Work Text:
The Fukurōdani team had just finished their training. They put everything away, except for the net. They left the balls in the cart for Bokuto and Akaashi. As everyone headed toward the locker rooms, Bokuto turned to Akaashi.
- I’m going to give my mom a call. You can take the chance to rest.
- Alright.
Akaashi sat against the wall, resting his head back and closing his eyes. Konoha was one of the first to come out of the locker room, followed by Komi and Sarukui.
- Hey guys, did Akaashi fall asleep? Komi asked.
- Akaashi? Konoha called out.
- He’s out. Sarukui said.
Bokuto came out of the locker room and saw his friends gathered around Akaashi.
- What do you want from him?
- Oi, calm down, Bo. He just dozed off. Komi said.
- He’s completely knocked out. Konoha added.
- Well, we’ll leave him to you. We’ll miss our train otherwise. Sarukui declared.
- Okay, travel safe, guys.
- Yeah, don’t overwork yourselves too much, you two.
Bokuto covered the setter with his own jacket. One by one, the others started leaving. Once they were alone, the ace wasn’t sure what to do—whether to let the younger one sleep to prevent him from dozing off on the train or to wake him up so he could go home and rest properly. He ultimately decided to let him sleep a little longer. He pulled out his phone to pass the time while waiting for the dark-haired boy to wake up.
After a while, out of the corner of his eye, he saw Akaashi’s head dangerously tilting forward. A sudden movement of his own head caused Akaashi to stir. But instead of fully waking up, he shifted slightly and rested his head on Fukurōdani’s number 4’s lap.
Not knowing what to do, Bokuto froze, phone in hand. A sly smile appeared on Bokuto's face. In the end, he didn’t move and continued his game.
When he checked the time again, it was already 7:15 PM—half an hour past their usual training end time. He hadn’t realized how late it had gotten. He put his phone down and turned his attention back to the younger one, noticing a wet spot on his shorts from drool.
- Akaashi? Hey, Kaash? Earth to Akaashi Keiji.
Bokuto stopped abruptly. He had just called the dark-haired boy by his first name. It felt strange. Still, he shook off the thought and tried to wake him again, to no avail.
- Akaashi, time to wake up. Good morning, good morning. Hey, Kaashi.
Bokuto leaned in slightly and placed his index finger on the younger boy’s nose.
- Akaashi, breakfast is ready.
- Mmhgrfph… just five more… mgrph…
- Huh? Come on, wake up.
- Give me five more minutes, Dad…
- …Huh? Hey, I’m not your dad. Wake up.
- Let me sleep, Dad…
- Akaashi, it’s me. Bokuto. Bokuto Kōtarō.
Akaashi jolted awake.
- What do you mean Bokuto’s here?! He can’t see me in my paja—…ma…s...? B-Bokuto-san…?
- What’s this about me not being able to see you in pajamas?
Akaashi looked at him, disoriented. He felt something wet on the corner of his mouth and chin. Quickly, he wiped it off with the bottom of his shirt.
Bokuto laughed despite himself.
- It’s a little late for that. Look at my shorts. Bokuto said with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
Akaashi’s gaze dropped to Bokuto’s shorts. Seeing the younger boy’s face turn red with embarrassment, Fukurōdani’s ace burst into laughter.
- I’m so sorry, Bokuto-san! I-I… S… sorry…
- Eh, it’s fine. Not the end of the world.
Bokuto’s grin stretched wider, and his eyes twinkled with that familiar mischievous glint.
- Besides, I’ve seen you in worse—remember that time you accidentally walked into the bathroom during that one training camp? You almost literally walked right into me while I was completely naked. I thought I was going to die of laughter.
Akaashi’s face turned a shade of crimson, his body going stiff at the mention of it. He quickly tried to brush it off, but the memory was too vivid.
- B-Bokuto-san, don’t you dare—
- Oh, I’m going to! You walked right into the bathroom like you were on a mission, all focused and serious, and then—BAM—you just froze when you saw me standing there, completely uncovered.
Akaashi could feel his body temperature rise just thinking about it. He had been in such a rush to get to the bathroom, preoccupied with his thoughts, that he didn’t even notice the door wasn’t locked. When he stepped inside and looked up, there was Bokuto, fresh from his shower, standing there with no clothes on at all. He’d been completely oblivious to Akaashi’s presence until Akaashi made eye contact. The shock of the moment had made Akaashi freeze on the spot, his face flooding with mortification.
- I-I didn’t mean to! I didn’t know you were in there!
- Yeah, well, that’s obvious, huh? You looked like you’d seen a ghost. You turned around so fast, you practically knocked the doorframe down! Your face was all red, and I swear you didn’t even blink. You were just standing there with your mouth hanging open like you couldn’t believe what you were seeing!
