Midoriya and his Little Shark

Summary:

Going from house to house should've been a simple job, Aizawa thought. They were letting parents know about the new dorm system, and hopefully get their approval for it. Yet, somehow Midoriya continues to live up to the Problem Child name and reveals a secret no one knew he had.

Chapter Text

“Alright, next on the list is…” Aizawa looked at the paper in front of him, skimming across the list of names. “Looks like Midoriya’s place is close by.”

Toshinori gulped, he was a little nervous to see the boy truth be told. He didn't really talk about his family, so he had no clue what he was getting into. But he wanted to be the one to talk to his successor and his family. He felt like it was his duty as his mentor to be the one to get his families support, and to be there for his student.

Toshinori cleared his throat as they approached Midoriya's door. “So, Aizawa… about-” Before he could finish they heard a crash from inside.

“Midoriya!” Aizawa called out, knocking on the door. “Everything ok in there?!”

Toshinori put his ear to the door and heard faint sniffling, he looked to Aizawa to confirm they’d both heard it.

“Midoriya!” Aizawa knocked again.

Toshinori was about ready to break the door down until it opened, revealing a very tired looking Midoriya still in his pyjamas. All Might pyjamas specifically.

“Wha-” Midoriya’s mouth immediately closed as he saw who'd knocked, his eyes going wide. “Aizawa-sensei! All Mi- I mean, Toshinori-sensei… Why are you here?”

“We just needed to talk to you and your guardians about something, my boy. But, are you ok? We heard some commotion earlier?”

“Oh! Yeah, just a dropped plate is all.”

“And the crying?” Aizawa asked, noting that the boy's eyes seemed suspiciously dry.

“That was Hana. She got a bit spooked is all.”

“How?”

“Well, she smelt you coming. She got a bit nervous, and accidentally dropped a plate she was holding. Don't worry, she's fine. I checked. She's just a little shy.”

“My boy, who is Hana?” Toshinori couldn't believe that was his Mum, I mean he's calling her by her name. A little sister perhaps.

Instead of answering, Midoriya turns around to call out. “Hana! Do you want to come say hi?”

As they step into the apartment, being practically dragged in by Midoriya as he closed the door behind them, they see a small girl come from a door at the back of the living room which looked to be the bathroom. She wore a pretty light blue dress, and had short black hair. What stood out to them the most though was her quirk. She looked like a humanoid shark. She had fins going down her forearms, and some going down her back too. Her hands and webbed feet had sharp claws, and she had a bit of a snout. Her skin was all a blueish grey, with some white in areas like under her chin. Almost like she had an underbelly like a regular shark. And her tail looked pretty big for a girl her size.

“This is Hana, she's 5. Say hi, baby.” Midoriya's voice had gone to a level of softness that neither teacher had ever heard from the boy.

“Hi.” She said in a small voice as she hid behind Midoriya's leg.

“So this is your little sister?” Toshinori asked.

Midoriya shook his head. “No, I… It's complicated.”

“Then uncomplicated it, problem child.” Aizawa sighed, already feeling the headache to come. In response, little Hana let out a hiss at the man's words.

Midoriya picked her up and settled her on his hip, and she immediately laid her head on his shoulder with a small content smile on her face. “Well, there's a lot to it. But, Hana is my daughter.”

Toshinori almost spat out blood on the carpet right there and then. “You’re daughter?!”

Midoriya nodded sheepishly. “Yeah, I adopted her about a year ago.”

“You're a kid, you can't legally adopt someone.” Aizawa sighed.

“Well, I was quirkless at the time. And as quirkless people are declared adults at 13, I could legally adopt. Though they usually wouldn't let quirkless people adopt, they moved our case along quite quickly. I think they just wanted to get rid of her.” He pats the little shark's head with a smile on his face. “But I'd never leave her, she's my world.” He placed a small kiss on her forehead as she giggled.

“I'm sorry, you were quirkless?” Aizawa looked shocked.

“Yeah… I was a late bloomer, quirk came in late. It's probably in my records somewhere, right?”

Aizawa’s rule of not looking at student's records to gain biases, had come back to haunt him. “How late?” He asked with a sigh.

Midoriya stayed quiet, shuffling on his feet. Toshinori tried his best to act nonchalant and definitely failed, though maybe he could just chalk it up to being an awkward teacher. Truthly, Toshinori didn't care what Midoriya told Aizawa. Yes, they should be careful with a secret like One for All. It's closely guarded for a reason. But after working with the man, he knew he could be trusted. He was also the boys teacher and probably deserved to know, even if they'd be telling him a little late... So after talking a calming breath, he nodded subtly at Midoriya. He doesn't know how subtle it actually was, but he tried ok! Luckily Midoriya got the message, and smiled back at the man.

He turned back to Aizawa, taking a deep breath to get ready to answer. Never a good sign. “About… the day before the entrance exam…” Midoriya's voice quietened as he spoke, but Aizawa caught all of it.

“We need to have a talk, problem child.” Aizawa put his head in hands for a moment, though the use of the nickname did draw another small hiss from Hana.

“I know.”

“Not just about your quirk, how long have you been living here with no adult supervision?”

“I don't need supervision.” Midoriya frowned at the man.

“You're a kid, you shouldn't be living on your own. Not you, or your daughter.”

They both caught the smile that graced Midoriya's face as Aizawa referred to Hana as his daughter. “Well…” Midoriya shuffled a little more as he tried to find the right words. “It's a long story. But basically, my parents have never really been around. You could try to get in contact with them, but I doubt you could. They both eventually moved to America, leaving me here. Father sends money over occasionally for bills and such, but it's never really enough. Especially after I found Hana, so I've been working at the café nearby when I can to make up the rest. Hana loves the cakes there, don't you?”

Hana nods. “Best cakes.” She mumbles.

“Anyway! Come, sit down. Can I get you any drinks?”

“We're fine Midoriya.” Aizawa took a seat, Toshinori following behind.

“Cool, let me just grab some water for Hana.”

“I'm fine, Dad.” Hana grumbled quietly.

“I'm not having you dry out, young lady. Let's get some water in you.” He rushes over to the kitchen to get a glass of water for Hana, who's still attached to his hip, and then comes back to the living room. He sits opposite the two heroes, putting Hana on his lap as she slowly drank from the glass in her hands.

“What did you come to talk about?” He asked.

Aizawa cleared his throat. “Well, we might have to change plans a bit to accommodate you and your daughter’s situation. But we’re here to talk about the plan to relocate all students to the U.A dorms.”

Midoriya’s eyes light up in recognition. “Ah! Yes, I remember that email.”

“So, obviously your situation might be a bit different-” Aizawa continues, but is interrupted by Midoriya.

“I know Aizawa-sensei. I can’t go to the dorms.”

“Why would you say that?”

“Because I can’t leave Hana, I won’t.” There’s a firmness in his voice. This wasn't a firmness of a hero, or a student, this was the firmness of a parent who'd do anything for their kid. Midoriya was ready to stand his ground just for the little shark girl on his lap.

“Well then, Hana would come with you!” Toshinori spoke up. “None of us would want to leave the girl here. We could talk to Nezu and have two dorm rooms connected, that’d be enough room for the both of you. We’d be able to keep the both of you safe, and I’m sure Nezu would be able to set up arrangements for little Hana’s schooling.”

“I don’t want to uproot her life.” Midoriya patted the young girl's head, said young girl had grabbed one of the soft toy sharks that was next to them and was playing with it on her fathers lap. Having put the now empty glass on the coffee table in front of them. “I want her to still be able to see her friends, I don’t want her to be affected by my choices.”

“We can figure that out, problem child.” Aizawa replied, which drew another hiss from Hana at the nickname. Though it barely had any weight to it. Like she’d done it more on instinct then to actually be threatening. Her attention was solely focused on the shark on her lap. “We would need your guardian’s permission, but it seems like getting in contact with them would be difficult.”

“They wouldn’t even bother to answer.” Midoriya confirmed.

Aizawa sighed. “So, with that in mind. If you were to come to the dorms, you’d become a ward of U.A.”

“Aizawa-sensei. I’m already legally an adult. Quirkless laws and all that.”

“You’re a kid, regardless of what the law says. You shouldn’t be doing all this alone.”

Midoriya thinks for a moment, before speaking. “Hana is my daughter, she is my world. I’d do anything for her. I’d sooner leave the hero course, then cause her any pain or discomfort. So if we do go to the dorms, we go together. And I want to talk to Nezu about any and all arrangements, especially when it comes to cost.”

“You aren’t paying us anything, problem child.”

Midoriya looks down at Hana on his lap, she smiles up at him. “I don’t want to owe U.A.”

“Young Midoriya.” The boy looks up at his mentor. “This is for your safety. U.A is covering all the costs, you won’t have to pay a penny.”

“So… no more part time jobs?”

“I should hope so.” His mentor gives him a gentle smile. “And if you’re uncomfortable with the idea of being a ward of U.A, then I believe I have an idea.”

“What’s that?”

“Well…” Toshinori blushed a little, trying to find the right words. “I can always become your guardian. Less people will be involved, and we’ve known each other for a while. And it should hopefully be a more normal situation, for both you and Young Hana.” The older man smiled and waved at the little girl, who timidly waved back with a shy smile.

“I… We wouldn’t want to inconvenience you in anyway,”

“My boy, it would be my pleasure. I said I’d help you on your journey to be a hero, and I meant every word of it.”

Midoriya looked about ready to burst into tears, though neither mentor nor student missed the look that crossed Aizawa’s face. He’d probably probe them for more information later, but now wasn’t the time.

“As long as I can talk to Nezu about arrangements.” Midoriya spoke up after a moment's silence. “Then I think I’d be able to accept.” He looks done at Hana. “What do you think, baby?”

Hana nods. “I always wanted to see your school.”

The boy smiles and strokes her hair. “Then maybe I’ll give you a tour, just for my little shark.”

Chapter Text

Hana’s eyes sparkled as they walked up to the gates, no one was in class at the moment given it was a Sunday. Aizawa and All Might had only visited yesterday, and yet they managed to get a meeting with Nezu so soon. They did want everyone in the dorms as quickly as possible though so it made sense.

“What's that?” Hana pointed to a huge door on their left, a door Midoriya was very familiar with.

“That's my class.”

“Why is it so big?”

“In case someone that big needs to come through the door.”

“Have you ever met anyone that big?”

“Not yet, but never say never.”

Hana continued to look around while holding her father's hand, never straying too far from his side. He smiled at the little shark girl as she took everything in on their way to Nezu’s office. Once they'd reached the office, it occurred to Midoriya that he'd never actually been inside. He'd passed the office a couple times, but never went in. Never needed to. Not until now anyway. It was just a little intimidating, but he'd be strong for Hana. He always would. He took a deep breath and opened the door, Hana hiding behind his leg.

“Ah, Midoriya!” Nezu clapped his hands together, sitting by his desk with a cup of tea. “Come in, come in! We have much to discuss.”

“We do.” Midoriya nodded as he closed the door behind him, sitting opposite Nezu with Hana in his lap.

“And this must be little Hana!” He waved at her with a smile ever present on his face.

Hana curled up closer to Midoriya, burying her head in his chest.

“Sorry, she's a bit nervous.”

“No need to apologise! I quite understand.” Nezu took a sip of his tea before gathering some forms he had from his desk drawer. “So, with Toshinori becoming your guardian this makes things a little easier. Even though you may already be legally an adult, now you have a quirk that could come into question.”

