was then guided to the patrol cars, where they began treating his wounds. Meanwhile, Preston scanned the overturned sports car for any clues. He ripped the driver door off, letting the body fall out.
'He won't be telling us anything now...' Preston thought bitterly. 'And another day of Connor running free...'
Back to the Café:
Damion knew that he and Captain America were going to answer for the mess. He also knew enough euphemisms to understand that Defense Intelligence had made a request to Captain America to have Connor apprehended. This setback was bound to have some repercussions.
Kikuoka had already stepped out from the restrooms to see the damage. "Someone did a number on this place..."
He then glanced towards Kazuto, Asuna, and their friends. "At least no one got harmed..."
Asuna and Kazuto helped with Wang as the rest of the squad moved to secure the area. Meanwhile, Kikuoka continued to inspect the damage done to the café. Other than some scorch marks, it was surprising that it was not worse.
Trish herself came out from the kitchen to see the damage as well. "It is over?" She rubbed her cheeks at the burn damage sustained.
"It is, ma'am.." Damion replied. "But the target got away... and he made a mess of the place."
Trish just sighed. She then realized what Captain Burke meant earlier. She thought of how the young officer still managed to pull off being the concerned gentleman in a violent and brutal line of work. But at least she's gotten the extra pay to fix any damages.
'Just a few broken chairs, two tables, and scorched walls and ceiling..' Trish thought. It was a miracle that no one appeared to be killed, and the café for the most part suffered only superficial damage.
Meanwhile, Kazuto and Asuna continued to tend to their friends and the soldiers. Asuna was given a medical kit to tend to Wang. While it wasn't necessary as much of his wounds have healed. As such tended to the scratches, bruises, and sprains that the others could have sustained in the attack.
"And that's the last of the scratches.." Asuna said as she placed the bandage over it.
Jenson smirked. "Did someone ever tell you that you've got an angel's touch?"
Asuna nodded and said. "That would be my Kazuto.." She smiled before giving her husband a hug. Kazuto gave a triumphant smirk towards Jenson.
Jenson chuckled. "Good to hear... Now that everyone has a clean bill of health..."
"Agil... Andrew is going to kill us," Alex groaned.
Suguha noticed this and reassures him. "Not if we explain what happened..."
"I already told him," Trish sighed, "we keep an emergency hotline between the both of us, given the threats he receives as an SAO and ALO survivor."
"Thank you, Trish-san.." Sugu bowed slightly. The last thing she wanted was for her and her friends be banned from their hangout place in the Real World.
Trish on the other hand, frowned to herself. There just seemed to be something else behind her husband's extended absence, and the stiff tone in his reply. While Andrew didn't give any full details other than overseeing the second Dicey Café, she felt there's something else behind it. Her martial sixth sense just knew.
In the meantime, Trish will have to handle the Café business for the time being.
Asuna looked around, and crossed her arms, her posture showing that she was determined to do something. During this time, Randy looked up the New Knights of America and explained the details to everyone. The New Knights of America was created in late-2017 to early-2018 to counter with the Blue Cosmos that was growing dominate in the West Coast. But as time went by, the Knights resorted to violent tactics in dealing with the Blue Cosmos. They've gotten in trouble with the law due to their promotion of violence towards anyone siding with Globalism. This also included government agencies such as the FBI.
Some of them taken odd jobs of smuggling contraband past checkpoints in state governments that were loyal to the US government. Mainly technology from Anderson Tech Industries. They also spread through several states towards the East. While Anderson Tech's American Rangers was the dominate Militia faction, the New Knights came a close second.
On May 31st, when the Federal agents and UN Peacekeepers attempted to arrest Thomas Anderson in Frankville, the New Knights staged a daring rescue of their leader, Connor Morgan from the FBI facility in San Francisco. They've succeeded of rescuing him, but left casualties at the facility. And days later, when the West Coast and Northeast seceded from the Union, the New Knights began waging a guerilla warfare against Pacifica and the New England Separatists.
But of course, the Knight's tactics grew more and more violent in responses to the atrocities Pacifica and the Blue Cosmos committed. When questioned by the Free States, the Knights defended their actions as necessary. After the end of the war and the signing of the Treaty of Restoration of the Union... it only went further downhill. The Knights continued their war against not only Pacifican Remnants, but those who have stood by while America suffered from the atrocities.
Randy then revealed how Chris Burke was personally assigned by the US government to lead soldiers and marines to dissuade and disarm this militia.
"They thought that Captain Burke showing a strong and respectable show of force would be enough to stop the Knights without further bloodshed," Randy said, "but you heard him mention Medford."
"We have..." Asuna nodded. "The incident that occurred sometime after the war..."