- D-Don’t remind me…
- Oh, I will! You were so flustered, I thought you might burst into flames right there. And the best part? You didn’t even know what to do next. You just kept standing there, like you were waiting for me to give you a map of the bathroom to help you get out.
Akaashi groaned, sinking his face into his palms.
- I-I just wanted to brush my teeth, but you—!
- You didn’t even notice that the bathroom was occupied?! That’s what’s funny!
- Please, I’ll never hear the end of this, will I?
- Nope. That was too good, Akaashi. I think about it all the time. Every time I’m in the locker room or bathroom, I just imagine you walking in on me again. And it makes me laugh every time!
Akaashi could barely look Bokuto in the eye, still mortified, while Bokuto continued to chuckle.
- You were so cute though, totally panicking. Don’t worry, I didn’t mind the view, but I’m sure you wanted to disappear for the rest of the camp, huh?
Akaashi finally looked up, locking eyes with Bokuto in an attempt to stop the teasing.
- Please, can we just move on?
- Sure, sure, Akaashi, but I swear I’ll bring it up at the worst possible moment. Maybe during our next match? You’ll just be trying to serve, and I’ll be there, laughing quietly, remembering that time in the bathroom.
Akaashi buried his face in his hands again, trying to ignore the inevitable embarrassment still lingering in his chest.
- What time is it?
- It’s 7:25 PM. And you still haven’t answered me—what’s this about me not being able to see you in pajamas when I’ve literally seen you in them during training camps?
- I-It’s nothing!
- Alright, come on, let’s go get changed.
They went to Akaashi’s house first. By the time they arrived, it was 8:30 PM, since they had taken their time changing and walking back.
- Good evening, Bokuto-kun.
- Good evening, Akaashi-san.
- I told you, you can call me Akihiro.
- You can call me Kōtarō too.
- Alright, alright. Come inside, both of you. Kōtarō, I suggest you stay over tonight—it’s late.
- Um, I don’t have my stuff…
- Don’t worry, I’ll lend you some pajamas. There’s no way you’d fit in Keiji’s anyway, and I’ll wash your uniform for tomorrow. Go wash up, I’ll call your parents.
The two went to Akaashi’s room. They agreed that Akaashi would shower first after picking out some pajamas at random. While the dark-haired boy was in the bathroom, his mother entered the room.
- Good evening, Kōtarō. Here, a pajama set. It’s brand new, but a bit too small for his father, so you can keep it. You can leave it here for next time to make things easier for you.
- Alright, thank you very much, Ayame-san.
- You’re welcome. And your parents gave the okay.
- Perfect.
Akaashi came out of the bathroom, and Bokuto went to shower next. When he came out, he saw the younger boy immersed in his homework. He joined him after getting his things in order.
- Hey, Akaashi, you’re in pajamas, though.
Akaashi blushed and avoided eye contact.
- Please forget about that, Bokuto-san.
- But why? I don’t get why I shouldn’t see you like this. You look adorable in owl-printed pajamas.
Akaashi turned red to the roots of his hair and stopped writing.
- Uh… Akaashi…?
- Mmh?
- Since when?
- What? The younger boy lifted his head to look at him.
- Since when… have you had… feelings for me?
- W-what? How did you…?
-Oh, come on. The way you look at me, the way you blush when we’re close… and especially the way you eye me when we change…
- Y-you… you… n-noticed…?
- Pffthaha, don’t stutter so much, cutie.
Akaashi groaned in embarrassment, covering his face with his hands.
- Uh… can I ask why? Bokuto questioned, leaning forward with that teasing grin of his.
-I… I got recommendations for Suzumeoka High and for Fukurōdani. I hesitated between the two… I knew Fukurōdani had a high level in volleyball… I was afraid I wouldn’t keep up… My friend convinced me to check out one of Fukurōdani’s matches and… when I entered the gym… I saw you… You had perfect posture, you were so encouraging… you shined like a star… and at that moment, I knew I had to go to Fukurōdani.
- So I made you want to come to Fukurōdani?
- Yes…
- That’s so cute, damn.
- It’s not cute.
- Oh, it’s definitely cute. You were all like, "Oh, I’ll just watch a match," and then—bam—I show up and it’s like you were struck by lightning, huh? You were probably so dazzled by my awesomeness that you couldn’t even think straight.
Akaashi’s face turned even more red, now looking downright exasperated.
- Bokuto-san, please stop…
- Nah, I can’t. I just picture you walking in all serious, thinking you’d just come for the volleyball, and then you see me with my perfect form, my incredible jumps, and bam! You’re like, “That’s it! I’m going to Fukurōdani for this!”
Akaashi buried his face in his hands again, shaking his head in disbelief.
- You really think that’s what happened?
- Well, isn’t it? You just told me I’m the reason you joined Fukurōdani, Akaashi. I mean, who could resist this?
He gestured dramatically toward himself, winking. Akaashi couldn’t decide if he wanted to laugh or cry from the sheer absurdity of it all.