“They'd bother to question it?”

Nezu nodded. “They might. Quirkless people being recognised as adults younger than most, which is quite the stupid law might I add, is mainly so that they can be seen as less of a burden to society. It's why you see so many quirkless homeless people. If they're legally adults, then it's legal for families to abandon said children to do whatever they'd do otherwise and it wouldn't be child neglect. Though, I'm sure you know how biased the law and our world is against quirkless people.”

Midoriya nodded. “Yeah. Without it, my parents wouldn't be in America. If they're still there, that is.”

“Luckily we won't have to worry about that! I think we have enough proof of child neglect, and I have some of the best lawyers on payroll. I'd think getting you and Toshinori sorted with the relevant paperwork will be easy! What we need to talk about are the dorms.”

“Yeah, where would Hana and I be staying?”

“You'd be staying with your class!”

“Is there enough room?”

“As soon as I heard the news I got the builders to work with Cementoss to build a new floor of Class 1A's dormitory! It should be complete at some point today, considering we managed to get to work so quickly. Now, we didn't have a lot of time to plan out the rooms any differently so you'll both have similar rooms to those of your classmates. They might be a tad bigger, and we have joined two rooms together for the both of you. But considering this was short notice there wasn't much else we could do, we aren't miracle workers after all. Especially as young Hana was quite the surprise.”

"That's still a lot." Midoriya took a deep breath, slightly overwhelmed. “I'm sorry I didn't mention anything sooner, it's just… We've already been through too much. I didn't want her to go through anything else, not if I could help it.”

Nezu’s smile becomes a lot less sharp, and more soft as he holds out his paw in a comforting gesture. “We understand, Midoriya. You were protecting yourself and your daughter, just like any father would.”

A small smile graces the boy's face as his eyes water. “I… Thank you.”

“Now, the both of you will be moving in a day early. That way we can get you all setup, and allow you time to talk to your classmates without being overwhelmed. Now, onto the next item. Young Hana's schooling.”

“I can continue to walk her down. It's no trouble.”

“Midoriya, the reason for the dorms is to keep you safe. Allowing you to continue to walk young Hana to school could put you both in danger. I'm sure you already know this.”

“But I don't want her to leave school. She has friends there, I couldn't do that to her.”

Hana looks up at her father, giving a small tug on his sleeve. “But… what if I put them in danger?” Tears threaten to spill from her eyes.

“No, baby. You could never.” Midoriya hugs the girl closer to him. “You could never put anyone in danger. You are the sweetest little girl I've ever known.”

“But what if they hurt me to hurt you? What if they try to hurt my friends too?”

“I'd never allow that to happen.”

“No, we would not.” Nezu agrees, looking at the young girl to address her. “If you wish to stay at your school, young Hana. Then we can have a hero escort you there, and pick you up at the end of the day.”

“We wouldn't want to inconvenience anyone.” Midoriya chimed in.

“You wouldn't! These heroes are teachers here at U.A after all, they'd only be doing their job. We could setup a sort of roster if you will, allow young Hana to meet all the teachers and have them escort her on different days.”

Midoriya looks down at the girl on his lap. “What do you think, baby? You ok with this?”

The shark girl nods. “Then maybe Dad will be less tired.”

Midoriya sucked in a breath at that, he hoped he'd hidden it better. “I'm fine, sweetheart.”

The girl shakes her head. “This helps both of us.”

After taking a moment to collect himself, Midoriya nodded. Tears still in his eyes. “Ok. This helps the both of us.” He slowly stroked his daughters hair, his face turned serious. “But you must promise me that if there are any problems. Any at all. That you'll come to me, ok?”

Hana nods. “I'll be ok, I'm a big girl now!”

“Oh, but you'll always be my little shark!” Midoriya kisses her forehead. “But if you're ok with it, then we'll give it a try.”

“That's all I ask.” Nezu smiles at the pair. “So, who wants to meet some heroes?”

Chapter Text

Meeting everyone had exhausted Hana, though he wasn't too surprised. Midoriya himself wasn't doing much better. It was the first time he'd been able to freely talk with a lot of the heroes he saw day to day, which for a hero nerd like him it was like being a kid in the candy store. He got a lot of new autographs, and more importantly got some great quirk related questions answered. He was lucky he brought his notebook with him! Hana though, she had stars in her eyes when she met Present Mic. She loved his radio show, and was one of her favourite heroes. That and Gang Orca, who Midoriya still wanted to try and set up that meeting for her. Maybe now that he was in U.A, that'd be more possible.

However, today was moving day so they had to get everything unpacked and ready to go. Aizawa-sensei had been kind enough to pick them up from their apartment, along with all their boxes. Present Mic was also there, much to Hana’s delight, with a proper moving van. True to Nezu's word the rooms were pretty big, though it was weird to have a floor with just two rooms in. The doors that lead into each room were right next to each other, and those rooms were connected. He doubted that door between their rooms would ever close, but it gave Hana her own space. However there was also a bathroom opposite their rooms, which was a very nice inclusion. It meant they wouldn't need to go between floors to brush their teeth and such.

Hana was currently in her room, she had insisted that she could unpack her stuff. Midoriya wouldn't stop her, but he'd go check on her in a bit. After unpacking the last of his clothes he gently knocked on the open door as he stepped in. Hana had put all 4 of her shark plushies on her bed, and had a bunch of Present Mic and Gang Orca posters ready to go on the wall. She couldn't hang them up herself however she had taken them carefully out the box and put them on her desk. Her clothes were also mostly still in boxes, she'd only managed to put some in her draws. Her tank was surprisingly out of it's box too, which Midoriya would make sure was properly assembled before he filled it up. He needed to make sure she had access to it in case she needed it, though she also just liked floating in the water. Maybe he should take her to the Musutafu pool again when everything calms down. He smiled down at the girl who was currently showing off her handy work.

“Wow, look at all this!” Midoriya let out an exaggerated gasp as he looked around. “You've already done all this?”

“Yup!” Hana puffed her chest. “I told you, I'm a big girl now!”

“Oh, you've grown up so fast!” Midoriya moaned as he put his hand on his head, leaning back dramatically which drew a giggle from his daughter. “What am I gonna do when you don't need me anymore!”

“I'll always need you, Dad!”

“Awww, you're too sweet.” He lifted the giggling girl. “Now, how about I help you unpack the rest and we can go get lunch?”

“Fish?” Hana asked with a ridiculously adorable head tilt.

“I'll see if we have any.” He placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. “So, let's get to work!”

It didn't take long to get the rest of her clothes put away and hung up, and with some input from Hana he'd hung up all the posters in her room as well. After double checking the tank, which only needed some small adjustments, they went downstairs to the dorm's common room. Midoriya had checked the fridge and there was plenty of fish. He'd let Nezu know of Hana's dietary needs beforehand, she needed plenty of water and plenty of protein, and fish was one of the best sources of that for her. He probably shouldn't be so surprised that they managed to get this much so quickly, but he certainly wasn't complaining.

Hana could eat raw meat, but Midoriya tried not to make that a habit. She wasn't fully shark after all, and he didn't want to test how much raw meat his daughter could eat before her human side started complaining. So he cooked it with some vegetables and got her some juice as well, and put that out on the table for her and then made himself some noodles. Once he left the kitchen Aizawa-sensei called him over. He'd been supervising them the entire day, probably so he could talk with Midoriya but also for security reasons. He'd thankfully given them space after showing them to their rooms to unpack and such, giving them some privacy. Though he probably still had a couple questions about everything, which Midoriya wasn't surprised about. He sat with Aizawa-sensei on the couches in the common area, Hana not too far away.

“So, I assume you know what I want to talk about?”

The boy nodded. “Yes, I think I do.”

“First of all, I’d like to thank you for talking to me about your quirk. As useful as it’d have been to know earlier, I understand it was probably hard to talk about. I assume you haven’t had any quirk counselling?”

Midoriya shook his head. “There just wasn’t any time, and who knows how much it would have cost.”

Aizawa-sensei signed. “Well, from next week onwards I want to see you after school a couple times a week. Even though you’ve gotten a lot better with quirk control, this could help you catch up. Hana is welcome to come if need be.”

Midoriya looked shocked. “I… Why?”

“I am your teacher, Midoriya. It is my responsibility to help craft you to be the hero we know you can be.”

Midorya’s eyes watered. “I’ve never had a teacher help me before, not in my previous schools...”

Aizawa-sensei wished he could say he was shocked, but after his recent revelation with the boy’s quirk status. He can't say he is. “Well U.A is different. And based on this information, do we need to talk about your relationship with Bakugo?”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m not an idiot, Midoriya. I’ve seen since day one that you both had a difficult relationship, and I assumed getting you both to work together would help. That it was just a rivalry or something like that. However, do I need to be worried?”

Midoriya’s eyes widened as he tried to find the words. “I… No.” He sputtered out.

“Are you sure? Need I remind you, U.A has a zero tolerance policy towards discrimination and bullying.”

“I can’t.”

“Midoriya-”

The boy held out his hand, interrupting his teacher. “He’s gotten better. U.A has helped him, and he’ll be a great hero. Yes he has issues, but I’d rather he be here. Figuring them out. If he were to be expelled for what happened in the past, he’d just be a target. It wouldn’t do anyone any good, especially him.”

Aizawa-sensei looked at him incredulously. “I’ll drop it for now then, but if anything happens you let me know.”

His tone indicated he left no room for discussion, so Midoriya just nodded in response.

“What about Hana?”

“What about her?”

“Has she been to quirk counselling?”

Midoriya nodded his head. “Yeah, I wasn’t going to let her go without. She hasn’t been for a while, we don’t really have the money for that. There were also only so many places that would allow quirkless people, but we found a good place. A lot of what we know about her quirk has come from there.”

“I assume it has something to do with sharks.”

Midoriya chuckled. “That’s quite obvious, isn’t it? She doesn’t just look like a shark, she has the gills to breathe underwater. She’s really quick in the water, swims like a natural. Her claws are super strong, so are her fins. She’s got a very powerful bite, and she has an amazing sense of smell.”

“How powerful is her smell?”

“She can smell our blood. I’ve never been able to hide an injury from her, and it’s probably why she kept glancing at you when we came down.”

“What do you mean?”

“You’ve been favouring your right leg.” The boy points out. “I didn’t notice until I saw Hana glancing over at you. She’s probably worried.”

Aizawa-sensei huffs. “I’ll be fine, problem child. I’ve had worse, and I’ll be all healed by tomorrow.” He stands up and gives a small wave to Hana, who gives a shy wave back. Her mouth currently full of fish. “I’ve got to make sure everything's sorted for the rest of your class tomorrow. Present Mic will be here to supervise soon, think you can wait that long?”

The boy nods. “Thank you, Aizawa-sensei.”

“Don’t thank me kid.” His teacher gives him a small smile, partially hidden by the capture tape around his neck. “I’m doing my job.”

Chapter Text

Class 1A stood outside the dorms, Midoriya included. He was a little worried about leaving Hana on her own, but she was currently up in their room. She was asleep last he checked, and he didn’t want to wake her up to overwhelm her with everyone. She’ll meet them all soon, so he was hoping the nap would help her recharge before that. Wait, did he remember to fill up her tank? ...Yes. He did. He did that last night. Did he clean it?! ...Yes, he did. That was last night too. Anything else? He doesn’t think so, but the urge to go up and check is stronger now more than ever. But for now he sticks with his class, Hana knows where he is if she needs him. He’ll be up there soon.

