“Hey, babe!” Yaz appears behind her, the step-click of her cane distinctive on the gravel. She slides a hand onto her shoulder and smiles sweetly at her parents. “The others are just unloading.”
“Oh— your friends are joining too?” Sara says, raising her eyebrows.
“Yes, mama. They are,” Sammy says, a little firmly. “Is there a problem with that?”
“No— nonono, not at all.” But the smile that stretches across her face is just forced enough to make Sammy frown.

The day of the agricultural support workshop with Sammy's parents arrives, and the tension is thick enough to make Sammy choke. But she's not the only one who feels it, and she has five very protective people in her life who aren't as forgiving as she is.
