So Close to Love

Summary:

⚠️This story is still on going. Not yet completed.⚠️

The story starts where the movie ended. Maria and Robin are growing in their friendship. Maria discovers her responsibilities as the moon princess will be challenging, while Robin has to prepare to be the future leader of the De Noir clan; with each passing day, his responsibilities are growing. Even though Maria returned the pearls to the sea, it seemed as if something was missing. Something also seems off about the forest, it looks okay from afar, but the closer you come to it, the more you realize that something feels unnatural.

I do not own any of the characters in the book or movie. Examples of the characters I do not own would be Maria, Robin, Loveday, etc.

Maria's POV:

I had just saved the valley, and tomorrow Mr. De Noir will come manor to discuss peace. Wow, I thought I had just saved the whole valley, and now we will discuss peace between us! A few days ago, I didn't even think this was achievable.

Miss Heliotrope was walking beside Digweed, Loveday was beside Uncle Benjamin, Marmaduke was beside Wrolf, and I was beside Robin. Mr. De Noir returned on the lengthy journey to his castle because he could no longer wait to tell his clan of the sudden peace and told Robin that he would be okay to return to the castle alone since his horse was waiting around. Mr. De Noir would return the next day to discuss their peace terms. Everyone was talking. Even Marmaduke was on a magic frit talking to himself. Robin and I were the only ones who weren't talking. I was deep in my thoughts. I was trying to remember all that had just happened. After I fell into the water, it was all a blur up until coming back ashore on my white unicorn.

We were all heading back to the mansion. Marmaduke was planning to make supper for all of us, and since it was getting really late, Robin and Loveday would sleep in our extra rooms.

I started to feel slightly dizzy. It has only been a few minutes since I jumped off a cliff. I began to lose my balance. I closed my eyes, awaiting impact. Just as I was about to hit the ground, someone caught me. I looked up, and it was Robin. He had a sly smile and helped me back up to my feet. He laughed, "I believe that's enough falling down for you, princess." I gave a small laugh, still feeling uneasy on my feet, but I tried not to trip.

I studied Robin for a second. His curly brown hair, hat, leather clothes, and eyes, in a gaze, looked as if they were left wondering. Now that I think about he is pretty handsome. I thought about how I didn't notice that sooner, then remembered that I was trying to run for my life. I laughed, thinking about how that was just a few hours ago. I soon realized that I was staring and quickly looked away.

Robin's POV:

I was trying to make sense of everything that had happened. Just that morning, I was looking for Maria, ready to kidnap her, and now I feel like a piece of my heart had been ripped out and then carefully stitched back. Why did I think that way? Why was I the first one to reach the ledge when she jumped? Why did I scream her name when she jumped? Indeed Sir Benjimen or Mrs. Heliotrope would've been the first to get to the cliff's edge. Why me? Why did I care so much? All these questions filled my head, but my heart wouldn't give me all the answers, and my brain struggled to find the solution.

I snapped back into reality just in time to catch Maria right before she hit the ground. She was tense, and when I helped her back onto her feet, she struggled not to fall. Even though it felt like a long time from her fall in all reality, it was just a few minutes ago. I went back deep into my thoughts, trying to find the answers to all the questions running through my mind.

I snapped back into reality again when I heard a twig snap. It was just Wrolf running around by Marmaduke's side. That's when I started to take a good look at Maria: her beautiful long, curly red hair, sparkling brown eyes, and red dress. Then I quickly turned my head before she realized I was staring.

Maria's POV:

I was trying to find a way to start a conversation with him, so I asked, "So, Why did you help me?" It took him a second to understand what I had said.

He said, "Well, after getting trapped and keeping my promise to listen, it all started making sense."

Robin now turned to ask Maria a question, "Where is your mother? I know what happened to your dad. It must have been hard for you and her, but why didn't she come to Moonacre?"

I looked away real fast. It has always been hard for me to talk about my mother, especially when I know so little about her. I took a deep breath, turned my face, and concentrated on what was before me.

Knowing he awaited an answer, I said, "Umm, actually, she wasn't with us when my Father died. S-she, she died when I was just a baby." I focused on what was before me, knowing Robin carefully took every detail. "Before she died, she made Miss Heliotrope promise to take care of me and turn me into a true proper lady. That is why she came with me to Moonacre after my Father died because she hadn't broken her promise then and wasn't about to break it now." I waited for a second before continuing. "Sometimes I wish I could remember more about my mother and wonder if she would be proud of how far I've come." I knew Robin's eyes were still on me, and I turned my head as hot tears started running down my face. I missed her so much.

Soon I feel someone giving me a warm embrace from behind, whispering, "It's okay. I do not doubt that your mother would be proud of you. Look what you did just tonight. You saved the entire valley, Maria."

I sniffled and turned around as he let go, and I said, "Thank you for everything!"

"Of course, that's what friends are for." He said while wiping my tears away.

We continued to talk as we walked to the manor and all through dinner. During dinner, I discovered that Digweed and Miss Heliotrope were to get married sometime next year, but they had yet to come up with an exact date, the same with Uncle Benjamin and Loveday. Everyone was so excited!

After dinner, everyone thanked Marmaduke since he was able to make the most delicious meal they had ever tasted in such a short time.

Benjamin showed them where they would sleep, and he gave Robin some clothes while I gave Loveday some of my clothes that were too big on me. Everyone said good night and went to their rooms.

As I passed the painting of the first moon princess, I realized her face looked somewhat relieved but as if a part was still missing.

Was there something I had forgotten? I returned the pearls to the sea, and the families made peace. I don't know, but I'm sure it can wait until tomorrow. I had a long day and couldn't wait to go to bed.

I quickly bathed and put on my nightgown, and lay in bed. Even though I was utterly exhausted, I just couldn't fall asleep. The look that the first moon princess had kept popping up into my mind. Finally, after what felt like hours, I fell asleep.

When I woke up, I noticed that the sun was just rising. I soon realized that I wouldn't be able to fall back asleep. I decided to get dressed and head for the library, where I left the book Father had given me, which told the story of Moonacre. Hopefully, rereading it will help jog my memory and help me realize what else must be done to free Moonacre truly.

Robin's POV: I surprisingly slept well last night upon waking up before the sun. I tried laying in bed until more people were awake but soon lost patience. I got up, changed my clothes, and left my room to explore. I started walking around quietly, opening doors and seeing where they would lead. Most would be spare bedrooms, bathrooms, or closets.

I found a staircase leading upwards. I didn't even know that there was another floor. I quietly wandered upstairs. There wasn't much there other than another door. I opened it quietly to find a room almost empty with another door and a picture hanging up. It was of a lady who looked like Loveday, but I could tell that it wasn't precisely my sister.

There was another door, but it was tiny. I decided not to open that door but to head downstairs to continue wandering. I somehow found my way into the library. I was stunned by seeing all the books. They have a library back home but don't nearly have as many books. I looked around until I found a book that was short but long enough that everyone should be awake once I finished.

Maria's POV:

I walked out onto my balcony after getting dressed. The valley looked thriving, but thinking back to the look the first moon princess had given me, maybe not all things are how they appear to be. I may need to look closely into things, starting with rereading my book. I turned back around and quietly headed towards the library.

When I entered, I noticed someone asleep with a book in their hand. I caustically walked over to the person. It was Robin. What was he doing here? Should I wake him up? Well, he looks so peaceful. He was in the corner with a book falling out of his hand. He wasn't wearing his usual leather clothes. It was probably the clothes Uncle Benjamin had given him last night.

He still had his bowler's hat and his scarf on. I walked around him, wondering if I should wake him up. Well, everyone was going to wake up in only a few minutes anyway, so why not? I thought carefully about how I was going to do this. I carefully bent down, grabbed his hat, and slowly lifted it off his head. He opened his eyes, quickly grabbed his hat, and muttered with a small smile, "Oh, it's just you." Robin seemed half awake and sleepily put his hat on my head. He closed his eyes, yawned, and asked, "Is anyone else awake?"

"Not yet," I said, wondering why he did that. Then noticing my book, I quickly got it and started to flip through a few of the pages—trying to find the missing piece.

Robin's POV:

After a few minutes, I decided it was time to get up. I stood stretching, wondering when Maria woke up and why my hat was on her head. Before I asked, I remembered putting it on her. I noticed how concentrated Maria was on her book that I don't think she realized I was standing behind her, ready to scare her, when I saw the next page.

The book had a picture of all by the cliff. I think it was after she jumped, but how come it has that? Maybe it was a magic book. I wondered.

Maria's POV:

I saw the picture. It took me a second to realize that the next page wasn't blank. It had a picture of all of us by the cliff. I stood up fast, was about to show Robin, and almost backed up into him. He must have been right behind me the whole time. "Oh, I'm sorry I didn't realize you were behind me," I said, moving over.

"It's okay. I should've been paying attention. How do you think it has that in it?" He said, picking up the book. He flipped it over, studying it. "Do you think it might be magic?"

"Maybe. I'm not quite sure, though." I said while looking over his shoulder at the book. I heard some commotion. "I think it's time for breakfast. I'm going to get something to eat. Are you coming?"

"Yeah, anyways, my father should be here any minute to discuss peace," Robin said while setting down the book and grabbing his hat. Everyone was already eating when we walked in. We sat across from each other, listening to Digweed and Miss Heliotrope's and Uncle Benjimen and Loveday's wedding plans. Digweed and Mrs. Heliotrope will get married in the manor's garden. They wanted a simple wedding while Loveday and Uncle Benjimen would get married in Loveday's Father's castle, and Loveday was saying how she wanted it to be filled with pink geraniums and wanted to invite anyone and everyone. There was a loud knock on the door, probably Mr. De Noir coming to discuss the terms of peace.

"I'll get it," Digweed said, standing up from his chair and opening the door. "Hello, Mr. De Noir. Please come in."

"Hello, Digweed." Digweed brought Mr. De Noir into the dining room, where Mr. De Noir greeted us and eagerly sat down. Mr. De Noir mentioned how most of their clan agreed to the peace, but a few still needed to be more easily convinced that peace was the best way to go from it. The same goes for the people of the village. Most were happy that the rivalry would end, but a few weren't sure. They aren't anything to worry about, though.

He turned to me with a smile and said, "There are many people who are eager to meet the moon princess and were wondering when you could stop by so they could ask a few questions. Word spreads around fast in this small valley. But I doubt anyone expects you to go right now. You probably already have a lot on your mind." I smiled, and Mr. De Noir continued talking to Uncle Benjamen.

I wasn't expecting the whole valley to know in one night. It was all too soon; Mr. De Noir was correct. I needed at least a few days to process everything that had happened the night before.

I started getting really anxious about what did people expect from me. I am the moon princess now. Were there responsibilities that came with the title I would have to fulfill? Too many questions filled my head. I politely excused myself from the table and rushed outside. I grabbed Periwinkle and was about to take a ride through the forest.

Robin's POV:

My Father turned to me after Maria left the table. My Father spoke and said, "Robin, you know how I said that there were a few people who disagreed with the peace, but I said not to worry, well I only said not to worry too, Maria, because it was only last night since her fall, and she seems to have a lot on her mind. Where I'm getting to, anytime Maria goes to the village or the forest, make sure she isn't alone, go with her some people might want to hurt her but don't let it happen, she is the moon princess, and we need you to keep her out of harm's way. Do you understand?"

I eagerly got up, "Yes, I understand, Father." I didn't want her to go into the forest alone since she didn't know it as I did. She could easily get distracted and start wandering around, then get lost. I walked around the manor to the side and saw Maria preparing her horse.

Maria's POV:

I noticed Robin before stepping on my horse. His eyes looked slightly worried, but he smiled and asked, "Where are you going so soon?"

"I'm going for a ride to try and clear my head. Would you like to come? I'm sure Uncle wouldn't mind if you were to borrow his horse, Atlas." I said.

"I would be more than glad to come along, Princess." Robin gave a sly small.

"Don't call me that," I said while I rolled my eyes, feeling my face redden and the butterflies filling my stomach. I got Uncle's horse ready for Robin to ride.

"Hey," He said while raising his hands in the air. "You technically are a princess. You should get used to people calling you it from now on."

"Ugh, well, do we have to start now."

