My bestfriend is a vegan cannibal

Advice

I (30M) and my best friend 'Mark' (‘28’M) had know each other for technically a decade. We had some issues about being honest to one another in the past. The fault was mine, my bigoted upbringings and my cowardice made me willfully blind to it. That being said, once that trial in our friendship had passed, there had not been a time where either of us truly hidden something from the other. Even if we don’t verbalise it, I can say he knows me better than I do and so do I know him. If something is new to us, it always made sense right away. At least, that’s what I used to think.

A few hour ago, my friend's friend 'Dick' had a birthday party (edit: the party is still ongoing). Obviously since Mark was going, so was I. The party had been going great if like Dick you measure success in a 15:1 the alcohol/food ratio in your stomach. Toward the end of the night, Mark and I were chilling and drunk outside, alone. Suddenly, Mark whispered in my ear 'the only meat I would eat is yours'. I obviously supported right away my friend in his... "Cannibalism coming out"? If you can call it that way.

I admit I'm not really sure if I said the right thing to him as it took me quite by surprise. Forgive me for my bigotry but I would never have assumed one can be vegan and a cannibal, much less one can be ‘Mark’ and a cannibal. I fear to repeat my past mistakes once again and hurt my friend. It also put in a different context many thing we did together. I used to incite him to go hunting with me, maybe it felt like I was rubbing it in his face?

I would gladly hear any input from fellow cannibals.
