Taph did what was it told. They were loyal. They were obedient. They were happy.
Or at least, they thought they were.
Perhaps it had simply created those delusions in its mind as a way to cope.

Taph had never wanted to hurt anyone. Never wanted to cause harm or distress. And yet, it had.
Yes, in fact, Taph deserved everything that had happened to them.