"Yes, it's the only way you'll get used to it," Robin said with a smirk. I rolled my eyes. As Robin jumped upon Uncle's horse, he said, "I've only ridden a horse once or twice before when I was younger, but I'm sure that it's nothing that I can't handle."

We headed to the forest. Robin is ahead of me. He looked tense, trying to make sure he wouldn't fall off. Robin seemed to be taking in every little landmark he could find. I guess he was doing that so that if anything happened, he would know where we were last. I trust Periwinkle and believe she doesn't need me to ensure she is following behind Robin.

I came out here to clear my head, but the picture of the first moon princess came into my mind, and I started to pay attention to the forest, and something felt off. Almost as if I am being watched. I made Periwinkle go faster, so now I am beside Robin. I looked at him, and it seemed like he realized it too.

"Robin, I think we should head back," I whispered. He nodded, and we turned around to see a group of people who didn't look nice. Robin hurried the Uncle's horse in front of me.

"Well, well, look who we have here, fellas. It's Robin and the Moon Princess. What a lovely sight to see. We were just talking about you, Moon Princess. I can't promise it was all kind things, though." He said with a laugh. I guess that he was their leader in a way.

"Will, can you please move out of the way? We will be heading back." Robin said. I could tell that he was trying his best not to be rude.

"Oh my, you'll must have the wrong idea." Will said while laughing, "Ya'll aren't leaving just yet." Will made a hand sign to someone, and more people emerged from the forest's shadows surrounding us. Panic set in my head. It was only the two of us and a lot of them. We had no place to go! I couldn't see Robin's face. It would be a lot easier if he just turned his head with an unworried expression or a reassuring look, but he hasn't yet, and I'm really starting to worry.

They all seemed to be waiting for something, maybe a signal from Will, as they surrounded our horses, keeping us from moving. Robin and Will were talking, but I couldn't hear them over my thoughts getting louder and louder.

Chapter Text

[title] [width]

I watched as they came closer and closer. They kept trying to calm our horses by saying things like, "Calm down, little horsy," or " It's okay. I'm not going to hurt you." The closer the people came, the more feisty Periwinkle became. It's like she could tell that these weren't people to trust.

Robin was still talking to Will. I tried to focus on what they were saying but couldn't because someone touched Periwinkle, and she started jumping. That's when I saw Will signal with his hand again. Someone put one hand around my mouth and, with their other hand, pulled me off of Periwinkle.

Periwinkle and Atlas make a run for it, leaving us behind. I tried kicking and screaming nothing seemed to work. I looked around, but I couldn't find Robin or Will! I tried calling Robin's name this time, kicking and hitting harder, and trying my best to get loose. I felt a sharp pain in my side. I hear a loud thud, and the person who wanted to kidnap me falls to the ground releasing their grip on me.

I scampered up, and I saw Robin. He pushed me out of the way just as someone was about to get me from behind. Then I see Wrolf racing towards us as quickly as he can.

All but five ran from the sight of Wrolf. Will was one of the five remaining, but he lingered behind everyone else. Will started yelling and winning at the others, but they stood there and watched Wrolf with fear.

Then when Will realized that they weren't going to move, he stomped his feet toward us, and Will started punching and kicking Robin, but Robin could carefully dodge them. Will looked like a small child having a temper tantrum.

I knew we couldn’t run for it because of my big cage dress. It would just delay us. I stood still, stunned, swallowing heaps of laughter until Will finally gave up since he had no backup as long as Wrolf was with us.

Will dashed away, face turning red as he murmured to himself, and after a few seconds, the remaining four started sprinting to catch up to Will. I had to admit it was so weird, and I felt like crying and laughing simultaneously. My body ached all over, but everyone's faces when they saw Wrolf were priceless. Then when Will tries to get us alone, it shows how helpless he is when alone.

I could have handled Will alone if it hadn't been that earlier. I put all the strength and effort left in my body to try to break out of the person's tight grip. Now it was just me, Robin, and Wrolf. Robin and I shared a look of bafflement before dying of laughter, but I felt a piercing pain every time I laughed. I couldn't tell where the pain originated, but I started getting light-headed. Everything started to spin. I took one step forward, and everything became dark.

Robin's POV:

Maria and I were laughing. She looked to be in pain. "Maria, are you alright? Maria? Maria!" She took a step forward and collapsed.

I hurried by her side Wrolf on her other side. I shook her, trying to wake her, but it didn't work. I started to feel apprehensive. I looked around, trying to see what we were near. The manor and the castle are too far away. Wait, Loveday's cave is nearby. I remember visiting her after Father had kicked her out.

It would be too challenging to carry her there. Wrolf started to try and lift her onto him. When that didn't work, he nudged me, and I realized he was willing to carry her on his back. I gently picked her up and laid her on Wrolf's back.

As we hurried to Loveday's cave, I prayed that she would be there and could help Maria. We walked through the entrance of her home. She was helping her snake. She looked up at Maria with a look of worry and confusion.

"What happened, Robin?" Loveday exclaimed as she hurried to get Maria off Wrolf's back and onto a chair. I explained everything from the second Father had arrived to discuss peace as she rushed around and looked for something. She got a rag and placed it under cool water. "Here, Robin, place this on Maria's forehead."

"Okay, how will this help her?" I said while gently placing the wet rag on her head.

"It should help her gain consciousness," Loveday said while looking for something else. I looked at Maria, and she was still unconscious. "It'll take a while, Robin, before she awakes. You'll just have to be patient."

"Yeah, but I just feel dreadful. I was supposed to protect Maria, and scarcely an hour in, and she is already unconscious! What will Maria think when she wakes up? What will Father or Sir Benjamin say?"

"Robin, you tried your best, and I'm sure Maria appreciates your help. As for Sir Benjamin and Father, who said they had to know of this little incident, we must tell them about William. Still, as long as Maria is fine, which she will be, we don't have to say about the attack. We can say William gave a few threats, and we might have to watch out for him. Everything will be fine, Robin. There is no need to fret."

I took a deep breath and said, "Okay, I trust you." I sat beside Maria, waiting for any sign that she was waking up.

"Good, do you remember where my garden is? I need you to get these few things."

"Yes, I remember," I said, standing up while Loveday handed me a list. Wrolf accompanied me to the garden.

Maria's POV:

I slowly opened my eyes. "Where am I?" I barely managed to say. Everything hurt for some reason. I felt as if I couldn't move.

"Oh Maria, you're awake!" I felt someone give me a big hug. It was Loveday. All the memories started flooding into my mind, and I started crying. It was all so overwhelming, and I was in so much pain. "It's okay. You will be alright." Loveday said while stroking my hair.

"Loveday, why am I in so much pain? Everything hurts." I managed to say. Loveday pulled away from the hug and sat down beside me.

"Well, when someone grabbed you off of Periwinkle, they might have tried to stab you, but it wasn't deep. I've already put some medicine on it to help prevent any infections and to help it heal faster. How bad is your pain right now?"

"Thank you, Loveday. It hurts a lot everywhere, but especially when I try to move. Where are Robin and Wrolf? Are they okay?" I said while looking around to see if they were there too.

"They are okay. Robin and Wrolf brought you here. I sent them to get me a few things from my garden. Here follow me, and let's change you out of those clothes." I looked down at my clothes and noticed blood all over them. Loveday got up and started to head to a room.

I tried to stand up but couldn't pull myself up. Loveday looked back, realized I couldn't get up, and hurriedly returned to help me. She put one of my arms around her neck and helped me walk to her room. Loveday put a dress on her bed for me to change into and gave me a bag to put my other clothes in. She said that she would be in the kitchen if I needed her. Loveday left and closed the door behind her so that I could change.

As I changed, I heard someone walk in and say, "Here, Loveday, I got everything from your garden. Where do you want me to put it?" It was Robin.

"Just over there would be fine. Where's Wrolf?" Loveday said.

"After I walked back through the entrance, he returned to the manor. Where did Maria go?" I laughed to myself. He didn't know that I was already awake yet.

"She woke up a few minutes ago and is in my room changing out of her clothes."

"Oh, okay. How is Maria doing?" Robin sounded really concerned, which surprised me in a way.

"She will be fine soon. She is hurting a lot though she can barely move, that poor thing. I figured out what caused her to pass out, though. It was because of a lack of blood. When the person pulled her off Periwinkle, I believe the person attempted to stab Maria, but the cut wasn't too deep but profound enough to cause her to bleed out. Which, after a bit, led her to lose consciousness. I was able to slow down and then stop her bleeding. I put some medicine on her wound to help prevent infections and heal it faster."

I just got my dress off. I remembered it was rude to eavesdrop, and I focused on getting this dress on while moving as little as possible. It wasn't very easy and took me quite some time, but finally, I was done. Now I have to open the door and walk back into Loveday's living room without falling or tripping. It can't be that hard, right?

I stepped forward and felt that my legs would give out on me. I took another step and another. I made it to the door without falling. I slowly opened it and closed it behind me. I took a few steps down the hallway holding onto the walls. Robin noticed me down and hurried by my side. He put my arm around his neck and helped me to the chair I had sat in.

"Thank you!" I said with a sigh of relief. Walking is getting more manageable, but it still proved difficult.

"Of course, Princess." Robin gave me a sly smile while I rolled my eyes and laughed. He sat in a nearby chair and started messing with some flowers in a vase beside him.

"Here, Maria, drink this tea. It should help you regain your strength." Loveday said while walking in. "Robin, leave those poor flowers alone." She said, laughing to herself.

"Thank you so much for everything, Loveday!" I said while sipping from the tea, already feeling much better.

"Of course, dear! I just remembered I must stop into town today to get a few things from the shops. Robin, will you go into the kitchen and make sure my new petite spider friend doesn't get into my things." Robin stood up and headed into the kitchen. "Maria, do you think you will be fine here alone for a little bit? Robin will only be in the next room if you need him."

"I'll be fine, Loveday. Be safe." I said while finishing my tea and setting it on a nearby table.

"Okay, I will, my dear," Loveday said as she got her coat and headed out.

[title] [width]

The pain started to become a bit more bearable. I could now tell that the pain was mostly coming from my side. Everything still hurts, but I can feel the difference in the pain. While my side has more intense, sharp, lingering pain, the pain in the rest of my body will disappear until I make the slightest movement. Then, my body will feel a shot of pain, and my arms and legs will become weak.

Just as I was about to fall asleep, I heard a yelp. It sounded like an animal calling for help. I jumped up and almost fell back, forgetting I was still hurt. The pain shot throughout my body. I stumbled back a little bit and steadied myself. I heard another yelp. This time it was louder. I had to help that poor animal.

I forgot about the pain and hurried to get to it and save it. I got outside and looked around, trying to find it, whatever it was. I saw the same trip I had found Serina in, but this time it was a helpless little puppy trapped. It looks like King Charles Spaniel, a boy. It's possibly only a few days old. I used to know someone who had one. The memories from my London days flashed back into my mind. I'm genuinely not the same girl that I once was. I heard a yell. It sounded like someone had yelled, "There you are!" I looked around but didn't see anyone. I listened to another cry, saying, "Got ya." I must be hearing things. I put my focus back on the puppy.

I got the little puppy, carried it back inside, and tried not to think of the pain. Once I got inside, I realized my hand was wet. Ugh, how disgusting. I looked at my hand, and it was red! Oh no! The puppy's leg is bleeding.

I hurried to the bathroom to wash the blood off the little pup's leg and my hand. Once I finished cleaning the blood off the pup's leg and my hand, I rushed to the kitchen, leaving the little dog lying on a towel. Loveday has to have a first ad kit somewhere.

I ultimately passed Robin forgetting he was here too. I opened and closed several cabinets to find the first ad kit.

Robin's POV:

Sitting here and watching a tiny spider move around is pretty dull. All it ever does is take a few steps forward, then take a few steps back. There is no reason for me to be watching it. I turned my attention to my thoughts and looked out of the small window, almost invisible to the outside world. I looked back at the little spider expecting it to still walk forward, then backward.

The spider is gone! "Where did it go?" I whispered to myself. I started looking everywhere. That little spider couldn't have gone that far. Something moved in the corner of my eye. "There you are!" I yelled to the spider.

