BARS Volume 1 | Sunset's rise

Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Morning Problems

Chapter Text

Sunset rises from her bed after tossing aside the covers in her new dorm room at Beacon Academy, where she shares a space with her team. She had to sleep next to Quart, as Applejack and Rarity called dibs to sleep next to one another in the two beds next to one another on the right side of the room... leaving Sunset stuck sleeping next to Quart. Now thankfully it was a peaceful night; her annoying young team leader left her alone, and so did her two teammates.

Sunset gets up groggy, raising her arms up in the air and yawning before Quart appears next to her and yells, "You're up!" Sunset is startled and yelps, and Quart then jumps back to join side by side. Rarity, Applejack, and Sunset find that her teammates are already dressed in the academy uniforms. The uniform consists of a red plaid skirt, stockings of various lengths, and a brown jacket with a tan vest and a white shirt with a red ribbon tied at the collar.

Rarity looks at the uniform in disgust. "Ugh, the uniforms at this academy are simply atrocious. They're completely unflattering and dull. You'd think a school of this calibre would have a more stylish uniform..."

Applejack chuckles, "Oh darlin', you know the rules. We have to wear them for classes and formal events. There's no getting around it. Unless they aren't strict with the dress code." Applejack has her cowgirl hat on alongside her uniform.

"Anyways," Quart says, lifting her suitcase. "We still have to unpack." The suitcase opens, spilling its contents. "Aaaand clean."

"Oh great," Sunset says unenthusiastically as she lifts up a hand, and her hand and her backpack glow red as she uses telekinesis to float them over, opening it. Sunset’s belongings consist solely of a few sets of clothes, a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and a journal with a leather cover featuring her emblem. But Sunset picked up the book and widened her eyes as she warily looked around before putting it back in her backpack while the rest of the girls were busy redecorating, as Sunset used her telekinesis to put her clothes in her drawers.

Rarity, meanwhile, is putting away her wardrobe of clothes into the closet and drawers and then putting down her sewing machine onto one of the desks in the room. Rarity hunches over and starts taking out and putting away some detective fiction books, alongside romance books, before she grabs Ninjas of Love and blushes as she quickly looks around and hides it away into one of her luggage bags.

Applejack just takes out a rooster alarm clock and puts up a poster of an apple tree. She then looks at Quart, who is putting away her clothes in her drawers, as Applejack thinks that both she and Quart seem to have brought with them the least amount of stuff out of their teammates. Some of the room still has Rarity's luggage bags lying about in the corner of the room.

"Uh, Rare, don't you think there's... a little too much luggage hogging up the room?" Applejack points out to her friend as she points at the corner of the room.

Rarity just huffs and crosses her arms. "Nonsense, all of this is necessary. How else am I going to look good slaying Grimm if I don't do it in style, darling?"

Sunset groans as she is now dressed in her Beacon Academy uniform. "Ugh," this is going to be what she has to deal with for the next four years: a fashion-obsessed drama queen, a farm girl with an accent who has a rooster alarm clock, and Quart's annoyingly positive happy-go-lucky idiocy.

Quart shrugs as she looks at Applejack and Rarity's back-and-forth as she looks at Sunset; Sunset just ignores it and looks at the time. It's 7:42 AM; it's almost time for class. Her eyes widen as she yells at Rarity and Applejack. "Can you idiots stop bickering! We're almost late for class because of your insistence on pointlessly decorating!" Sunset is the first rushing out of the room and down the hall, the members of BARS and RPFT peeking out from their doorways to look at her go, leaving Quart flabbergasted until she decides

"To class!" Quart yells out as she runs out, followed by Applejack and Rarity.

"Class...?" Trixie loses her balance and ends up toppling Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, and Fluttershy on top of her. She manages to get out from under them and start dashing.

"We're going to be late!" Rainbow Dash yells out as she runs ahead of her teammates.

In the courtyard, Professor Celestia and Luna watch the two teams hurry through the school. Luna looks at her watch, and Celestia smirks, glad they are aware of when classes are even on the first day.