"It was a disaster that was waiting to happen," Nathan added, "the negotiations between the military and the Knights that were supposed to take place failed before Burke could even start them."
"Burke-taichou also mentioned Jacobs." Kazuto said. "Must have been one of those Marines."
"He was...." Nathan nodded. "Robert Jacobs used to be part of the Free States militia during the Pacifican occupation. After much of the states were liberated, he was reinstated into the US Marines... And he was among those assigned to Burke's command to reign in the Knights."
"Which of course, had failed..." Randy finished.
"What was Medford? What happened there?" Keiko asked.
"Yeah, most of the details are fuzzy to most of us.." Kotone added, she was curious herself.
"Medford, Oregon," Alex said, "it was a town that was the very site of the Reunion Treaty signing between the US Army and repentant generals of the Pacific states." Alex continued. "However, the Knights see the treaty as an 'act of betrayal' and they staged an attack on the town's city hall.."
He looked to the emblem of the 7th Platoon on Damion's shoulder. "Chris Burke and his Rangers were alerted to the attack, and as such was ordered to assemble all of the soldiers and Marines available in southern Oregon and northern California to confront the militia and stop the sacking of the city."
"And, from what I've read, Preston was also there..." Alex added. "This was before he took the Iron Man title.. He and Connor used to be best friends. The same with Robert Jacobs. From what Preston reported, he and Jacobs were stationed in New York City. Even grew up on the same streets together..."
"He, Jacobs and Connor have met during their training. And while Connor was stationed out West, Preston and Jacobs remained in the East Coast."
Damion could not help but hear this... Captain Burke never talked about this particular incident very much, among many other things that he just kept very quiet about. Even Preston never talked about the incident either. But if so, then this Connor Morgan has a lot to answer for his actions. Especially after what he tried to kill Wang.
"But back to Medford," Alex said, "Chris Burke and his troops rushed into Medford, and he gave warning to the New Knights that they were in violation of the Treaty and that they were to stop the revenge killings, or be labeled as enemies of the peace they had fought hard to win."
"And we all know how that went..." Alex added grimly.
"Medford was badly burned," Randy added, "and it was the worst loss of life in a single night in the post-war aftermath that nearly undid the peace."
"Even after Pacifica was defeated..." Mace agreed. "That incident almost reignited the war... 61 servicemen and 913 citizens were killed by Connor and his Knights that night, and half the survivors of the city were injured and displaced."
Kotone, Rika and the others were stunned. They've heard stories of the atrocities committed during the war. But one during peacetime, even after the war ended...
"So how was it saved?" Kotone asked.
Damion then looked down. Now this one he knew. "Through a lot more sacrifice. They hunted the New Knights relentlessly to bring justice for Medford. But as you can guess, most of them got away..."
"I don't understand why they would resort to that kind of violence " Momiji interjected. "I know that the war was horrible. But still..."
"It's about what happened in 2016 during the presidential elections in America.." Kenji explained.
Randy nodded. "That's right, everyone was rallying behind John Henry Campbell in hopes of making changes to the Sokovia Accords for both sides to agree. As well as restore the Avengers and bring hope to not just the American people, but the world..."
Randy paused before he continued. "But as you know that the old US government saw him and his allies as threats. So, they successfully assassinated Campbell and held his running mate, Bruce Wilson, on false charges while the incumbent Matthew Ellis won in a sham landside. One could imagine the shock and outrage people felt in the aftermath..."
"And it's no doubt that this Connor Morgan, and many others became enraged... They've banked on Campbell to win and his murder had sent them over the edge and have founded the New Knights in response..." Randy finishes. "And waged war not towards the Blue Cosmos, but anyone who had affiliation with the old US government and the GEC..."
"I can see why President Wilson would have deemed them a renegade group," Kazuto grimaced. "Even after everything that happened."
It was then that Damion's radio buzzed. "Foxtrot 1, Howler 7-1 Actual," it was Captain America, "sitrep."
Damion reached for his earpiece and replied. "Howler 7-1 Actual, this is Foxtrot 1. Private Wang is stabilized."
"Roger, medivac is enroute. Secure the area and secure both my charges."
"Affirmative, Howler 7-1 Actual. Foxtrot 1 out."
Kotone noticed that Damion had not mentioned or reported the stranger Matthews. Either there's no point of mentioned his involvement or it's something that he'd report in person.
"Damion?"
"Kazuto, Asuna, continue to tend to the injured. Captain Burke is en route to the Café."
The young Kirigayas acknowledged and continued checking with the other patrons. The two helped an older man who had been thrown against a table.
"This is the craziest I've seen lately.." The older man muttered. "Ohh.... My head..."
"It's alright, sir.." Asuna said as she applied gauze to the wound on his forehead. "You have a bad bleed there. Just hold still."