Wait, where did it go? I saw it move. "Got ya!" I cried again while quickly picking up the spider in my hands. It kept on trying to get out of my hands. I got a container with little holes and slipped the tiny spider under it and on the table. As soon as I sat down, Maria came storming in. She walked right past me, opening and closing the cabinets.

"What are you looking for? How are you moving around? I thought it hurt to move. Are you already better?"

"No, of course not! I'm not already better. I feel like I'm about to collapse. It hurts so much. I found a small dog trapped. I brought it in, and his leg was covered in blood. I'm looking for the first ad kit. Are you going to help or just sit there looking baffled?"

"Oh, okay, alright. You seemed agitated, and I did not want to get in your way." I said, laughing while standing up. "Oh, you might want to look out for that thing," I said, pointing to the spider. "It's a tricky little thing, and I don't want it to escape again."

"Okay. I found it!" Maria said while holding up the first ad kit. "Wait, what do you mean again? Whatever, can you please help me."

"Sure thing, princess." I followed Maria into the bathroom where the hurt dog lay. I opened the first ad kit, disinfected it, and bandaged the wound while Maria kept the dog calm and stopped it from swarming around. "That should help with the bleeding. I've done all I know how. When Loveday returns, she'll know what else we might have to do, but you should be resting in the meantime." I said, standing up and offering a hand to help Maria.

She looked down at the dog and asked, "Should we leave him here? I feel so bad I got dog blood on one of Loveday's towels."

"It's okay. Loveday is used to it. She takes in a wounded creature every week, it seems." I laughed, and Maria slowly took my hand, and I helped her up. She seemed hesitant to leave it by itself. "Anyways, let's get you back to resting, and hopefully, you will start to feel better by the time you go home."

"Yeah, I rather not have to worry, Mrs. Heliotrope and Uncle Benjamin, even more, particularly after last night," Maria said as she sat back in the chair. I sat down beside her, forgetting about the spider.

"Out of inquisitiveness, did the fall hurt?" I asked, wondering.

"Well, it wasn't the fall itself that hurt. It was when I started to drown that really hurt me." Maria spoke softly.

"Oh, yeah, that makes sense," I said, lowering my voice just a bit because I noticed something out of the window move, but it was just a squirrel.

"Can I ask you a question?" Maria asked, still speaking softly.

"Sure, what's up, princess?"

"Why did you help me?"

"Umm, well, I promised to listen, and that's precisely what I did. The more you went on, the more sense it made, and I began worrying about my friends and family. I was willing to do practically anything to help you save the valley and everyone in it." I said, thinking back. It felt as if it had been quite some time ago.

"Thank you for helping me again today." Maria finally spoke up again after a few seconds had passed.

"Of course, princess," I paused momentarily before continuing, "how do you feel?"

"I'm feeling much better. I still feel a tad weak, but I'm gradually regaining my strength."

"That's wonderful! By tomorrow you probably won't feel a thing." I said happily. Maria and I continued talking until we heard a noise by the entrance.

"This thing!" Someone said, fussing. Maria quickly stood up to see who was by the entrance, but I rushed up before her. Someone walked in carrying a ginormous box, and I couldn't see who it was. Before I had a chance to think, the person said something.

"Robin dear, can you come into the living room for a moment to help me?" It was Loveday. I quickly took the enormous box from her hands and gently set it on the floor. "Oh, you are already here. Sorry if I started y'all." Loveday looked from me to Maria with a suspicious look in her eyes. After a moment, she hugged Maria and me and said, "Maria, starting to feel better, I presume."

"Oh, yes, Loveday. Thank you for everything you have done! Follow me, please I have something very important to show you." Maria took Loveday to the bathroom, and I followed behind. Still lying, there was the little pup, and Maria explained everything to Loveday. After Maria explained, she looked up at Loveday and asked, "Is there anything else you can do to help him? He seems to still be in a lot of pain."

"Of course, you did a remarkable thing, Maria. You saved his life! While I help this dog, Robin, can you help me by putting everything in the box in its rightful place?"

"Of course, Loveday. I'll get right on it!"

"Wait a few more seconds. I have to tell you where specific stuff goes. Maria, do you think you can help Robin? It's a lot, but I understand if you can't just yet." Loveday said, already getting things out of the bathroom cabinets that I guess she'll need.

"I'd be more than glad to help, Loveday!" Maria seemed excited to finally do something other than sit down.

"Okay then, Robin, Maria, follow me, please. She led us to the kitchen first, opened a cabinet on the far left of the wall, and said, "If you come across any food, it goes in here."

She opened another one on the far right and said, "This is for any kind of medicine you may find there." She grabbed some scissors and went into the living room.

Opening the box, she said, "If there are any clothes, they go into my closet. If anything else is in the box, hurry and put it into this chest. If you have any other questions, I'll be in the bathroom trying to help the little dog. Wait, Robin, you put my new spider friend back in his cage on the counter already, right? He has been trying to escape all day, but he recently hurt his leg, and the only way I can keep him from escaping and help him get better is if he is in his cage." Loveday laughed a little.

"Oh yes, of course, Loveday," I didn't actually. I waited until Loveday left the room and said, "I'll be right back to help you, princess."

"You didn't put it in its cage, did you," Maria said, laughing.

After several minutes of losing hide and seek to a spider, I finally found it. I put him in his cage and went to help Maria. She seemed to be very focused on what she was doing. She had almost finished too.

"So, what can I help with?" I asked.

"Just grab anything in there and put it up."

"Alrighty then," I said, and we both started laughing.

After a couple of minutes, we finished.

Maria walked over to where Loveday was and said, "Hey, Loveday, we finished putting everything up. Is there anything else you'd like us to do?"

"Umm, no, thank you, dear. Anyways you both should be heading back now. It's almost dark." Loveday said while looking out the window.

"Okay, thank you for everything, Loveday. I really appreciate it." Maria said while heading out. Loveday and I exchanged a smile, and I went to catch up to Maria.

"Wait," I said to Maria just before she was out. She looked confused. "I'm going to take you to the manor, but we must go a different path to avoid William or anyone else."

"Alright. Will it take long?" Maria said, looking up at the sky. It was going to be dark soon.

"Nope, we should get there before dark," I said, already heading to the path. Maria hurried to catch up. "Here, princess, let me help you," I said, offering to help her up a hill. I held out my hand.

"Umm, thank you. What should I tell Uncle Benjamin and Mrs. Heliotrope if they should ask why Atlas and Periwinkle returned but we didn't?" Maria looked up at me, awaiting my answer.

I looked ahead of me and started thinking about what I should say. I realized we already got over the hill, and I was still holding her hand. There was this weird feeling in my stomach that I didn't really like, and my heart started beating faster. I quickly let go.

"Umm, you should tell them that someone who didn't agree with the sudden peace scared off Atlas and Periwinkle, and while he did that, he also gave a few empty threats, but he shouldn't be anything to worry about," I said quickly, trying my best to ignore any weird feelings that mess with my head.

"Okay. I wouldn't want to worry anyone, especially after everything." Maria said softly. She sounded tired. Maria stopped walking and looked down. I followed her gaze. On the path, there were big animal tracks.

"What animal could have made that, Robin? Maria said, looking up at me once again. She seemed to be a little nervous.

"Umm, I think it's a bear, but as far as I know, we haven't had any bear encounters for years. Maybe there are bears in this part of the woods. Nobody goes out there, so it's not surprising that bears could be on this side of the forest." We continued walking.

"Why doesn't anyone go out there?" Maria asked.

"Well, it's forbidden. No one can go past the path we are walking on right here. Nobody other than my Father and I, oh and you now, of course, know about this path. Everyone else won't even come close to this side of the forest." Looking out at the other side of the forest. It looked darker than this side. All the trees seemed huddled together as if they had something to hide.

"Why is it forbidden, though?"

"I'm not quite sure. All I've ever heard since Father and I discovered this path is that no one is allowed past this path, and if I ever see anyone pass it, I have to tell Father immediately." I said. I looked back to the path. That place gives me the creeps.

"Hey, Robin."

"Yes, what's up?" I looked at her something seemed to be bothering her.

"Does something seem off about the forest to you? It's like the closer you come to it, the more you realize that something feels wrong or off about the forest." I thought for a second.

"Actually, yes, it does. I thought it was just me. I wonder why."

"Robin, look!" Maria said. The manor was finally coming into sight. I started hoping that this path would never end.

"Here, I'll walk you to the door," I said, trying to make the walk last as long as possible. Much to my surprise, I really enjoyed Maria's company.

"Are you sure? Wouldn't your Father be waiting?" Maria asked.

"It's alright. It wouldn't be the first time I've come home late. I'm sure my Father will understand." Maria nodded, and we headed up to the manor. Maria tried to open the door, but it was locked.

"How weird." I heard Maria whisper under her breath. I knocked on the door, and after a few seconds, Digweed opened the door.

"Hello, Miss Maria and Mr. Robin. Maria, dinner has just been served if you're hungry."

"Thank you, Digweed." Maria said. Maria walked in and stood by the door.

"Would you like to join us, Mr. Robin?" Digweed asked.

"Thank you, but I have to hurry and return home."

"Be safe out there," Digweed said. There was a crash somewhere in the house, and I heard someone getting mad at Wrolf. Digweed hurried to help with whatever happened.

"Bye, Robin. I had a lot of fun today! I hope to see you again soon." Maria said.

"Goodbye, Princess. I did as well! " I tipped my hat and said goodnight, and headed out.

Two weeks later...

Maria's POV:

It's been two weeks since the attack from Will. No one has heard anything else from him since then. I have resumed my lessons with Mrs. Heliotrope. Robin has also continued his lessons to be the heir of the De Noir Catle. After our lessons, we’d watch over a few of the animals Loveday rescues so she can go into the village or meet with Uncle Benjamin. They have already started talking about wedding preparations. Sometimes when Loveday didn't need us to babysit, Robin would show me the safest ways to get around in the forest.

It was morning, and I had just woken up. I got up and ate a few cookies the Marmaduke had laid out. I made my bed and got ready for the day. I put on a dress that Loveday had set out for me earlier this morning with flowers on top that matched the dress's light violet color. The dress was more of a flowy one which you don’t wear a cage with. I got an empty vase, filled it with water, and put the beautiful flowers into it.

I hurried downstairs to eat breakfast this morning. I got excused from lessons because Uncle Benjimen, Robin, Couer De Noir, and I will meet up with some of the villagers. Robin and I are coming along because the villagers have been waiting to meet me and ask me a few questions, and Robin's Father thinks it will be good for him to know what to do and how to act when he has to meet up with the villagers. I'm so excited but nervous at the same time.

"Good gracious, Maria! Slow down, child." I heard a voice behind me say. It was Mrs. Heliotrope.

"Sorry, Mrs. Heliotrope," I said, slowing down. When I sat down for breakfast, Mrs. Heliotrope and Uncle Benjamin wouldn't stop discussing and making plans for my upcoming birthday. I wasn't focused much because all I could think about was meeting the villagers. As soon as Uncle Benjamin and I finished breakfast, Digweed brought the carriage to the front of the manor. We were to meet Robin and his Father outside the village and ride in together. I looked out the window for the most part, taking the beautiful valley. To my surprise, Uncle Benjamin looked relaxed instead of very serious.

We met Robin and his Father outside the village. They were also riding in a stagecoach. Robin looked annoyed about something, but then he saw me, and his face lit up. We rode in, and after a few seconds, we stopped. Digweed opened the door and helped me out first, then Uncle Benjamin. Robin and his Father were getting out too.

We walked to the town square together. Uncle Benjamin and Mr. De Noir chatted amongst themselves. Then Uncle Benjamin turned to Robin and me and said, "Mr. De Noir and I were talking, and we want Maria, for you to stay with Robin and for you, Robin, to stay with Maria. No need for you both to split up. It would be harder to find both of you when were are leaving." Robin and I nodded, and Uncle Benjamin returned to talking to Mr. De Noir.

"So I heard that your birthday is coming," Robin said. I noticed some girls pointing at us, whispering. I started getting nervous.

"Yeah, I suppose it is."

"Well, shouldn't you be excited?" Robin asked.

"Birthdays have never really been a big deal to me. I've never really had anyone other than Mrs. Heliotrope to celebrate with me. Mrs. Heliotrope would bring a cake with candles; sometimes, if she could put aside some money that year, I'd get a gift."

