Chapter Text
Magnus was just preparing dinner for the kids when there was a loud crash from upstairs. He asked one of the older teenagers, Lucas, to watch the pasta, as he went to investigate. The sound had come from room 22, which had been unoccupied until yesterday. Now it housed a 17 year old girl called Mika. Magnus cautiously knocked on the door.
“Mika? Are you alright?”
There was no reply. Magnus opened the door a crack. “I’m going to come in, just to make sure you’re okay.”
The room was a mess. Clothes were strewn around the floor, and a bookshelf had fallen down. Mika sat in the corner, holding her knees to her chest. Her phone screen had smashed, and there was shards of glass all over the floor.
“Shit, Mika. What happened?”
The girl didn’t reply, and Magnus could tell she was crying. He walked over to her, careful not to step on the glass, and sat down next to her. Then he noticed what was on the phone screen. It was a twitter post, from someone called Sharon Avery.
For those of you who don’t already know, our darling Mikayla ran away from us on Friday. She has been under a lot of stress lately, and her boyfriend recently broke up with her. We pray that she gets back home to us safely. Mikayla, if you are reading this, please come home. You know we all love you and miss you very much. Love from your very worried parents.
“Did you run away? It's alright, I won’t tell them you’re here.”
Mika shook her head. “They kicked me out.”
Magnus opened his mouth to talk, but just then the door flung open. Alex stood in the entryway.
“What the fuck’s going on? You scared all the kids- shit. Mika, are you okay?”
Magnus quickly explained the situation in sign. Magnus suspected that Alex could help more than he could.
“I’m going to check on the kids,” Magnus said, and stood up to go. Alex crouched down next to the girl.
“Do you want to talk?”
Mika shook her head. Alex sat with her for a while before she shakily stood up.
“Let’s go get some breakfast, shall we?”
