A Wolverines Home

Chapter 2: Below the stars

Summary:

Logan can’t sleep leading to a conversation with Ororo

Chapter Text

Ororo slowly approached Logan, not wanting to accidentally startle him.

“Logan.” She gently said,

Logan didn't turn to face her, still looking out at the night sky.

“Ororo?” He replied, sounding confused as to how she found him.

Ororo stepped closer.

“Can I join you?”

“Mhm. This is a free country; do what you want.”

She then closed the distance and stood next to him.

The silence was actually comfortable, as if they’d known each other for years instead of only less than an hour.

Logan finally broke the silence.

“So. How’d you find me?” He asked, more intrigued than annoyed.

Ororo chuckled.

“You weren’t exactly subtle.” She gently teased.

Logan blushed with embarrassment.

“Ah, I’m sorry. Did I wake you?”

Ororo shook her head.

“I was already awake. I just had to use the bathroom when I heard you. Are you okay? Why did you come here in the first place?” She quizzed

Logan gave her a thoughtful look.

“I couldn’t sleep. Guess I’m not used to sleeping in new places.” He shrugged.

Ororo nodded.

“This place is nice to come to when you want to find some peace.”

Logan offered a half smile.

“Got that right, Stormy.”

Ororo moved closer but was careful not to crowd.

“Well. Are you liking it at the Mansion so far?”

Logan blew some air out of his mouth.

“I mean. Jean and Scott are…nice so far.”

Ororo hummed in reply.

“Since we’re both awake, how about we use this fancy telescope and look at some stars and constellations?”

Logan actually smiled, the kind that genuinely reached his eyes.

“Heh. You really want to be in your element, eh, “Ro”?

Ororo returned the smile.

“You know me, Wolvie.”

Logan and Ororo each shared a lens so the former could see what the latter was looking at.

Ororo pointed out:

“See that triangle-looking shape with a short straight line of stars on the left and a longer curved line of stars on the right? That’s Libra.” She explained.

Logan grunted in acknowledgment.

“What else do you know?”

Ororo shifted the telescope.

“See that short line of stars that’s hanging off Pegasus? That’s Andromeda. And across from it is Lacerta.”

Logan seemed to visibly relax now that he began to feel the weariness seep into his body.

“You know so much. That’s…that’s a talent. Takes a lot of practice to remember all the names of these constellations.” He said it roughly, but the admiration in his voice was undeniable.

Ororo felt an odd warmth spread in her chest.

“Pff. Thank you. It’s just something I do in my free time when I’m not teaching. She said casually,

Logan pulled away from the telescope, and looked at her. Ororo did the same thing.

Logan had sincerity in his eyes.

“Doesn’t matter. It’s been a while since I learned something new.”

Ororo could’ve sworn she was blushing. Her heart pounding

“That means a lot, Logan. I myself can’t remember when I’ve shared my interests with anyone. It’s refreshing.” She admitted

Logan reached his hand out, hesitating.

“Is it okay if I—“ he offered.

Ororo was amused.

“Of course you can touch my shoulder, Logan.” She said with a hint of humor in her voice.

Logan then rested his hand there.

“I would ask you to name more of those constellations, but heck, hanging out with you… I’m finally growing tired.” He admitted

On cue, Ororo yawned.

“So am I. Same place tomorrow night?”

Logan nodded with a smile.

“You got it.”

Ororo then turned to go back downstairs when Logan spoke.

“Oh, and Ororo?”

She paused, looking back up at him.

“Yes, Logan?”

“…thank you for coming out here with me. It means a lot.”

Ororo softened.

“No need to thank me. Who knows? You might track me down one of these nights and find me here first before you.” She teased.

Logan smirked.

“I just might. I have heightened senses for a reason.”

The duo walked back to the mansion, careful not to wake the others.

As they went back to their respective rooms once more, they locked eyes, maybe a little longer than necessary, before they said their goodnights.

And as he expected, Logan fell asleep as soon as he hit the pillow.

The next morning Laura found Logan and Ororo in the kitchen.

She caught a whiff of them and instantly realized they were outside.

“Good morning.” Laura called.

Ororo and Logan turned around, a bit startled at Laura’s sudden appearance, but tensed up at seeing her.

“Good morning, kid. Want some breakfast and maybe coffee?” Logan offered

Laura shrugged.

“I already got plenty of restless energy in me, but some breakfast would do. Maybe an omelette?”

Logan was already going for the stove.

“Omelette it is.”

Laura sat down at the table across from Ororo.

Ororo looked from her to Logan.

“So. Are you guys going to meet the rest of the X-Men today?”

Laura had an unreadable expression.

“I just want someone around my age for once.” She said in her voice with a bit of frustration and a hint of loneliness.

Logan felt a pang in his heart.

Of course. The last friends Laura had were back in her old universe.

Logan sighed.

“Kiddo. You need to tell me when you’re feeling that way. We don’t want you to feel isolated.”

Laura gave a half smile.

“I’m here. So technically not isolated. I’m used to being alone anyways.”

Ororo spoke up.

“Don’t worry, sweetie. I’m sure there are people here who would be glad to be your friend.”

Laura had a hesitant trust.

“… I guess I’ll believe it. Thanks, Ms. Munroe.”

Ororo raised a brow.

“Please stick with Ororo. Ms. Munroe makes me feel old.” She joked.

Laura huffed out a rare but genuine laugh.

“Alright. Ororo.”

On cue Logan came over, putting two plates containing an omelette in front of the two women.

“Thank you, Dad!”

“Thank you, Logan!”

As Logan watched them dive into the food, he couldn’t help but watch for a moment.

For the first time he found himself wanting to stay.