"Oh, well, what about your Father?" Robin asked.

"He was usually deployed. He was never really home for birthdays or holidays." I said with a sigh.

"Oh, I'm so sorry," Robin said.

"It's fine. I'm okay." I said. We were now in the town square. Uncle Benjamin and Mr. De Noir started talking to some adults. A girl and boy walked up to us. They looked to be around our age.

"Hi, I'm Evelyn, but everyone calls me Eve, and this is my older brother, James," Eve said. James just gave a quick wave. He seemed to be shyer than his sister.

"I'm Maria," I said.

"And I'm Robin."

"We know who you both are. We have been so excited to meet you two!" Eve squealed out, which made me giggle. Robin started talking to James, and I began to speak to Eve.

"Everyone is so grateful to have a princess again finally and that there is peace once again in Moonacre," Eve said merrily, then continued, "The village has been having some problems that we need sorting out. It hasn't been easy for this town because the De Noirs and the Merryweathers have never been able to agree, but now we have our princess, who brought peace, and Robin, the heir to the De Noir Castle. The villagers want you and Robin to now be kind of in charge of Silverydew. You would oversee any changes we may want to make in the town."

"Wait, is that what's going to happen? No one has told me. Are those the roles of past moon princesses?" I asked. I'm so confused and upset that no one would think of telling me, but I'm sure that won't happen anytime soon. Uncle Benjamin and Mr. De Noir would probably want to stay in charge until we were old enough.

Eve laughed a little and said, "Well, no one knew. That is why my Mother and Father wanted to meet with all of y'all. We met with many villagers over the past few days, and almost all said the same thing."

"Oh, that makes sense."

"How about I show you around town? It shan't take long, and I could introduce you to some of the towns folk. Everyone has been eager to meet you." Eve said.

"Alright, as long as it doesn't take too long. Let's go!" I said excitedly.

We took a few steps forward before hearing two voices say, "Wait." It was Robin.

"Where do you two girls think you are going?" James asked.

We slowly turned around. "Oh, come on," I said under my breath.

"Can't we girls just have fun? I'm just going to show Maria around, that's all." Eve said, sounding a little annoyed.

"Maria, don't you remember what Sir Benjamin said about us sticking together?" Robin said with a smirk. I rolled my eyes. Oh, come on, I was hoping he would forget.

"Eve, don't you remember what Mother and Father said to us? I have to watch you." James said.

"Well, we won't go far. We are just going to say hi to a few people." Eve said.

"Also, the village isn't that big. We will just go around and come right back." I said.

"We will keep out of your way," James said. Eve and I both shook our heads. "Ugh, girls," James said under his breath.

Robin whispered something in James' ear and said, "Well, it looks useless."

"Fine," James said, giving up, "We will be here waiting for you both. You have an hour to come back, and if you aren't back within an hour, we will look for you both and bring you back here. If anyone asks where you both have been, we will say you went to the bathroom."

"Okay, thank you!" We said excitedly. We merrily walked away.

Robin's POV:

"So, will we follow them?" James asked.

"We have to wait a few seconds so we won't look too suspicious," I said as I watched the girls find their way through the crowds.

"What if we lose them?" James asked. He looked concerned.

"I'm an expert tracker. There is no need to worry." I said

"Okay, that's good because I've already lost sight of them," James said, laughing.

"They are stopped at a jewelry shop at the end of a street." I pointed at it, and after a few seconds, James saw them. "So we are going three shops down from where they are. From that, just follow me." I said, trying not to lose the girls.

"Alright, I'm right behind you," James said.

Maria's POV:

I followed Eve to a jewelry shop called Jules Jewelry. "Hello, Mrs. Jules. How are you doing today?" Eve said.

"Hello, Eve. It's always a good day when I see you!" Mrs. Jules said.

"This is Maria. Maria, Mrs. Jules, and Mrs. Jules, this is Maria. The moon princess."

Mrs. Jules gasped and said, "Moon princess, however, can I be of service?"

"Oh, thank you, but I'm meeting some people in the village. And please, call me Maria." I said. We all talked for a few minutes. I looked around at everyone and saw someone like Robin a few shops down. No, it can't be. He is back at towns square. Eve took me around all the shops in town. We have one last shop that Eve wants to take me to. We have fifteen minutes to get to the final shop, look around, talk to some people, then go back to Towns Square.

We got there in about two minutes. "This is my favorite shop!" Eve said. "It has all the latest fashion in London, Paris, and a few different places in Italy. Over there is the grocery part of the store, and over here are the books, and over here are the toys for kids, oh and over here is all the latest fashion in women's and men's clothing. Isn't this place so cool? Oh, on."

"What's wrong, Eve?" I said.

"It says that the owners won't be here today on a poster right here. I wish you could have met them. They are delightful people."

"It's okay. Maybe next time we'll see them."

"Yeah, hopefully. Anyways what do you think?" Eve said.

"I think that this is my new favorite store. Thank you for showing me around today!" I said. I'm happy that I was able to make a new friend today.

"Of course! Anything for my new friend!" Eve said cheerfully.

"I think we better head back before the boys rat us out," I laughed.

"Yeah, I think that's a good idea," Eve said. We barely made it out of the store before we were stopped by two guys who looked to be around our age.

"Hey, Eve." One said he seemed shy. I looked at Eve. She looked nervous as her face slowly reddened.

"Hi, Matthew," Eve said, speaking softly.

"I'm Edward, but everyone calls me Ed." I shock his hand.

"I'm Maria." We all continued talking, forgetting that we should have returned by now.

Robin's POV:

"Robin, is it time to go and get them? I don't like Eve talking to him."

"Why?" I asked, not paying much attention to what the girls were doing but watching everyone jump and squeal as a squirrel ran past everyone.

"He is just way too shy, and it's always awkward when he is around. He just gets on my nerves. Oh, hey, do you like Maria?"

"No, of course not. She is just a friend." I said, a little annoyed.

"So, then, you wouldn't care that Ed is talking to her."

"Ed, Ed, who?" I asked, turning my attention to Maria. I watched her. Why is she talking to him? How does she know that she can trust him? It made me sick mad, and annoyed. He looks like he is a full-of-himself, good-for-nothing type of guy.

"Why does it matter who he is?" James asked with a smirk on his face raising an eyebrow.

"Don't look at me like that. I don't like Maria like that. I'm supposed to keep her safe, and how do I know she can trust him?"

"Ed is someone who is known for getting all the girls. All the girls fall for him. I'm just lucky my sister has half a brain. He doesn't cheat, but every time he gets a girl, he will make her fall in love with him and break her heart. Oh, and he always gets the girl he wants. Right now, it looks like he wants your girl."

"She isn't my girl, James. Anyways, so he isn't someone to trust."

"Not yet, she isn't," James said with a smirk. Then continued, "I don't trust him, and he is known for being full of himself."

"That's good to know, and also, how often do I have to say that I don't like her in that way? Let's just go and get them," I said. I'll be more than happy once Maria is away from him. Not because I like her, though, but because he isn't someone to trust.

"Alright, I'll get you to admit it some other time," James said, laughing. I slapped his hat off his head. "Hey! Come on!" James said while bending over to pick up his hat.

Maria's POV:

I was still talking to Ed, and Eve was still talking to Matthew. I found out Ed's parents are the owners of Summer Moon. Ed is friendly and funny, but he only talks about himself and won't let me get a single word out. I would say we better be heading back, but Eve seems to enjoy talking to Matthew.

"Maria."

"Eve." It was James and Robin! Finally, I wasn't sure how much longer I could stand to listen to Ed go on and on about himself.

"Come on, you two, it's time to go back," James said. Robin looked really annoyed for some reason. Eve glared at her brother, but he just shrugged and started walking away.

"It was nice talking to you, Maria. I hope to see you again soon." Ed said while helping an older lady pick up her glasses that had fallen from her bag.

Robin rolled his eyes and said, "Maria, come on." He seemed angry.

I glanced at Robin briefly before looking back at Ed and saying, "Umm, s-same to you." I had to think for a second because the way Robin acted completely caught me off, guard.

When I went back to ask Robin why he was acting like that, I realized he had already walked away, and I couldn't tell where he was.

"Goodbye, Eve," Matthew said softly.

"Hope to see you soon, Matthew!" Eve said.

"Come on, Eve!" James said, starting to head back.

"I'm coming!" Eve said. She seemed to be annoyed with her brother. Eve and her brother were in front of me, bickering.

I noticed Robin he was slowly following behind Eve and James. I tried to catch up with him, but I couldn't. It seemed like the closer I got, the more people got in between us.

After a few minutes of trying to catch up, I gave up. I wondered if I had done something. He was acting so weird. I don't know. Maybe something happened when he was with James.

After trying to find our way, we were back at the town square. Uncle Benjamin and Mr. De Noir finished their long conversation with Eve and James' parents, and we said our goodbyes to Eve and James.

"Goodbye, Eve! I hope to see you again very soon." I said, hugging her.

"Bye, Maria!" Eve said. Robin and James just nodded as a way to say bye.

"Bye, James," I said.

"Goodbye, Maria." I shock his hand.

"Bye, Robin," Eve said. He nodded his head, and she shook his hand. I watched as Eve and James hurried to catch up with their mother and Father just as they started to walk away.

"Goodbye, Robin!" I said as we walked back to our carriages. Maybe, he is in a better mood now that we are leaving.

"Uh-huh," Robin murmured. I just stared at him. He didn't seem to notice, though. I wish I knew why he's acting like that.

"Hurry up, child!" Sir Benjamin said as I went to enter the carriage. "Maria, we are going to the De Noir's for lunch to discuss some things."

"Okay, Uncle." Maybe I can figure out why Robin's been acting like this.

"Maria, would you like it if we went into town on your birthday? I could bring some money to get a few things you would like. Or we could have a big celebration back at the Manor and invite many people from Moonacre."

"Thank you, but you don't have to do that, Uncle," I said.

"Of course we do, dear girl. We have to celebrate in some way. Your birthday can't be unacknowledged! You are turning fourteen, for crying out loud! If that isn't something to celebrate, then what is." He slapped his fist down to indicate that that was going to be the end of that conversation. I looked out the window. The De Noirs were in front of us.

Within a few minutes, I could see the De Noir castle. Memories flood my mind. The last time I was here, I was thrown into the Dungeon and escaped only in my undergarments. It will always be an embarrassing memory. I looked down at the carriage wheels watching it go over the grass and dirt. I've gotten quite used to the carriage rides, even if it isn't the same as the ones in London.

My mind trailed off from London to Robin. He seemed fine when Eve and I left, but he was annoyed and mad about something when he came to get us. Hopefully, he will be in a better mood when we reach De Noir's castle. He is my friend. I just wished I knew how to help him.

Chapter Text

[title] [width]

After a while, we finally arrived at the castle. I watched Robin and Mr. De Noir get out of their carriage as we pulled to a slow stop. Mr. De Noir came towards our carriage, with Robin carefully following him. Digweed opened the door, and Mr. De Noir, smiling, which is one of the few times I have ever seen him smile, said, “Welcome to our home.”

Uncle Benjamin stepped out of the carriage first, and then Mr. De Noir patiently offered his hand to help me out. When I got out, I noticed some other guys who looked to be about Robin’s age, a year older than me, talking to Robin. I recognized them. They helped Robin while he was trying to kidnap me.

“Ahem,” Mr. De Noir cleared his voice as Digweed closed the carriage door. He turned to Robin and me. “Sir Benjamin and I have a few things to discuss. Then we will head to lunch. I’m sure, Robin, you will mind your manners and show Maria to the dining hall.” Uncle Benjamin hasn’t quite taken a liking to Robin yet. So when he heard this, he opened his mouth to say something but then figured it would be useless and closed it back again. Loveday has tried to convince him that Robin isn't bad, but when Uncle Benjamin decides something, it’s almost impossible to change his mind.

“Yes, Father.” Robin’s friends struggled to contain their laughter because one had slipped, bringing the other two down.

Robin stepped away while his Father sternly told Robin’s friends, “You three get up and stop acting so foolish.” Robin hurried to help his friends up. Then Mr. De Noir continued, “Sir Benjamin, if will you follow me this way to my study.” As he passed by Robin and his friends, he whispered to them loudly and said, “Behave.” They nodded. As soon as Mr. De Noir and Uncle Benjamin left, they burst into laughter.