The older man remained still as Asuna took out out the surgical tape. "This should hold until you get to a hospital."
The old man looked to Asuna and Kazuto in their uniforms with a hollow look of sadness. "Even our young women are not spared this time."
Asuna wasn't sure how to respond to this remark, but she continued tending to the other injuries.
Meanwhile, Kazuto tended to a young man in his mid-twenties who suffered some scraps on his arm and shoulder.
"Uuuuhh, my arm..." The young man groaned. Kazuto was bandaging up the scraps. They weren't too bad, but he knew better than to leave them untreated.
"Don't worry, we've got you," Kazuto said, "and the Captain's gone after the man who did this."
"I hope so..." The man groaned, rubbing his bandaged shoulder.
It was then that the Captain and Iron Man appeared back at the scene. Damion immediately addressed, "area secure, sir."
"Very good, Specialist." Captain acknowledged. He then turned to his two young JATUSA trainees. "You both alright?"
"We are, sir." Asuna replied. "We've just finished patching up the last of the injured."
"We're alright here, none of us are injured too bad," Kazuto reported.
"Glad to see you both safe, Private Kirigaya," Chris said. It was then that the old man's eyes widened.
"Wait, Kirigaya? As in Kazuto Kirigaya?!"
Kazuto was surprised from the sudden interest from the old man who Asuna helped. "And your name, sir?" He asked.
"T-that's not important," the old man said, "please come close!"
Kazuto leaned in, curious of what the older man wanted to say. The old man seemed to marvel at Kazuto, despite the pain in his head as he raised a hand. "You look so much like the Admiral..."
"The Admiral?" Kazuto was puzzled by this statement.
"He..." the old man suddenly grunted as his right hand shot towards his arm. Realizing what was about to happen to him, he reached into his pocket. Kazuto watched as the old man pulled something out of his pocket and handed it to him.
"Serve... as he served... our emperor..." the old man gasped as he faded and collapsed.
Moments later, Kazuto called out for a defibrillator. "Help! This man's had a stroke!"
Damion quickly approached the older man. "Oh great!"
"Lieutenant," Chris prompted Preston. Who quickly approached the older man with his repulsors ready to revive him. Kazuto stumbled back a bit as the two American soldiers worked to save the old man. It was then that he looked down at the item he was given. He noticed that it was folded.
He thought of what the old man told him before he unfolded the item. It was then that something fell out with a metallic clinking sound. Kazuto was surprised to see that it was some sort of ornament... it was a blue-shaped 'X' with red radiating 'rays' and two golden swords crossed in the middle in the 'X'. Furthermore, there was a golden bird that the young man recognized as a Japanese kite at the top, suspended from a blue-green ribbon with two white stripes on opposite edges.
As Kazuto examined it, he realized what it was. 'The Order of the Golden Kite...'
It was an old military award of the old Imperial Japanese military. Established on February 12th, 1890, abolished in 1947 by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers after World War 2 ended. He then looked to the unfolded item in his hand, and saw it was an old polaroid photograph. An in the photograph is a young soldiers in an Imperial Japanese military officer's uniform, fitted with a Katana at his side.
Kazuto's eyes widened. It was a young man... with short hair, but his eyes and his face.
'He looked like.... like me...' He thought. Yet the eyes held a sharpness and intellect that was not Kazuto's... yet familiar somehow.
"Clear!" Preston discharged a electric charge into the old man's chest the second time. "Nothing!"
"Try again," Damion urged, ignoring rank for this moment.
Preston charges up his repulsors again. "Clear!" The third discharge shoots through. There was a jolt, but again no response. Preston prepares to charge up again.
"Clear!" A fourth discharge shoots through with a jolt. Still no response..
Captain America II came up and held up the man's wrist for a pulse. "He's dead."
Iron Man II powers down his repulsors, realizing the futile hope.
Suguha and Alex noticed Kazuto staring at both the photograph and the medal the man gave him.
"Why did he get them to Kazuto-niisan?" Sugu asked Alex. "And what is that award?"
"I think I've seen something like that before..." Alex whispered back.
"Kazuto," Asuna noticed as well. She glanced at the photo and the medal. "Did he... give them to you?"
Kazuto nodded. "He did..." He showed her the photo. "Look at this."
Asuna sees the photo of someone. But upon a second glance, she saw he was an officer for the Empire of Japan. "Who is that?"
Kazuto turned over the photo to see if the name was written down. There was a name, 'Kousuke', but the surname at the start was badly smeared and faded.
Asuna looked closer to the photo, taking in the details of the officer's appearance. "Wait... he looks like!"
"Me..." Kazuto finished.
