merlin fics i read and haven't been the same since
I spent a whole year reading merlin fanfic to cope. Some of these fics caused me to write multi paragraph messages to my long suffering friend about why the merlin writers completely dropped the ball and why i think someone should reboot merlin but this time gayer and also crying about "two sides of the same coin" so i figured i would just go ahead and make a collection out of 'em as a hall of fame of sorts.

Arthur meets Merlin’s eyes again. “My whole life, I have been groomed to be the Prince, the future King of Camelot. I have never had a father, I have only had a Sovereign to serve and appease.”
“That’s not true.” Merlin argues, though even he doesn’t sound convinced. “Your father loves you, even if he doesn’t show it.”
Memories from his past, of lectures and reprimands, words of advice and words spoken as orders, rise up. There had been anger and disappointment, stern severity and empty, false pride. Never affection, never softness. Not even when he was a child.

After disappointing his father, Arthur is shipped off to Mercia to compete in a tournament, with the orders to bring back honour for the Pendragon name "or else". While there, away from his father's watchful eye, he allows himself to question a few things that have always been there in the back of his mind. These questions may just be the ticket to setting him free.

Things change, when he brings a certain manservant with him.

"Now that Gwaine was looking at him he looked tired. Scratch that he looked exhausted. Pale and smaller than the last time Gwaine had seen him. He had dark circles bruising under his eyes and the eyes themselves looked much older.
"What do you need his help with anyway?"
Arthur looked behind him to Leon. Obviously debilitating how much he was willing to give away. When he turned back around, his weary eyes locking with Gwaine, He replied, "Camelot's in trouble.""i.e. After being banished from Camelot for his magic, Merlin spends the year staying with Gwaine. Their happily ever after abruptly comes to an end when Arthur shows back up asking for help.

In the wake of killing Carleon, Arthur realises that this is not the sort of King he wants to be. So he asks Merlin how he knew about Agravaine, and to his surprise, Merlin gives him an extremely sound and well researched set of arguments, that he promises he has the physical papers to back up.

Merlin inhaled sharply, for a moment Arthur thought he would protest, insist his life was nothing compared to Arthur's, but Merlin only looked at Arthur, as if he was measuring the depth of his words, the give of his eyes, and Arthur refused to look away, he thought that if he squinted, he could see the stars in Merlin's eyes.