“Robin, did you see your Father’s face? He looked furious.” One of his friends said, still laughing. I just stood there watching, not sure what to do. I hoped we could go inside soon because I didn’t like being so close to the forest because of how weird it felt.

One of his other friends looked at me, then at his friends, and said, “Hi, moon princess. Let me formally introduce myself. I’m Adam.” He took a few steps away from Robin and his two other friends and shook my hand, then said, “Sorry about them.”

“It’s alright,” I said with a laugh, then continued, “But please call me Maria.”

“She needs to get used to being called that since everyone is going to start calling her that.” As Robin said, his other two friends pushed him to the ground. He was still on the floor but quickly grabbed them and pulled them down with him.

“I guess it’s my turn to help them up,” Adam said. He pulled them up, and they all agreed that they would come to a stop for now.

“Sorry about that, princess. This is Henry,” Robin pointed at the guy on his right, then he pointed at the other guy and said, “And this is John.”

“Come on, y’all, we better head inside.” Said Henry.

“Let’s give the moon princess the grand tour, but this time we don’t have to include the dungeons. They haven’t changed much since last time.” John chuckled. Robin elbowed him. “What? Did I say something wrong?” He said with a smirk.

“So this is the dining hall, but we’ll return to this later,” Adam said.

Robin let his friends take the lead, and he came to walk beside me. I was happy that he was acting like himself again. He said, “How are you enjoying the tour?”

“It’s been fun. Hey, did James tell you why his parents wanted to talk to Uncle Benjamin and Mr. De Noir?” I asked.

“Yeah, he did. I doubt that it will happen anytime soon, though. Why?”

“I-”

“Wait, hold that thought for a second,” Robin said with newfound excitement. He opened a door and said, “Wait here for a second.” He stepped in. I heard something that sounded like barking. Then he slowly came out. “Guess who I found wandering the woods this morning.”

“Wiggins, you naughty pup! How did you get out?” I exclaimed as Robin handed him over to me. “Is it okay if I leave him in there until lunch is over? I don’t think Uncle Benjamin would be too pleased if he saw Wiggins here too. He hasn’t taken much of a liking to Wiggins just yet.”

“That’s fine with me. I’ve started to take a newfound likeness to that little pup.” Robin said. I gave Wiggins to Robin.

I opened the door for him. It was a small room. There was a window across from the entrance, and by it was a messy bed and a nightstand with a knife, a few books, and cups on top. There was a dresser across the bed with clothes falling out of it. In the corner, there was an empty cushioned chair. On the floor were a few blankets, a bowl of dog food, and one of water. There was a poster of Robin the Bird, and I realized it was his room. I looked at the poster a second longer and noticed that someone had drawn an ‘x’ on the poster. Who, why would anyone do that? I wondered.

Robin set Wiggins gently down on the blanket. He noticed that I was staring at the poster and then said, “Oh yeah, last night while I was sleeping, I had left the window cracked, and Will slipped through, trashed my room, and drew an ‘x’ on my poster as a way to threat me. I woke up late and had no time to clean my room. I had to hurry and tell Father, then go outside to the woods to do some chores. That’s when I found Wiggins running away from a butterfly.” Robin laughed.

“Why is he doing this?” I asked. If it’s about me, he needs to leave my friends out of this. If this is about the new peace, he will just have to deal with it. There is nothing he can do to stop it. Uncle Benjamin and Mr. De Noir have already agreed to peace and any legal matter they have already dealt with.

“It’s kind of a long story,” Robin said, scratching his head.

I looked down the long hallway and said, “I think we have some time before your friends realize we’re gone.”

Robin’s POV:

“Umm, alright, sit down.” I said, pointing to the chair on the corner. Maria sat down, picking up Wiggins and setting him down on her lap, giving him a belly rub. I sat down on the edge of my bed. “So a long time ago, before Will was born, well, when my Father and Mother and Will’s Father and Mother were teenagers. Around our age. Will’s Mother, Emma, and my Mother were best friends. My Father and Will’s Father, Gabe, didn’t always see eye to eye. One day Will’s Mother and mine were in town shopping. They talked about how they hated not living in peace with the Merryweathers. My Mother was saying how she wished she could speak to my Father about it, but he was too prideful to ever listen to her about it. Will’s Mother agreed, saying her parents would never listen to reasoning. But from what I’ve known of Gabe, that man never seemed to have an opinion of his own. Whatever Emma thought, he would think. Anyway, Emma and my Mother didn’t know that Emma’s parents and a few others were heading to the manor to start trouble with the Merryweathers. Since your Uncle and Father were only kids then, they planned to kidnap them two, then make your grandfather give up the moon pearls and leave Moonacre forever.”

“That’s such a horrible thing to do!” Maria exclaimed.

“I know. We tried to do a similar thing to you. I just never realized it.” I said slowly. I was letting my shame sink in. I was so embarrassed by what I thought and how I acted in the past. I looked down at the floor because I couldn’t look Maria in the eye. It was too painful to think about how easily she forgave me and even forgot for a moment, but I could never forget or forgive myself. I said quietly, “I don’t know how you could forgive such a horrible person.”

Maria stood up and set Wiggings. She walked over to me slowly. Maria sat down beside me. She lifted my face with her gentle hand, so I was looking at her. Then she said, “Robin, you are not a horrible person. You helped me when I needed it. You even stood against your own Father to help me! You brought me to Loveday when I had fainted. You’ve helped me with Wiggins. You probably helped save his life twice already! Not only all that, but you became my friend, and our friendship means the world to me! So no, you aren’t a horrible person at all. You’re amazing and kind and funny and caring and brave!” Maria had the sweetest smile on her face. She let go of my face and stood to sit back in the chair.

Without thinking, I grab her hand and say, “Thank you, princess. I know that I can count on you to lift my spirits. You can sit right here if you’d like.” I said. She sat down.

I continued the story forgetting that I was still holding her hand, “But things didn’t go as planned, and then one thing led to another. The next thing we knew, Emma’s Mother and Father were stuck in a crossfire. Everyone thought your grandfather and grandmother killed them, but it could have been a De Noir for all we know. Gabe finally formed his first opinion and believed the Merryweathers were horrible people. Emma and my Mother still weren’t quite sure what to think, so they gave the Merryweathers the benefit of the doubt. Emma died when Will was ten, I was only eight then, but I still remember her telling me this. She had hoped that we wouldn’t be like the rest. But Gabe would fill Will’s head with hatred. He would tell Will it was the Merryweather’s doing if anything happened. If it were storming, it would be because of the Merryweathers. If Gabe were too busy at work to spend time with Will, Gabe would blame it on y’all. Then, when Gabe died from refusing to get medical help, William blamed it on the Merryweathers. He seemed to hate y’all more than my Father did.”

“Well, that does explain a lot. He seems to have a lot of problems,” Maria said, laughing, “But, how come so many people follow him? Isn’t he only sixteen?”

“A lot of people feared and respected his Father, so when they heard that William is just like his Father, everyone who disagreed with the peace decided to follow him,” I said. Wiggins jumped from the floor and crawled onto my lap.

“I think he’s starting to like you,” Maria said, laughing. Wiggins hopped from my lap to Maria’s. “Oh, you silly little pup,” Maria said as she petted his back. I watched Maria. She wasn’t paying much attention, but her hand was still in mine. My heart started racing, and a part of me wanted to kiss her. She looked at me, and I looked back down at Wiggins rolling over in her lap, trying to get attention. I looked at Maria again, and she was looking at me. My heart started racing faster. Without thinking, I started leaning in.

Maria’s POV:

I realized Robin was staring at me, so I looked up at him, and he quickly looked down at Wiggins. Then after a few moments, he looks back at me again. Butterflies filled my stomach, and my heart started beating faster and faster by the second. I thought I heard a voice coming down the hall for a moment, but it didn’t seem to matter that second. Robin leaned in. I closed my eyes. I could feel his warm breath on my skin.

“Oh yeah, they’re in here, alright.” Robin and I jumped up, and he quickly released my hand. It was John. I could feel my face turning blood-red. “Oh, was I interrupting something?” John asked, grinning.

“No, nothing,” Robin said, with a particular disappointment.

“Sure didn’t look like nothing,” John said, looking at Robin and then me and then back again.

“I promise, it was nothing. Anyways what is it?” Robin asked.

“Sir Benjamin and Mr. De Noir are just about finishing up and will talk with you two. So you might want to hurry back to the dining hall. Everyone else is already there.”

“Alright, let’s go,” Robin said. He was clearly very annoyed with John. Robin and John started walking out. I quickly petted Wiggins goodbye, closed the door, and slowly walked to the dining hall. When I walked in, I saw that Loveday had saved me a seat beside her.

The food was good, but I didn’t eat much. I was deep in thought and didn’t really talk. Robin was about to kiss me. I wanted him to kiss me. I really liked him, but I didn’t want to ruin our friendship. Plus, what would Uncle say? What would Mrs. Heliotrope say? It’s not like I would have to say anything right now. Oh, what am I thinking? I probably just imagined that. Like Robin said, it was nothing. I mean, there is no way, right? We are just great friends. Nothing more than that, though.

“Maria dear, are you alright?” Loveday asked. She looked concerned. Robin was also looking worried too.

“I’m okay, just thinking,” I said, giving a weak smile. Loveday looked from me to Robin, then back at me. I think that she could sense the slight tension between us.

“You know you can tell me anything,” Loveday said quietly so only I could hear.

“I know, Loveday, I know. I’m just not ready. Give me some time to see what the future has in store. But for now, I can promise you that I’m okay.” I said quietly too. Loveday nodded and went back to make small conversation with the people near her. I could feel Robin’s eyes carefully watching me, but I didn’t look up at him. I couldn’t. I still haven’t made up my mind about what happened. Well, what almost happened?

After a few minutes, Uncle Benjamin and Mr. De Noir joined the rest of us. They didn’t say much other than that they would need more than a few minutes to decide. They need to ensure that their decisions will be for the best.

Once everyone finished lunch, Uncle and Mr. De Noir asked to speak to Robin and me. Uncle told me he had to stay for a while, but I could go to the forest, the village, or the manor if I wanted to get out as long as I returned to the mansion before dark. Mr. De Noir told Robin to stay with me wherever I go, especially since what happened last night.

Once Uncle and Sir Benjamin left, Robin said, “So what do you want to do first, princess? Also, do you mind if Wiggins stays with me for a few days? I’ve grown quite fond of him.”

“That’s fine with me. Wiggins seems to like you too. I’m not sure. Where do you want to go?” I asked.

“I think I know the perfect place. Follow me.” Robin said with a smile as he hurried out of the castle.

I hurried as fast as I could after him. Once outside the castle, I lost sight of where Robin was. Oh great, I thought. I started walking towards the forest, yelling out Robin’s name. I heard a twig snap behind me. I turned my head, but no one was there. It was probably just a bunny, I told myself. I walked a few more steps forward when someone jumped out from behind a tree. I screamed, just to be met with Robin laughing his head off.

“What was that for bird brain!”

“Well, most for fun,” Robin answered, still laughing.

I rolled my eyes and said, “It wasn’t that fun.”

“Well, how about I make it up to you,” Robin said.

“And how are you going to do that?” I asked. Wondering what tricks this bird brain has up his sleeves.

“You’ll see. Follow me,” Robin said. He stretched out his hand, and we walked hand in hand. “Here we are,” Robin said. It was a beautiful meadow with many flowers everywhere, a tree, and a small stream running through the middle of the field. “What do you think?”

“It’s beautiful, Robin!” I said, taking in everything.

“It’s a good place for when you need a quiet place to think,” Robin said. I sat down by the little stream, watching the leaves fall and land in the water. Robin came and sat down beside me.

We stayed there for what felt like hours, talking, laughing, and splashing water on each other. After what felt like forever, we sat in silence, looking at the water. It wasn’t an awkward silence, though. We were enjoying each other’s company in the peace and quiet, hand in hand. I laid my head on his shoulder. I felt at ease. My thoughts were calm, not racing through my head all at once. I wished that this moment would never end.

Robin’s POV: I looked at Maria on my shoulder, and she was fast asleep. She looked beautiful even when she was sleeping. I leaned back on the tree behind me and closed my eyes. Thoughts of Maria flooded my mind and dreams.