“Now then, Class 1A. I’m glad to see you all here.” Aizawa-sensei stood in front of them.

“Looks like everyone got permission to move in.” Sero smiled as he looked at his classmates.

“It was an uphill battle for me…” Hagakure sighed.

“And we’re glad to see you here, sensei. I was sad cuz I thought you might not come back after that press conference.” Asui looked relieved as she addressed their teacher.

“I was surprised too. But… a lot’s happened.” Aizawa-sensei looked deep in thought for a moment, before shaking it off. “Anyway, I’m gonna give a quick overview of your dorms. But before that, the training camp was meant to earn you your provisional licenses. And that’s still the goal.”

Somehow most of the students had forgotten about that, and honestly Midoriya couldn’t blame them. After all that’s happened, he almost did too.

Aizawa-sensei cleared his throat, gaining control of the class. “This is important, so listen up. Todoroki, Kirishima, Midoriya, Yaoyorozu, and Ida. On that night, you five headed out to rescue Bakugo. I think all of you here understand the consequences of those actions. The issue’s been swept under the rug for now, but let me say this much. If not for All Might’s retirement I would have expelled every single one of you. Except for Bakugo, Jiro, and Hagakure.”

Midoriya looked down at the ground as his sensei spoke. Sure his sensei’s disappointment hurt, but nowhere near as much as Hana’s tears. He’d told her that he had a late shift at one of his part time jobs and that she'd be staying the night with the landlady, who was affectionately dubbed Grandma by Hana. She helped them out a lot over the years, and gave Midoriya a lot of leeway when it came to rent and such. She would always be down to look after Hana whenever Midoriya needed her to, which is what she did that night. When he came back it was later than usual but he hoped Hana hadn’t worried too much. As the landlady opened the door after he knocked, his little shark came barrelling forward with tears in her eyes. She was so worried, and it took a lot of apologies and some fish shaped candy to help appease her. He knew he couldn’t leave Kachan there alone. If it was Hana he’d move heaven and earth to keep her safe, and he could see the determination in his fellow classmates eyes. Midoriya knew he needed to help. Giving help where it wasn’t asked for, was the essence of being a true hero after all.

“The chaos is sure to continue now that he’s retired. And since we can’t get a read on the league of villain’s next move. Kicking anyone out of U.A at present is ill-advised. The five who went, of course. But also the twelve who knew but did nothing to stop them. Your reasons aside, the fact remains that you betrayed our trust. From this point on, if you follow procedures and behave properly, you might be able to regain our trust.” Their teacher sighed after his impromptu lecture, before turning towards the dorm. “That’s all! Now look lively and get a move on.”

Despite what their teacher had just said, no one looked lively. In fact, they looked the complete opposite. Kachan wasn’t having it though, as he dragged Kaminari behind a bush and forced him to activate his quirk with a small explosion. Midoriya couldn’t help but flinch slightly at the sound. The aggressive blonde pushed the now dazed Kaminari out from behind the bush as he held out his thumbs. As some of the students tried to hold their laughter at Kaminari’s current predicament, Kachan walked over to Kirishima.

“Kirishima.”

“Wha-?” The redhead went to ask, only to get interrupted with a wad of cash being pushed into his hands. “Eh?! Too scary dude. You shook him down for that?!”

“Wrong! I brought this cash myself!” You could almost see the veins popping out of the blonde’s forehead. “I don’t want anyone ever calling me stingy. It’d just piss me off.”

Midoriya wasn’t quite sure what significance the cash held, but Kirishima seemed touched.

“Thanks man.” The red head turned to face the rest of the class. “You guys! I’m sorry!! I know I can’t really make it up to you, but this money’s gonna go into some barbecue for everyone!!”

As everyone cheered, Midoriya thought if he’d still say the same thing knowing they had a surprise mouth to feed. But if they were getting barbecue, the boy was gonna make sure Hana got some. She loved meat.

As they entered the building, Aizawa-sensei started explaining how the dorms worked. “One class to each building. Girls on the right, boys on the left. The first floor is a common area. Your dining hall, baths, and laundry rooms are here on the first floor. They’re split up by gender, so no funny business. The rooms start on the second floor. Four boys rooms and four girls rooms on each floor, five floors in all. Well, six floors in this case. One student per room. You’ve got air conditioners, toilets, refrigerators, and closets. Enjoy the luxuries.” Aizawa-sensei handed out maps to the students of the dorms, he’d noticeably didn’t give one to Midoriya as he and Hana already had one each. “These are your room assignments. The luggage you sent over earlier should already be in your rooms. Today’s set for settling in. We’ll talk about what comes next tomorrow. Any questions?”

Yaoyorozu raised her hand, Aizawa-sensei nodded to her. “There seems to be someone here we haven’t met, on the boys side of the dorm. Who’s Hana?”

Everyone quietened at that. They were clearly curious, though they needn't be for long.

“She’s a special guest who will be staying with your class. I expect everyone to treat her with respect, and anyone who makes her upset can and will be expelled. Do I make myself clear?”

The class nodded, having caught on to how serious this was. Midoriya however couldn’t stop the tears that threatened to spill, happy that the teachers were ready to protect Hana just as much as he would. It definitely helped lessen his anxieties a little about everything.

“Midoriya will introduce you to her soon. If that’s all, I’ve got work to do.” Aizawa-sensei sighs as he leaves the dorm, obviously not looking forward to whatever that work may be.

Midoriya turned to see the curious hungry stares of his classmates. Ok, maybe they weren’t all that intense, only a select few, but it definitely shot up his anxiety again.

“Midoriya, I don’t mean to intrude.” Yaoyorozu shifted as she spoke, clearly not sure how to handle this situation. “But, who is Hana?”

Midoriya stands there for a moment before taking a deep breath to recollect himself. “It’s better if you just meet her, then we can go from there. Stay here, I’ll be right back!” The rest of class 1A looked on confused as Midoriya dashed up the stairs to his and Hana’s dorm rooms.

It didn’t take him long to get to their room and he knocked on Hana’s door. “Hey baby, you awake?”

The door slowly opened to reveal Hana in her shark pyjamas. She loved these ones cause it came with a shark hoodie that had red on the inside and had white teeth decorating the hem of the hood.

“Hey baby. Did you have a nice nap?” Midoriya smiled as he bent down to her eye level.

She nodded her head with a small yawn. “I-Is it time?”

Midoriya nodded. “Don’t worry, they’re good people.”

“But…” Hana looked down, grabbing at the hem of her hoodie. “What if they don’t like me? What if they’re scared of me?”

“Oh baby.” Midoriya gently lifted the girl into his arms. “They’ll love you, trust me. You have nothing to worry about.”

“Promise?”

Midoriya kissed her forehead, and gave her a big reassuring smile which seemed to help. “I promise.”

As they came downstairs back to the common room, the whole class turned and could only watch in shock. Obviously none of them expected Midoriya to bring a child down. However within the shock there were some students who were a bit too excited, namely Ashido and Hagakure who dashed towards them.

“She’s so cute!” Ashido had stars in her eyes as she got closer.

Hagakure looked about ready to squeal. “Midoriya, who’s this little cutie?!”

Hana, already feeling a little overwhelmed, turned to hide her face in Midoriya’s shoulder which just seemed to make the girls coo at her even more. To save his poor daughter from the onslaught, he held out his hands to keep them from getting closer.

“Alright, move back. You’ll overwhelm her otherwise.”

The two girls looked a little dejected at that, but thankfully moved back.

“Now, I know you all must have some questions. S-So for introductions, Class 1A this is Hana. Hana this is Class 1A. She is… my daughter.”

Everyone did a spit take at that. Wide eyes looked between the green haired boy and the small shark girl.

“That’s…” Yaoyorozu had to take a breath before continuing, to collect her thoughts. “That’s your daughter?”

He nodded. “It’s a long story, but yes she is.”

“She doesn’t look much like you, kero.”

“No, she’s adopted. Not my biological daughter, but that doesn’t make her any less my daughter. I ask that you treat her with the same respect you’d treat anyone else at U.A. She’s a little shy but a very sweet little girl, so please try not to overwhelm her.”

“Don’t worry, Deku! Hana’s safe here!” Uraraka piped in.

“As shocking as this is!” Ida cut in, his arms already chopping. “We shall endeavour to give young Hana here a good experience with Class 1A! As class president, it is my duty to make sure you and Hana are as comfortable as possible. If there are any issues you can come to me. And I ask that Class 1A treat her well!”

“The same goes for me too.” Yaoyorozu gave them a soft smile. “I am vice president, after all.”

Midoriya could only watch on with tears in his eyes. “Th-Thank you… everyone.”

Ashido and Hagakure hadn’t come closer, but they were waving and making silly faces at the shark girl who was smiling at them. After a tag team of silly pantomime, they drew out a little chuckle from her which they tried not to coo loudly at.

“Now then everyone! We have rooms to sort out and things to unpack!” Ida took charge as everyone calmed down, ready to tackle the task at hand.

“We should get to setting up our rooms, we can all meet here after? Kero.” Asui suggested as she gave a small wave to Hana, who shyly waved back.

“Good idea Asui! We shall meet back here!” Ida chopped his hands aggressively in agreement.

“Please call me Tsuyu, kero.”

“We’ll wait here.” Midoriya spoke up. “We’ve already unpacked, so we can wait for everyone here.”

Everyone seemed to be in agreement as they walked away to their respective rooms. It all went better than expected, but Midoriya did catch the look Kachan gave him as he left. He sighed, there was no way the blonde was going to leave this alone.

After taking a breath, he turned to his daughter. “What did you think of them, baby?”

“They seemed nice.” She smiled as she snuggled up close to her Dad.

“Now while we wait, I have some new candy for us to try.”

The girl’s eyes lit up. “Are they fish shaped ones?”

“You know it.” He stroked her hair as they made their way to the kitchen.

Chapter Text

Hana was currently sitting on the sofa in the common room playing on Midoriya’s phone, both having tried a little of the fish shaped candy. He couldn’t let her have too much, but one or two wouldn’t hurt. Knowing that their schedule might get interrupted today, with everyone at the dorms now, Midoriya decided to prepare Hana some food. He’d looked through the fridge and saw just how much selection Nezu had gotten, so he decided to use a variety to make some sea food based noodles. Not quite ramen as that’d be a bit big for her, but he’d make sure to leave some chunks of fish in there for her. As he was making food he heard someone step into the kitchen, he turned to see Kachan. He sighed, turning back to the food he was preparing for his daughter.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” The blonde was the one to break the silence, not being the most patient person.

“Y-You’re really asking that?” Midoriya replied. Usually he’d let Kachan go off on him, he was used to it. But when it came to Hana he would stand his ground. He had to.

“Deku.” Kachan growled under his breath.

At that, Midoriya put down what he was working on and let the food cook on a lower heat. He turned to the blonde with fire in his eyes, which seemed to surprise the other boy clearly not expecting it.

“I know our relationship is… difficult. I know we have our problems, but if you dare try to bring them anywhere near my daughter you’ll find just how much I’ve been holding back.”

“Holding back? Don’t look down on me Deku!”

