Summary
R'hllor had fucked up, everyone knew he'd fucked up, and none of the gods actually wanted the game to end. So a do-over was decided, with new players. A fix-it for House Lannister.
(Aka, Joanna Lannister gets a second chance to fix her goddamn family and manages to do that - and more.)

Cb7 The princess’s household was small. Not poor - nothing in the Red Keep could be called that - but modest in scope. Before the Defiance, the Queen’s ladies had been ten deep at times, all jostling for favor. As princess, Rhaella’s rooms were quieter. Fewer gowns to catalog, fewer letters to transcribe, fewer whispers to catch before they turned into knives. It should have been a mercy. Joanna found it intolerable.
They always say that.” She couldn't help the bitterness that crept into her voice. That's what the damnable maester had told Tywin… after. “There are better ways. In Braavos, there are women who train their whole lives to tend to mothers. Their midwives know herbs the maesters pretend don’t exist. I met a merchant once who swore the wives of Braavosi nobles never die in childbed.”
Rhaella turned toward her, skeptical.
“I don’t mean never ,” Joanna allowed. “But not like here. They think us backward.”
“She has asked for a midwife from Braavos to be brought to court. She says it was your suggestion.”
Joanna gave a small nod. “Yes, Your Grace.”
The Queen’s gaze sharpened. “Explain.”
“I know not how such things are done among royalty, Your Grace,” Joanna said, voice measured. “But I have been called to attend the lyings-in of my kinswomen since my tenth nameday. Most recently my cousin Genna. She was barely four and ten when she was brought to childbed.”
Ch 9 Lady Ellyn beamed like a cat presenting a half-dead bird.
Joanna already knew what the letters said - Genna had sent copies. “ A daughter among the Princesses' household ,” Ellyn had written, “ a sign that true blood is never forgotten. ” And in another: “ One must ask which line truly carries the pride of the lion, and which hides behind old names and soft hands.

Ch 16 Tytos had written letters. Tytos had forgiven loans. Tytos had hoped, with his soft, coward's heart, that if he was kind enough, indulgent enough, weak enough, that it all resolve itself.
And now it was a crown matter. Treason. An arrow meant for Joanna and a king's blood spilled. The stain of it could never wash out. The honor of the West had been dragged before the Iron Throne like a carcass, and laid bare for all to see.
Ch 20 Years of Tytos’s benign neglect had left more than frayed honor and unpaid debts. It had left Tywin’s brothers half-raised, wandering between idleness and resentment. Kevan had grown dutiful despite it, but Gerion and Tygett had been all but forgotten until Joanna returned. She found herself not only Lady of the Rock, but something between cousin and mother to boys who barely knew how to look their elder brother in the eye.
She could not have managed without Genna. Her cousin and goodsister was no delicate lady of silks; she was sharper, louder, more fearless than most men who wore swords. Genna had stepped into the role of second-in-command without hesitation, wielding her tongue like a whip when servants lagged or minor lords whispered about testing the new lord.
Between them, Joanna and Genna had turned chaos into order. No bard sang songs about that kind of labor. It was not love letters or moonlit balconies. It was ledgers, inventories, letters to half-forgotten bannermen asking after their wives and children. It was dragging Casterly Rock, stone by stubborn stone, back to what it should have been all along.
---
Genna’s husband was another unlooked-for gem. Everyone liked to sneer at Emmon Frey. It was easy enough: a Frey in the Rock’s halls stood out like a stain on gold, and his father’s bullying of Tytos had left the match smelling of humiliation. For years, even Joanna had assumed Tywin’s goodbrother was as foolish and blustering as the rest of his kin.
Jaehaerys’s infirmity was born of treachery defeated. Tytos’s failings had been a rot of character, an abdication of every duty a lord owed his house and people. The thought that Aerys saw no difference made Tywin’s jaw clench until it ached.Ch 21 Quietly laid ground work from tread

Ch 26 She turned and looked at him face on. “Eventually she will marry. You know that the Ladies Hunt is the standard from the Riverlands down to Dorne. I would not have her at a disadvantage. And I also do not want her resentful of what she could see as her brother’s freedom.