I looked around. I must have fallen asleep. I looked at Maria. Her head was still on my shoulder, and our fingers were still intertwined. I could stay like this forever. Just before I closed my eyes back again, I looked up at the sky.

Oh no, I thought. It’s going to be dark soon. I need to get Maria back home. She looks so peaceful; I don’t want to wake her. I tapped her shoulder and said gently, “Maria, come on. It’s time to wake.”

“What?” Maria asked, still half asleep.

I nudged her, hoping that would work, and said, “Come on, Maria. I got to get you back home. It’s getting late.” She hurried up, knowing how mad Sir Benjamin would get if she came home late and all the questions he would ask her.

I grabbed Maria’s hand and helped guide her through the forest. I slowed down a bit when I realized we were nearing the manor. Maria was looking down, thinking. “I guess you had a nice nap,” I said, laughing. “I thought for a second that I was going to have to carry you back to the manor.”

Maria smiled and rolled her eyes, saying, “Oh, shut it, birdbrain.”

“Hey, that’s Mr. Bird Brain to you.” This made us both burst into laughter. I felt so at peace with Maria. I hated it when we made it to the front door. I never wanted to leave her side. The door was locked, so she had to knock. I hoped that Digweed would be busy.

“Hello, Miss Maria and Mr. Robin,” Digweed said as he opened the door.

“Digweed!” Sir Benjamin yelled.

“Coming, sir.” Digweed nodded to us, then left.

I said goodnight and kissed Maria on the cheek, leaving her looking a little pink, tipping my hat, and heading back home.

Maria’s POV: I closed the front door and walked upstairs to my room in a daze, thinking about today's events. I put on my nightgown and jumped into bed. I touched my cheek where Robin kissed me and couldn’t believe it. I fell asleep dreaming of Robin, excited to see what tomorrow will bring.

[title] [width]

It has been storming for the past few days, and no one can come in or leave the Manor. Well, except Loveday. She can use the secret tunnels to get here. I’m not allowed to use the tunnels, though. Since no one is supposed to leave, Mrs. Heliotrope has given me extended lessons with only a lunch break and a ten-minute break that I can use at any given point during the day. The classes only end at dinner time. I’ve almost forgotten that my birthday is at the end of the week. I’m just glad that the weather took everyone’s minds from my birthday to when the rain will stop.

Robin’s POV:

During the storm, Loveday filled me in on their plan for Maria’s birthday. I must keep her busy on her birthday until an hour after twelve. I have to keep her away from Silverydew because someone might accidentally spill the surprise, and I also have to keep her from the forest cause people might try and take a shortcut through it. I’m going to take her somewhere I doubt she has ever been. Everyone knows about the surprise and has agreed that we will not talk or bring up her birthday. We are going to pretend that we have forgotten all about it. Loveday came up with this plan the day that the rain started. Loveday believes that the rain will stop right before her birthday. Hopefully, she’ll be right.

Maria’s POV:

The days have been long and cold and dull. I’m starting to hope that the weather will begin to clear up. The best days are when Mrs. Heliotrope lets me finish our lessons early, and Loveday is here. I discovered that her tunnels also lead to the De Noir castle and the back of her friend’s store in Silverydew. I absolutely hate being stuck inside! I wish I could use the tunnels too.

Sometimes when Mrs. Heliotope ends our lessons early, all the adults will meet in Uncle Study. I’m not allowed to go with them. I doubt they are hiding something from me because nothing has happened since the storm. Maybe it has to do with the manor’s doors being locked all of a sudden, or perhaps the thing with Robin and I sort of being in charge of Silverydew. I was starting to feel lonely. I hoped that Robin and Wiggins were doing okay.

I sat down on the piano bench, Wrolf was by the fireplace sleeping, and all the adults were in Uncle’s study. I was bored and feeling quite lonely. I wished Robin was here. I looked out the window. It was still pouring outside, but it didn’t seem as much as the days before. I looked at the keys of the piano, and I started playing. It seemed to flow from my heart to my hands. It wasn’t Uncle’s and Loveday’s song but something that seemed dear to me. I couldn’t remember where I had heard it, but I knew it meant much to me.

“Maria?” Someone asked almost as if it were a question. It startled me and I immediately stopped playing. I turned to see Loveday and, following right behind her, the other adults with puzzled facial expressions.

“Maria, dear, where did you learn or hear that song?” Loveday asked.

“I- I- I can’t remember Loveday. I remember hearing it many times as a child, but I can’t remember who played it for me or where I heard it.” I said truthfully.

Loveday asked, “Mrs. Heliotrope do you remember hearing anything like that when Maria was a child?”

“Um, not that I can remember, no. Why, is there something wrong?” Loveday looked at Uncle Benjamin, and he nodded.

“Did I do something wrong?” I asked, looking from Loveday to Uncle Benjamin.

“Well, there’s this legend.” Loveday started to say.

“Another Moonacre legend,” I asked nervously.

Loveday laughed and said, “This isn’t like the other one. This one is much different. It has always been that a Merryweather would be granted a gift every couple of generations on a rainy day.” Loveday was now sitting beside me, and Uncle was behind us, gently laying his hand on Loveday’s shoulder. “See Maria. It was a gift handed down around every three to five generations. It never came two generations in a row. Your Father, Maria, had this gift. The song you just played is a song that you can’t learn or teach to someone. It’s a way of finding your soulmate. One day your Father was playing the piano, and your Mother came and started playing with him. We found out later that it was from the Legend, and that’s when your Father realized he had met his soulmate.”

“Your Father, my brother, tried on multiple occasions to teach me the song, but it was as if something was holding me back, and I grew frustrated and gave up. The surprising thing is that I took piano lessons growing up. Your Father couldn’t sit still long enough to learn. So you could imagine my surprise when I discovered that your Father could play such a simple song, yet I couldn’t.” Uncle Benjamin said, thinking back to the memories from years ago.

Marmaduke stepped in and said, “I think the two of you are forgetting the full story. I’ll help you remember. Long ago, before the time of the first moon princess, every generation, one Merryweather child would be blessed with this gift. It had stopped coming to every single generation when the first moon princess put a curse on the valley. But Maria ended the curse, and everything returned to how it once was. Wrolf is back to lion form, the manor isn’t falling apart anymore, and the magic has returned one more to Moonacre. Maria is part of the newer generation of Merryweathers, restoring the magic to Moonacre. She could receive this gift and truly return everything to how it once was.” I’m unsure if I had completely broken the curse remembering the moon princess’s face. Something still felt incomplete.

“How come I don’t remember that part in the story?” Uncle Benjamin asked.

“When your brother had this gift, your Father turned to mine to figure out the mystery. I still remember helping my Father. I’ve never forgotten the day when he read the legend out loud for me the first time.” Marmaduke gave a quick nod, then disappeared and probably went to make dinner.

“Well, that explains that,” Loveday said with a small laugh.

“But I still don’t understand how is this supposed to help me find my soulmate?” I asked.

“Only your soulmate will know the rest of the song. And together, the song will sound whole.” Uncle continued, “I remember listening to your Father and Mother play the song together. It wasn’t like anything I’ve ever heard before. If you just listened to the part your Mother knew, it would sound soft and gentle, but if you only listened to your Father playing it, it would sound rough and hard. You would have never realized that the parts that sounded so different would sound perfect together. It was a beautiful thing to listen to. You probably heard your Father and Mother playing it together before your Mother died.”

After that, everyone left me to my thoughts. I closed my eyes and listened to my heart. I let whatever my heart said flowed to my hands. I put all my emotions into this song, letting them play it out. When I finished, I realized that the song sounded incomplete. I wondered how it would sound once I met him. What if I’ve already met him? What if I never met him? What if he’s… Nope. But he could be. No, it couldn’t be. We’re just friends. Just the thought of him makes butterflies fill my stomach. But at the same time, it makes me want to throw up from how fast I’m falling for him. Ugh, I just wished he would make it clear if he likes me or not. I think he likes me, but I’m second-guessing myself. If he doesn’t like me in that way, that’s fine with me. We are great friends anyway. But, if he actually likes me, my heart might explode. I hate how fast I’m falling for him, but at the same time, I wish he was here with me.

The following day I woke up, and the sun was shining. Not a rain cloud in sight. Finally, it took long enough. Today Loveday laid out a light blue dress with light blue morning glory flowers on top to match. I got my vase that has some flowers from before it started raining. I realized that the flowers were the same as some of the ones in the meadow.

I hurried down the stairs. I hope that Mrs. Heliotrope will let me have the day off since I’ve been working extra on my studies and it’s the first time in a couple of days that it’s not raining.

Once I got there, I ate a few cookies that were on the table and asked, “Mrs. Heliotrope, may I be excused from my lessons today? It’s finally stopped storming, and I hoped to get out some.”

“You have worked very hard in the past few days. I guess we could just do this once, though.” Mrs. Heliotrope said.

“Thank you, Mrs. Heliotrope!” I said, about to walk out.

“Maria.” Uncle Benjamin said.

“Yes, Uncle?”

“Don’t forget to be home before dark.”

“I won’t, I promise,” I said merrily.

I hurried out and quickly saddled up Periwinkle. I jumped on and grabbed the reins. We went through a little path in the forest.

I was deep in thought until something or someone must have started Periwinkle. She started going faster and faster. I tried to calm her done, but nothing was working. I screamed as I slid off Periwinkle, but her reins started getting tangled in my arms. “Slow down, girl. It’s okay.” I yelled, but she just kept going faster and faster. I felt like my arms were going to rip off. “Periwinkle, stop!” She completely pulled to a stop once I said that. I untangled my arms, and I landed on the ground. I hurried up to check on Periwinkle. “What’s wrong, girl? What scared you?” I asked. I looked at her legs and noticed a few cuts on her back leg. She was bleeding. She must have walked too close to a thorn bush.

I looked around. We were close to the meadow. I slowly walked to the field with Periwinkle. Once we got there, she lay down close to the river. I ripped a small piece of my dress off and dipped it in the water. I gently put the cloth to clean up her blood.

Once I had finished, Periwinkle had fallen asleep. I looked at my arms. They had started turning blue and purple with red cuts. To take my mind off the pain, I wandered around the forest but made sure not to go so far away from Periwinkle. I want to take her back to the Manor as soon as she wakes up.

Someone grabbed one of my arms from behind and yelled out in pain. The person quickly let it go. I turned around. It was just Robin.

“I’m so sorry, but what happened to your arms?” He asked, worriedly staring at the cuts and bruises.

“Um, it’s nothing. Well, when I was riding Periwinkle, some thorns cut her leg, which started her, so she began to go faster and faster. She wouldn’t slow down, and I was starting to fall off her, but my arms got tangled up with her reins. Eventually, I got her to stop, and I was able to untangle myself from her reigns.” I said while looking at my arms.

“If I knew or had seen you, I would have come to help you right away to help you. I’m sorry.” Robin said.

“It’s okay. You couldn’t have known. Anyway, I should check on Periwinkle to see if she’s awake. She fell asleep by the stream while I cleaned up her blood and took the thorns from her leg.” I said, starting to head back to Periwinkle. I hoped Robin would come with me. It’s been a while since I’ve seen him.

“May I come with you, princess?” Robin asked.

“Sure, come on,” I said. As we returned, we talked about what we had done while being stuck inside for the past few days. Robin’s days were like mine, dull and full of extended classes. As soon as we got there, Periwinkle woke up.

“I’ve got to bring Periwinkle back to the manor so she can rest some more. Would you like to?” I asked, hoping he would say yes.

“Of course, princess!” Robin said excitedly. I smiled.

“Come on, Periwinkle,” I said, grabbing her reins in one hand, and Robin held my other hand. We walked back to the manor. I put Periwinkle in her stall.

I turned around, and Robin was gone. “Robin, where’d you go?” I looked around, but he wasn’t anywhere. I felt an acorn hit my head, and I looked up. Robin was climbing the tree! “Robin, what are you doing?” I asked while laughing.

“I’m trying to see something,” Robin said.

“Hold on one second,” I said. I hurried inside, up the stairs, to my balcony. I looked up at the tree. It was a bit higher than my balcony and a massive jump away.