“I’m not! But after everything, you don’t think I’ve gotten close to snapping! Of course I have. I want to believe you’ll be a good hero, but Hana always comes first.”

Kachan huffed with a scowl. “Don't threaten me, Deku.”

“Do not test me here Bakugo.”

The use of his last name, instead of the cheesy childhood nickname, shocked Kachan out of his stubborn stance. It seems like the message might have finally gotten across, which Midoriya really hoped was the case. He turned back to Hana's food, not wanting this to make her have to wait any longer then she needed to. Oh, and definitely add Salmon chunks, she loves salmon. Maybe some tuna considering she also loves that. She was a shark after all, so she loved everything sea food. He saw some octopus in the fridge too, which she'd never tried before. Midoriya only stuck to the fish he knew she liked, as they didn't have the money to waste food, but with the variety Nezu gave them she could try all sorts of sea food. Maybe he should learn some new recipes? Something to look up later.

It wasn't till he spoke up, that he realised Kachan was still behind him. “Where’d you meet her?” His voice had almost taken a softer quality to it.

Now that was a question Midoriya hadn’t expected. He’d expected shouting and yelling, cursing all the while and probably scaring his daughter in the process. But instead he decided to ask about her. It was nice, but very unexpected.

“What?” Kachan asked as Midoriya turned to him in surprise.

“Sorry, I didn’t expect you to ask.”

Kachan huffs, turning away. “Don’t have to answer if you don’t want to.”

Midoriya took a breath before responding, still focusing on the food he was making. “I was 13 when we met. She… A lot happened, and if I didn’t take her in she’d probably still be out on the streets.”

“Why?”

“Beacuse I couldn’t leave her out there.”

“I thought Auntie would've taken care of her though.”

Midoriya sighs. “Mum has… she’s not been around.”

“What do you mean?”

“She left for America not too long before I met Hana.”

"Why?!"

"To be with father. I know she never showed it in front of you, but... she always hated that I was quirkless."

“Wh-Why didn’t you tell me?!”

“I don’t know!” Midoriya took a breath to calm himself, serving the food in a bowl and turning off the oven. “I… I don’t know. Part of me wanted to, but I wasn’t sure if that would change anything. You know what Aldera was like.”

“I…” Kachan went to say something, but stopped himself. Thinking for a moment, before huffing. He turned to look at where Hana sat, who was still looking at Midoriya's phone but had turned around on the sofa a little. She’d definitely heard them and was probably keeping an eye on them. “She’ll be safe here.”

“I hope so.” Midoriya grabbed a spoon from one of the draws and set the bowl out on the table.

“Look.” Kachan seemed to be having great difficulty with his words, but eventually he managed to put something together. “I… I still have a lot to say to you! But… Hana’s not a part of that. Just saying… that I’ll be around.”

Midoriya smiled at him, touched and still quite surprised. “Thanks Kachan. Sorry about earlier, I just… I don’t want Hana involved in all this. Whatever difficult history we may have, I don't want my daughter affected by that. She's a kid and she definitely doesn't deserve that. I’m glad I’m right though. U.A has really changed you, for the better.”

“Shut up, Deku.” The blonde grumbled under his breath as he walked away, probably back to his room.

By the time the other boys started to come down to the common room, Hana had finished eating. They all gave Hana a wave or a greeting before they went to chill by the sofas. Midoriya went to sit with them, not before whispering to his daughter to make sure she was ok with sitting with them too. Hana had made herself comfy on Midoriya’s lap and was looking between the other students as they talked.

“Are all your rooms set up, boys?” Ashido asked with a smile.

“Yup, now we’re just relaxing!” Kaminari waved at them as they approached.

Ashido, along with some of the other girls, gave a wave to Hana who shyly waved back. “We were all talking before we got here, and we think it’d be a fun idea to do a room showcasing competition!”

Immediately some of the boy's faces fell. However they seemed to follow along anyway, like they’re fate was already sealed. Which seemed a bit dramatic, but he's sure the class presidents will step in if anyone is too uncomfortable, and if not then he will.

“Yeah! This could be fun!” Kaminari agreed, who definitely wasn’t thinking too hard about it.

Midoriya looked down at his daughter, who was drinking water out of a water bottle Midoriya had filled for her earlier. “What do you think, baby? Want to go see the rooms?” He asked as moved some loose strands of hair behind her ear.

Everyone quietened to hear the girl's response. Hana just nodded as she continued to drink, everyone trying very hard not to outwardly coo at the girl.

“Then we’ll join too.” Midoriya said with a smile as he stood up, with his daughter at his hip.

They all got ready to start snooping, or judging as Ashido would put it. She seemed very into this, but Midoriya thinks it was more for curiosity than any actual official judging process. The first room they stopped at was Tokoyami's, who leaned against his door like a barricade. Kaminari and Ashido were trying to push him off, but he wasn't budging. He clearly didn't want to show off his room.

"Come on guys." Midoriya sighed. "He doesn't have to show if he doesn't want to."

"But-" Kaminari looked almost offended at the notion, but Ida interrupted before he could finish his complaint.

"Midoriya is right! This is a fun competition for bonding purposes, we don't want to make anyone uncomfortable!"

Both the troublemakers sighed as they walked away from Tokoyami's door, Midoriya went up to him to ask if he was ok. Which he was, he just had a couple of ruffled feathers. He seemed a little embarrassed of his room, which he didn't need to be, but he also didn't need to invite people in if he didn't want to. Privacy and all that.

"Bet he didn't want to show it cause he had magazines in there!" Mineta commented with a smirk.

"Dad, what does he mean?" Hana asked in a soft voice.

Everyone turned to Midoriya panicked, who bore into Mineta with fierce eyes. The grape boy gulped, "Hey, I'm sorry! I didn't mean anything by it!"

"You better not." Midoriya walked closer to the shaking boy. "And if I hear any of that again, especially around my daughter, you will not like the consequences."

"I'm sorry!" Mineta dashed behind Kaminari to use him as a shield, for the boy only to move out the way.

"So you're a protective daddy, Midoriya?" Ashido smirked at the green haired boy, who couldn't help but get super flustered at the comment.

"Dad keeps me safe." Hana adds, oblivious to anything Ashido might've been insinuating.

"Aww! I'm sure he does" Mina practically squealed at the adorable reaction.

"So if we're not doing Tokoyami's room, our first room is Aoyama right?" Kaminari asked.

As if on cue, like he needed an excuse, Aoyama twirled towards his room and opened the door with a flourish. Aoyama’s room left quite the first impression. Opening the door was like letting off a flashbang, and once your eyes adjusted you realised that Aoyama might as well be a magpie. Not only was the room full of shiny things, but the room itself somehow had a shiny aura. Midoriya’s not sure if that made sense, but he isn’t sure if Aoyama’s obsession with shiny and sparkly things ever did.

“It’s bright as hell!” Most of the boys complained as they shielded their eyes. However, Midoriya can say confidently that no one was surprised. Well, except for Hana.

Hana looked around the room with stars in her eyes, she’d never seen so many shiny things at once! She didn’t want to let go of her Dad, but she wanted to look around. So she lightly tugged at his shirt and whispered in his ear. With a smile on his face, he nodded and stepped further into the room along with everyone else.

“Yeah, this is exactly what I expected.” Ashido sighed as she looked around the room, Hagakure was next to her uttering the same consensus.

“What’s that?” Hana asked in a quiet voice. Regardless of how quiet she was, everyone heard her.

“What’s what, baby?” Midoriya asked.

Hana pointed up. “That.”

Following her hand, everyone looked up to the big disco ball dangling from Aoyama’s roof. It was spinning and helped give the room small sparkles of light as it reflected.

“That, mademoiselle, is a disco ball.” Aoyama responded with his natural dramatic flair, while also keeping his voice quieter and softer for the girl in Midoriya’s arms.

“A.. disco ball?” Hana tilted her head cutely to her side as she continued to examine it.

“It’s usually used for parties, darling. You hang it from the ceiling and it spins.” Midoriya explained.

“It sparkles.” Hana continued to look at the spinning ball with awe.

“Yes, it does sweetie.” Midoriya chuckled as he kissed the top of her head, as the girl continued to look around the room.

“Alright, next room!” Ashido pumped her fists in the air, before turning to the little shark girl. “You ready, Hana-chan?”

The little shark girl nodded, seemingly more into this than she was earlier. Midoriya couldn’t help but smile at her, maybe this would be fun.

Notes:

I rewrote the conversation between Midoriya and Bakugo at least 3-4 times. I still wanted to keep some things for later, but I also didn't think Bakugo would let this go in any way. Eventually I decided to go with this, as to not continuously rewrite this one conversation over and over again. Bakugo will have his moment, but for now I thought this was a good start.

Thank you all for the comments, bookmarks, and kudos on this story! Honestly didn't think it'd do that well, so I had low expectations lol. But it's nice to see people enjoy it! And till the next chapter, hope you enjoy!

Chapter Text

Obviously skipping Mineta’s room, which didn’t need any discussion, they ended up on the next floor at Ojiro’s room. Which was a refreshingly normal room. After that, it was Ida’s room which looked very organised. As shocking as the shelves of glasses may have been, Hana seemed interested in what books Ida had. Most of them were way above her level, but she liked the different colours. Kaminari’s room was… something. Hana stayed quiet through most of them, just looking around while still being attached to her fathers hip. It wasn’t till Koda’s room that she spoke up again, having gotten a little more used to the group.

“Rabbit!” She pointed at the ground, where the small white rabbit was looking up at them. She wiggled around letting her Dad know that she wanted to get down, and gently approached the bunny.

“Be careful.” Midoriya called out after her.

“I will.” She whispered as she slowly approached. She was being as quiet as possible, trying not to startle the bunny. The other students watched Hana slowly approach, some of them resisting the urge to say how cute the scene was. They didn’t want to startle the little shark and make her withdraw back into her shell, or startle the bunny, which Midoriya was grateful for. Eventually she sat in front of the bunny, and with Koda’s silent help she slowly pet the animal's head. Said bunny had now jumped into her lap, and Hana continued to pet her with stars in her eyes.

“What’s her name?” Hana asked.

“Yuwai-chan.” Koda replied in his soft voice.

Hana nodded, and she looked down at the bunny with a smile. “Kawaii-chan.”

Ashido and Uraraka had slowly approached too, ready to pet the bunny. Hana, seeing them approach, slowly put the bunny on the floor between them and stayed with the girls cooing over the bunny. Hana wasn’t talking much, but she had a wide smile on her face. It was good to see.

Kamiari however, seemed to take the bunny as a challenge. “You brought a pet?! No fair Koda, that’s cheating!”

The air seemed to shift a little among the other boys, seemingly taking this as a challenge.

“Don’t you think it’s strange that only the boys had to endure criticisms of their rooms? This was supposed to be a ‘tournament’, wasn’t it? So, it goes without saying that we can’t decide the winner until we see the girls’ rooms. Right?!” Mineta’s impassioned speech seemed to voice what the other guys said, however Mineta had a very different motive to the others.

Ashido just took the challenge in stride, surprising most of the girls. “Ok, why not?”

This whole thing seemed to get a lot more competitive all of a sudden. That air carried on as they continued through all the other rooms on the boys side of the dorm, Bakugo obviously not participating. Hana was on Midoriya’s hip, her eyes drooping a little. She was already getting a little tired, and it was getting late.

