Chapter Text
Who knew putting nails in a bat would be so difficult? She had been at it for hours now, and she was nearly done.
She knew from her visions she would need her bat, or her mother swords but she would prefer not too. And if she wanted to destroy that teasing Thing, the black mass that caused her despair and pain, a simple wooden object wasn’t enough.
She was more motivated to fight that demon than fulfilling the prophecy, truth be told. Obviously, she didn’t want the world to disappear, but going in the darkness wasn’t a thrilling thing. If anything, it was what afraid her the most lately. But as she grew closer to this goal, she also felt a sense of peace blooming, comforting her in the idea it was the best thing to do.
She didn’t want anyone involved, she didn’t want her stubbornness affecting others, but she also didn’t want risking to be forgotten, lost. She hoped her journey would be quick, a few hours at most, so she could return home, return to school. She watched the hours passing by with a mix of impatience and dread; and no one was here to comfort her.
She bit her lips, already regretting her decision but not aborting her motion; she grabbed her laptop, logged on and began typing to the only one she thought of at this moment.
10BAT57:Hey, I just wanted to tell you I’m going to investigate the bunker after Christmas. So, yk, if anything happen maybe it rlly was haunted
Az123: Dess don’t, it’s freezing at night + don’t yall open present in the morning? Just wait a few days and we’ll go together
Az123: And I heard about the stalker thingy. Maybe my dad didn’t find any evidence yet but it doesn’t mean there’s no risks
10BAT57: K
Az123: just promise me youll wait plz
10BAT57: promise
Az123: ;) we could call it a date
Az123: Dess?
Az123: I WAS JOKING PLZ
Az123: I’m never joking again. Ur mad?
She closed the laptop, carefully logging off, and simply sat on her bed, hollow. What was a broken promise in the grand scheme of things?
It doesn’t seem he will miss you that much.
And here it was again. She didn’t bother answering it in her head, but she sighed and went to her closet. If she trusted her guts, she had to replicate her nightmares’ setting as much as possible. So, she picked the right closes and threw them on her bed. Oh how she wanted to abandon her beloved flannel for Asriel’s warm sweater he forgot and never asked back. Since she was there, she also fetched her clothes for tomorrow dinner; a Christmas sweater with a black skirt. Modest, but in theme. And after spending hours in that elf costume, she wasn’t ready to wear another Christmas dress yet. Next year, she told herself.
Launching herself onto her mattress, she spared a glance at the bat. It was missing a few nails but it was far enough; she could stop it here and relax…
Someone knocked at her door. She groaned before peeling herself off of the surface of the bed. She crossed the room to get to her door and opened it.
It was Noelle, two calendar in hand and a huge smile on her face. It stretched enough to make her cheek cover the bottom of her eyes. Her joy was sparkling in her eyes.
“Dess! I thought you were still sleeping. You want to open it with me?” She exclaimed, mentioning to the items in her hands.
“Sure.” She answered with a soft smile.
They sat on her bed, because the floor was covered in nails she had yet to clean before her parents witnessed it. Noelle, as impatient as a kid could be, was the first one to rip open her calendar. She obtained a chocolate in the shape of Santa’s pannier; it was fairly huge but probably half the size of tomorrow’s. The 24th chocolate was always the bigger.
“Yummy.” She laughed before eating it in one go.
“Pfft, you can’t even savour it with that speed.” Dess joked will looking at her own chocolate. A beautifully decorated Christmas tree made out of milk chocolate. Choosing to be generous, she offered half to Noelle who immediately hugged her.
Watching over her sister’s shoulder, she noticed a broken piece of chocolate in the square, previously behind the tree.
An egg.
She felt like she was on the right path.