“Robin!” I yelled as the branch he was standing on broke, and he was barely hanging on. I was so scared. What if he gets hurt? What if he falls? If he falls he can get seriously hurt. Why did he climb so high up? My mind raced with possibilities. My fears grew every second he was barely holding on. I felt absolutely helpless. What if something bad happened and there was nothing I could do to stop it? It felt as if time was going slow as I watched him struggle to hold on.

“I’m okay. I promise.” Robin said as he tried to pull himself onto another branch.

“Robin, you need to get down now. You’re going to get hurt!” I pleaded, hoping he would get down.

He was able to get onto the other branch. “See, I’m fine,” Robin said.

Robin’s POV: I’m not sure what I’m looking for, but I have a feeling that once I get up there, there is something important that I need to see. I looked back at Maria. Everything about her was pleading with me to get back down. She looked scared and worried. Everything told me to keep going up, but my heart told me to go back down. I looked up, then back at Maria. I carefully started going back down. Maria turned from her balcony and went somewhere inside. She came back outside, running towards the tree. I almost fell down, but I grabbed on tight and made it safely back down to the ground.

As I turned to face Maria, she quickly engulfed me in a huge hug. She whispered, “For a second, I thought I was going to lose you.” That’s when it hit me. She felt the same way I had felt when she jumped off the cliff to break the curse.

I quickly pushed her back so I could see her eyes. My hands were on her shoulder. I looked into her eyes and said, “I’m okay. I make it without a single cut.”

“You could have died, and I just stood there helpless.” Maria looked down, as she held back her tears.

I hugged her and then said, “Hey, look at me. I didn’t die. I’m okay, Maria. I promise. I mean, here you are worried about some stupid birdbrain, yet you didn’t even realize we have a scar on the same hand.” I hoped that would distract her from what she was feeling.

“You are a stupid birdbrain,” Maria said with a little laugh, then continued, “I didn’t even notice this. Must have happened this morning.” I gently traced the scar on Maria’s hand. It looked a lot like mine.

“I guess we were both helpless today,” I said.

“What do you mean?” Maria asked she was still looking at her scar.

“Well, I felt awful and helpless when I heard about you and Periwinkle, and you felt helpless when I almost fell.”

“Why did you start climbing the tree?” Maria asked. She seemed to be feeling better.

“I’m not sure. I had a strong feeling that there was something important that I needed to see.” I said. Maria nodded.

“I’m just happy that you’re okay.” She said after a few seconds of silence.

We spent the rest of the day talking and enjoying each other’s company. For the first time, I’m excited to return home to ensure Maria’s birthday gift is ready. I think that this will be her best birthday yet! I walked her to the door. Digweed opened the door and left to do something. I kissed Maria on her cheek, tipped my hat, and wished her a great night. I had to take a short trip to one of the village shops before I could forget. I got the most essential part of her present and headed home.

When I returned to my room, I opened my nightstand drawer, and the box I would put her gift in was all the way in the back. Besides, it was part of her gift. The other part was already in my hand. I grabbed it, added the last piece, and put it in the box. I grabbed a piece of paper and a pen and began to write her a happy birthday note. Once I finished, I put the message inside the box and closed it. Tying the box close with a ribbon. The same ribbon I had in my pocket that day. It took a while to find, but it will be well worth it.

I set the box in the back of my nightstand drawer and went to take a bath. Once I returned, I grabbed the box and stuffed it in my pocket just in case Will found a way into my room again.

Maria’s POV:

I woke up, ate a few cookies, and drank milk. I had a feeling that today was going to be awesome. I grabbed my robe, tied it around me, and headed out onto my balcony. The sun had just started to rise. I watched the orange rays of the sun illuminate Silverydew, the forest, and then the manor. I love watching the sunrise. I looked over to the side of the forest, which is forbidden to go in. It looked darker on that side. Is that smoke? No one is allowed to be over there. Something’s going on, but what?

A figure coming out of the forest caught my eye. Was that Robin? It is. What is he doing here at this time? After a few moments, Robin yelled from below the balcony and said, “Get ready and meet me at the edge of the forest.” I gave him a thumbs-up and hurried to get ready.

Today, Loveday laid out the Moon Princess dress. There were a few red roses on top. I put the roses with the other flowers. I stared at the dress. I haven’t worn it since I broke the curse. Why would Loveday want me to wear it today? I went over to my calendar. Today’s my birthday. I told them I didn’t want to celebrate, and I mean, no one has said anything about it, so it’s probably just a coincidence.

I hurried and got ready. I decided I’m not going to wear my hair in a braid today. Instead, I’m just going to have it down.

I hurried down the stairs when Mrs. Heliotrope asked, “Maria, dear, where are you going in such a rush?”

“I’m going to meet Robin at the edge of the forest,” I said.

“Oh, yes. Umm, alright. Have fun, my dear.” I nodded and headed out. Mrs. Heliotrope seemed nervous and fidgety. What if she knows something about the forest? It’s Mrs. Heliotrope for crying out loud! What am I thinking? I put thoughts about the smoke in the forest in the back of my mind and went towards the forest.

“Robin, where are you?” I called out, looking around trying to find where he went. I felt someone put their hands on my shoulder making me yelp and jump up. I quickly turned around to be faced with Robin. He looked very amused, which made me very annoyed.

“Sorry, Princess, did I scare you?” He asked, looking down at me with fake sympathy.

I scoffed and rolled my eyes. “Scared? No. Startled? Just a bit,” He smirked as soon as I said that. “Anyways, what is it?” His smirk was replaced with a genuine smile.

“Come on, I want to show you something.” He quickly grabbed my hand and started running.

“Robin, slow down! Where are we going?” I sputtered as I tried to keep up with him, but Robin just smiled mischievously and led me on through the forest.

“You’ll see, princess. It’s a surprise!” Robin said as we weaved through the tall trees, the sounds of our footsteps crunching leaves and twigs echoing in the air. I was grateful that he was still holding my hand otherwise the amount of times I would trip and fall face-first would be endless.

After what felt like hours of running, which was probably only a few minutes, Robin finally came to a stop. He started rummaging through a bag that I never even noticed he had. He pulled out a cloth and said, “This is the part that you’ll love,” He laughed as he spoke. I’m so confused, “I’m going to have to blindfold you.” Oh, heck no! I’m not doing this! He must have seen the look on my face because he asked, “What? You don’t trust me?” He had a smirk on his face.

“It’s just- I just- I- Well- Ughh. Fine. Just hurry up, and don’t let me walk into a tree.” I watched as his eyes filled with a mischievous look, and his smirk grew. That didn’t help my nerves.

Why am I nervous? I’m not quite sure. I do trust Robin, with all my heart, but to let him lead me blindfolded in the middle of the thick forest… A part of me thinks that he is going to lead me even deeper into the thicket of endless trees and leave me to find my way back, calling it survival training. He has threatened multiple times to do that to me before. But, of course, he was always joking.

“On my honor, I promise I won’t, princess.” He spoke with an unusual softness in his voice. Like he truly means it. He put the blindfold on me and grabbed my hand.

“I wonder how much that means coming from a bandit and ruffian.” I joked.

Robin stopped walking for a moment and I almost ran into him. He said, “While we might not care so much about properness or class or what society thinks, we take honor very seriously.” Robin's tone sounded serious, but I could hear the playfulness in his tone.

Robin’s POV:

We continued walking. I led us out of the forest and headed to Primrose Hollow. I made sure that I had a good grip on her hand as I directed us around a fallen tree. I love how her petite hand fits perfectly in mine. Now that she couldn’t see me, I took the time to look at her. We were close to Primrose Hollow all we had to do was continue walking straight for a couple of minutes.

I started taking in everything I could see. All her freckles, the way her eyebrows are slightly scrunched together as if she is thinking or focusing on something, how her hair bounces as she moves, and the way she is moving stiffly around making sure to not fall. She is beautiful. What! I almost stopped. Why am I thinking about how she looks? What am I doing? I looked away from her and picked up my pace trying to get there. Or maybe trying to leave those thoughts behind.

Once we were close enough I said, “I’m going to let go of your hand and check on something. Don’t take off your blindfold just yet. Stay here I’ll be right back.” Maria nodded and I let go of her hand and walked into the clearing. I looked around and saw the picnic basket on the ground and Wiggins sleeping right where I left him.

Right before coming to get Maria, I brought Wiggins and the basket here. I got a rope and tied it around his collar and a tree. I put the basket far away to make sure he wouldn’t mess with anything.

I opened the basket and started setting everything up. I grabbed a blanket from the basket and set it down, then I grabbed the food and placed it on top of the blanket hoping that she’d like it.

I've been really busy but I'm trying to find the time to write. I'll try to start updating more often. Thank you to those who continue to read, vote, and comment.

Chapter Text

I walked back to where I left Maria grabbed her hand and said, "Just a few more steps then you can take your blindfold off." She hummed as to reply.

I led her to the small clearing, let go of her hand, took a few steps so I was slightly to the side of her, and said, "You can take off your blindfold now."

She slowly took off her blindfold and gasped.

"Robin, what is this?" She looked around mesmerized for a second. It is quite beautiful, the clearing has some unique Moonacre flowers that you do not typically see in the forest.

"It is your birthday surprise from me! I know you said you did not want to do or get anything for your birthday, but I really wanted to do something like this for you. And, if you do not like it, you can just think of it as two friends having a picnic together."

She looked back at me with a soft smile and said, "Oh Robin, you truly did not have to do this for me, but I do appreciate it. Thank you!"

"Anything for my Princess. Come on let's eat!" And that's what we did. We ate, talked, and played with Wiggins.

I love how everything feels so natural when I am around Maria. I have also noticed that she has this thing where whenever she walks into a room the whole atmosphere seems to brighten. I wondered what that's about. Maybe it is just her carefree nature, or her bright smile, or the joyful shine in her eyes.

Not that I have specifically noticed this about her. I do not really notice that much about her, like when she is angry, her eyes seem to have turned to flames, and a vein on the side of her forehead pops out. When she is sad, her lips have a slight pout in them and her eyes look like glass, even if there are no tears present.

When she is happy like she is now, her eyes, appear to be shining, and her smile is carefree, as opposed to when she is stressed, there are no worry lines creased on her forehead. Her eyes tend to give away a lot, they are like a clear window as to what she is feeling. These are all things that I have not noticed about her. Well, things I try not to notice about her.

Time with Maria seemed to fly by and I did not want it to ever end. I looked up at the sun. I would say we have a couple more minutes before it's time to start heading back. I looked over at Maria, she was playing with Wiggins. She was too distracted to notice her surroundings.

Should I give her, her present now or should I wait? If I wait then she might get too busy or distracted, but am I ready to see how she will react when I give it to her? What if she won't like it, or what if she hates it?

Maria's POV:

This clearing Robin brought me to is simply exquisite! While I'm not used to celebrating my birthday, I am happy to spend it with Robin and Wiggins. It is so relaxing here. I was playing with Wiggins as Robin just sat back, he seemed to be lost in thought about something.

I moved so I was sitting beside Robin, with Wiggins in my lap. Robin, still lost in thought, did not notice me. I started rubbing Wiggin's stomach when he turned to lay on his back.

I looked up at Robin and asked, "What are you thinking about?" That seemed to snap him out of his thoughts.

He looked down at me and spoke slowly and thoughtfully, "Oh, um, nothing." He took in a deep breath and paused for a moment then smiled, "How are you enjoying your birthday so far?"

I looked around in content and spoke softly, "I think it is safe to say that this has been the best birthday I have ever had before." I looked down and saw Wiggins asleep in my lap, let out a quiet laugh, then I laid my head on Robin's shoulder and continued to speak softly, "Thank you, Robin."

His arm wrapped around me and I felt him lay his head on top of mine then muttered, "Of course, Princess." We stayed like that for a while and I have never felt more content.

This is one of the reasons why I like the countryside. You can do things like this and won't have to worry about your reputation because there is no one around you to see. Just you and the trees.

Robin's POV:

I looked around and noticed that we should start heading back now if we wanted to get back on time. I mentally sighed. Oh, how I don't ever want this to end. You got to do, what you got to do.

I lifted my head, and Maria's head followed. She looked up at me slightly confused. I brought my arm back to my side and stood up. Maria was still sitting down, looking at me confused. She looks so cute.