“Someone looks tired.” Uraraka came over as they’d passed Todoroki’s room, which was baffling. How he managed to get it to look like that was anyone’s guess.

Midoriya smiled, looking down at his daughter. “It makes sense. I think she’s a little tuckered out from all we’ve done today.”

“Well, a lot has happened today.”

“She was excited to meet everyone though. Nervous, but excited.”

“She wanted to meet us?” Uraraka asked, looking at the sleeping girl.

“W-Well, I... talk about you all. She’d always ask about U.A everytime I came home. I think she was always curious about my classmates, teachers, and what U.A looked like. She got a glimpse of the school when we got here, but I should probably show her around a bit more.”

“We can give her a tour!” Ashido jumped into the conversation with her usual boundless energy.

“Yeah, I’m sure she’d love that.”

They stopped outside Sato’s room, one of the last rooms on the boys side of the dorm. It was a fairly normal room, though unfortunately he did have to follow up Todoroki’s so even if it wasn’t normal it’d probably still look normal in comparison.

“Hold up a minute.” Ojiro sniffed the air. “Something smells really good! What is that?”

“Ahhh crap!” Sato rushed to his microwave. “I completely forgot! I finished unpacking pretty quickly, so I was baking a chiffon cake. I thought you all might want a midnight snack so…” He carefully takes it out of the oven. “It’d taste better with whipped cream, but who wants some?”

Immediately everyone rushes to get some, the girls having taken the first spots in line. The commotion stirred Hana, who looked around and sniffed. Her mouth started to droll as she looked around, rubbing the sleep from her eyes.

“Dad, what’s that smell?” She sniffs the air a couple more times.

“It’s cake. I probably shouldn’t give you any this late, but it’s been a special day. You want to try a bit?”

Hana nods and reaches out her hands. Midoriya hands her a bit of his slice and she takes a small bite.

“What do you think, baby?”

She chews the cake with a sleepy but thoughtful face, smiling as she swallows the mouthful. “It’s really good. Thank you.”

“I didn’t make it, Sato did.” He motions to the boy in question.

Hana looks over at him as Midoriya slowly approaches, and when she’s close enough she reaches out and gently pokes Sato’s arm. He jumps a little at the shock but calms down immediately upon seeing the shark girl.

“Hi Hana.” He says.

“Hi.” Hana points to the cake in her hands. “It’s good.”

“I’m glad you like it.” He ruffles her hair a little, which she surprisingly leans into the touch. Maybe she has gotten more comfortable with his classmates, Midoriya could only hope.

“Thank you.” She says quietly before taking another bite.

“You’re welcome.”

“That was so good!” Hagakure finished off the last of her cake.

“All that sweetness has got me feeling refreshed, let’s do this!”

“We’ve got one more room on the boys side!” Ashido turned to look at Midoriya with a silent question.

Midoriya sighs. “Probably time to put this little shark to bed soon, but you can have a quick look while you’re here.”

“Yeah!” Ashido cheered as the rest of the class followed him to their room.

Once they got there Midoriya opened the door to his room. It was a plain looking room. The walls and shelves are adorned with some hero merch and posters, mostly of All Might. But for a hero fanboy there wasn't a lot, though the truth behind that is that he couldn't afford a lot of hero merch for himself. He did manage to get a bookshelf from home in the corner of his room, which was steadily filling up with all his notebooks. His newest notebook was closed on his desk, it was one of the many notebooks he had on his classmates' quirks. The door to Hana’s room was open, as always, which allowed the class to also see the blue room next door.

“I expected more hero merch.” Ashido commented as she looked around the room. “But it’s very you.”

“This is adorable!” Hagakure let out a faint squeal as she looked into Hana’s room. Said girl was a little more awake, however that probably wouldn’t last for long.

She wiggled around in her fathers grip a little. “What’s up, baby?” He asked.

“I want to show.” She said quietly.

“You want to show off your room?”

She nodded.

Midoriya sighed. “Alright, you can give them a quick tour. Then it’s off to bed for you, little missy.”

“But I’m not tired!” She yawned as she spoke, betraying her words.

“I know you want to see everyone’s rooms, but it doesn’t all have to be today. I’m sure the girls would love showing you around some other time.”

“Promise?”

“I promise I’ll ask.”

Satisfied with that conclusion, Hana wiggled a little more until Midoriya put her down. She passed everyone as she stepped into her room and started showing it off. She started off very shy, but as the class encouraged her she got more and more confident.

“Who are these little guys?” Ashido' asked as she moved towards the shark plushies laying on her bed.

Hana’s eyes lit up slightly as she ran over to the bed, ready to introduce them all.

She motioned to the fluffy one and the smallest one. A light blue plush with the white underbelly, and had a pink bow wrapped around the head. “This is Hinoka.”

Hana smiles as she goes to the next one, getting wrapped up in the introductions. He was an old but well loved shark plush which was grey and bigger than Hinoka. He had some stitching by his tail where they had to restuff him, and he had an eyepatch over one of his eyes. “This is Kinzo.”

The next one was a massive shark plush which was a royal blue. This one was the biggest out of the three, and was even bigger than Hana herself. “This one's Daigo.”

And the last one was a fully pink shark plush, with dark pink eyes instead of the traditional black. “And this is Sakura!”

Ashido bowed at the plush sharks in front of her. “Nice to meet all of you!”

Hana giggled from where she sat on the bed, some of the other students deciding to give their own greetings to the sharks much to Hana’s delight. Some even added their own flair to it, though no one could top Aoyama in that department.

“Alright.” Midoriya clapped his hands to get everyone’s attention. “It’s time to put the little one to bed, so I’m gonna have to kick you all out now.”

Everyone said their goodbyes as they left, and as Midoriya closed the door behind them he turned to face the little shark, smiling at her as she yawned. “Let’s get those teeth cleaned and get you to bed.” He kissed her forehead as he picked her up, heading towards their bathroom.

Chapter Text

He smiled as he watched his little shark sleep. She’d really tuckered herself out today, and hopefully she wouldn’t be too groggy tomorrow. They both had school after all. Though it was nice to see Hana enjoying herself with his friends. He sighed as he turned around and sat at his desk, surprisingly he wasn’t too tired. So he opened up his notebook and started adding the notes he knew he’d missed, especially updating the notes he had on his classmates quirks. He had Uraraka's entry open at the moment. He hadn’t been working for long till a soft knock interrupted him. He went and opened the door, surprised to see Uraraka was standing there.

“You’re still awake.” It was said more as a statement than a question, but you could still hear the surprise in her voice.

“Yeah, wasn’t too tired.” He let her into the room, softly shutting the door behind them. “The tournament’s already over?”

She nodded. “Yeah. Ashido decided to do a whole voting system for the winner, and since you two weren't there she randomly gave those votes to someone else. Which… just happened to be me.”

“Oh yeah?”

She nodded, a faint blush on her cheeks. “Yeah… I wasn’t sure what to put, so I chose someone at random for them. Sorry.”

Midoriya shook his head with a smile. “Don’t be. We probably wouldn’t have known who to vote for anyway, all I care about is that everyone had a fun time.”

“It was fun.”

Midoriya sighed as he turned his attention to Hana, who was still sleeping. “Who won in the end?”

“Sato.”

“The cake?”

She nodded. “The cake.”

“Figures. Bet the guys hated that.”

“Oh, they did.”

They both chuckled softly to themselves, not wanting to wake up Hana. It was now that Uraraka took the chance to look over Midoriya’s room, which she could do better when there wasn’t most of their class crammed in. It was very minimalist but still had the signs of a hero fanboy. Ashido was right, it did suit him.

The open notebook on his desk caught her eye. “What’s that?”

Midoriya hummed distractedly, looking at where she was motioning towards. Once he saw, his face immediately lit up and he dashed over to close the notebook.

“That embarrassing, huh?”

“N-No! I just… it’s just notes.”

“On what?”

“Oh, you know… hero notes…”

“Are you usually embarrassed about your hero notes? You seem like the sort of person ready to info dump about them at a moment's notice.”

“Sh-shut up!” Midoriya turned away, blushing, as he put the notebook back on the shelf.

Uraraka chuckled to herself, before taking a deep breath to center herself. She had come here for a reason after all. “So.. I get if you have to stay here, but can you come with me? Tsuyu wanted to talk. I’ve already gathered Todorki, Ida, Kirishima, and Yaororozu. It’s just you…”

Midoriya hadn’t seen Asui at all after they parted to set up their rooms, he assumed the frog girl didn’t want to be part of the tournament. Though with the people Uraraka had already gathered, he could guess what this was about. He sighed as he looked over at Hana’s sleeping form. He really shouldn’t leave, but this could be important. He quickly grabbed a sticky note out of his desk drawer, scribbling down a note then sticking it on the door between their rooms.

He then turned to face his classmate. “Yeah, I can come. Just needed to make sure Hana knew where I’d be, the note should do.”

Uraraka looked a little unconvinced. “Are you sure? We wouldn’t want to separate the two of you and upset Hana, especially after just moving in.”

“I’m sure. She has my number if needs be, her phone should be…” He tiptoed into Hana’s room and looked around. And there it was, sitting on her desk was Hana’s phone. He nodded to himself and then slowly maneuvered his way out. “It’s on her desk. She can call me if she needs to.”

“She’ll be ok?”

The boy nods. “She’ll be fine, will probably stay asleep till morning. Plus, I have a feeling this conversation is about something important.”

Uraraka takes a moment to look at the sleeping girl, before nodding to herself. “Alright, let’s go.”

They both walked outside the dorms by the front entrance where the group had gathered, everyone having turned to see them approach.

“Hey Midoriya!” Kirishima greeted with a smile and a wave “How’s Hana?”

He smiled at the spikey boy. “She’s good. Happy, but exhausted. She collapsed as soon as she got to bed.”

“She didn’t stay up too late?” Yaoyorozu asked.

Midoriya shook his head. “No. She’d probably would’ve slept later today anyway with all that was happening, so the tournament helped her get some of that energy out. I’ll make sure she wakes up on time tomorrow, but I’m sure that won’t be an issue.”

Yaoyorozu sighed in relief. “Th-That’s good to hear.”

Uraraka moved to stand next to Asui, putting a comforting hand on her back. “Tsuyu has something she wants to say to you all.” She motioned to the frog girl.

Asui took a pause before speaking up. “I… Always say what’s on my mind, no matter what. But there are also times when I have no idea what I should say. Do you all remember what I said back at the hospital?”

‘If you’re planning on violating rules just like that… isn’t that kind of behaviour no different from a villain.’ Her voice reverberated in Midoriya’s mind as he remembered the conversation as he looked down at the ground in acknowledgement.

“Even though I sympathised with you guys, my choice of words was really severe.” Asui continued, her face downcast. “But when I heard this morning that you all actually went through with it, I was shocked beyond belief. I was frustrated at my own cowardly behaviour which manifested itself as trying to stop you all, and so many negative feelings were wheeling up within me. I… I had no idea what I could even say to you guys… And I couldn’t just have fun with you all like nothing happened.” The frog girl finally looked up with tears dipping down her face. “But that made me really sad. So that’s why… I had to have a proper conversation with you all and set things straight. All I wanted was to be able to go back to playing around with everyone like we always do.”