- You're impossible, Bokuto-san.
- Impossible? More like irresistible!
Akaashi shot him a side-glance, still flustered, but a faint smile tugged at the corners of his lips.
- I still can’t believe you noticed all of that…
- Oh, believe it. I’m pretty observant, you know. Especially when it comes to cute things like you.
Akaashi’s blush deepened, and he returned to his homework in a hurried attempt to regain some sense of normalcy.
- And just so you know, Akaashi… I think you're way cuter when you're flustered.
- Stop...
Bokuto leaned back in his seat, a triumphant smirk on his face.
-I won’t. You’re way too fun to tease. So… would you go out with me?
- E-excuse-me?!
- What? You know… I have feelings for you too. Even when I acted like a kid, you always cheered me up… You support me more than anyone. I started falling for you.
Akaashi’s heart skipped a beat at the confession, his face immediately flushing. He looked down, unable to meet Bokuto’s gaze, as the weight of the words sank in. But before he could respond, a familiar voice interrupted.
-Well, that’s perfect! We can start planning Keiji’s dream wedding! Akaashi’s father said, stepping into the room.
Both boys whipped their heads toward Akaashi's father, their faces burning red. Bokuto recovered first, his usual playful energy coming back as he jumped to his feet.
- What wedding?
Akaashi, now thoroughly mortified, muttered in a small voice, his eyes glued to the floor.
- Nothing.
Akaashi’s father raised an eyebrow, clearly enjoying the moment.
- Well, he did debate between roses and lilies for your wedding in his sleep once, you know. He was all like, “No, roses are too cliché, lilies are more elegant…” His father teased, winking at Bokuto. “Anyway, let’s eat before dinner gets cold. You can plan your wedding after.”
Akaashi’s face was now a full shade of crimson. He put his hands over his face, practically sinking into his seat as he tried to will himself out of the situation.
- DAAAAAD!
- What? You’re the one dreaming about it, not me, son. His father replied with a completely innocent expression, clearly enjoying the chaos he was causing.
- I wasn’t dreaming about a wedding! Akaashi protested, now struggling to keep his composure, his voice cracking from embarrassment.
- Oh, sure, you weren't. That’s why you were mumbling about wedding venues in your sleep the other night at the training camp, huh? Bokuto teased, leaning in closer and whispering loud enough for Akaashi’s father to hear. “I heard you’re thinking about a beach wedding, but you can’t decide on the theme.”
Akaashi was a blushing mess, not knowing where to look or how to respond. His whole body was on fire from the teasing.
- Are you seriously going to bring that up? Akaashi muttered, now trying to hide his face behind his hands again.
Bokuto laughed louder, clearly not holding back any of his usual energy.
- Oh, come on, Akaashi. It’s adorable! You were dreaming about the perfect wedding while you were all cozy in your pajamas. Maybe we could have a little garden ceremony, huh? You know, just a few flowers…
Akaashi sighed deeply, wishing for the floor to swallow him whole. But before he could say anything more, Bokuto leaned over, kissing him gently on the temple.
- Don’t worry, Akaashi. I’m sure your father would be thrilled to help you plan everything, right? He’s got plenty of ideas, apparently.
Akaashi’s dad raised his hands in mock surrender, still grinning widely.
- No, no, don’t worry, I’ll leave the planning to you two. But you should probably save the... intimate stuff for later, yeah? Don’t want your relationship to be based on that, after all.
Akaashi’s eyes widened in pure shock and embarrassment. He couldn’t believe his father just said that.
- DAAAD, PLEASE, NO!
Bokuto burst into laughter, loud and carefree, the sound echoing through the room.
- Hahaha! Oh man, this is too good! Akaashi’s face is priceless!
Akaashi, now completely humiliated, stood up quickly, attempting to regain some dignity.
- I’m going to die…
Bokuto grabbed his hand and pulled him up, still laughing, but his voice softening slightly.
- Don’t worry, Akaashi. I think your dad’s just excited to see you happy.
He kissed Akaashi’s temple again, this time with a soft, affectionate smile, as they both made their way to the dining table.
- Let’s go before he starts planning the actual wedding details, alright?
Akaashi just nodded, too embarrassed to say anything else. As they sat down, Akaashi’s dad gave a last cheeky wink, clearly not done teasing them just yet.
- I’m serious, you two. No late-night activities. Not until the wedding’s planned.
Akaashi groaned under his breath while Bokuto laughed even harder.
- You hear that, Akaashi? No fun tonight! I guess we’ll just have to wait for our honeymoon.
Akaashi slammed his forehead violently against the table, but the warmth in his chest couldn’t be denied. Despite the teasing and the embarrassment, it was moments like this that made him grateful for everything.
- Boys, enough, leave my poor son alone, stop teasing him, we're going to eat.
Akaashi lifted his head and cast a grateful glance at his mother before they all sat down to enjoy dinner together.