I cleared my throat and said, "I promised Sir Benjamin that I would bring you back to the manor exactly one hour after twelve, and by the looks of it, we should start heading back now. I rather not bring you back late, I feel as though your uncle still doesn't completely like me yet, and I would not want to give him another reason to like me any less." I held out my hand and helped Maria up after she gently moved Wiggins off of her lap.

She quickly dusted herself off and said, "Oh, us Merryweathers can be a little stubborn and hard-headed sometimes-"

"Sometimes?" I muttered with a laugh which got me a glare and I quickly stopped talking.

We both walled around putting things up as she continued, "As I was saying, Uncle just needs a little more time. And you're wrong I can tell that Uncle has started warming up to you whether you've noticed it or not. I mean he let me come out here with you so I doubt he gave you too much of a problem when you asked."

'It's not like he had much of a choice.' Oh, how I wished I could say this but that would just have left her confused and curious as to what I meant. Instead, I just hummed as a reply.

Once we finished packing everything up, I grabbed Maria's hand and started leading her back to the manor. I couldn't help but think about how her soft, petite hand fit perfectly with mine. I quickly shook my head. I try to remind myself why I do this, not for me but because I have to ensure she won't trip or get too far behind. Definitely not because I love how her hand feels with mine.

Chapter Text

We continued walking and I had to take a few detours just to make sure we did not come across any latecomers coming to the party. After about thirty minutes of walking, the trees started clearing up a bit and the manor was finally in sight.

I took a deep breath and stopped walking. Maria did not realize that I had stopped walking until my hand gently pulled her back seeing that we were still holding hands. She turned around with a slightly flustered look as she realized that our hands were still together, but that look quickly changed to one of confusion as she started to wonder why we had stopped. I quickly snatched Wiggins from Maria's hold, gently set him down, and told him to sit while sending Maria a comforting smile.

"Robin, what are you doing? Didn't you say that we need to be back at the manor? From the looks of it, it seems to almost be one hour after noon. We should hurry if you want to make it on time!" Maria said while looking up at the sky.

I took a deep breath. I've been mentally preparing myself for this moment for about around a week. I'll be fine, I reassured myself.

"Yes, I know princess, but may I remind you it is your birthday," I started and she looked back at me with a confused look, wondering where I was going to go with this, "and since it is your birthday it only seems fitting that I should give you this," I say while holding her gift out in my hand. I made sure I placed it upside down so she wouldn't recognize the ribbon just yet.

She looks curiously at the box in my hand for a moment, then shakes her head, takes a step back with her hands in the air, and says, "Oh Robin! I thought I told you that I didn't want anything for my birthday. I mean you've already done far too much for me! You shouldn't have."

Just take the gift already! You deserve this and much more than anything that I can give.

"Well, I did and sorry princess but this is nonreturnable so I suggest taking it. Anyway it is your birthday, you deserve it!." I said while pushing it closer to it.

She seemed a bit hesitant, but after a few seconds went by I started noticing her noisy and curious look pass by her eyes. I knew she would not be able to handle not knowing what was in it. She finally gave in and took it. She placed it right side up and a look of recognition and humor passed her eyes as soon as she saw the ribbon that was tied around the box.

"Robin is now a bad time to ask the one question that remains after all this time?" I gave her a confused look not realizing what she was talking about then finally remembering as she continued, "Whatever were you doing with my ribbon in your pocket, Robin?"

I gave her a wink and said, "Sometimes, some things just need to stay a mystery."

"Well then answer this how did you find it again?" She started gently removing the ribbon from around the box so it would not break when she would rip the wrapping paper as she spoke.

"Sorry princess but answering that would take away some of the mystery from the mysterious ribbon and well I really don't want to do that now." She playfully rolled her eyes at me as I smirked.

I watched as she unwrapped the box and opened it. She was handing me the pieces of wrapping paper for me to hold. I looked down for a moment to pet Wiggins on his head for being able to stay still this long and then looked back at Maria right as she was about to open her gift, fearing her reaction.

She started struggling to open the box. I had to reach into my pockets take out all the wrapping paper I had in there and set it on the ground to get one of my knives to open the box. I took the box from her hands and used my knife to open it enough so she could open the rest and too still have the gift hidden inside. I handed the gift back to her and awaited her reaction.

My hands started to get clammy. What if she doesn't like it? What if it brings back bad memories or memories that she would rather suppress? What if she deems it not good enough? What if it somehow broke in the box? How would I fix it then? I had done so much to make it perfect! I even had to go to London for a day just for this! I had to go all over Moonacre and all over London just in an attempt to find all the parts for this.

What if I messed it up? What if... I don't even know, what if it had fallen out of the box? Well how would that be possible, it is a box without any holes. What if it disappeared? Alright at this point I think the stress has finally gotten to me, but that didn't stop my thoughts from going a mile a minute waiting on her reaction.

After what felt like an hour which was probably just ten seconds the box was completely opened and there were her dainty fingers holding her gift.

Notes:

Sorry for the short chapter and the cliffhanger, but the next chapter will finally say what the gift is. Yes, I have known what gift Robin would give Maria for a while now, I just wanted the gift to be a surprise, but I wasn't sure how he was going to give it to her. Also, I apologize for the slow updates, I've been struggling with writer's block and making time to write. Recently, I've been preparing for my end-of-the-year exams. Once I get those out of my way and the last week or two of school, I should have plenty of time to write.

Chapter Text

Maria’s POV:

I slowly open the box. What did he get me? Hopefully, it is not something expensive, I would rather him not waste his money on me. I look inside the box. It is a necklace. I gently grab it by the chain and pull it out of the box.

Wait no. It is actually a silver locket in the shape of a circle. I set the box down by my feet, not taking my eyes off of the locket. I brought it closer to my face once I noticed something engraved on it.

“To remember
that your family,
new and old,
are always with you,
as each year goes by.
Happy Birthday, Maria.
Your best friend,
Robin”

I ran my thumb over the words, as I felt tears already starting to form in my eyes.

I notice in the corner of my eye, that Robin starting to tense up. “Oh no, I am so sorry Princess I did not mean to make you cry or offend you. I am sure I could do something with it and get you something else for you.” Robin hurriedly said and he tried to take it out of my hands but I held it back, closer to me.

“Robin,” I laughed, “first of all, I have not started crying just yet and two I am happy and thankful for it, now let me see what is on the inside, you bird brain!” Robin had a look of relief and immediately relaxed.

I gently opened the locket and on one side there was a picture of Ms. Heliotrope, my dad, a woman, and me. I could not have been older than one. I looked closer at the woman. She looked familiar. Who is she?

Robin must have noticed my confusion because he said, “That is your mother, Princess. I had to travel to London to find that picture.” Now I really was trying to hold back my tears. “She is beautiful and looks a lot like you. She has the same hair color as you and looking at the picture she is as petite as you.” Robin said with a laugh and I could not help but let out a giggle as well.

Then I looked at the other picture. It was a picture taken not so long ago. In it were Ms. Heliotrope, Digweed, Marmaduke, Loveday, Uncle Benjamin, Periwinkle, Serina, Wiggins, Coeur de Noir, Robin (along with his friends), and I. The picture was taken outside in the garden. It was taken to show that the two families were finally united after decades of hatred and pride.

I could not stop my wide smile as I looked at it and when I looked up at Robin. This is the best gift I have ever gotten.

“Oh Robin, it is wonderful, I love it so much. Thank you. You did not have to do all this, it is far too much! And you went all the way to London to get this picture, you should not have.”

“Technically, I went all around London not knowing where to find the picture and not knowing if there was any picture that held you as well as your parents and Ms. Heliotrope. I also had to go all around Moonacre to find the perfect chain, locate it, and get a copy of that picture we took a while ago. Then I had to put all the pieces together and find the perfect-sized box and nice-looking wrapping paper. But it was all worth it because it made you smile. You deserve anything that makes you smile and much more. Turn around, I want to put it on you.”

I gave him the locket and slowly lifted my hair up so he could easily put it on. I let one tear of happiness fall as I did this. I don’t think I’ve ever felt this happy and grateful before. He put the locket around my neck. I held my breath when I felt his fingers lightly touch the back of my neck but also when I felt his breath there as well. He clipped the locket closed and I let go of my hair then turned around.

Robin was standing in front of me, there was a look in his eyes that I could not decipher. I ignored my curiosity and quickly wrapped my small arms around his torso. He tensed up for a moment then relaxed and wrapped his arms around me. The side of my face rested on his chest. The top of my head just barely reached his shoulder. He rested his chin on my head.

When he touches me it sends sparks into my skin. Like one touch and something in my skin explodes. But this isn’t just one touch, we are hugging each other closely. A whole explosion of fireworks is going on in me but not only that I’m feeling. It feels as if a hundred butterflies are flying around in my stomach.

“Thank you, Robin. You have no idea how much this lockate means to me.” I said softly, my voice filled with emotion, giving him a little squeeze.

“You're welcome, Princess.” He spoke letting out a breath of air.

We stayed standing like that, lost in our little world and I didn’t ever want to leave the comfort of his arms. That was until Wiggins let out a small bark, which brought us back to reality. Then I gained some sense. We quickly let go of each other. I felt my cheek start burning. I can already hear Ms.Heliotrope lecturing me on how that was a completely improper and forward thing to do.

Robin cleared his throat, looking everywhere but at me, and said, “I think it’s about time to head to the manor. We are probably already running a little late.”

“O-okay,” I say still being affected by the butterflies while the fireworks did stop when he stopped touching me.

I bent down and picked up Wiggins while Robin grabbed and put back anything that had fallen to the floor.

We walked side by side towards the manor in silence. It was a slightly awkward silence but I tried to pretend that it wasn’t and that I wasn’t still flustered. I couldn’t help but look down at my locket every few seconds and smile down at it.

When we got closer to the manor I couldn’t help but realize that there was what sounded like many people were talking all at once. Then there was a loud whistle and the chatter stopped. I looked up at Robin and saw him shaking his head with the corners of his mouth turning up.

He didn’t look curious or surprised at what I had just heard, so I started walking faster with Wiggins squirming in my arms. I reached the door with Robin behind me. He was leaning against the wall with a smug smile. What’s going on? I wondered.

Chapter 13: Chapter 13

Chapter Text

I put my hand on the doorknob, expecting it to be locked as usual, but to my surprise, it wasn't. I opened the door all the way and stepped inside, with Robin following behind me, closing the door. The lights were off. Everything was pitch black. I held Wiggins closer to me. I felt Robin grab my hand and lead me somewhere. I couldn't tell where, though. Robin suddenly came to a stop, and I ended up a few steps in front of him.

Just as I was about to turn around and ask what was going on, the lights turned back on, and numerous people yelled, "Surprise!" I jumped back in shock, almost dropping Wiggins, but tightening my grip on him, and accidentally jumped into Robin, with my back hitting his chest. I felt my cheeks flush and quickly stepped forward and muttered a sorry.

Streamers hung everywhere, flowers in every corner, and tables against the wall lined with gifts. All the furniture was moved, and classical musicians had set up their instruments far across the room. There was a banner hanging across the open doorway that led to the room, which said, "Happy 14th Birthday, Maria."

Then I turned my attention to the large number of people there. Uncle Benjamin, Ms. Heliotrope, Loveday, Digweed, Marmaduke, and Coeur De Noir were in the front. I could also spot Evelyn, James, and Robin's friends there. Many people whom I had previously met in the village and the De Noir Castle had shown up. From the looks of it, the whole valley had shown up just to wish me a happy birthday.

With a confused look, I asked, "What's going on?"

"We wanted to give you a true birthday, and yes, we know that you didn't want anyone to celebrate, but we still wanted to give you this experience, and we also wanted to show how much all of us care for you. Everyone here gave a hand to accomplish this," my uncle said.

I quickly ran up and gave my uncle, Loveday, and Ms. Heliotrope each a hug as a silent thank you.

The party started immediately. I worked my way around the guests, making sure to welcome them and tell them how much I appreciated them for coming. There was music, and a few people were dancing. Most were in groups socializing.

It was nice to see the villagers and the De Noirs being civil with each other, acting as if there had never been any conflict between them before. After observing everyone, I decided it was about time to make my way around, greeting all the guests.