“You’re not the only one, Tsuyu.” Uraraka reached out to Aui with a comforting gesture. “Everyone was feeling worried and uneasy, and wanted to wipe those feelings away. So I’m sure the whole ‘room king’ thing probably came to be because we all understood how they felt, and… um… so that’s why, instead of blaming them for it. We wanted to… uh… How should I put this…” Uraraka put her hand to her chin as she struggled with her wording. “It was kinda a difficult thing to tackle anyway, but we thought we should all just… laugh it off together, and give it our all from now on! Or… something like that.”

Impassioned by her speech, Kirishima rushed forward towards the crying green haired girl. “I’m so sorry Tsuyu! Thank you for talking to us!”

Everyone else moved closer to the girl to help comfort her as tears ran down her face. Tears were already welling up in Midoriya’s eyes as he gave Asui a hug, it all really became one group hug.

As they broke away, it was Ida who spoke up. Seemingly asking the question on everyone’s minds. “Midoriya… Why did you help?”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, even though your… relationship with Bakugo isn’t the best and probably an excuse enough in the eyes of some. Now we know.. You had Hana to look after. Why?”

The whole group turned to him as Midoriya let you a sigh. “Well… It’s the true essence of a hero, right? Getting involved even when people don’t want you to.”

“But, surely you were worried about Hana?” Kirishima asked.

“Yeah, I was. I always am.” He sighed as looked up to the top floor of the dorms, where Hana would still be asleep in her bed. “I never would’ve gone if I didn’t know she was safe, but that never stops me from worrying.”

“Then why?”

He sighed. “The landlady helped. We’ve always been close to her, and… she knew I had part time jobs.”

“You worked part time?!” Kirishima yelled out, as everyone else looked at the boy surprised.

“It’s… a long story. But I knew Hana was well looked after, so I went. I know me and Kachan have a… weird relationship, but I couldn’t just leave him there. I mean, I’ve known him longer than everyone here. He may put on the tough act but there’s no way he wasn’t scared there. He didn’t deserve that… no one did… So! I decided to help. At first I wasn’t going to, but then I imagined if Hana was in his place and I…” The tears were now back again in force. “I just couldn’t do nothing.”

Kirishima slowly approached the boy, wrapping an arm around his shoulder. “I get it man, I get it.”

They all shared one last hug before retreating to their respective rooms, ready to turn in for the night.

Uraraka woke up a little later than usual, they all did stay up later for the dorm room competition. Though everyone being able to walk to class was exciting! She’d have to try and find Ida, Asui, and Deku before she left. Though knowing Ida, he was probably already in the classroom by now. She made her way down to the common room which wasn’t full of students just yet, though it was still early. She spotted Midoriya and Hana sitting at the table eating breakfast. She waved as she walked past to get to the kitchen.

“Morning Deku! Morning Hana!” She called out as she went to the kitchen area, and started getting her breakfast.

“Morning Uraraka!” Midoriya beamed her way. “Did you sleep ok last night?”

“Like a baby!” She smiled as she sat down next to him, just opting for some cereal. Midoriya himself had some cereal in front of him, but Hana had a small plate of fish. It looked to be salmon, and a little bit of rice. She waved at the shark girl, who shyly waved back. “As fun as it’s been, part of me thinks it’ll still feel weird to see everyone so early. Especially with classmates we haven’t really talked to outside of class.” Uraraka spoke up as she ate. “But I think it’s gonna be fun! We can finally do class sleepovers!”

Midoriya nodded. “Yeah. It’ll be weird at first, but I think we’ll all get used to it.”

Uraraka turned her attention to Hana and tried not to squeal once she saw what she was wearing. She wore her school uniform, with her baby blue backpack on the seat next to her. It had a small shark chain that was connected to the zipper. The uniform itself was fairly standard, but it was still utterly adorable.

“I’m done.” The shark girl’s voice bordered on a whisper as she addressed her father.

“Good. Go put the dishes in the sink and we’ll make sure you’re all ready.”

Hana nods, taking the now empty cup and plate, and moving over to the kitchen to place them on a counter she could just about reach. Midoriya had his eye on her the whole time, just in case he needed to step in.

“Got to be nervous, right?” Uraraka asked as she watched the small shark girl. “Watching her go to school.”

Midoriya sighed, putting his head in his hands. “I’m trying not to think about it. Usually I walk her all the way there and see her off at the gate, but I can’t do that anymore. I mean, I trust our teachers! It’s just…”

“You want to see her off yourself.”

“Yeah.”

Hana comes back and opens up her backpack, looking at the items inside.

“You got everything?” Midoriya turns his attention back to his daughter.

She nods in response.

“You sure?”

Another nod.

“Got your pencil case? Your books?”

Another nod.

“Oh! Do you need your gym uniform today? We don’t want you half way there and realising you need to come back for it, I won’t be here to help with that.”

She shakes her head.

“Oh! Your water bottle! Your lunch is in there right?”

She nods.

“Good, let me fill your water bottle up.” Midoriya dashes into the kitchen with the empty water bottle he got from Hana’s bag.

It was just her and Uraraka now for a little bit, and she wanted to make a good impression. This was Deku’s daughter after all! She wasn’t too sure what to say, so she decided to try and make light conversation with her. Break the ice a little.

“Are you a little nervous for today?”

Hana hesitates a second, before nodding slightly.

“That’s ok! A lot has happened recently. Is there anything you're excited about?”

Hana gives her shy nod, a small smile growing on her face.

“Really?!” Uraraka gasps as she plays up her reactions a bit for the girl. “What are you excited about?”

“P…Present Mic.” Hana muttered softly.

“Present Mic? …Oh! Is he taking you to school today?”

She nods.

“Oh, how exciting! Is he your favourite hero?”

“One of them.” Her voice is still soft but it did get a little louder. Uraraka hoped that meant she was at least a bit more comfortable.

“Really now? What are your other favourite pro heroes?”

“Gang orca.”

“Gang Orca. Is that because of his quirk?”

Hana nods, with a little more intensity than she had earlier. I guess in some ways she was just like Deku, whenever they have a topic they’re passionate about they really get into it. “Gang orca has a quirk like mine! And, and… He looks really cool!”

“He does! Do you want to be a hero, Hana?”

“I…” She looks down, fiddling with the hem of her skirt. “I don’t know.”

“That’s ok! You’ve got plenty of time to figure that out, and there’s so much you could do! I’m sure whatever you choose you’ll be great at it.” She reaches out to pet the shark girl, who leans into the touch. She hadn’t known Hana for long, but from what she could see she loved physical affection. It was at this point that Midoriya rushed back over and put the water bottle back into her bag, giving everything a final check before he zipped the bag back up. He knelt down to his daughters eye level as she put the bag on her back.

“You ready?”

She nods. “Yeah.”

“Good. We’ll wait by the entrance for Present Mic. I… I just want to say how proud I am of you.” Tears threatened to spill down Midoriya’s face, but he still managed to keep it together. It seemed that Hana had also picked up the Midoriya family tear ducts as she too got tears in her eyes.

She rushed forward and tackled her Dad in a hug. “I love you.”

“Love you too, little shark.” He gave her a comforting squeeze before breaking away. “Now come on, we have a pro hero to meet.”

They went to the front door, Midoriya still in his All Might pyjamas, as he was probably worrying more about getting Hana ready than himself. Uraraka smiled at the pair as she put her dirty dishes in the sink and went to get ready for school herself. She couldn’t help but look over as she left, watching Hana talk to Present Mic with stars in her eyes.

Chapter Text

After school Midoriya had been called to stay behind with Aizawa-sensei and All Might. The day had been… difficult. They’d worked on their special moves but Midoriya was struggling to figure out what his would be. Not only that, but he couldn’t stop worrying about Hana. She’d be home soon, but instead of him picking her up it was Present Mic. He knows she loves the hero, him being one of his favourites which Present Mic took pride in, but he hoped Hana wouldn’t be too distressed after not seeing him for so long. As the other students left, saying their own goodbyes on the way out, Aizawa-sensei and All Might walked over to Midoriya who was still sitting at his desk.

“Problem child.” Aizawa greeted, looking more tired than usual. “All Might told me everything, about your quirk and such. Filled me in on some very important details.” The man looked at the blonde with a disappointed stare. “Details that I would have loved to have known sooner, and may have even changed how I approached teaching you.” He turned back to Midoriya as All Might looked on apologetic. “But we cannot change the past, so I’ll see you after school on Wednesdays and Fridays to get you caught up and we can figure out the limits of your quirk. You will have time to get Hana if needs be, whether you leave her with your classmates or she comes with is up to you. Understand?”

“Yes sensei.” Midoriya says with a bow.

“Good. Now I have work to do, I’ll see you both tomorrow.” He sighs as he leaves, stopping at the doorway for a moment. “Midoriya.”

“Yes?”

“Let us know if you have any trouble.” And with that Aizawa left the classroom, presumably back to the staff room.

“Aizawa may be a little cold at times.” All Might took the chance to speak up. “But we can trust him, he’s a good man.”

“I know.” Midoriya replied as he grabbed his things.

“Well, I can walk you to the dorms?” The hero offered. “I have some things to talk to you about anyway.”

“Sounds good.”

They both leave the classroom and make their way to the dorms, silence follows them for the first few moments as All Might figures out what to say. He fiddles with a pen in his hands, taking a small breath before speaking up. “So, good news. The paperwork went through, I am officially your guardian.”

Midoriya nodded. “Good.”

“I…” All Might took a moment before responding. “Nothing will change between us, young Midoriya. I will still be your teacher like I’ve always been, and it means you and Hana are protected from anyone who might… get in the way.”

“Thank you.”

“Yes, well..” All Might stopped for a moment to pick the pen he just dropped, before going back to fiddling with it in his hands. “I was wondering, and you don’t have to say anything if you don’t want to, but… I was wondering… how you met young Hana?”

“How I met Hana?”

The hero nods.

Midoriya sighed. “Well, I was 13. My parents had left a month or so ago, taking the opportunity that the quirkless laws gave them. Didn’t even say goodbye. One day they were there, the next they were gone. Didn’t change much though, they never really noticed me anyway.”

“My boy…”

“So I was alone, for a while. The landlady came and visited sometimes, especially after realising I was alone. Father still sent money and it definitely wasn’t enough, but she charged me less rent than everyone else. She’d have probably charged me nothing if she could have, but I don’t know how comfortable I would’ve been with that.”

“The landlady, what’s her name?”

“Hirata Yatsumi. Hana calls her Grandma.” He smiles, thinking back on the time Hana first called her that. It was the first time he'd seen Hirata-san cry.

“And Hirata-san helped you?”

The boy nodded. “She’d come over and help clean the apartment sometimes, and would cook me food whenever she was there. Closest thing to a mother that I ever had.”

“And you met Hana soon after?”

He nodded. “Hana was on the streets at the time. She’s a little girl with a mutant quirk, it was an unfortunate common occurrence. I couldn’t just leave her there, she was so small and thin. I brought her home, gave her a big helping of food, and had her stay at mine for the time being. The next day I went to the police to see if they’d heard anything or if they could help, and the detective took one look at Hana and told me not to bother.”

“The detective said that?”

“Yeah. Suzuki Yamato. He was the only one I saw and he seemed very uninterested in the whole thing. It’s just… how?! How do you treat someone like that?! I...!" Midoriya took a moment to steady his breathing, calming down as much as he could. "It took some convincing, but he said he’d look around for her parents.”

