He was a loyal soldier, and yet his hands tucked behind his back were trembling.
“Are you,” Rampart said softly. “Are you really. What you are, clone, is a good shot and nothing more. You’re a tool, a piece of equipment,”
Perhaps. The silence built, flowing over him and Crosshair simply waited for whatever happened to happen, unable to think of any words to say and his shoulders slumped slightly and tiredly.
“And now I have a decision to make. Do I keep you in the squads you’re accustomed to and take the risk you’ll start obeying, or do I simply send you to the scientists now to ..,” Rampart paused, then smiled politely. “.. help,”
Two options lay in front of Crosshair. One kept his dignity but sent him into a mountain to become a test experiment for the rest of his life, the other offering him the life he was born for - the life he turned away from his brothers for - but at a price.
And all the time Rampart was watching him, waiting for his decision.
But in the end, what choice did he truly have?