Inside the lecture hall, the boards are displaying the Remnant world, a map overlaid by a complex pattern of notes linked with strings with images of Frieza Force spaceships, one of Salem, and one of Atlas—behind a teacher named Jaune Arc. He has a few wrinkles, and his long hair has some white strands. It is tied into a ponytail with a torn piece of red fabric. He also has a beard.

"The Frieza Force, run by the former emperor of the universe and at the peak of its power, controlled a majority of Universe 7 and tried to invade Remnant to take over our planet; however, the Huntsmen and Huntresses of that time and even other groups who could fight united together to stop this invasion, spearheaded by two ex-Frieza Force members, Raditz Ember and Vegeta the Fourth Schnee, two Saiyans who used to work for Frieza. Frieza viewed Remnant as a threat, as he had heard our planet had defeated the two Saiyans, unaware they were still alive and had turned on him. Now who here can tell me when the Frieza Force invasion happened?" Jaune says, walking back and forth before he looks at his students.

Quart raises her hand up faster than Sunset does. "Frieza tried to take over Remnant in early February, age 763. Almost a whole year before I was born," Sunset grumbles, crossing her arms in annoyance. Quart answered correctly before she did.

"Bingo!" Jaune points at Quart before he continues his lecture. "Now, from your readings, who was responsible for killing Frieza and ultimately ending the invasion?"

Sunset puts her hand up first this time. "It was Bann Belladonna after he became the first Super Saiyan in 1000 years against Frieza, and Frieza was cut in two by his own attack, and Bann chose to try to leave him for dead, though not before showing Frieza some mercy after he pleaded for his life by transferring some of his ki to Frieza. However, unwilling to accept defeat, Frieza attempted to foolishly kill Bann with an energy beam, only for Bann alongside Yang Xiao Long to counter with a combined energy beam that vaporized Frieza, killing the tyrant"

"That's correct. Now! While this must feel like ancient history to many of you, it is imperative to remember that these are relatively recent events! Why, the repercussions of the invasion can still be seen to this day, as it had made Remnant stronger than ever and more united than it was before after seven years post-Salem!" Jaune says,

Quart nods her head, knowing fully well it caused her dad to gain Super Saiyan before she was even born and her Aunt Ruby to gain Kaio-ken, the Spirit Bomb, and even the Fusion Dance. All important skills she learned in the otherworld to help take down Majin Buu

"And you shall too become great Huntsmen and Huntresses like the ones who stood up against Frieza, upon graduating from this prestigious academy! Now: Vale, as well as the other four kingdoms, is a safe haven in an otherwise treacherous world! Our planet is absolutely teeming with creatures that would love nothing more than to tear you to pieces! And that's where we come in. Huntsmen! Huntresses! Individuals who have sworn to protect those who cannot protect themselves! From what, you ask? Because it's the right thing to do! A true Huntsman and Huntress is supposed to protect others to the bitter end." Jaune explains more.

Sunset listens intently to Jaune Arc's lecture, her irritation slowly beginning to fade as she becomes more engrossed in the history lesson. Though she couldn't help feeling a pang of bitterness that her knowledge was matched by the energetic Quart. She glances over at her team, noting their varying levels of attention and boredom.

"So, who among you believes themselves to be the embodiment of all the traits a Huntsman and Huntress should have?" Jaune asks the class

Sunset's hand shoots up immediately, her competitive nature taking over. She was itching to prove herself, even if it was just in a classroom setting. She looks around the room, her eyes narrowing at the other students, silently challenging them to try and outshine her. "Me. I do." She replies in a firm voice, her gaze fixed on Professor Arc.

"Well, let's see the" Professor Arc turns to gesture at the glowing red eyes surrounded by shadow, shaking the cage that traps it. "Step forward, and face your test." The unknown monster in the metal cage continues to growl. It's a Grimm; she can't sense any Ki in that cage.

Sunset stands and pushes her seat back, glancing at the grimm in the cage. She takes a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever the challenge may be. "Alright, let's do this," she mutters under her breath before approaching the cage.

"But first it'd be best if you go and change into your battle outfit and have your weapons on hand." Professor Arc explains to Sunset, making Sunset turn her head towards the professor deadpan as she walks off to get changed in the girls locker room into her battle outfit and to get her weapons.