“Did they find them?”

“Yup. They didn’t want her, so Suzuki left it at that. He came back and said there’s nothing he could do, no one would adopt a mutant. So I did. When he heard I was quirkless, I… he laughed and said… he said that at least the useless freaks would be together.”

“That’s… horrible.”

“Suzuki wasn’t a detective for much longer. Not sure why, as no one else was involved in our case so no one was there to complain. But, he probably did something worse and that got this badge revoked.”

“Well, good riddance I say. The force doesn’t need people like him.”

“Yeah…” Midoriya adjusted the straps on his backpack slightly, before clearing his throat. “Anyway, they had me sign some form and Hana was now with me. I assume they used the quirkless laws to lump us both together and not have to worry about putting in the actual work. He also didn't get much backlash, on the account that he was the only one on the case. It was a busy time of year, so they were a little short staffed." The boy sighed. "So I continued to look after her, and as soon as Hirata-san saw her she immediately jumped at the chance to help.”

“It must have been a lot.”

“It was, but I don’t regret it. Not one bit. During that time I got to know the best little girl in the world, and someone who deserved so much more. So I made sure she had that, I would give her as much as I could. She deserves the world, and I’ll give her as much of it as I can.”

“You’re a good man, my boy. And a good father.”

“Th-thank you.” The boy hiccupped as tears fell down his cheeks.

All Might slowly embraced the boy, and they stayed there for a moment as Midoriya calmed down. As his eyes started to dry, All Might pulled away and knelt down to his eye level. “I’ll always be there for you young Midoriya, not just as a mentor but as a friend. You’ve done great so far, but let us help you.”

The boy, who was overwhelmed, nodded as he didn’t know what to say.

“Now lets get you back, my boy. Hana will be here soon.”

“Right.” He wiped his face with his sleeves. “Let’s go.”

Chapter Text

Ever since he came back to the dorms, he’d been pacing by the entrance. He glanced at the clock, nodded, then continued to pace.

“Um… Deku?” Uraraka cautiously approached the pacing greenette.

The boy however did not hear her as he continued to pace, not before glancing at the clock one more time. Most of the class had either retreated to their rooms to get homework done or were chilling in the common room, those that were there got to witness this. Midoriya checked the clock again, barely a minute had passed.

“I’m sure she’ll be here soon, Deku.” Uraraka tried to approach without startling him, almost like you would a wild animal.

Midoriya, who had just checked the clock again, turned to see Uraraka standing there looking worried. Most of the self proclaimed baku-squad, minus Bakugo himself, were sitting in the common room watching this with concern as well.

“She’ll be here soon, Midori! You don’t have to worry so much!” Ashido spoke up, trying her best to lighten the mood a bit and calm the boy's nerves.

“Yeah, I know.” Midoriya said as he checked the clock again. Now a minute had passed.

“Come here!” Ashido sighed as she got up and physically pushed the boy onto a sofa in the common room, the boy blushing all the while. “She won’t get here any quicker, and you need to relax a bit! We’ve already had a stressful day, with the super moves and all. Plus Present Mic is with her! Come relax!”

The boy didn’t respond, still trying to process that he’d been moved over to the common room, and was very tempted to get back up and pace by the door again.

“This should help!” Kaminari grinned as he shoved UNO onto the table.

“Yeah, if we want to ruin our friendships.” Sero chuckled.

“Hey! It’s just a bit of fun!”

“No offense bro, but this will cause a fight.” Kirishima added from his spot next to the blonde. “We can’t be having fights in the common room, that’s just unmanly.”

“Well don’t fight then!”

Midoriya smiled as he watched the squad bicker. He wasn’t too familiar with a lot of his classmates, having stuck to his closer friends more often than not. Plus these classmates tended to hang out with Bakugo, which he didn’t have a problem with, he’d just rather avoid the blonde whenever he could. It was… complicated.

“I mean… we can play?” Midoriya suggested as he picked up the deck, liking the idea of a distraction at least. “I mean, what’s the worst that could happen?”

“That’ll jinx us Midoriya!” Kaminari groaned as leaned further into the sofa.

“I-I mean, we don’t have to if you don’t want to…”

“Why not?” Uraraka called out as she came over, sitting next to Midoriya on the sofa next to the one the baku-squad had claimed.

“I will not be held responsible for the fights that break out.” Sero sighed, though he leaned closer to the table in anticipation regardless.

“That’s what makes it fun!” Ashido grinned manically as she leaned forward. “Let’s do this!”

And true to the promise of his classmates, time certainly flew by. Midoriya was never one to rage at games, he didn’t really see the point of it. Though most games he played were with Hana, and a lot of it was making sure Hana had fun more than actually winning the game itself. If anything, playing with Hana taught him how to stealthy lose as she eventually managed to catch onto when he’d lose on purpose or not. So he had to get better at losing on purpose in a more sneaky way. He’d never really played with friends, but the atmosphere sure was lively.

“Really, Urakaka?! A plus two?!” Sero groaned in defeat. “I was so close!”

“Not on my watch!” Uraraka gave the boy a smug grin.

Sero drew two cards with a pout, meaning it was Kaminari’s turn. He immediately drew a card… then another one… then another one… by the fourth time the blonde was getting less and less enthused.

“Come on!” Kaminari drew another card and with a triumphant cheer he placed down a red zero.

“Oh, how about we try that again?” Ashido wore a shit eating grin as she placed down a red reverse.

“ASHIDO WHYYY?!”

“Don’t hate the player, hate the game.” She smirked as the blonde was forced to draw more cards.

It wasn’t until the door opened behind them that Midoriya looked back, and saw Hana walking in with Present Mic. He dropped his hand immediately on the table and vaulted over the sofa, rushing over to the smiling girl who practically jumped into his arms. “Hey baby, how was school?”

“Good!” The little shark chirped as she held out something in her hands. “We drew this today in art class!”

Midoriya gently took the paper from Hana and turned it over, his eyes already watering slightly at what was on the other side. It was him and Hana, she was laying on her bed in her room and he was sitting next to her with a book. She did like being read to before bed, and he made sure to do so whenever he could. For a five year old it wasn’t a bad looking drawing either, though Midoriya would’ve loved it regardless.

“This is beautiful, sweetheart.” He pulled the girl close as they hugged. “We’ll have to hang it up somewhere.” He couldn’t hang it on the fridge anymore as it wasn’t their fridge but the common room one, yet he still had this and the other drawings and notes Hana did to hang up too. He’d even saved every fathers day card she’d given him, appreciating every single one he got. How could he not? He remembered how emotional he was when he got the first one, almost flooded the house.

“Love you Dad.” Hana whispered with her head on his shoulder.

“Love you too, little shark.” He kissed her on the head before turning to the pro hero. “Thanks for picking her up, Mic-sensei.” He bowed at the man.

“No worries!” He drew finger guns at the pair. “She’s an absolute sweetheart! I’d be happy to do it again!”

“Thank you, Present Mic.” Hana waved as the man left the dorms and into the cool air outside.

“No worries, listener! Yall have a good night!” He waved at them as he left.

“Midori, it’s your turn now!” Ashido waved the pair over as the boy closed the door.

“What are you doing?” Hana asked, her voice quieter at the company she didn’t notice earlier.

“We’re playing UNO darling, remember the card game with all the different colours?”

“Oh! That one.” The little shark cringes slightly. “I don’t like that one.”

“That’s ok.” Midoriya brushes some loose hair behind her ear. “You can help me beat them instead.”

The girl nodded, getting comfortable in his lap as he sat back on the sofa. “We’ll win.” She gave a determined nod, having previously forgotten about her apparent dislike for the game. More happy to just sit with her father, regardless of what he was doing.

He picked up his hand with a smile. “Yeah, I’m sure we will.”

“Those are fighting words, Midori!” Ashido called out, though her smile reached her ears with how wide it was.

It was an eventful night, but it sure was fun.

Chapter Text

The weekend approached. It was weird to be at school when there was no school that day, having been the first weekend of everyone being in the dorms. Yet class 1A were still having fun. Some students were in their rooms calling their family, and some were in the common room.

“Like this, Hana-chan!” Ashido did another twirl before pulling off a cool pose. Hana tried to copy her, but ended up falling on her butt again.

“Again!” Hana jumped up and twirled around, forgetting the pose but she didn’t fall this time.

“Yeah! That’s it!”

Midoriya smiled as he watched the two. Ashido had been insistent on teaching the little shark some dancing after Hana mentioned some interest in it, and Midoriya wasn’t going to miss his little girl having fun. He’d even taken some videos of Hana trying some of the moves, which were simple considering she was young and inexperienced, but she was clearly having fun.

“Alright, ready for the next one!” Ashido beamed at the girl who nodded determinedly.

As Midoriya came back from the kitchen after refilling Hana’s water bottle and placing it nearby, Kacchan got his attention and motioned towards the door. He wasn’t exactly sure what he wanted, but he knew that the both of them had things to talk about.

He went over to Ashido to give her his phone. “I’ve gotta take care of something real quick, can you continue to get Hana dancing on video?”

“Of course I can!” Ashido gleefully accepted the phone.

“You’re leaving?” Hana asked as she wandered up to her dad.

“Not quite, baby. I’ve got to have an important conversation, but I’ll just be outside. You see the windows?” He points to the common room windows, you could see the main campus building outside. The little shark nodded. “If you ever want to find me, you’ll see me outside. If you need me, don’t hesitate to come get me. Ok?”

The shark girl nods and gives her dad a big hug. “Love you.”

“Love you too, little shark. Have fun.”

“I will!” The girl ran back over to Ashido. “Next one, please!”

Ashido laughed as she got into position to show her the next move. He smiled and waved at them as he left, his face growing more serious as he left the dorms.

“You coming?” Kacchan growled, but wasn’t shouting. At least that’s some progress.

“I don’t know where you want us to go, but I promised Hana I’d be within eye shot. I’m not leaving this area.”

Kacchan growled at the boy, but decided against arguing and instead sat on the grass outside the dorms. After taking a moment to collect himself, Midoriya sat next to him. Silence washed over them as a small breeze brushed past, it was actually kind of peaceful. Or at least it would’ve been if anxiety hadn’t been gnawing at Midoriya’s gut.

“I didn’t need your help.”

So, that’s where he was starting. Ok. “I know.”

“I could’ve gotten myself out there.”

“That, I doubt.”

“Deku…”

“You would have at least needed All Might's help, come on. I know you’re not that full of yourself. You were kidnapped!”

Kacchan’s ever present scowl did not disappear, but he didn’t retort. Instead just letting out a small sigh, still looking at the view in front of them and not turning to the boy next to him. Both of them seemed to be making an effort to not look at the other.

“Thanks…” It was small, almost too quiet to hear, but Midoriya heard it. Though he wasn’t going to push his luck.

“I… Kacchan. Was this all you really wanted to talk about?”

“No.”

“I think… I think we both know the elephant in the room.”

“Your quirk.”

“Yeah…” Midoriya sighed, finally looking at the blonde. “I… I wouldn’t be surprised if you figured it out.”

“So All Might…?”

“Yeah. All Might.”

A moment of silence washed over them again, Midoriya looking back to the scene in front of them. The anxiety was still gnawing at his gut, but it was less then it was. He assumed Kacchan had more of a plan for this, but Midoriya wouldn’t bend to what Kacchan wanted to stay closer to Hana. So this was the compromise.

