“Such a destructive thing trapped in a little metal box.”

The lighter in his hands grew heavy with importance shrouded in doubt.

Kalpas smiled, like those were the words he had wanted to hear that entire time, “I think you truly are the only one to be able to put me back on the right path. Even if I do it, you’ll be there to keep me in check, won’t you?”

    “You’re insane–”

Their lips met again, warm tears smearing on both their cheeks. Su couldn’t stand hearing Kalpas talk like that, and Kalpas didn’t want to hear the words that Emile had said to him one too many times. He must have looked so pathetic, clinging to a new lifeline that wasn’t even his. Su was kind, irresistible with how attentive he was. How selfish would it be to keep the one good thing in his life so close so no one else would get a chance to take it away?

Su kissed him back out of desperation. What was it that drew him to the fiery monster the world saw? The broken and shattered remains of a kind heart, much like his own. Anger that he couldn’t express, passion he was too reserved to show. Kalpas was an opposite, yet such a beautiful, crystal clear mirror. Was it selfish to want to not let this man destroy himself?

“I won’t let you lose yourself to madness.” Su muttered against Kalpas’ lips, holding him tight.

“Is that a promise you’re making to me?” Kalpas chuckled out, hiz gaze unwavering from Su’s mesmerizing eyes, “You should be careful with those around me, y’know…”

“In the time we have left, might as well keep one.” Su managed out of breath, a faint smile on his lips, “I meant every word I said. You don’t have to be alone. If you want an equal, I can be that parallel, if you want an opposite, I can be the reflection in the mirror. You can choose your end, but no matter which you pick, you’ll always die a human.”

Kalpas kissed him again, this time slower as if intent on sealing those words in a silent promise. Su kissed back, holding Kalpas close with just as much dedication to honor such promises. The fire within Kalpas burned bright, a kind of warmth that Su had never had the chance to be close to. Such destruction should have scared him, but it didn’t. Su was safe in Kalpas’ arms.