"Private Kazuto and Private Asuna," Captain addressed, "we are moving out. We are cutting short the leave and returning to base."
"Understood, Captain.." Kazuto nodded with acknowledgement. He slipped the photograph and medal into his pocket.
"Bye, Kazuto-niisan, Asuna-nesan.." Sugu said. Deep down, she was sad to see them leave again. And it was on the heels of an abrupt and violent skirmish in this café.
"Bye, everyone. We'll see you when we can.." Asuna replied. Their friends said their farewells to Kazuto and Asuna as the Howlers left the café. As the soldiers stepped out, several police and SDF arrived. Many of whom are tending to the injured that were outside when Connor made his escape.
Kikuoka waved over an SDF officer. "The café is all yours."
The SDF officer acknowledged before he and the others headed on inside. Kazuto and Asuna took it all in with solemnness. They knew this Connor Morgan had to answer for this destruction he caused.
Kikuoka then noticed Kazuto looking particularly troubled, before the young man glanced in his direction. Perhaps the whole ordeal with Connor has shaken him and his friends. Dicey Café was known to be homily and safe, and the sudden violence was all the more jarring.
'I suppose Andrew and Trish will be making additions to security..' Kikuoka thought with sympathy. There was only so much that they could do with the law in Japan as is... and they were only permanent residents.
Perhaps.... He could help them start a private security. He'll have to conduct research on who qualifies and to ensure they're protected on legal grounds. 'There is increasing demand in the country... but it will take a while in Tokyo.' Japan was in a very strange place where many cities carried on as normal under the aegis of the Self-Defense Force apparatus, while the countryside and rural towns were being turned into battlefields and forward-operating bases for US Army and SDF Ranger units trying to find and eliminate Hydra cells in the region.
'I'll make a few phone calls when I get back..' Kikuoka thought.
Chris looked to his lieutenant. He hid it behind his armor, but it was clear that Preston was not his usual self. He was hiding his agitation and anger underneath his exterior. He took the death of Robert Jacobs personally. And his former best friend Connor, was not only still mad with bloodlust, but had also apparently gained abilities that only seemed to make his aggression worse.
And the Knights' presence in Japan had only complicated things as there's no telling if they too have metahumans in their ranks. Chris then thought about Kazuto and Asuna behind him. He tried to get them to join the Knights.
'Connor, you can't stop fighting your war.' He then thought about Alex. Connor tried to use psychological warfare. on him during their encounter. It was just like Connor, brilliant and dangerous. And there's a possibility that Connor had someone on the inside feeding him and the Knights information. He would have to alert Defense Intelligence immediately.
Chris, Kazuto, Asuna, and the others finally reached the MRAP convoy.
"Get in," Chris said as he opened a door on his truck. Kazuto and Asuna hopped in with Chris following in and closing the door. "Alright, let's go squad," Damion urged as Jenson and Schwartz helped Wang walk.
Moments later, everyone had climbed in the other MRAP. Before Captain America II climbed into his vehicle, he turned to Iron Man II, who was staring into the distance behind his mask. "Sir... when he shows his face again, I'll be the one to kill him myself. No quarter given."
Captain America II quickly responded. "You know we cannot simply do that. We are the stepping stones for the future Avengers. So, we need to keep a clean record and can't go on any vigilante rampages.."
"Captain-" Iron Man tried to protest.
"We are soldiers, not revenge killers," Captain America stated firmly.
Iron Man remained silent for a moment before breathing a sigh. He knows he cannot challenge the Captain, not like this.
He turned away.
"Lieutenant, go back to base immediately for debriefing," Captain told him, "I will be back there in thirty mikes."
Iron Man glanced back. "Yes sir.." he acknowledged. He then pulsed up his thrusters, rising slowly before blasting off. Captain America watched his lieutenant soar away. Kazuto and Asuna watched Iron Man II leave towards the skies.
Captain America II then moved into the left-side driver seat, a contrast to the Japanese cars the two were used to. Kikuoka himself sat in the right side passenger seat.
Captain America then radios the other MRAPS. "This is Howler 7-1 Actual, we're ready to roll out."
"Copy that, 7-1 Actual." Damion radioed back. "Foxtrot in escort."
Moments later, the MRAP convoy begins to move. Leaving the café and heads back to base. Kazuto sat as the ride jolted slightly, with Asuna holding his hand.
"Kirito..."
Kazuto just pulled out the medal and photo again... relics of a different Japan. Back when it was an Empire. But Kazuto was more so pondering the officer in the photo... wearing the dark uniform of an imperial naval officer. And what the old man said to him before his heart attack took him away.
'Served... as he served...'
Those words stayed with him, even after they returned back to base. And this Kousuke character was at the center of the mystery.