“So… was it my fault?”

“Y-your fault? Kacchan, what are you talking about?”

“I was the one who got kidnapped. If I was stronger, then none of this would’ve happened!” The blonde punished the ground, letting out a small explosion as his fist connected with the ground. “How could it not be my fault?! All Might’s end is my fault!”

Midoriya took a moment to really digest Kacchan's words, before slowly putting his hand on his shoulder. “He was already reaching his end. I… He told me about his injury before he even decided to give me his quirk, he was already on borrowed time. USJ? None of you saw it, but he was struggling to hold his form at the end. It’s not your fault Kacchan.”

Kacchan sighed, before finally looking at the greenette. “Don’t touch me.” He grumbled.

“S-Sorry!” Midoriya immediately moved his hand off his shoulder and rushed it back to his side.

“So, why you?”

“Why me?”

“Yeah.”

“I… I don’t know.”

“Bullshit!” Kacchan got up in Midoriya’s face, his snarl extended more than humanly possible. “How the hell do you not know?!”

“I don’t!” Midoriya moved back as much as he could, trying not to get an explosion his way. “That’s a question for All Might, not me?! Sure, I know the events that lead to it. That doesn’t mean I know his reasons! I just… I hope he sees in me what I always wanted to see in myself... A hero.”

Kacchan scowled, but backed off. Looking away from the boy as he looked forward. Midoriya took a moment to put himself together before sitting back up again.

“Hana…” The blonde spoke up after another moment's silence.

“What about her?”

“She was with you during Aldera.”

“She was.”

“Then… Why? Why do all this?”

“I’ve always wanted to be a hero, Kacchan. Hana being there wouldn’t dissuade me from my dreams.”

“But is that fair on her? Going off and leaving her?”

“I’d never do that.”

“How are you going to be a hero, if she holds you back?!”

“She’d never hold me back!” Kacchan turned in surprise to see Midoriya in his face, which had grown a scowl that rivalled the blonde. “Don’t you dare…! I will sacrifice anything for her! That little girl, right there!” He points to the dorms, not knowing how accurate his aim is but they both know she’s there. “I’d do anything for her, and that does not hold me back.”

“Then what happens, when you go out and never come back?!”

“That won’t happen!”

“Come on, even you’re not this much of an idiot!” Kacchan gets in his face again. “You know that could happen!”

“Why do you care?! You never cared about me, so why the hell would you care for my daughter?!”

“Cause..!” He scowls and turns away. “Cause… I want to be better than the brat that was in Aldera, ok?! I wanted to be better than the little shit who was on that pedestal! I want to earn my place here, and I want to be a hero! And… you always had the better attitude…”

Midoriya, shocked speechless, blinked at the blonde in front of him. He definitely didn’t expect that.

“What?!” Kacchan gruffed.

“N-nothing! I-I just… didn’t expect that is all.” Midoriya sighs, taking a moment to gather his thoughts. “I’d be lying if I said I never thought of it, something happening and never being able to see her again.”

“Then why? Why do something so dangerous... when you have a daughter?”

“Somethings gotta put food on the table Kacchan, and those café jobs won’t give us enough. Like sure, there maybe other jobs I could’ve done that helped people and were also safer, but I want to be a hero that makes people feel safe in this world. That includes my daughter. And if said career can also fund her schooling, food, clothes. Her going to college, or whatever she wants to do, then that’s even more reason to do it.”

Silence would’ve been nice, or a sweet wrap up for their admittedly heated conversation, and yet Kacchan didn’t do sweet. “I still want that fight.”

Midoriya sighed, a smile growing on his face. “After the provisional license exams, when all that calms down, you can have your fight. But we talk to the teachers, and we get them to officiate.”

“We don’t need that shit! You scared or something?!”

“Of pissing off Aizawa-sensei? Yes, I am. I think we both know better than to start breaking campus rules. Let's at least try to do this officially.”

Kacchan scoffed, but didn't argue back. “Fine.”

“I doubt this fixes anything between us.” Midoriya spoke up as he stood, getting ready to head back inside the dorms. “But I hope this is a start.”

Kacchan stood without a word, before walking back into the dorms. Midoriya sighed, hoping he was right, before checking on his little shark once more.

Notes:

This was also a chapter I struggled a bit with, wanting to balance the conversation while also keeping Bakugo how he'd usually be. Though I think this turned out well all things considered!

Next chapter should be the last one! This doesn't mean I won't write any more stories with Midoriya and Hana, I have plans for future stuff, but I didn't want this story to run on for too long. Thanks for all the Kudos, Comments, and Bookmarks! I'm happy that people wanted to read one of my stories, and it'll be nice to finally finish a story (I'm terrible at doing that). So hopefully the next one will come out soon. Hope yall have a great December and stay safe!

Chapter 12

Chapter Text

Hana was twirling around the room with Ashido when Midoriya got back, having the time of her life. Her light blue skirt twirled with her as she giggled.

“Dad!” She ran over and practically dragged the boy over. “Come see!”

“See what, baby?”

“Our dance!” She flashed a toothy grin as Ashido cackled beside her.

“That’s the spirit, Hana-chan!” The pink girl went to play the music again. “You ready?”

“Yeah!”

Midoriya smiled as she watched the girls dance. It was nice to see Hana starting to open up to the rest of the class, becoming less shy and a little more vocal with them. Surprisingly she ended up being closer to Ashido, especially after the pink girl showed her all her plushie collection that almost took up her whole bed. Hana recommended that she get a shark, so now Ashido had a blahaj in the mix. They were going to have a naming ceremony.

Midoriya clapped for them as they did their final pose, Hana beaming as she only held it for a few seconds before running over to hug her dad. “Did you see it!”

“Yes, I did!” He laughed as he picked up the girl and settled her on his hip.

“You’re a natural Hana-chan, you may even surpass me soon!” Ashido smiled as she pet the little shark girl, who purred quietly at the action. Which caused Ashido to pause. “She purrs?!”

“Sometimes.” Midoriya continued to pat the girl's head in Ashido’s stead as she processed the information she just learnt, the little shark continuing to purr. “It’s a sign she’s starting to open up to you.”

“Really?!” Ashido had tears in her eyes and a big smile on her face.

“Yeah. She’s a little embarrassed about it, so she tends to hide her purrs. I’ve told her not to, that’s it’s perfectly natural for her, but she’s selective about who hears it.”

“So she trusts me?”

“Very much so.”

“Hana!” Ashido wailed as she collided with the girl still on her fathers hip, who just hugged the pink girl back with a small smile. As she pulled away Hana reached out to her, and Ashido gasped. “Really?!”

“She wants you too.” Midoriya smiled at the pink girl.

Ashido immediately jumped at the chance, and balanced the little shark girl on her hip as she leant her head on her shoulder. Hana was as content as can be as Ashido was trying her hardest not to do victory laps across the entire common room. She pet the little shark girl who purred in response, Ashido poorly hid her squeal.

“You enjoy dancing, sweetheart?” The greenette asked.

Hana nodded, her eyelids drooping. She let out a small yawn, covering her mouth with her hands as Ashido continued to pet her.

“You want to try dancing again?”

She nods.

“Then I’m sure Ashido wouldn’t mind teaching you again, right Ashido?”

The girl in question nodded vigorously. “Absolutely! It was fun dancing with you, Hana-chan.”

The little girl smiled as her eyes slowly closed, falling asleep on Ashido’s shoulder. “Is she asleep?” She whispered.

“Looks like it. Here.” He reached out his arms, and Ashido very softly transferred the sleeping child into her fathers arms. “It is getting late, so I’m not surprised she tuckered herself out.”

“It’s nice to see her so full of energy.” Ashido gently tucked some of the girl's hair behind her ear.

“It’s because she trusts you. Honestly, I thought it’d take longer for this to happen, but it helps that everyone's been making an effort.”

“Everyone?” She raised an eyebrow at the boy.

“Kacchan doesn’t swear in front of her, I take that as a victory.”

She chuckled lightly in response. “Yeah, I guess there isn’t much else you can hope for.”

They stayed silent for a moment, watching the sleeping girl. Midoriya cleared his throat before speaking up. “Thanks for watching her for me, and for teaching her how to dance.”

“No problem! Did she ever show any interest before?”

He shook his head. “I don’t think she even knew what dance really entailed, but she's always been a bit energetic.”

“I wouldn’t have known when I first met her.”

“Well moving in took a lot of energy, and she was still getting to know everyone. One thing she shares in common with me I guess, it can take us a while to open up to people.”

“And yet she did.”

He nodded. “She did.”

“So when will you?”

“Wh-What do you mean?”

“Oh come on!” Ashido whisper yelled, trying not to wake Hana while expressing her frustration. “You’ll tell us all about Hana and yet we don’t know much about you. Favourite colour? Birthday? Hobbies that aren’t to do with heroes? You tend to keep to yourself.”

“Yeah… Just not too used to it is all.”

“Well you better get used to it!”

“Maybe…”

A moment of silence washed over them before Ashido spoke up again. “Sooooo, you gonna answer my questions?”

The boy sighed. “Red.”

“Your favourite colour is red?”

“If you couldn’t tell from the shoes.” He pointed down to the red trainers he always wore.

The girl chuckled. “Yeah, I guess that was obvious. But what about your birthday?”

“It’s just a birthday, Ashido. Not a big deal.”

“Not a big deal!” Hana stirred in his hold, which caused Ashido to take a deep breath in and stay as still as possible. The little girl eventually stopped and continued to sleep, they both let out a sigh of relief. “It is a big deal!” She was a lot quieter this time. “It’s a birthday! It should be celebrated.”

“Well, I never really had the time. Hana always came first, plus I didn’t… I didn’t have many friends growing up.”

“So what did you do?”

“Honestly? Make katsudon for us, considering it’s my favourite. She loves it too.”

“That’s it?”

“Pretty much, yeah.”

“We need to fix this. When is your birthday?”

“Ashido-”

She interrupted him before he could continue. “It’s either you tell me, or Hana does.”

He sighed. “15th July”

“Wait… July?” Ashido gasped. “We’re July babies! Mine’s 30th July! Hana’s a March baby, right?”

He nodded. “12th March. I was never able to do much, but now I’m at U.A I’m hoping the teachers will help me.”

“Help with what?”

“Well… We all know her favourite heroes. Present Mic and Gang Orca. Sooooo… She’s already met Present Mic, though having him at her party even for just a bit would also be really cool, but she’s never met Gang Orca. She really looks up to him. So I thought, if it wasn’t too much trouble…” He checked that the girl was still asleep, and she was. Out like a light. “I thought that they might be able to extend an invitation to him, and see if he comes.”

“That’d be so cool! I’m sure she’d love it.”

“I’m sure she would too.” He sighed, looking down at the sleeping girl. “Well, I better get her to bed. Night Ashido.”

“Night! And we’re coming back to that conversation about your birthday mister! I’m not letting that go!”

“I’m sure you won’t.” He sighed, a smile tugging at his lips. “Thanks again, for looking out for her.”

“My pleasure!” She waved as she moved towards the girls side of the dorms.

As he entered their room and put Hana to bed, he couldn’t help but smile. Everyone was trying so hard to get along with her, and she was opening up to them too. He was anxious that this would be the wrong choice, that she’d clamp up again, and yet seeing her dance with Ashido summed it all up for him. This was a good decision after all.
