Before the line went dead, the last noise to come out was a loud thud that ended with an ominous period of silence.
And Poli knew something is happening to Lucky, due to the panic wavering in his voice over the comm. The police car ensured Amber to be by his side in case the Twilight Rescue Team's leader simply got a throbbing headache.
Poli hoped that was the case.
But what concerned him more is why Qin and Midnight, Lucky's adoptive siblings and members of the Twilight Rescue Team, are absent in their base. The electric car told Poli that he insisted to be alone and allowed his stepsiblings to handle any night emergencies and call him in case any of the missions get worse. The police car was about to question Lucky's decision, but the electric car refused to disclose his reason. Soon, it turned into an argument as Lucky tried to not lose his patience while Poli pressed him softly.
Suddenly, the sound of retching—
No, it's just a simple headache! Lucky has medical experience, so he can handle it until we get there. He's the leader of the Twilight Rescue Team, and I have my utmost faith in him.
Swerving right at a corner, Poli contacted Qin and Midnight to meet them at the entrance of the Twilight Rescue Team's base. Before Midnight asked why, Poli ordered that there is no time for questions and just head straight to their base immediately. He and Amber's sirens continued to blare as their speed begins to pick up, the very thought of Lucky's situation hanging over their heads.
Once the Broomstown rescue vehicles skidded to a halt in front of the Twilight Rescue Team's base, along with Qin and Midnight catching up to them seconds later, the four rescue vehicles transformed into rescue-ready robots and sprinted to the entrance. After directing Amber, Qin, and Midnight to stick behind him, Poli rapped on the door and pleaded for Lucky to come out. He paused and awaited the electric car's response, only to receive none in return a whole two minutes later. The police car tried again.
Nothing, once again.
Before Poli can perform a third attempt, Midnight allowed the police car to step aside and unveiled a device on their left arm. They spoke on it and a female robotic voice approved their message to unlock the door for the rescue vehicles.
Such futuristic tech!, Poli gaped.
Once the door unlocked with a click, Midnight allowed Poli to lead the team into the dark interior of the Twilight Rescue Team's base. The tram flicked on the lights, and Poli and Amber let out a whispery "woah" at the neon decor.
However, the room smelled unpleasant for the quartet.
As Qin equipped herself with an air freshener, Poli and the others stayed together and searched for Lucky across the base, while the spacecraft eliminated the rancid smell at every room the group goes to.
The search was cut short by a loud coughing fit two rooms to their left from the living room they're in.
As much as Poli and Amber wished to explore the base more, they and the Twilight Rescue Team have a colleague to assist.
When the quartet reached their location, which is the kitchen, it was a mess: fractured remains of chips were sprinkled on the floor, along with a bottle of oil rolling to a bar stool next to a kitchen island. As they rounded the island's corner, they saw their colleague standing on his arms and staring at a small pool of indigo-blue oil. Lucky vomited out the final batch of said liquid as he breathed heavily.
As soon as Poli spoke Lucky's name, the Twilight Rescue Team's leader spun his head towards the quartet as they froze in shock at the sight:
Instead of a painful look, Lucky's mouth is open wide like the crescent of a moon. Indigo-blue oil flooded from the bottom of his lower lip and stained his precious bow tie. To top it all off, his cyclopean eye defined the electric car's horrible state, and it was the same color as the oil.
Lucky smiled wide at his rescuers and raised a hand reassuringly.
"Don't worry guys, it's just a headache.", he darkly reverberated Poli's shattered hope.
